There are 2 scenarios I would like to mention.
Scenario 1: I found a woman’s purse on the ground. I looked inside it, and it had some cash and some credit cards in it. Luckily, it also had a piece of paper with her address on it. Instead of taking it to the cops, I became the hero and walked 1.5 miles to the location in the wallet just to hand the wallet, with all its contents, over to the owner. I didn’t steal any of the cash. I got rewarded, by the husband/boyfriend, with a discount to a brewery. This happened in 2015.
Scenario 2: After partying late at night, I walked home, and I found $100 (5 $20 bills) on the sidewalk. Luckily, there was no wind. Also, there was no one around, so I just kept the money. Poor drunk must have dropped their money. This happened in 2017.
My rule of thumb is: “If you find money and there is a name attached to it, like a wallet, credit card, or ID, give it to the owner or hand it to the police. If you find money and there is NO name attached to it, like loose cash, and there’s no one around, keep the money.”
