  • Chris takes a really bad sounding chanter reed and turns it into a really good sounding chanter reed. The reed starts out very hard to blow with an awful pitch. Chris fixes each note and softens the reed by a good 10 inches of water. #bagpipes

I learned a lot from that. When I started playing 26 years ago, I think I was paying about $10 or $12 for a reed. I went through quite a few. If only I had known! Thanks!

So, it looks like a reed can take a good bit of manipulation to be made right, I'm glad I kept all my old ones, I may be able to salvage some of them.

That's great Michael. Using reeds that you would otherwise discard is the best way to go. Cheers.

Very informative! might give it a shot on some older reeds. One question though, why are you syncing to the Piobaireachd HG?

      Hello Kris,
If the piobaireachd high G is unstable it won't be suitable for piobaireachd playing for obvious reasons.

Loving your videos. When I was a teenage player my father an ex-army piper and later pipe major did all my reed adjustments for me. Now I''m in retirement with a 30 gap in playing the pipes I am back into playing and realising that my lack of reed adjustment knowledge is holding me back, partly fear of ruining a reed but also a lack of confidence in how much to take off, where, when and how. Your videos are definitely helping with this. I had a question for you, my pipes are my grandfathers Henry Starck's from the 1920's and the chanter tunes to 466 Hz (which I like) should I use modern reeds that are for chanters which tune (much) higher or should I try reeds that are made for Bb chanters?

I'm glad you're finding the videos useful.
Modern reeds will work just fine.
