    Hi Sarah,
    I’ve finally had time to watch your unload on my TV! I loved your tiles! Such a great idea. I might try your dots technique, it looks so good. I also love the blue combo with the blue surf, I have it. I love the Black Aventurine but I’ve had some small cracks develop days later. Like dunting but superficial, and because of that I stopped using it. Maybe I should try again.
    Thank you so much for sharing and it’s always so helpful to look at the before pictures!🙏🏻💞

      Thanks so much Ana!!! Love this pottery community that we have going on here! Sharing and learning from one another...its just awesome! Thank you for all of your advise too, I have added AH to my wax and I've testing it out right now on a kiln load. fingers crossed that it helps with some of the warping...As for Black Aventurine, I haven't had an issue but even if there is some crazing I only use it on the outside so it's still food safe, and I don't mind the look, it can add interest to the glaze in my opinion.🥰

    Oh, I'm all in on the Wine Zoom! Great stuff, as always Sarah! Sorry I missed the live. It didn't show up in my feed until today. 😞
    Have you considered firing the keepers directly on the shelf? You need Advancer shelves in your life! Also, I think the pool sign had several things working against it. Top shelf, fired across a crack, etc. I've been told (haven't tested enough to prove/disprove) that plates should be on a middle shelf where they will get even heating and cooling, and never spanning two shelves. If you wax bottoms, you can put alumina hydrate in the wax. It's much cleaner than putting silica on your shelves, which can fly around in the kiln and land on other pieces, and is a pain to clean out after the firing is over. This is a common thing to do with porcelain to prevent plucking.
    On the warping of that last butter lid, if you flare the rim out just slightly it may prevent some warping. Also, you can wipe the glaze off the rim and fire it on the shelf. Then polish with your Diamond Core sanding pads until it's super smooth.
    You, Star, Tiffinie, Anna, Lisa and Nat have been wowing me with these glaze combos. I finally broke down and bought some pre-mixed glazes! Haven't tried them yet, so stay tuned!
    I'm super excited to see what your tiles look like when you put them together! That would be great for a test tile wall!

      Hi Pat!! Thanks for all of these suggestions! I read you comment a week ago, but I've working feverishly to get some pieces finished, they are in the kiln and cooling as I type this! Sorry that I'm only now sitting down to reply. I did purchase AH and added to my wax and I'm testing it on a butter keeper to see if it works🤞🏼 mind you, I forgot the part of you message where you don't suggest it laying on the shelf as it could fly around in the firing...yikes!!! I went a little AH happy so I'm terrified right now! 😳

    Another potter told me today that flat pieces, like your Pool Rules plaque, are prone to cracking when they are fired on the top shelf in the kiln. Pieces fired on the top shelf are exposed to more thermal shock.

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thank you! A few people were making this suggestion. It was the second flat large plaque that I've fired. I've fired trays and things but new at flat slabs. The first warped because i lay it on kiln supports as I was worried the glaze was going to run off the sides...it didn't. This one cracked, and I suspect that thermal shock may have played a factor...Thanks again and your support means the world to me! Cheers!

  • @MOLLIMEDIA
    @MOLLIMEDIA Před 4 měsíci +2

    Large flat pieces are prone to cracking because of expansion and contraction. Try putting a light layer of grog down on the kiln shelf under the piece to facilitate movement. Also add a rim of some kind around the piece to strengthen the edges. Good luck. 💕

  • @AS-hc8fk
    @AS-hc8fk Před 4 měsíci +3

    Sarah - on your butter keeper, try putting a small stilt on the inside of the butter keeper then rest the stilt on a kiln furniture to lift the butter keeper off the kiln shelf. This might prevent from warping. I saw that on one of Vaughan Smith’s videos.

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Amazing! I just commented to someone that I just saw someone suggest this couldn't remember where or whom I saw this technique from...thank you! I will definitely try that...I also purchased alumina hydrate which will hopefully act like ball bearings and help the piece float on the kiln shelf. I'm testing this out right now as I have put 1 butter keeper in this load, if that prevents the warping I'll be very pleased. Thank you sooooo much!!!

    I believe your pieces are warping because of the way they are being stilted. The pink butter dish that warped, you can actually see the three points where they were sitting atop the three stilts used.

    • @cbdj67
      @cbdj67 Před 4 měsíci +2

      Yes. The next one in soft aqua warped too and I think you suspect correctly. It’s the only “New” thing you’re doing. You don’t generally have warping in past kiln unloads.

      @SarahWaltonPottery  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thank you, I was really bummed out with all the warping. I put them up on the stilts because I was worried about run off and being a little too extra...uggh...I testing out using a layer of Alumina Hydrate on the rim of my butter keeper to see if it is golden goose...stay tuned!

    Hi Sarah..missed your live but wanted to let you know that the pool piece might have cracked because it was spanned over two half kiln shelf's....one real distinct possibility for sure, especially if the two half shelves are not exactly...EXACTLY...the same height (ask me how I know LOL) also the addition of 1/2" or so of the open air between the shelves make it even more of a possibility to crack (again, ask me how I know LOL)

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  Před 4 měsíci +3

      Thanks you soooooo much for this! Live and learn! I wondered if having it span the two shelves would be a problem, oh well…some people were suggesting to use Alumina Hydrate. Which I will definitely try as well. The Livestream was long but it was fun! Everyone was chatting amongst each other and with me! It was a real mingle! Hope you check it out afterwards and you can offer me any other insights with some of my warped pieces!! Ugggh! Thanks again! Cheers!

    • @micheledickey4066
      @micheledickey4066 Před 4 měsíci

      This is exactly what I was going to say. My kiln shelves are 21”but I only use half shelves. I bought several 15” shelves to put really big pieces on so they don’t span over 2. Definitely use alumina hydrate on anything that big it really helps to allow the piece to flex In the kiln instead of sticking.

      @SarahWaltonPottery  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Whoopsie! sorry about that! In my previous video I show a picture of the before but this time I forgot to tell you all what I did....my chaotic brain 🤪...it's Spectrum's Pearl White x2 inside. Outside and top of rim Amaco's Black Aventurine x2 followed by a wide 2 inch band in the middle of Honey Flux x2. I wanted to see if there would be a difference if I used Flux Blossom so I did that on one of the butter keepers instead of HF and I don't see a difference between the them. Also, In my previous video I did x3 of both glazes and got more movement and more of the glitter in the BA. I'm firing two mugs right now with the x3 combo and see which I prefer...stay tuned!
