I’ve always thought the same. Or even a hurricane. A tornado, you can be 1-2 miles away and watch it in the distance and be safe from damage. Just some hail and higher than average winds. But a hurricane, covers a whole surface area and happens in areas that get a lot of normal thunderstorms. I couldn’t imagine being a settler and thinking a normal storm was coming then a category 5 hurricane with 175+mph winds are hitting everything your eyes can see for hours 😅

Hey y'all, you might be interested in checking out spc.noaa.gov!
If you ever feel a little uneasy, this official National Weather Service website has up-to-date graphics and data for almost all weather activity. I live in Texas (where tornadoes are quite common), and this website gives me peace of mind.
You can see daily severe weather outlooks (with hail, tornado, and high wind chances [%]) which are created and updated every day by NWS meteorologists. You can see mesoscale discussions that plot areas at a higher risk for severe weather in real time. There is an interactive map with constantly updated radar GIFs and color polygons that represent weather watches and warnings (including severe thunderstorm, tornado, and even winter weather) for you to get an idea of what is approaching/where it is coming from. Just click about where you live on the map and you can see not only incoming severe weather, but also short-term temperature/weather forecasts, etc.
I cannot tell you how many times the website has saved my vehicles from hail damage. If you're from a particularly severe-weather-prone area, it may be worth spending some time finding your way around the website. It has saved me in several ways, and it might save you too :) To get started, go to SPC Products > All Forecasts.

I agree, and I am bothered by the nonchalant attitude. I was born and raised in the middle of tornado alley and I am currently in school for meteorology, but I've only gained more and more respect for the weather the more I experienced it. I understand being knowledgeable and therefore, less panicky due to having more experience and having a plan of action that is as close to fail-proof as possible. Usually when people say, "nothing to worry about...I've lived here my whole life and just sleep through the sirens..." that means that they've tuned out or dialed down their attentiveness, concern, and ultimately, respect for tornadoes.
More experience should not equate to more nonchalance. I'm all for not panicking, but precautions should always be taken when the atmosphere is angry...

I live in Missouri, too, and in one two-year period, 3 tornadoes passed within 3/4 of a mile of my house. One went directly over my house before it touched down, tearing up trees in my yard and the woods next to my property. It touched down a minute later and plowed across Lambert Airport, damaging the main terminal.
One passed about 1/4 mile to the south, still airborne, but took down a large tree in the woods next door, and a very large white ash in my back yard.
The other one was on the ground a few blocks up my street, and hit a bunch of houses in Bridgeton, and did further damage as it traveled across the county and into Illinois.
Edit: That was the Good Friday tornado of 2011.
I was outside on the front porch each time, and loved every second of it! 😁👍
That house only had a carport, but yeah, unless it looks like a direct hit, I wanna see it!

Ive had ptsd with storms ever since. The storm sirens right down the road make my stomach turn even on test days when the sky is clear. As we heard those damn things blaring from 5 different tornadic storms on top of us within a 3 hour period. Then when the big one came through it was just nonstop for 30 mins. Problem is even the middle class in these parts are hard pressed to be able to just drop $2K-5K+ on a shelter in this twisted joke of an economy. And hardly nobody in these areas have basments as many live in poorly built 40+ year homes or trailers/double wides. Im in a double wide myself, which i wouldnt even wanna be caught in a ef0 in. Thank you for your service! I'm an Okie living in Texas. I still have family in the OkC area though, so I'm there often. In fact one of my cousins is a paramedic out of Norman, last name is Lauderdale. I know there's lots of you, but thought the world might be small enough in this case.
I was giving my senior presentation at OU during the May 3, '99 tornado. I was actually living in Del City and left as the tornado was near Bridge Creek. Thank God for AM radio back then! I listened on my way to track the storm. It had approached the vicinity of an intersection I had passed about 5 minutes prior. Whew! Left Norman around 7:30pm to get back to Del City. Didn't get home until nearly 11pm. My dad was freaked out because we didn't have cell phones, so he went to check Moore and Norman hospitals to see if I was there. I didn't know where all the damage was, so I didn't know what back routes to take so I ended up in the detour traffic from I35. That's what took so long.
Very wild seeing all the damage on the drive back. A neighborhood of brick homes was completely leveled down to the slabs about a mile from my parents home. Right around the corner from Tinker housing.

