    Toys is an area I fail in again and again. There's a part of me that relives my childhood through my kids and I forget they are their own people and truly don't need any of it. Thanks for the motivation to declutter again!

    My youngest just turned 11 and is about out of the toy phase, but these are really good tips I wish I knew years ago! Since starting more simple living, my daughter's favorite pastime is to declutter 😂 sometimes, I think I go a little too far, but I do think she sees how much better she feels without a ton of stuff and that's all worth it!

    I love your minimalism videos! I’m new to minimalism, and I’ve already decluttered my wardrobe and home. It feels so freeing! I definitely don’t miss anything I’ve donated, but it does feel weird going from tons of “stuff” to only what I NEED. I love the fact that I can walk into my closet and pick out an outfit within seconds versus before, it would take me 15-20 minutes to decide what to wear!
    Love your channel & all the minimalist videos! Keep it up 💜

    We traveled around the world for over a year with our then two year old who turned three during our trip. She only had a little play dough and two stuffed animals during the entire year. She used her imagination to play. When we got back home she didn't have any toys, so I did what any parent would do, I bought her new toys! She played with her toys for a few days but then she stopped playing with them. In one month she will be turning 5 and she still prefer playing through her imagination rather than with toys!

    Great video! As a homeschooling mama to 7 (who most would probably consider a minimalist...except for books...but we have a whole office that is just the library, so it works!😂), I totally agree with you!💛 As our kids have gotten older, we have allowed them to have their own toys (from bdays, etc) in their room, but we still have a simplistic stash of shared toys that are out of sight (for mamas sanity), like Duplos, Matchbox cars, Magnatiles...they are all open ended and timeless. I love to read and have had Simplicity Parenting for years, but have not started it until now! Thanks for the motivation! I do think you would enjoy Balanced and Barefoot or Last Child In the Woods. Maybe even The Read Aloud Family...so many good books out there! I hope your library has them!💛

      I strongly remember reading Last Child in the Woods in my college English class back in ‘06. My teacher was a minimalist and big inspiration. What a great read that helps everyone grow. It was tapping into something profound that now is easily talked about everywhere.

  • @BachelorBabes
    @BachelorBabes Před 2 lety +4

    The CALM and confidence you have when Tenny grabs the camera is the energy I pray for everyday 😂🙏
    Not gonna lie, some of my favorite childhood memories DO involve toys. But mostly as a shared experience with my brother. We used to re-enact action scenes with our Star Wars toys, create dramatic town hall meetings with our Beanie Baby collection, launch Stomp Rockets with messages inside in our backyard, and play video games for hours on end. That being said, it clearly wasn’t the toy itself, the toy was just a vessel for our imaginations. And where are all those toys today? Probably in my mom’s attic somewhere. I like what you said about not having toys on vacation because that proves the point that a kid can find playtime with anything, really.
    I know you kind of briefly touched on it at the end of the video, but do you ever have a situation where one of the kids resists you downsizing their wardrobe or toy collection? Like you know for a fact they don’t wear it or play with it and yet they still want to keep it on the shelf? How would you navigate something like that?
    Love you always Maf! Congrats on the channel growth. Look at all your fans!!!

    • @MadisunGray
      @MadisunGray  Před 2 lety

      Lol not calm everyday or everytime but thank you 😂❤️ Also yes! Love your point about toys as you and your brother got older and had shared experiences that you really cherished using (what sounds like) pretty open ended toys that you could create scenes and characters with. Our kids love open ended toys like that and I can totally see our kids getting into that kinda thing more as they get older. I guess the point I didn't address was that every season of life and childhood is different and so is every family. What you love and get value from, I might not and vice versa. That said, minimalism is not about getting rid of stuff you actually like and use! I think that's a problem with minimalism, a lot of times I think people get the impression that it's supposed to be extreme, but really it's just about clearing away the excess.
      To your point about decluttering kids' stuff: Our kids just aren't old enough to care at this point I don't think but in general I would say never to get rid of someone else's things. I do see mallory decluttering her stuff as pretend play every now and then which is hilarious. Also I think the reason we hold on to things we don't actually use or need is emotional. When we can address the underlying emotions attached to the thing, usually we then can let go or take action in some productive way, rather than just hoard everything... which doesn't feel good either.
      Thanks for the good questions! I love them. Keep it coming. ❤️

    Toys can be so tricky for me. I am definitely a minimalist and have decluttered so so much in the past 2 years, but I also love beautiful toys. I love what you said about society's perspective on how having children must somehow be a burden, especially when it comes to mothers being overwhelmed with living rooms full of toys. I think that we can definitely set a boundary for ourselves as parents in making sure our home is just as comfortable, relaxing, and fun for us just as much as our children! I definitely have a toy aesthetic and just decluttered or returned several of the things family members got my child for Christmas 😬 I would love to know how you handle the influx of toys when it comes to family members gifting your kids things for holidays and birthdays. I make a list, but some people don't like sticking to it! 😆 I am currently very pleased with our toy set up in our living room as everything gets played with and looks beautiful. I also wanted to know if you do a toy rotation?

    • @MadisunGray
      @MadisunGray  Před 2 lety +2

      I don’t rotate, usually if they stop playing with it, I will donate it. Rarely have I had to re-buy anything. They do SO much better with less! 🤍

    I love this video! So inspiring, you make it look easy 😊 I find it relatively easy to get rid of my own things, but so hard with the kids! I’m often secretly happy if something gets broken beyond repair because then the decision is made! My family is full of woeful stories of parents getting rid of things, breaking their child’s heart and having it held against them forever, and I live in terror of being that parent! We end up with piles of ‘non toys’, crafts and toys they’ve made, and everything is deemed precious and clung on to. We haven’t figured it out yet, but in the meantime I’ll just have to enjoy your clear spaces instead of mine 😅🌱

    Hey :) new here ❤was looking through your videos, can’t wait to watch more. Do you only have a shelf for toys in your living room for your children as their toy boundary, or do you have other spaces in your home too? We have decluttered toys and decluttered them. But I feel like we still have an INSANE amount throughout the house. Trying to figure out what a good boundary is. How much total to keep

      That's a good question, I try to go for things that are beautiful, simple and natural and from there just kind think of all the toys as trial and error and don't take it all too seriously. If something's not getting played with, it goes in the bag in my closet to see if it's missed. :) I'm always challenging myself to keep it as minimal as possible because our kids just thrive with fewer toys and more open/outdoor time. Hope that helps.

    I know this is an old video. We have massively pared back our sons toy collection and he hasn't even noticed. There are still a number of toys that I have had out the last three weeks he hasn't played with including a whole box of wooden blocks. He plays with duplo and lego everyday for ages. I feel like donating the wooden blocks will be such a bad idea even though he never uses them. Kids toys are such a hard category to minimize.
