Girlll, I did it back in December of last year! I cut off 25’ of hair. I know, it’s a crying shame, but it got so damaged from flat ironing. I heard different hair products can damage your hair as well. So we need to stop using sooo many products on our hair because we’re curious to try them and it’s ‘natural’ and black owned. Maybe this is just a lesson learned for all of us 🤷🏾‍♀️

this the fourth CZcamsr and I've discovered its the new trends like the BGC haircare regime (over cleansing and not enough moisturizing, TOO MUCH HEAT there's no such thing as indirect heat), curly cuts, overmanipulation etc. I even had to cut a lot more of my ends. I'm going back to the basics for 2024. Grease, hair oils and twists for low manipulation. It worked years ago why switch it up. My scalp and my hair has been healthier, shiner and have been thanking me.

As a person who's been suffering from SB since 17 (I'm now 32), I have some advice for you. Oils are not our friends. Unfortunately, it exacerbates our and I had to learn this the hard way. Second, keep 3-4 medicated shampoos in rotation. Unfortunately, our scalp gets used to any medicated shampoo you use for too long and it stops working. I have 3 shampoos into rotation (including the one that was prescribed for me). Third, you'll get a flare up every time the season changes. Where I am from, it's currently 91 degrees and the heat causes my flare ups to be worse. Lastly, get a salicylic acid hair spray, like the one from the sulfur brand. It's the only thing that keeps my flare ups and scratching in check. Sometimes I would scratch my scalp until it bleeds. This really helps the itching and it keeps your scalp flake free; P.S. it's best to saturate your scalp with the medicated shampoo first and let it sit for 5-10 mins so it can help soften the build up on the scalp so you can easily shampoo them away when you get into the shower. Hope this helps!! 🙂

All of us can’t handle oil on our scalps btw. Due to our methods of hair care and the over assumption that our hair innately dry, oiling our scalps is very common.
I can say when I was young and natural, my mother greased my scalp and it didn’t find it uncomfortable, but she also only washed my hair maybe 1-2/monthly. When I was relaxed, I still rarely wet my hair and oiling was very helpful.
However when I went natural and washed my hair daily, oiling was no longer feasible, and even irritating. So of course I experimented in going a week without adding oil, just to find out…I now had a naturally oily scalp without relaxers. Which I found so intriguing because it simply doesn’t look the same on non-textured or less dense hair. There’s no weigh-down whatsoever, it never ‘looked’ oily-which is why most non-textured people wash their oily hair, it practically looks wet and feels very greasy.
It still wasn’t making its way down my hair shaft of course, but in learning my hair, I also found that it didn’t need to. My hair simply wasn’t as dry as I was made to believe growing up and getting into natural hair as an adult. I basically just needed washing and conditioning on a regular basis, which I never would’ve discovered with relaxed hair.
I had heard here and there that non-textured people were suggesting that oily scalp people wash their hair less often, and their oil production will adjust naturally. For some, that advice worked and for others it didn’t matter, they were still oily. I didn’t think for one second that could also apply to type 4 hair, but after my experience I’ve become very curious. I’d really like to see some research on how water exposure affects/correlates with scalp sebum production.

    • @BrittanyMia
      @BrittanyMia  Před 2 měsíci +7

I remember you commenting a while back stating that you swim a lot and need to shampoo your hair to get the lakewater out of your hair every day in the summer, and that shifted my perspective because you appear to have a lot of healthy hair.
I’m learning that my scalp doesn’t love to be oiled at all, and the only oil that I use now is the medicated oil that was prescribed to me. Even pre-pooping with oil is too much, especially putting oil on a dirty scalp. However, my dermatologist encouraged me to try and prepoo with the medicated oil. Its intended use is to sit on the scalp overnight, or at least for four hours on damp hair and scalp in order for it to do its thing. That correlates perfectly with pre-pooping so I’m going to definitely give that a try. When it was prescribed to me, I used it morning and night two times a day for two weeks while I had my flat twists, and that did the trick as well.
My hair is dry, but it’s not as dry as it was when I was shampooing my hair two times in a row for these past couple years. I got used to it and thought that that’s how it was supposed to be, but my hair never needed to feel squeaky clean after a shampoo before and it was thriving, simply shampooing one time .I never needed to have squeaky clean hair until I started learning that we should be shampooing our hair two times. I learned that from watching other people on CZcams who were doing the BCG method and I subconsciously integrated it into my routine which really dried out my hair strands. I think it’s useful to cleanse the hair two times when it needs it, but my hair couldn’t handle it even though I was using a lot of product to style it at the time. So my assumption that prepooing would keep my hair strands more moisturized because I was adding more product on the product that was already there was actually just irritating my scalp even more. I only use one to two products my to style my hair now - a leave-in conditioner, and a heat protectant (maybe) - and because of that I only need to shampoo one time and focus it on my scalp. Our hair might be the weakest and driest type out of the bunch, but it’s a lot more manageable than we (me 🙋🏾‍♀️) make it out to be.
I’d also love to see that research. Since our scalp is skin and needs to be cleaned as such, It makes sense that it would be more balanced with more frequent cleansing. And when I say cleansing, I don’t necessarily mean shampoo, as you mentioned just water can do a lot for our scalp. Water wash and condition every day and only shampooing 1x once a week for the past month my scalp has not had a flareup since before I big chopped. I appreciate you sharing your insight.

