    If you ever get into later eras of Indian characters plsss cover Connie from Steven Universe. She was the first character I ever really saw myself in. I’m a biracial Indian American so I didn’t really see myself in white characters, but I feel very American so I couldn’t see myself in stereotypical Indian characters either. Connie was a sword fighting Indian American that I was for Halloween several times. Rebecca sugar always nails the representation and I am sooo thankful for this one, she’s perfect

      I love how she wasn’t just the ‘best friend’ character but also developed (and was heavily hinted at throughout the series) as the ‘main love interest’.
      Steven Universe being one of the few cartoon shows that has a POC love interest for the Main Character, who STAYED the Main Love Interest. As the ‘90s and ‘00s loved to use the ‘Disposable Black Girlfriend’ trope (which can apply to any girl of color), so I was so glad that POC characters being the main leads or love interest were getting more rep in the ‘10s.

Black characters like the Pizza family (and black-coded characters like Garnet) also have their lips drawn a certain way to match the real life racial feature, which Connie does not have, so I think it's pretty easy to tell she isn't black if you're paying it some more attention.

    So, fun fact for anyone who doesn't know: Johnny Bravo Goes to Bollywood was made originally as an 11 minute short directly for Cartoon Network India in 2009. It aired in Hindi and wasn't dubbed for international audiences. It was lengthened to the movie length and aired internationally in 2011.
    Both were created long after the series had ended. I'm guessing Johnny Bravo was just so popular in India that they decided to make a short for the fans there? And I guess the short was so popular they made it a full length film and brought it back to the states/other countries??
    It's an interesting part of Cartoon Network history!

    Other folks have suggested Connie Maheswaran from SU, but I’d also like to give a shoutout to her mom, Priyanka. She starts out as a strict mother with high expectations, but she loves and wants the best for her daughter. And I always appreciated how, in nightmare hospital (she’s a doctor), she didn’t care that the fusion experiments looked “strange” or “monstrous.” She recognized that they were people in pain who needed help, and she was right, even if they weren’t human or “normal”. Her levelheadedness and compassion really shone in that episode
    And the show gives her and Connie development so they can better communicate and have more trust in each other!

Honorable mentions: Noah from TDI is apparently Indian? I didn't even know that, I thought he was white. I actually was quite unsure about a lot of the characters in TDI. Noah was supposed to be the nerd character but he isn't really like Baljeet or Ravi, he's more of the sarcastic know-it-all. okay I understand how the Irish coach attempting to comfort her can seem kind of ridiculous without context, but Bend It Like Beckam was made in 2002, and the coach's comment was made in context of the Irish Troubles-- an Irish person growing up in England anywhere in the 1900s would have likely faced discrimination, maybe especially if someone was growing up in the 1960s-1990s.
    Something horribly funny from my own family: I have an uncle Paddy-- and calling someone a paddy is a common slur for Irish ppl. Said uncle got into a bar fight over someone calling him his name in the wrong tone lol.

  • @CreoTan
    @CreoTan Před 2 měsíci +35

    I know victorious is a very controversial show and can be really hard to watch, but it is kinda nice that the Token Hot Guy of the show was half Indian. Beck was generally written to be a pretty laidback and chill guy who has some really sweet friendship moments with the other guys in the show. But man. Did they drop the ball with him when it comes to women.
    Beck is a character who is so used to women throwing themselves at him that he’s apathetic and passive towards it, to the point where it makes his girlfriend insanely insecure and jealous. Man kissed another girl in episode 1 in front of his girlfriend while they were doing an improv scene in class; yes, it was Tori’s idea, but Beck went along with it. Plus, the writers seemed to think it was really funny to 1) make Beck and Jade a toxic, miserable couple and 2) make Beck more of a player as the show went on, to the point where it seemed like he expected for all women to want him
    But, hey, he wasn’t ever the stereotypical nerd or dork and instead he was known for how attractive and smooth he was. Victorious is one of those shows where I just wanna rescue the characters from it and scrape the awful crud off of em

    As a weeb, I read Black Butler in middle school and they had an Indian prince character named Soma and his best friend-slash-servant Agni (also known as “the right hand of God” which was a sick as hell moniker). The manga takes place in Victorian England and begins much more goofy and light hearted and the writing becomes more grounded and complex as it goes along. I never watched the anime and didn’t finish the manga, but I do remember Agni and Soma being fan favorites. Their introduction arc showed that the author did do a level of research, but it was a Japanese woman writing Indian characters in a manga set in Britain, so I can’t speak to how accurate anything was.
    The whole manga also has a distinct flavor of 2000s anime cheese that definitely isn’t for everyone and a lot of the manga’s earlier chapters haven’t aged as well, though the author has made strides to correct her earlier mistakes

    • @vs6584
      @vs6584 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Interesting. Soma sounds like he is based on the real life The Black Prince, Punjab's last Maharaja Duleep Singh, who was basically kidnapped by the British, separated from his mother, the Maharani, because she was a threat to them, and brought to Queen Victoria's court in England. Queen Victoria and her Prince Consort were said to have been very fond of the young prince and pampered him, but it was still one of The Raj's many, many cruelties. Look him up, he's a very interesting historical figure who lived an incredible life.

