    📼Video Summary:
The Poppin' Pals toy is a kids toy that's common here in the United States. There are several variations of made by different brands - the one in this video is from playskool. There 5 different ways to open the doors - there's a slider, switch, button, turn key, and another switch. The doors open by a torsion spring. A small lever normally holds each door but. Each of the five mechanisms press down the lever which allows the door to open. If the squeaker gets annoying you can actually remove it and the toy will work just fine. This toy is fun to take apart but can be difficult to put back together!

I think frequently about the fact that for almost every product created, there's at least one person who had to think about the design.
I bet the people that made this toy would be happy to know that their work doesn't go unappreciated, even if it's just a kids toy.

And not only that: designers have to also consider whether or not the piece they need can even be fabricated and, if so, how. I studied Industrial Design for 6 years an many times it felt like a nightmare. I go back to those times whenever I'm transforming one of the modern Transformers/Beast Wars and see how INSANELY complex those things are. Those designers must have gone through hell on Earth figuring out how to make those things. Probably caused a few break-ups, lol.

While this is VERY boring for adults, there is a phase in human development, where you just realize clear patterns of cause and effect ACTIVELY. This can more rapidly be done, by having a predictable fast mechanism to be triggered repeatedly, without annoying too many people.
Or the child just keeps using the light switch of the room.

I watched anyway because I love how you explain things and fully enjoy watching your animations, but I already figured out how these toys work thanks to my older nephew.
When he was a toddler, he had a toy very similar to this one but two of the doors wouldn't pop up all of a sudden and no one could figure out why, so (after my sister bought a new one for him), I took it apart and found a bunch of raisins under the two levers of the doors that wouldn't open. When she asked him about it, he told her that he didn't want the animals to get hungry, so he would put the raisins on the platforms while the doors were open, then would push the doors closed, which of course dropped the raising to the bottom of the toy's interior where they accumulated under the two levers.
Thanks for helping me remember that, thinking about it while I typed it out made me smile.

That's genuine, not sarcastic, btw. It speaks a lot to the engineering mindset to give the same curiosity and care to things that are self-evidently complex and things that are easy to write off and see as simple. I think a lot of people, myself included, get an ego about such things that make it difficult to see ingeniously simple solutions.

My kids jammed some other toys into the mechanism
I needed to open it up to remove the other toys and I couldn’t figure out how to put it back together after all the pieces fell out of place.
This video was a life saver

Thank you for this video :) You just saved me a whole lot of toddler meltdowns as I needed to take the toy apart and had no idea how complex it was on the inside!

I am once again extremely fascinated with the engineering of what seems to be simple kids toys! Who would've thought of this to teach kids how to use real life switches and things. Awesome animation and explanation as always man!! Keep it up, and looking forward to more :D