I’ve always shampooed twice because my mom and salon stylists always did with my natural and relaxed hair growing up. But it always two different products, first clarifying shampoo then moisturizing shampoo. Then a conditioner. That always gave me the most balance and it still does for shampooing. Now I only double clarify if I’m afraid I’ve got anything mysterious in my hair or if I’m doing henna, because I don’t want anything trapped in my hair.
I totally get it. I did hot oil treatments monthly on my relaxed hair, I’ve maybe done 3 on my natural hair. The only prepoos I still use are the goopy ones like African pride, or herbal ACV diluted with tea and water. There’s hard water where I’m at and this has really been helping plus it’s always great for rebalancing my scalp. I do it 1-2/month. It’s not really recommended by doctors but it is in holistic care for SD. From what I’ve read, it wouldn’t make it worse, but there’s also no guarantee it would help depending on what actually causes the SD.
And I agree, my hair is way more manageable than I grew up believing. And I’m at the point where I don’t struggle with kinkier/tighter coiled textures either, so I admit I have a healthy amount of skepticism for those conversations. There’s too much out there now.
Yes for a lot of us our scalp just loves water and I’m glad cuz I love pools, lakes and beaches 🥰

I’m sorry that damage forced you into a big chop as opposed to it being purely a styling option, but I’m also glad that you’re starting anew. Again, you look really amazing with your hair as is and I can’t wait to see discover new ways to have fun with your hair.

Thank you! I have many head wraps and I love it as an aesthetic choice sometimes but I used to wear them all the time in college so I’m a little burnt out and only use them when I want to cover my hair.
The damage was a blessing in disguise because I had to decide what I actually wanted from my hair, and pay better attention to my scalp health. At the end of the day, if my hair wasn’t damaged I probably would have tried to grow it out in a bunch of protective styles. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just not something that I wanted to do or even enjoy doing. I’m glad this made me sit down and think back to what it was that I was doing this for, and it’s simply to see my curls thrive and for a healthy scalp and head of hair. I’m excited to continue to share my journey! 💗

The most moisturising shampoo I have is the Creme of Nature Argan Oil From Morrocco Sulfate-Free Moisture & Shine Shampoo. I only use a sulfate clarifying and chelating shampoo once every 4-6 weeks. I follow the regimen recommended by my trichologists: 1. Shampoo once a week 2. Use Deep conditioner with a plastic cap and hot towel for 20 minutes 3. Apply leave in detangler and leave in conditioner and steam with a plastic cap and hot towel for 20 ninutes Daily. 4. No stylers, no grease, raw oils or raw butters and keep my ends tucked in. When I do this, I never have dry hair... When I fall off or decide to use some gel... Yup dry hair. I either moisture train my hair or.... Wear styles that facilitate dryness and then complain about dryness. Lol! My hair's moisture cycle is 24 hours.... If I don't add some leave in moisture... By then..at 25 hours dryness and splits! 😅😂🤣🙈. My hair is set up like a clock and a calender. Every winter I lose/shed hair. Every 4-6 weeks my hair needs clarifying, chelating and Aphogee 2 step. Every 25 hour my hair is looking to dry out and split (break and leave my head for sure lol!) some stylists are telling people with dry hair 2 shampoo twice a week with a clarifying shampoo.. Am no Ma'am/Sir.. It could never be me. Some stylists are telling people to skip deep conditioner and leave in conditioner. Nope never me again. As for gels.... I've known since the 90s, that gels dry out and break off hair...whether relaxed or natural, that's why I always ran from edge control. Glad i did cause I'm in my 40s with all my hair line follicles still alive. If your hair is dry... Apply water/aka moisture aka a moisture based product. It could be jheri curl juice, As I Am Castor water, curl refresher spray or a leave in conditioner cream/lotion..but do something. If you have dry face, hands or feet, you don't give up soap, you find a moisturing cleanser and moisturise after you cleanse.. With face and feet twice a day. With hands, we apply gand cream every time after we wash our hands that could be as much as 12 times a day but we do it. But somehow we think we can go days, weeks months without applying moisture/water to our scalp and hair. Meanwhile our ancestors were swimming in the river water everyday in Africa.

Hey. So glad to see you back. The cut looks really good and I'm excited to see your journey. I get where you're coming from with the twists. I keep my hair in twists in the winter and I do wash and goes in the summer. I used to just wear wash and goes and has no issue. I just made sure I got my trims every 3 months. At that time bond builders were not a thing. Good luck!!!!!

