Time for a 1uzFE swap! 300hp all aluminum DOHC v8 from a lexus LS400. Theyre cheap as hell, reliable as hell, and great for some decent power.

One of my coworkers bought an 04 Tacoma that looked very much like this. It is a red S-Runner Tacoma but had the 3.4 with factory supercharger, 5 speed stick and 22,000 miles. The dealer just got it in, didn't know what they had and sold it to him for $11,000. I am still envious. It's not the fastest thing out there but my god, what a steal. Wow, that is a real odd bird in the world of Tacomas. S-runner wheels (rare), S-Runner body colored trim, stepside (also rare), all the interior amenities and a 2rz instead of a 3rz or 3.4. And no, those limited badges are not factory (I mean they are toyota badges, just not for that truck). A 3.4, 5 speed and a TRD (err Magnuson) supercharger would wake it up, maybe even a 1UZ. Good luck with it, they last pretty much forever. I have had two of that bodystyle tacoma and currently have an X-Runner (and a little collection of 80s toyota trucks).

In Australia we still called these a Hilux and the diff was really popular because they were so readily available, cheap, and strong.
I think the latest Tacoma is different as our Hilux is still a similar size to the original.
In auto they were hideously slow. The manual was slightly more sprightly but they were built for efficiency.
The good news is, you can fit an SBC under the bonnet.

Congrats Tom. At 74k miles, that thing is just getting broken in. I had an old 84 Toyota truck back in the early 90's. I chopped the top, and made it a Hard top vert, installed Supra seats, carpeted bed, Rockford Fosgate Sound system, lowered it, ground effects, ala mini-trucking days. I laugh now at the old pics.

I purchased a new Ford Ranger extended cab in 02, 4x2, 5 spd trans, 3 ltr v6, it had a posi rearend, (I live in western NC, on a mile long, very hilly, gravel driveway, and posi SUCKS when it snows!!!). I owned a small business that I basically ran out of this truck. I LOVED that truck!!! My wife has horses which require sawdust for bedding so she took MY truck and trailer to get a load of sawdust, she promptly jack knifed the truck on the first hill, no big deal, I cranked the 4x4 tractor I gave her for valentines day (yep, you read that right... we're a very practical family ;-) and pulled her up the hill..End of story right??? WRONG!!! She thought the truck was just not big enough, so she took it to our local used car dealer and traded MY truck for a 4x4 crew cab w/8'bed 7.3 ltr Power Stroke!!! Now I love the new truck, but now I have to carry a ladder with me just to get tools out of the tool bins... But she no longer has to worry about the truck and trailer not making it up the hill... I guess that old saying "If mommas not happy ain't nobody gonna be happy" rings true after all ;-) Enjoy your new project sir and HAVE FUN :-)

I see everyone commenting for the 2jz, but it would be really cool if he put a 2uz-fe engine in it. That's the 2000-2006 tundra/sequoia motor. If he finds a later model one he could get the iforce. It's a 4.7 v8, with weak rods. But you can swap the 2uz rods for the 1uz rods and then you can boost it for days. It's an iron block, so no melting that baby. I'd be very curious to see if it even fit (somewhat) in that engine bay. I agree with everyone else, it's called turbo garage for a reason!

It's the turbo garage, we all know he won't leave it stock. As cool as a turbo on the 4 banger would be, it's not going to pick up a ton from it. No replacement for displacement. The 2jz feels so overdone and the 2uz could be interesting. It's a question of space in that engine bay though.

I had an 03 TRD 4x4 with the v6 and 5 speed. Man, I loved that truck, but the frame eventually rusted out and it was totaled. I don't know how you've lived in the south so long and you've never owned a truck. I'm part of the "every man should have a truck" camp. Not sure how you skated by like that. And no 4x4, or manual? Wouldn't be my first choice, but you know cars and trucks better than most, especially me, so I'm sure you have your reasons. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with this. I imagine you'll have already taken the truck apart and started the rebuild by the time you check these comments. Enjoy it!

It was nice when I got my mom's 95 land cruiser. It had EVERYTHING, even the dealer brochure that I wish I took pictures of.
Sadly, it got stolen, and while I retrieved the car several days later, all of that (and a lot of interior pieces) were missing.
Edit: just got to your description of how slow it is, and thats nothing. Try adding 1500-2000 lbs, have only 220 hp (when new, it currently has 370k miles), an auto with nearly 30% frictional losses at full throttle, and THEN you will experience slow. its about 15 seconds 0-60

    • @TomsTurboGarage
      @TomsTurboGarage  Před 5 lety +1

Oh man, hate to hear stories like that. 😑 Oof, 15 sec 0-60 is pretty dang slow for sure.

Nice. I've got a '94 Extended Cab myself. V6/Auto/4WD/176k Miles. Still gets me to work every day and struggles on every hill along the way. I love it.. but it's time. I'm actually looking to pick up a new Tacoma TRD Off-Road as soon as my Mustang sells.

I wanted a nice clean first gen so badly. I always wanted a red one. I had a friend who had one in high school and I always thought it was a great looking truck. I gave up trying to find one with a manual that was in good shape with lower miles, ans living in SE Michigan at the time made it hard to find a used truck that wasn’t domestic. I ended up buying a new 2016 because at 32.5k it wasn’t much more than a lot of the lower miles 2nd gens on the market then. I love my 3rd gen, I’ll be driving it into the ground, but I have my eye open for a single cab first or second gen that i could do a solid front axle build on. Tacoma’s are great, and you appreciate them more the more you do stuff they’re great for (camping, off roading, overland stuff). So get out there and use it!

I used to own a 97 standard cab manual 2.4. I loved that truck and being a manual was significantly faster than the auto. I do wish you got the 3.4 V6 instead, night and difference in power even in automatic form. Excited to see what content you have for this truck in the future as all of your videos!

sweet little rig! The 2JZ bolts in very nicely with minimal mods - definitely a much easier build than your Miata haha. The 1UZ is a great swap option if you truly plan to use it like a truck and only a truck. But if you want to have some wicked fun, 2JZ is where it's at. Third option is to turbo-charge the 2RZ - if I recall correctly, these 4 bangers will take some boost but are built under-square, so high RPMs/high boost aren't as acheiveable. Anyway, check CZcams - lots and lots of sweet builds for ye ole Taco :D

There was a limited option on those trucks, I had a 2002 double cab tacoma limited. But SR5 and limited at that time were different options. Most likely those are slapped on badges. The Limited came with a chrome grill

That's an awesome truck. I had one. Same motor, trans, and body style. Best truck ever. I put 15 inch rims on it and big MasterCraft tires for more truck stuff fun. BTW it has all the torque in 1st and you can shift into second just by tapping the shift forward. Like a power glide.

@@TomsTurboGarage Hope you have as much fun with yours as I did with mine. I ran the miles up on the poor old girl. I bought it with just 97,000 miles and sold her with 450,000 miles. Very minimal maintenance, oil changes, brakes, and a battery is all she ever asked from me. God I miss that truck...
