I'm impressed, I really was expecting to be disappointed by this tutorial but kudos to you Dr TIP, excellent result.
THIS IS THE ONE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YES
Super hyped you've been waiting on specific stuff! Hope it helps. Shoot me more Ideas if you want to learn anything specific!
@@thirdislandproductions9708 Definitely!! I know you already have a bit in "HOW TO MIX REGGAE" | Reggae Mixing Tutorial", but a video focused on Mix Bus processing would be awesome to learn from.
Yeah man! TBH, I don't do too much mix bus processing except usually adding a pultec EQP and Using Reasons Master Bus Comp (Which is essentially an SSL Bus comp. Sometimes I use a tape emulator on the mix bus as well. Definitely a great idea. I'll put that down for a future video. Thanks a bunch!@@StoneLionProduction
@@thirdislandproductions9708 Probably one reason why your mixes stay so clean! And no problem! I'd be honored to collaborate sometime - you're a big inspiration and definitely help push my sound in the right direction 🙏
Just curious on the 4 string bass. Did you compress going in? I have an LA 610 that I use the limit on it to even out the notes going in. Looking for a Jack Johnson bass tone but struggling a bit. This definitely helps but I never see tutorials on pre compression going into a daw
Love the video by the way
Thanks a ton! Yeah the 4 string was actually recorded by someone else DI into a focusrite Scarlett. So no compression on this one. I track compression through an 1176 usually. It helps balance out the recording and gives it more round character. I will say you don't need to track through a compressor to get a great sounding bass tone. The performance and EQ on bass is the most important thing to get right.
Thanks so much. I will try no compression while tracking or minimal compression and see it that helps. I just notice sometimes when I play a G or an A on the low E string the note sounds wobbly and not tight.
Any suggestions?
I figured out my own issue. Low frequencies from the acoustic guitar were conflicting with the bass guitar. As soon as I put a low cut on the acoustic up to 100hz it cleaned up the low end.
@@jdgilbert3672 Awesome. Yeah When in doubt high pass everything that doesn't need low end in the mix. Once I learned that my mixes changed drastically
@@jdgilbert3672 Look up a video "Two Knobs That'll Change Your Mixing" The channel is "Reason Studios" best video on the high and low pass
Your kick and snare seem as though they are focussed on a close fundamental, sounds fantastic, is this an intentional thing? Are you cutting the subs from the kick to acheive this or pushing the low of the snare ?
Yeah I’m not sure about the fundamental of the kick but the snare sits at roughly 180hz -200hz. So I totally agree. they sound very close to one another and kind of compliment each other. The way I mic’d the kick is with no resonant head directly pointing at the beater. AKG D112 and a sub kick. But optimal frequencies I boost for it are 10k and 3.2k for the click and clarity. Because of the way it’s micd it’s rare that I need to boost a lot in the low end because naturally Punchy.
No reso head seems like a standard in reggae, especially on toms, not so sure about kicks but the result kicks... could be a thing.@@thirdislandproductions9708
My reso heads are off on my toms as well haha. I'm not a seasoned drummer and suck a tuning reso heads so it worked out lol@@jemwand2530
What software is this called?
I’m mixing digitals instruments on my iPhone 11 Pro Max GarageBand. I’m looking for an alternative plugin for the Lindell 50. Trying to find a combo eq + compressor. Any suggestions please let me know, give thanks
Greetings. I wish I was more familiar. I am not sure! look up channel strip plugin for garageband
@@thirdislandproductions9708 could not find anything to bus the drums just ended up running two compressors on the chain .
Can you do a review of MODO bass, and compare it to your real bass? I do reggae and can not get a full bass sound out of MODO. Your real bass sound full. Very few people have compared a real bass playing the same part with the same vol vs MODO
I don’t have modo bass unfortunately so I can review it. I could try to download a free trial but I’m just as unfamiliar it. What DAW do you use ? Look for sine wave bass patches where it’s all just low end. Look up some videos on how to make sub bass with a synth and it should do the trick
@@thirdislandproductions9708 thanks, i wonder if they would give it to you for free since you are a great youtuber.
@@gcastroism I could reach out to them but not sure if they would be willing lol
