Two cowardly two open the discuss what scientology is.
If that is not a cult, I am uncle sam and santa claus together.
Please join my cult! I call it, "Jason's New Age Church of Takin' It Easy!" The rules are simple: just take it easy!:)
I think Scientology should be on this list.
they didnt do anything real shocking
WatchMojo probably has too many Hollywood connections 💀
WatchMojo probably has too many Hollywood connections.
WatchMojo probably has too many Hollywood connections.
They have so many scandals, it would take several videos. Scientology is scary!!
Kudos for not referring to Jonestown as mass suicide. There were a few hundred children, murdered by adults. And many adults were either shot or forced to drink/inject the poison
Anybody else trip out once they realized it was a 30 minute vid for a top 10 list
I lost interest at 8min🫢
I hate it when cults take away childhood . 😢 So sad.
That’s the point. More control 😢
First rule of Solar Temple: Do not speak about Solar Temple. Welp, I can't be in that one, I talk too much.
'first rule of fight club: don't talk about fight club"
The People’s Temple will forever be a true horror that occupies a part of my mind. Jones’ descent into panic, the loss of life, the entire thing… It’s such a terrible example of human disillusionment and aggressive control. I cannot even begin to imagine what that reality was like for the people who lost their lives that day.
I was 9 when it happened. My parents didn’t prevent me from watching or reading the news, so I heard about it for days. Later read a larger magazine article about it. It didn’t scare me; I was sad and confused. Why did adults do and believe such terrible things? I’m still trying to understand it. 😕
I saw a doc on it where they played the actual recordings during the mass suicide & I had to turn to another channel; it was that upsetting. You can hear children crying and begging for help as they were dying and even some adults even realized what agony they were enduring
@@LucyLioness100 Oh that’s too horrible. I’m surprised the filmmakers would even include any audio. It’s bad enough that some law enforcement or legal authorities likely had to listen to it. I hope family members passed on that - it would have been too traumatic.
Right. And the ones who refused to drink or tried running were shot😔
@@Beth_Alice_Kaplan yeah it was truly distressing to listen to & knowing that those young men & women were in pain. I think they got permission from any surviving family and law enforcement to play excerpts and the expressions on their faces were just heartbreaking
The problem with some cults, people blindly follow without actually taking into consideration what the risks are for believing in propaganda.
That religion right 😂
They don't take into consideration any risks because they don't see any. People blindly follow because they're generally desperate to fit in, to feel hope and be loved. Almost all cults prey on these human desires within people and lure them in, while making it almost impossible to get out.
@@beck86szswqsst
It's almost like they are lost souls, without direction or purpose.
That guy from Heaven's Gate, just the look in his eyes, no one is at the controls. Even if I knew nothing about him, the red flags and alarms in my head would be going off. Insane, and dangerous.
He's on a spaceship now, you're not
Those eyes always have me the creeps. How intelligent people got sucked in by them.
@@t2av159 good riddance
"A mas departure from life" is one hell of a way to put it. 💀
Thats the CZcams algorithm censorship of certain words.
I remember where I was when the Hale-Bopp comet passed by. I was doing volunteer work for the American Farm Laborers in California's Central Valley with no idea of what was transpiring in San Diego until my work crew and I returned, then Marshall Applewaite and his cult were all over the news. The things that happen when you're out of town...
"Those who can make you believe absurdities can also make you commit atrocities." - Voltaire
Luckily we've learned from all of this and are pretty vigilant when it comes to identifying cults in our midst. All it would take would be for a cult leader to obtain a position of power and influence and they could really tear this country apart, all the while probably trying to tell you that they're going to make it great again...just like Hitler.
How come Scientology is not in this list? 😮
Probably because they'd sue.
@@CuteWholesomeGrrl true
I was in The Cult ... she sold sanctuary ... it rocked
I joined because the world dragged me down.
the thing about these cults is they are led by extremely charismatic people who are able to hone in on a person's insecurities and use them to convince them that they are missing something and their "group" can provide it for them. that's why so often these cults end with either suicide or the members being imprisoned for whatever crime they were convinced to commit
And it's interesting that many of us would not find them charismatic in any form. Yet others are fooled into devoting their lives to such evil people
@@jennyfab312 it all goes back to finding the people who are most vulnerable and weak to exploit. most of the people are looking for something to believe in and are desperate to find it so these cult leaders single them out and have them spread the message
@@jennyfab312because they don’t seem evil at first they seem lovely and wise lol then later when the evil shows, they’re down with it because they trust the leader who is only doing whatever they’re doing out of “love” or to “help” or “justly punish” 😡
Jonestown doesn't get anymore shocking than this.
@@Funny.Man101 imagine spamming multiple jokes in multiple comments. You literally have no life