He’s the main character, Indian (a lot of people think he’s Mexican) the show is actually an American adult web series, but all the jokes relating to Max’s ethnicity actually made me laugh (as an Indian)

    Stories of long ended series getting reboots for the countries that adored them always warms my heart. Whether it be Johnny Bravo for India, Voltes V for the Philippines, or Top Cat for Mexico. Before I transitioned I cosplayed as Captain Harlock and a French woman recognized it while referring to me excitedly as Albator (Harlock's name and the titular series in France)
    Fantastic video btw!💖

    Thank you for the shoutout! It was so kind. ❤I'm so glad you loved Johnny Bravo Goes to Bollywood!! 😄 Hadji was kind of ahead of his time as well, despite the snake charmer-fication. You should check out the rebooted version of the show, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest that came out in the mid 90s. Not only did the show SLAP but Hadji became a stud.

    I’d love to see you so a review of some of the Indian/south Asian rep in avatar the last airbender/the legend of Korea (the cartoon and possibly the live action series (not the movie we hate the movie, though it might make a good video to point out the racism problem in that)) as I’m so curious if they did it well, considering the whole meshing of cultures thing that’s such a stereotype. Some other characters I can think of off the top of my head that might make a good vid too are prismo from Adventure Time (though it’s not really focused on in his character and more that the VAs happened to be South Asian), Matthew Patel from Scott Pilgrim vs the world and Amerie from Heartbreak High (another Aussie show with surprisingly good Aboriginal rep) 10:12 also yikes I never remembered the Imperial flag of Japan being in the Sally Bollywood show. Also um maybe avoid using mental health terms like “psychotic” to describe morally bankrupt characters as it stigmatises people with psychosis and ASPD

    You are on a roll... THANK YOU for mentioning one of my favorite movies Bend it like Beckham.... I was actually confused regarding the scene you mentioned regarding the slur.... Fortunately I had a few clients from South Asia that gave me insight to the ways of the culture.... Asking questions is how you learn..... As for Beauty or aesthetics of the South Asian individuals, is not worth debating due to Miss India makes the top 10 every year of the Miss Universe Pageant...... This year they had a representative from Pakistan for the first time in many years.... That speaks for itself..... Speaking of pageants another movie that I enjoyed for the honest REALISTIC portrayal of South Asian culture was .......Miss India America ...... It was funny while also showing a cutthroat side of the South Asian culture....... I am sure you have seen it..... Keep up the good work ...

      I mentioned it in my stand-alone comment but it's probably because it was made originally as an 11 minute short directly for Cartoon Network India! It aired only there and did not have any dubs/international releases. It was lengthened to the film in 2011 and that version aired internationally.
      My guess is that an Indian studio helped produce at least the short film. An interesting part of CN history!

    Edit: now I have finished the video, I still love your makeup! And I am subscribing and lowkey going to watch all your other videos too. The aqua colored dress that Aqua wore in cheetah girls three is everything I wished that Naomi Scott would wear in Aladdin yet somehow they absolutely didn't deliver. And my childhood brain was very wise in the fact that it removed any memories of romantic nonsense between anyone other than Aqua and prince who for some reason does tech support on the side... It is the only cheetah girls movie I refuse to rewatch to this day because ot wasn't even that fun in my memories. And you are correct Raven Simone owns our 2000's souls.

    Good to see Sally Bollywood get the stamp of approval, I honestly thought that show would fare a lot worse considering the voice cast and how out there the show itself occasionally was. I guess I'd sum it up as a show that uses Indian culture and dress the way many Sherlock Holmes adaptations/references use British culture and dress, so as long as Indian people are cool with it, I guess there's nothing more to complain about.

    The Cheetah Girls movie deserves Vivek Ramaswamy tier solely because of the fact that they casted a non-Indian man to play an Indian love interest. And they made him seem way better than the other two who were ACTUALLY INDIAN. Idk it screams racist to me that they don't wanna cast an Indian man as the heartthrob character.

    I hated the Cheetah Girls go to India movie as a kid. They couldn’t do even the most basic of basic research for it. They just wanted to push the main girl rather than have any of it make sense for the location they’re in. A good singer would NEVER have gotten the main acting role over the superior actor and dancer. Almost every actor, if not all actors, in Indian movies are dubbed over by a singer.
    Most portrayals of Indians in childhood media were absolutely garbage. It’s nice to see some validation in regards to how bad they were. It’s funny when my favorite animated Indian character from a western show is Camp Camp. We need more of that.

    "The Elephant Princess". For many years I thought I had dream this show, I had very vague memories. Watching your videos made me search for it again, through the years I had try and failed. With the few characteristics I remembered I searched on Google "2000s kids show about an Indian girl that magically traveled, there's also an elephant". Nothing. I finally look up (in spanish) shows about India from the 2000s that aired in latinoamerica and found it. It's an Australian show and I discovered why the description in English wasn't getting me anywhere. The protagonist it's an Australian girl. "The show revolves around a suburban Australian teenager, who discovers she is the heiress to the throne of Manjipoor, a fictional Indian kingdom". I can't speak on its quality, but I thought it was worth sharing it with you.
