- A new #BTS series from UB40. We sat down with original founding member, Jimmy Brown - UB40's drummer of over 45 years. Musician, film critic and astute social commentator - Jimmy's got A LOT to say about everything!
Our first epsiode is published on the anniversary of one of the band's most popular songs - One in Ten, a protest song reflecting the anger of 80s Britain under Thatcher. And it's one of the songs that Jimmy predominantly wrote.
In this interview Jimmy shares the inspiration behind the track, his early life experiences that defined one of the biggest selling songs of the era.

Love this! One in ten has always been an inspirational song to me, coming from a working class family as well. My father was active for the union, and when i got to know UB40 it felt like i knew them, because their songs hit so close to home. Nowadays its getting worse and worse. My son followed his grandfather in his footsteps, he became an union worker and its his job to represent the working class and fight for their rights. Whoever reads this: JOIN THE UNION! Big love, Cindy
Jimmy Brown - legend.
Not only for what he says on here, but also as a drummer who was the root of the UB40 sound, especially the early (classic) stuff.
One of their best tunes imo, I remember when it came out, great Bassline
❤❤❤🎉🌞🎶🎵🙏best regards fr: 🇨🇭
199 like good I like ub40 song to much ❤️💪😊 🇱🇰
My dad was a coalminer working in the pit face, risked his life every shift he did, Thatcher destroyed our communities, our men and our families, life in our communities was never the same again. I remember as a child waving my dad goodbye to his shift terrified that something would happen to him, brave men every one of them. Thatcher was pure evil
Great watch thanks. Jimmy for PM
1 in 10 is UB40 at its best. The Rhythm Section! 🔥 Horns, message 👌🏿
Wassup JB!
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Brilliant 👍
Are the old school heads here
Well said Jimmy.
Spot on, mate! ♥♥
They are the best❤
Fantastic commentary as always, Jimmy. Classic tune, classic lyrics. Still relevant... And where is the Revolution? One is needed now more than ever. How much more can people put up with in this country before enough is enough? Or do we just love pain and misery? It is absolutely shocking down here on the shop floor, it really is. People are struggling like F**k. When energy companies are making "record" profits of £30+ billion, and at the same time people are paying more than ever for their energy bills. WTF! Yep, we just put up with it. We accept it. Moan... whine... groan... BRING ON THE REVOLUTION! aha!
Support the union, stick up for your neighbours, be radically kind and loving to those that desperately need it - remember, we ain’t numbers! The revolution will come when we are together in solidarity.
Saludos desde Colombia ❤... Amo UB 40 como me hubiese gustado poder saborearlos más ❤❤❤ me quedo con ese legado que dejaron al mundo
Samo story in my hometown in Serbia...a lot of us work as miners..nice pay..strong union..actually it was..they are killing it slowly :(
Even i'm from Holland, i know what you mean Jim
Desde Colombia, un saludo especial para Ub 40 mi banda preferida, soñe con verlos en el año 2012, pero, ...
One in ten, una de mis preferidas.
Bueno... Sindicalizada activa hasta que muera. se que habra un mejor amanecer para los trabajadores.
Spot on analysis of what was going on at the time. As someone from a South Wales mining valley I can concur with every word. I was 16 when One in Ten came out. I wouldn't say it converted me politically, the song just documented what was happening around me with great music adding to its appeal. The ill informed often talk of the dark days of the 70s. I'll tell you one thing, nobody in full time had to use food banks then. They didn't exist, there was no need for them.
✌️💞☯️
Great song from a great band from my home city of Birmingham, England.
I love the Official UB40.❤
The UK government have been screwing the British public over deliberately for decades.
I'm absolutely sick of the Tories.
And Labour are even worse.
There is more people in the UK living in poverty now compared to the 1980s because of government greed & selfishness & corruption.
Hear hear
Jimmy 😂😂😂😂 de great
