it’s really interesting to see how honest they were. I lived in Korea as a student five years ago and went back to visit this past April. I, too, noticed the huge influx of foreigners living there compared to the mid 2010s or even prior to that. On the street, I overheard a lot of foreigners speaking korean really well so that was nice to see. But I did overhear some rumors about the behaviors they were bringing with them. I truly believe if you’re planning to live there you should try to assimilate as much as possible. You don’t have to love the food or speak fluently but at least understand that there was a history and a culture and society before you got there. I’m planning to move to Seoul next year and a lot of the reasons I liked korea (no catcalling, cleaner than US cities, instinctual queuing lol) i feel disappointed that some foreigners are f*cking that up! Newsflash foreigners LIVING in korea (if you’re just visiting it’s whatever) but if you live and work or a have a business or family there, SPEND TIME WITH KOREAN PEOPLE. Get to know them and their culture OUTSIDE of kpop and kdramas. Step out of your comfort zone and don’t isolate yourself to other foreigners or just English-speaking Koreans. You’ll have a much more eye-opening and life changing experience, trust me.

Laura Luna I don't understand why Koreans would think westerners are "easy" since everyone is different. They have the same dating culture in Korea as in the west. Many Korean man follow western girls on the street “to talk” and then act as if we have to answer them because we are foreigners.
One young guy recently followed me into a store and said hi and I ignored him and he asked me “are you ignoring me?” As if I had some kind of obligation to talk to a stranger because I’m a foreigner...
There are those kind of people everywhere so don’t make it a western stereotype to cat call ... it’s rude and disrespectful everywhere else too .

I don't hear Koreans speaking German when they visit Germany either. I don't expect tourists to speak my mother tongue. That's impossible. A few basic phrases? Doable. But that's about it really.

there are soooo many koreans and other asian that visit Paris (it's where I live) and didn't hear many Koreans say like "bonjour","merci" or "au revoir"
sometimes you can hear some people say it but it's sometimes not understandable because of there accent or something like that.they usually all speak English cuz it's "an international language" so I find it unfair that we have to use those Korean phrases

i think mostly kpop,kdrama fans could like say those phrases but if you just visit the country while you not a fan of kpop,kdrama,...

yeh thats what i thought i know its really nice to hear someone to ask in the language but some times you feel shy that your going to embarrass yourself and sometimes they wont understand so i get if people just use English most people speak it these days so its alot easier to understand
The video is about foreigners LIVING in Korea, not VISITING it. If you live in a country you should learn the language...
No matter which country you came from.. Most importantly is respect those countries culture and laws.. Never bring your bad habits to the country..

@@bellraven7686 I agree with you on that some English people (mainly the younger group) can be extremely rude and disrespectful. Whenever I visit Spain I always respect their culture and even learn some phrases. However, who I'm referring to are people that decide to live here if we say anything we're called racist. I just wish people from all countries would respect the country they're visiting/ living. I may be wrong but I imagine Korea is nothing compared to England and e.g. Spain when it comes towards immigrants.

And BTW. Not all foreigners loooooove K-pop. I don't listen to one lick of it. I actually prefer indie, RnB, AND hip Hop Music. I go to Korea ever hear for the summer because that's festival season. While I haven't had too many bad things happen to me (I have learned not to even go to the clubs) I also am very selective about where I go, and the places I do go are very open minded.

i think that was weirdly edited togther and the bus line cutting didnt had any connection with the racist comment. when he said "racist" i immediately thought of people dragging their eyes to make them look hooded for photos, which happens here...and i guess its fair to say that this is racist. of course there is a racism here, but i think it should be ok for everyone to point out questionable behavior. the kpop comment was infact said they noticed asian foreigner come for kpop but westerners not so much...that is a generalization, which can be flawed of course.
@@EmalineTLO Yeah. I come to Korea enough to know that there is this fetish with K-pop and Kdramas, as well as this fantasy of what Korea is/is not. I think there is this whole "oppa" fantasy that all these girls want to play out, and when they get to Korea they are EXTREMELY let down lol. I personally am very much in love with the culture, and while I have had a bad experience or two with the club scene, I just don't go to the clubs anymore, I don't let it cloud my overall judgement of the times that I do have on Korea. Overall I have been very welcomed in Korea, HOWEVER I do think this is because I have taken the time to learn the language beyond the basics, I treat the people with respect, I have taken the time to learn the customs, and I am a very social person. That on itself I feel has enhance my experience every time I visit. I look forward to my next visit this summer!!
@@justgigi9545 I can only agree to that. I do have the same experiences. Of course I can't like everything here, but I also don't like everything in my home country. So like you said, if I make a bad experience i tend to avoid certain things. As well as you I had very positive reactions and I think mainly also because I am trying to observe and adjust as much as possible while I am living here.