The Flavor-Aid was to die for.
Jonestown was a harrowing tragedy, but it's not the end of shocking events. Similar risks persist today from extremist groups and charismatic leaders. Vigilance and education are key to preventing such horrors from repeating
When I heard about Allison Mack that kind of broke my heart. Because I had a crush on her when I was a teenager.😢
Cults will always fascinate me. The fact that the founder of said cult can influence so many people to believe whatever bs they were spewing. If you truly think about it, these people have something about them that makes people believe them. Granted it’s sometimes drugs that influence but a lot of times it’s just words.
I took have always been fascinated by how seemingly intelligent people are influenced by these people. It still occurs today which is shocking. Would love to read the reasoning behind all their choices.
They have something the members are looking for - acceptance. Of course the cult leader lies and tells different people different things. "Only I can help you" is powerful to the vulnerable.
Let's not forget that L Ron Hubbard started a religion on a bet to his friend. And used a recycled sci-fi story to con millions into believing him
@@SeashelleBytheseashore true that it does
WatchMojo's various Hollywood connections are most likely preventing them from including Scientology on this list.
I didn’t even consider that. Makes sad sense though.
Watch MOJO is so far liberal anything controversial would never make a list. Just like the Waco seige. It's shown that the branch davidions were the instigators but there are many witnesses that said atf was to blame. Not members but witnesses.
I'm not pro politics at all because it divides people. But my god do they slant against Republicans so much.
Please, maybe the ones on the list are more wacky.
Waco was one of the live footage I remembered seeing... I was about 6 at the time. I stuck at home thanks to the storm of the century, so there were few things to do... Like watch TV.
I got married three days before Waco blew up, I didn't even know what was going on before April 19.
"Jonestown" - the origin for the phrase:
DON'T drink the grape Kool-Aid !!! :-(
Actually, the people of Jonestown drank Flavor-Aid.
There is a documentary on The Rajneeshpuram and their issues with the locals; turns out the locals were super racist towards many of its members and even shot at them and tried to get them forcefully removed from the country multiple times. The Rajneeshpuram tried to get authorities to help but they were as bad as the locals, so they took law into their own hands and fired back with the poisoning of the locals. Most of the attacks on the locals were set up not by the leader but his second in command.
The moment I hear Rebecca's voice, I know I clicked on the right video
I always wonder if cult leaders really believe in what they say.
There is one thing that people usually don't know about LDS. It is less obvious now since it has been segregated on a different website and rebranded but they have impressive genealogical data. In fact, they go around the world scanning public and religious registers. And all of that is because they believe that someone who has not been baptized in their faith will not go to eden. So they use the genealogical records to baptize dead people.
Tony Alamo needs to be on the list.
I hate that Sharon Tate was taken, but the others are rarely mentioned by name. I wish they were listed out of respect too when mentioning what Manaon commanded.
Sharon was the most famous name in the mass murder at Ciello Drive, but Jay Sebring was one of the top stylists of the time and Abigail Folger was of course the heiress to the Folger empire
Unsurprisingly, the Teslamic faithful have managed to have their messianic leader Ego Muskrat removed from the list...🤭
I don't know how people can just listen to whatever bullshit comes out of people's mouths and just take it as true without even thinking twice about it. People can claim that they specifically can hear God or they are the reincarnation of God or Jesus and people will just believe them no questions asked
Because they don’t just immediately believe. They’re groomed. They’re befriended or whatever, invited to stuff, treated well and they slowly start believing. And when they want to question they don’t because they don’t want to lose the “wonderful” experience they’re a part of. So then when they start having children they indoctrinate them so they DO believe it immediately. It’s a horrible deliberate process.
@@stevenandcarminabeedle9089 In other words, cults operate the same way that missionaries of the various churches do.
Jonestown shows us what a destructive and doomsday cult can do.
This is some classic watch mojo content
Hope people can escape this craziness and twisted beliefs thanks for bringing light to this
Years ago, I heard the Phoenix brothers parents were missionaries. What an interesting way to spin it.
It’s true though that their parents were missionaries for the cult; Joaquin and River even backed that up
Any cultleader arrested should be charged with Domestic Violence. Because each member technically have a "relationship " with the leader. No different from a romantic relationship.
Agreed
The world is crazy
10:13 Not related to the story, but the boy's blue jacket says Barnum & Tenny Body Shop, Lansing Michigan. I live in Lansing, and they are still in business. When I lived on that side of town I took my car there for service. It was just a surprise to see a hometown reference in a video about Waco, Texas.

In the Philippines, we have a wanted criminal claiming to be the son of God.
And a preacher who dodges the law.
And also a man who claimed that Jesus is only a man who acts as a middle man while their founder is an Angel sent by God Hinself.
Yeah and It was Quiboloy.
I forgot that also there's a preacher who escaped abroad due to legal cases.