I keep mine in my bedroom. The alarm is loud enough to be heard anywhere in the house but I am most worried about a storm happening while I am asleep. Having this has allowed me to feel safer.

We had thunder snow today! So cool!!! Currently 5 inches of snow plus here in southwestern Illinois near St. Louis. The weather man here predicted dusting to 1 inch at noon today, however, by 2 pm we had 5 inches of snow and higher drifts. I believe Ryan you said 4 inches when reporting on this particular storm when you mentioned St. Louis. You were much more accurate in your prediction. Thanks Ryan for all you do. I was camping in Newberry volcano's crater last year with my brother and we watched a thunderstorm come in only to find it snowing when it arrived instead of raining! I've seen lightning in blizzards before, mostly in big lake effect storms on the great lakes, but this was a regular thunderstorm that dumped snow, and it lasted about two hours not half or a whole day or more. It looks so cool and the sound of the thunder is so muffled unless they're very close!

So weird that I came across this video as I was just updating our storm kit today. Complete with water, snacks, birth certificates, cash, lights, batteries & battery packs, first aid kit, weather radio and a boat horn. It’s just a regular thing I’ve always done before spring here in Oklahoma. You can never be too prepared, especially as a single mom of three. I have to always be on alert so that I can make sure that I have enough time to get us all down in the shelter quickly and safely.
Hoping for a mild storm season for everyone. It never happens that way, but we can always hope!

I had an in ground shelter put in my garage. I’ve been through several tornados and running through your yard to get in a shelter is freighting. Also the safe room types are no good. I live 60 miles south from Joplin and that was said amongst locals. They get blown away too. So I went in ground and I’m ready. I live in the dark blue zone. Stay safe everyone.

i agree regarding the safe room ones, but unfortunately digging down isnt possible in a lot of places bc of the geography (for example, in the southeast the water table is often very high, so if you dig down to put in a tornado shelter youre going to be pumping out water, fighting leaks, dealing w flooding around it, etc). hopefully our technology will continue to advance to keep everyone safe!

of course, tornado alley, back in the 80's may have been a bit different.

It's not that bad. Very seldom do we have th I se F5's. There's a lot of F1's. They pretty much just take trees down. Listen for the tornado siren and hit a shelter. When you REALLY need to hit the shelter, your phone beeps loudly. And even then, the tornado is within ten miles from you and most of the time doesn't hit you directly. An F1 will tear siding and some shingles off your house but it doesn't collapse completely. That's in movied. F5's will. I don't think Minnesota has had one since 2010.

Not only was the tornado rare for time of year it was, but also where it occurred. Based upon wind speeds and damage done the tornado was ranked an F1 with a wind speed of 110 miles an hour. It was very nearly an F2. We were out of our home from February 15th to Easter Sunday of that year. I live in Oklahoma, I’ve been wondering how our tornado season will be like

@@the_algorithmIt depends. Our most tornados in a year happened during an El Nino year in 2019, but the least was in 2014. He mentions 2016 as being the same as this year which was us hitting our yearly average. We didn't have an increase or decrease. I highly doubt this year will end up being a substantial year at all though especially with it also being compared to 1991 which was still within our yearly average so just expect the normal and just stay prepared. The closer you live the Tulsa the less likely you'll see a strong tornado and flip that for Oklahoma City.

Not surprising since we're at the end of the ice age. Transition from cool to warm always brings an influx of storms

Liquid IV! Love Liquid IV it really helps me when I get dehydrated. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. How ever it is A1! I just have to give up some groceries to buy it.