I really don't understand how that message was lost in recent times. Then again I see my trichologists and stylist regularly so maybe it was a new thing that I was unaware of. Back in my day they said TV will rot your brain if you watch enough crap... Now it's the same for the internet. I think before my time this is why they banned so many books. Lol!

I stopped wash n gos, not entirely but I did them less frequently until I now no longer do them since 2021. I'm using less products as well and my pockets thanks me too. It’s sad that all the ladies who were going to these curly cut stylist and following their advice have now had to big chop.
I saw Rosie Amelia mentioned Epres bond repair in her recent video. She had to big chop from following BGC method. It’s interesting you mention about curly cuts not addressing health needs of the hair because Shelly and Rosie got dragged for saying this a year ago when they found damage.
It’s sad you had to cut your hair because from what I can remember you were on a hair growth journey , It saddens me so many women were misled.

February of this year I decided to take care of my hair. I took my wig off and immediately started my natural hair journey. I also started working out, again. I started watching your videos and doing my wash and gos. I went through your entire wash and go playlist and I lovedddd them.
Things I quickly learned while watching your videos and doing my w&g’s:
    1. Stretching my hair (blowing it out) and checking my ends for a little dusting AND getting a trim quarterly will help keep my ends healthy (something I was never doing in previous years).
    2. Protein treatments (I’m low porosity but this is still NEEDED, no question)
    3. I realized co-washing is only going to work ONE good time during the week if at all, as my hair tends to get need an actual shampoo. 😮‍💨🥹 my stylers just don’t work as well if I don’t shampoo.
    4. Instead of clarifying once a week, maybe just a moisturizing shampoo is all that’s needed but I will pay attention to what my hair needs.
    5. Seems like deep conditioning masks really help me weekly considering that I’m doing these weekly w&g’s
    6. Using products that not only work, but also have close to clean ingredients has been my priority. I’ve done through so many products and wow, 😑 some of the biggest names have given me amazing results but caused allergies and that was shocking to me. ✨✨
I appreciate all the hard work and labor (of love) that you’ve put into these videos and trying out combos for us to try as well.

I could never do the multiple styling products. Or the 10 hour wash days with multiple treatments. I always wanted, simple, easy and cheap hair. Unfortunately my haircare is none of those things so I keep the styling as simple and cheap as possible. My trichologists helped me. They literally told ne i only need shampoo, deep conditoner, leave in detangler, leave in conditioner and a water based scalp mist. Meanwhile brands be trying to get us to use 50-11 products a week. 😅😂🤣🙈 I top up my hair strength once a month to protein and Olaplex, the rest of the time i just mostly use what my trichologists said to use. I think i used edge control once last month. 😅

I started using medicated shampoo last week. I’m on my second use, and I can’t say that it’s doing much. My regular shampoo made my scalp feel better than the medicated shampoo honestly. But I know I have to use it consistently to see a difference. My scalp was much better after the antibiotics and the medicated oil. I asked her for the shampoo in my Follow-up just to test it out and it’s a little drying to my hair, so it may have to be put on the back burner since it’s not necessary for me.

I’ve switched to using the medicated shampoo once a month and on my other wash days I use a shampoo that gets my scalp clean and then I supplement with using a scalp serum with pyrithione zinc once a week. I’m almost a year into this change and it’s working for me.

I don’t care for twists as well. I feel like it’s a “homely look” except for mini twists are nice but my hair knots up the smaller I do them. But when I do twists I do only 8 twists. I won’t do no more than 12 twists. My hair thrives the best in a wash and go and I retain more length but the natural community will convince you the answer is twists. Everyone isn’t into the same styles. You can definitely grow your hair out in a wash and go despite what people say.

    • @marleyhill34
      @marleyhill34 Před 2 měsíci +1

Always do what's best for your hair...and scalp! regardless of what the natural hair community says. I've been natural 15 years and I stopped going to black salons! I started to get a more honest assessment of my hair from Aveda salons and their non-black stylists. I have black trichologists who I went to with scalp issues and they also helped my hair. My hair and scalp prefers flat twists over twists or braids. It's less tight that braids and my ends are mostly tucked away and it stays neater unlike twists for me. My hair is ultra-fine and the twists always unravel and tangle by day 3 or 4.
I've seen a lot of trends that damaged people hair and scalp in those 15 years. I watch a few cosmetologists, cosmetic chemists and trichologists on youtube and they do not jump on every trend. They look at their client experience and their technical knowledge from training and they do not treat every clients hair and scalp the same! Few advocate wash and gos as year round styling for type 4 hair.

It's a common thing on and off CZcams... If our hair can withstand it is another thing. I keep my trichologist products, Cantu, Aphogee, Olaplex and a protein-free deep conditioner always in my rotation but I'll try other products especially leave ins. I don't play around too much with my shampoos, pre-poos, scalp products or deep conditioners.