I speak Korean to Koreans I meet for the first time. every Single Time they try to speak English to me so they could “practice their english”, but come on...not every foreigner here is a native english speaker
Preach! Korean is my 4th language and I'm pretty ok at it since I've been studying it for 8 years. I visited Seoul a few months ago and when I tried to talk to them in Korean they always switched to English even though their English was worse than my Korean. It was really weird and disrespectful. Like no matter how good your Korean is, you will never belong and will always be someone they want to practice English with.
I think people do that almost in every country where English isn't the first language. I live in Sweden and I've heard from others that if you start to speak Swedish many swedes will still use English. It's just kind of easier that way.

I’m curious whether the lady in purple’s opinion is the most common one in Korea. I have an advanced level of Korean but people would still talk to me in English because they assume I can’t speak Korean. When I start using Korean, they would still talk to me in English because they wanna practice. I just keep talking in Korean to them 🤣 I didn’t invest my time in learning Korean so you just keep talking in English to me when English is not even my first language 🤣

It didn’t happen to me that much, they mostly spoke korean to me
This only happened to me occasionally at restaurants or shops when I would approach staff in Korean and they would reply in English, but otherwise people just went with whatever language I approached them in. I was even surprised to know a few people I always spoke Korean with actually are completely proficient in English, still they always spoke to me in Korean.

This happens to me too like when I go to cafes and just anywhere in general I'll talk to the staff in 100% Korean and I've been studying rlly hard like ik I'm not bad for sure, but the staff literally get so nervous or smth idek and try to respond in english, but I dont want em to break a sweat like just use Korean

she said she speaks English if she's in the country that use it, or Japanese in Japan but quite many foreigners (especially from ENG speaking countries) think it is natural to speak English in Korean and they just spit it out or sometimes argue in their tongue with people in Korea.

Let me just say, Korea can't say much about foreigners coming into Korea and being what they think is 'racist'
Not many foreigners intend to be racist or rude and nor are they when they have clubs or restaurants where if you're a certain race, you can't get in. I went to Korea last summer with my family and we passed a restaurant where the sign said (in Korean and English) 'No blacks allowed'. This honestly shocked me at how blatant and ignorant Koreans can be. Majority assume that foreigners cannot speak Korean or are rude so they won't let them into certain places. I can speak Korean pretty well and so can my mother so we didn't have any troubles but I feel for you foreigners who face these things simply because of your skin or race.
Side note: I agree that if you're planning to go to Korea for a long time, you should know decent Korean.
Esra Schellingerhout It is wrong. It’s pure discrimination based on a few people who did bad things and didn’t have the right skin color. When some Koreans commit crimes too, they don’t ban all Koreans.
@Esra Schellingerhout That's an assumption, also clubs are really hard to get into as most of them usually only accept rich or good-looking people. There are certain requirements to get into one. WeFancyTv did a video on this, it's pretty interesting.
also, there was a case i think in america someone put a sign no chinese...you dont think they got in A LOT of trouble..its easier to understand when you put yourself in the shoes and flip it around. suddenly based off my skin and not who i am, i am not allowed to use a service

She said to speak a it of Korean. If you go to a foreign country it's useful to learn basic phrases in their language. Especially the polite words, polite requests for food, directions, when shopping etc

The word she used was 흑인 which is the word for any black person. She also said 흑형 and 흑누나 which some people interpret differently. The translation is what mislead. Hope this helps :)

As someone who travels to Itaewon sometimes, usually the African Americans in Itaewon are very confident and defined. That's probably what she meant.
7:08 well, excuse me but this is basically bullshit. english is "just" a language as korean, french, spanish are. people speak english everywhere because it made their way as an "internationaly spoken language". it is taught in every school and is used for example in a lot of international meetings.
so, if someone is coming to korea, then: YES, they will speak english, not because they expect that Koreans know english, but because the chances are higher that someone will understand them rather than speaking in their native language. you can't expect from someone who is coming to Korea for their vacation to speak korean. "hello", "bye" and "thank you" are the basic phrases people learn, so they can be polite.
if we're talking about moving to another country or living there for a long time (i'm talking 6 months and more) then YES, learn the language. because otherwise you can't survive.
when you go "overseas" like you say in 7:13, does that mean you're talking about USA and Japan ? because english and japanese are not the only languages spoken in the world.

