- Hunting public land can be difficult. So many factors play into the moment of truth that our simple human processing abilities sometimes can’t calculate all the variables.
After a hard week of hunting, mostly ground hunting, we resort to aggressive calling tactics since the rut is really picking up. However, we are unable to seal the deal on quite a few good mature bucks. After a morning hunt, I glass up a big buck in a canyon about 3/4 of a mile away. We decide it is worth heading in to get a closer look. Little did I know that closer would mean 8 yards and shooting my biggest buck ever!
Chaos ensues as what seems like a perfect shot through the vitals ends up not producing the desired outcome. I am super thankful for great friends and hunting partners. Without Tyler and Eric, this deer wouldn’t be feeding us right now.

After a necropsy, I had hit the upper portion of both lungs on the first shot. It would have been fatal, but who knows how long with as tough as that deer was.

It’s possible. But I think that was a brand new IW, so shouldn’t have been the case.

So confused by that editing. The deer was walking after the shot to all the sudden a follow up shot followed by a phone call saying he's dead?
In our state the person to finish the deer is the person who legally has to tag it. Must not apply everywhere

Things would have got real interesting if another hunter not in your group shot it the second time- the first shot may have been lethal over time but who knows. Those type of things get real messy in regards to whos deer it is...first blood versus killing shot , etc

Essentially, it was a double lung in the upper lobe. The broadhead didn't cut well with the bleeders. Lethal, but not fast.

Sorry, sometimes in the interview it is hard to remember everything with a giant buck in front of you. Hit the top of both lungs. We went into detail over on The Element Podcast if you want to give it a listen.

CZcams doesn’t like that style of video much. Maybe this off season we can do a diagram-type example and show some illustrated models. We discussed it in detail on E227 of The Element Podcast.
What was the synopsis on the first shot? I want to know the angle he was hit from, and what organs it hit. I had a deer behave very similarly last year that I hit quartered away.
We actually filmed a deep dive into this, however, it’s hard to find a place to publish it, that it won’t get removed. Essentially, the shot was in the triangle on the entrance, and exited in front of the shoulder on the exit. It was a double long, but Only cut the top lobe of both lungs lethal, but not quick. This was an occasion where, shooting a fixed blade I believe didn’t help.
So what damage did your shot do and was it going to be lethal
Yes, but not a quick as I would’ve liked. Hit both lungs, but in the upper lobes. I would think lethal within minutes, but who knows. Apparently that is not what happened.

I’ve seen giant muy grandes in San Antonio Texas public parks than I’ve ever seen in the wild and these idiots there will hand feed them not knowing if they’re wild or not, even during the rut, I’m almost certain someone has met tha business end of an angry buck at some point

First shot was too far forward.. would have punched through brisket and not collected heart.. I assume that's what ya found when ya gutted him

Public hunting in Texas is like a joke. The rich man and their high fence have monetized hunting. Deer hunting in Texas is the most expensive way to get free meat.
Try looking at lakes, every lake in Texas except one is man made and most are army core of engineers and huntable. While I have a good chunk of private, I archery hunt multiple public spots in central Texas
@@BartTheSpartan thats a great idea. We have Hoards Creek close by. I do alot of bank fishing there and see tons of deer every time i go in the off season. Its an Army Corp of Engineers lake.. ima look into it thanks man and good luck this yr.