Not a cult.

Catholic church?
not a cult, a dreadful, sickening organisation that is a world religion, not a cult. Please read a fucking dictionary before using words you clearly don't understand.
You missed Synanon, founded by Charles Dietrich in the 1950’s. This cult was fashioned after AA, purporting sobriety
I really can't believe that these cults actually existed
Me either
Anybody notice how so many of these cults began during the chaos of the 60's.
With the chaos of current day maybe we should keep our eyes open to similar ones popping up today.
What about the cult of “La Santa Muerte”? 💀
Matamoros...
I've a feeling that's going to be a future 'Mad Lad' on Dank's channel.
Please do Top 10 Games Yet To Receive An Adaptation (God or War, Bioshock, Strider, Fire Emblem, etc.)!!
I would include the Jim Roberts Brethren.
I lived in Synanon for a few years; I was there when she was beautiful then I watched her change. I went in because I was a druggie at the age of 14. Synanon worked with getting people off the drugs and alcohol. The day Synanon changed broke my heart because I loved living there. I lived on 5 different properties each property had if own atmosphere and beauty. If Synanon stayed the same nonviolent ways I would still be there.
so i saw some people point the fact that the videos 28 minutes for just top 10
was i the only one who realized that this is a complitation of multiple top ten videos lol and not just a really long video
Most of these I’ve never heard of before and I (former cult member) watch a lot of cult related material, good job Mojo
Very unusual. 🎉
Nice
This is why.i avoid the salad bar
I'm no psychiatrist, but these poor souls sound like they were predispositioned anyway with thoughts of suicide, and these cults gave them the opportunity to go through with it without the guilt they may have felt for leaving their loved ones.
Antaras de la luz should be on the list, his cult ended a baby's life, They said he had the should of satan and burned him in a bonfire, The Baby was only 3 days old
Didn’t want to touch Scientology?

Not very cool WatchMojo for including the same stories in one video. We know you can do better than that 🙃😉
Scientology is worse than almost all of these
Idk, hard to top the People's Temple 😕
Nice branding by Heaven’s Gate using the Packer’s “G” for their t-shirts…haha
The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.
And the gullibility
How ironic that so many supposed paths to enlightenment are really paths to evil.
I think Westboro Baptist should be considered a cult. And MAGA.
The January 6ers! Their leader have them buying bibles from him, ironically he can’t say his favorite scripture 😂 he had them destroy the capital for him because he believed if I can’t be there, no one should.
Like I just told somebody else why don’t you please stop do you mean all the Biden followers that bow down before him this has nothing to do with politics. I don’t know why people can’t keep politics out of their mouth for five minutes grow up. Aside from that why don’t you do your research and see what really happened on January 6? like I said this is not about politics. Must love Donald Trump so much that you can’t stop talking about him.
@@letshaveacuppa_official Please. You just admitted to being a sheep in that cult. What really happened on January 6th was devotees of a certain man went and tried to overthrow democracy. what about the crimes of the Roman Catholic church throughout the history?
It's something wreck with us, as humanity...
LDS Church could alone make this list but didn't, I am disappointed.
Because they are still around and on another list.
Because they are viewed as “legitimate.” Scientology, despite what they want to believe, are on the less legitimate side of the spectrum, especially now.
The FDLS yes, the regular LDS church isn't a cult. I am LDS and I've never done anything really different from other churches I attended as a child. We use water for communion, tithe(though I never have, because I don't have a regular job and no one has ever said anything about it,) have missionaries(other churches do also.)
The mainstream LDS church doesn't practice polygamy, we don't abuse our members, and you aren't forced to do anything.People think we are the same as the FDLS and we are NOT. They split off after the mainstream banned polygamy.
FLDS is on the list at about 23 min
FLDS just wear clothing styles from a hundred years ago, and still practice polygamy. Otherwise, not really that different.
What is is about the mid-80s to mid-90s that brought so many disturbing cults out of the woodwork?

I looked up Happy Science and immediately found their website and my local office/church. It's very weird but the fact that he's selling books that supposedly tell you about the 'structure' of the spirit world, how Hell works and explaining the teachings of Buddha is just wrong. He's no divine being, just a con man, convincing people to donate their money and give it to his 'church', aka him.

@@chancehendrix7139 Not really. All of Heaven's Gate, to my understanding, willingly sacrificed themselves. A lot of the people at Jonestown were actually forced into "drinking the kool aid", literally. I would say Jonestown was less "mass departure from life" and more "forced departure".

I do want to point something out though. When you look at the human body, it really is just a vessel for our consciousness. And I guess consciousness would be the person running the computer. 😅