It isn't only that but foreigners also don't like to disrespect other languages such as Korean even if it is just trying to order food i mean i can understand Korean but i can't speak it very well and if i were to go and order food or something i'd use a translation app or go with someone who speaks Korean and English because i can't speak Korean well i don't want to sound like i'm butchering their language. What the girl experienced isn't valid enough to be a problem she based it on something that only happened once.
I don't know why they're saying "foreigners" because I get Koreans that do some of these things too. They're in a foreign country but trying to speak their own language to you. I wish the one guy would have elaborated about the "racist things" while it's true that some foreigners will act racist at times, I mostly see the Koreans being racist. I've had friends denied entry into clubs are bars because of their skin color, and that was the reasoning given for not letting them in. It's sad because that wouldn't fly in America, some (NOT ALL) Koreans are outright racist to you. The younger generation are generally better, but even then some are still racist due to media exposure, that's what they're seeing on tv. I speak as much Korean as I can, but I've had some older man yell at me and tell me he doesn't want to hear English and to stop speaking. So I'd very much like to have heard his examples, instead of hearing "they do racist things".
There’s something’s I want to address in this video for one I need Korean people to be understanding. They have to realize Korean is not an easy language to speak even for a native Korean person so please don’t get upset if people can’t speak it correctly or can’t fully speak basic sentences because the pronunciations are very hard especially if you never learned it or just don’t know it. Two y’all have no right to complain about racism because y’all are very much racist towards black people and other Asians . There’s been stories of people getting spat on, people moving away from a black people on public transportation etc etc. You have to be understanding of someone else’s background just as much as they have to be understanding of yours. Korea is are very advanced society but they lack an understanding in the cultural aspect of life.

as an african american who wishes to visit korea, this is very helpful!! i will of course take these opinions into consideration by learning everything about the history/culture before visiting. i would hate to disrespect the country.
I agree with you too, I'm African American too and i wanna go to Korea but i know that not ALL Koreans don't speak English, So I'm gonna learn the language before coming because it IS very disrespectful to get mad at a worker for not speaking English.
I’m not African American, but I’m half European half African and I went there.. never went to itaewon tho cause I don’t go to Korea to see black people.. but is was an amazing experience and they even like you more if you speak korean fluently (that’s what happened with me) but I do wish that you could go cause it was really great.

I am black as well and being in Korea was such a breathe of fresh air that I plan on moving, living and working there within 2 years. It’s an amazing experience and they’re very welcoming, not once did I feel out of place or as someone fascinating to stare at. I felt at peace. They will try to speak English with you when they see you’re a foreigner but I felt so apologetic that I didn’t brush up on my Korean in time to at least be able to hold basic conversations, something I promise myself to do better next time. So that’s the one advice I have, at least know your greetings and traditions, it’s really appreciated and shows an interest in their culture. But you will enjoy your time, it’s a beautiful and inviting country and I can’t wait to go again later this year.

Well the girl in this video said that it would be appreciated if the foreigners know just the basic greetings and phrases of Korean. I think nothing's wrong with it.
The video is about foreigners living in Korea how you're supposed to live there if you don't know the language in first place even if you're visiting for first time knowing some basic phases is not a bad thing and they appreciate it more. And that goes for every country
Compared to other people, i get the opposite where they refuse to speak to me in english because im east asian looking. As a black American person living in SK... Koreans can say and do a lot of racist things since many foreigners don't understand and speak enough Korean to check them back in place. I'll at least give a stank face. They can also have improper behaviors too. For example, everybody AND their mama litters in some areas, like Hongdae. The irony of this is incredible. Lived in Korea for a year and experienced so much racism. I'm white, but anybody who doesn't look Korean will be treated different. Nobody would sit next to me on crowded subways, taxi drivers tried to rip me off, Korean guys thought I was "easy" and had no respect of my personal boundaries. Only had a few Korean friends, otherwise everyone wanted to use me to correct their English essays. Don't get me wrong, in general people in Korea are respectful and it's a very safe country. But they are very ignorant in how they treat foreigners. I can speak and read Korean, didn't make much of a difference.

Black people usually have more than a few bad experiences in Korea I feel like, and if that's true then saying they have swag is just a way to compensate for all the racism against black people, while not realizing that it makes things worse when you generalize people like that.
The whole foreigners don't properly line up and jump in front of ppl is *from my experience* hilarious. Living here I learned nobody really lines up ever. They're not asking you to study the language to fluency. They're saying it would be common manners and decency to eat least know the BASICs, like hello, thank you etc. You are in their country, where their language is Korean. If you want to speak to them, you should want to learn some basics. There are very few countries now-a-days where people don't speak English... I have travelled to many countries, and I always learn at LEAST how to say hello, thank you, sorry, can you help etc... it does not take long. Once most people determine I'm English, they switch to speaking that language anyway.

I think it’d be an interesting experiment to have foreigners that live in Korea and talk Korean to be asked similar questions about Koreans, then have them meet and watch each other’s videos. I think it will create empathy on both sides.
I think it is basic manners to learn a couple of phrases of the language from the country you're travelling to. This way you learned something new and leave a positive impression. I'm not saying you should be fluent, but try to learn a few phrases which could be helpful.

We're usually quiet "tactile", especially if we are of the same sex (like females or males, it's more sensitive when it's male to female, lol) we tend to touch lol so maybe that's why I was cool with it. My family and i traveled to Korea last week for a week. And there are something that i would like to share about.
I'm from Malaysia. The last one , the woman in purple said that at least speak a little korean. But what shocking me was when i was in korea. Some of them speak malay to us and most of them actually can understand english ( in the restaurant or food market ). Some of the koreans who can speak english also tried to help us eventhough we didn't ask for any and I'm grateful with that. But expecting for people to speak a little bit korean in korea is kind of ... I don't know. In malaysia we have a lot of races living there. And who knows about this will know how a lot. But not all races can speak a same language. I even met someone who can't speak any language in my country but she can still communicate a little bit with people ( there is a way ). And in my opinion, people need to educate themselves with english even a little bit because that is most language spoken around the world.
Second, like i said just now, I'm malaysian and I wear a scarf ( i'm a muslim) . One day i went to a toilet in Starbucks with my little sister and she is only seven. The toilet in korea have no pipes and ofc my little sister will struggling with that but she still manage to do it on her own eventhough it kinda slow. The toilet is kinda small and i didn't notice that i blocked the sink. Then there is this korean women who speak korean to me but not nicely ( i hope you know what i mean ) . For me its kinda rude to talk to someone who can't understand korean well like that . I'm a teenager. And eventhough I'm younger than her , she still can't talk to me like that. It is not I can't understand korean totally but I can't understand anything what she said. Then my little sister came out from the toilet and she was like " oh, " .My sister just start to wash her hands but that woman started to get mad again . She scolded us eventhough i already made a sign that i didn't understand her.

i think it is important to learn as many useful phrases as you can when travelling, but it is also important to acknowledge some people are too shy or anxious to actually use what they know in fear of embarrassing themselves. Also, i think foreigners have the assumption that most koreans know some english because it is a taught part of their school curriculum. However, most foreigners have to learn the language independently and when possible outside of a work/ school schedule. I agree many valid points were made though.
Honestly from experience of living in korea for a while.. the foreigners I met and knew that liked kpop/korean culture knew a lot of korean and korean manners. even the tourist that I met that liked kpop knew korean. There are definitely different foreigners going to korea. Some who like kpop and know korean culture and those who don’t know.

i actually don't feel like the language part in the video was wrong. she's not saying you need to be fluent and only speak in korean during your stay, but just to at least learn the basics, you can even download a translator app to help you if you need something on the spot and the person you're talking to can't speak english and you haven't learned the korean for it. as a tourist, you're not expected to know the whole language and it's syntax, so even if it's broken korean, if you know the key word, go for it, no one will blame you for not learning the whole language in a few days.

There is more Koreans in Sydney than Westerners in the whole of Korea. In fact when Im in Korea I expect more people to speak English as I feel like Im still in a Korean Sydney suburb (im the token local). Im ok with taking off my shoes to enter a house as I do that already but keep changing from bathroom slippers to house to kitchen..If I forget Im rude but then i have to listen to someone slurping their soup real loud and be ok with it lol..
Me: uses Korean because that’s the only way I’ll improve
Workers at whatever place I go to: use English because they either want to practice or automatically assume foreigners know zero Korean (when so many do/ want to learn)
Me: automatically starts using English in most places (not because I’m some elitist westerner who doesn’t want to use korean but because everyone uses English with me regardless)
Also, if I had a dollar for every time some Korean person (sober or not) touched my hair without my permission, or for every time some Korean guy in a club environment tried to touch me or invite me to a motel... it’s not just foreign guys (no one should be doing it, but it should be acknowledged that plenty of korean act the way stereotypical foreigners act)

I can understand that not every person in Korea can speak English, especially the elders who works in restaurants and street food, it's the same here in France, they haven't the same school education as us, but asking foreign people to at least speak Korean is a bit too much.. Yeah learn a bit is a thing, but personally, I'm trying to speak Korean with Korean friends I'm confortable with, to be sure they won't criticize my accent or the mistakes I could make, as a shy person, speaking in a language I'm not confortable with to people I don't know and having the attention on me in a foreign country is really stressful... So I can understand both opinions, that elders aren't confortable with English and foreign people that aren't with Korean... Learn another language can be difficult, so when you used to learn English since child at school, it's really the easier way while visiting a country...
