      Thank you! I believe your SAT score is on the higher end of the middle 50% for NYU's typical incoming class stats. You are definitely at the level you need to be to compete with other applicants. However, scores are not what will admit you. Cornell does not have an Early Action program. They only have an Early Decision program. If you 100% only want to go to Cornell, then you could apply early. If you get in however, you have to be okay with not applying to any other schools. As for school that have an Early Action program (like Stanford) you are only allowed to pick one to apply to early. Cornell is difficult to get into regular or early, as all top tier schools are really competitive.

      What year did you get them in? Stanford doesn't look at freshman grades so if you got the majority of them in that year then you should be fine. A few B's won't make them reject you as long as they see improvement.

    Hi! I know stats don’t determine if you get into Stanford but do you think a lowish gpa will completely discount an applicant even if their sat is in Stanford’s
    range? I have a 3.8 weighted (every class I took so far has been weighted). It would be higher but I studied abroad for my junior year in Germany so i couldn’t improve my gpa by taking higher class...do you think they’ll take that into account?

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  Před 4 lety +1

      Sarah Jacobs Nothing discounts an applicant! Applicants are reviewed holistically. For you, studying abroad may have been more valuable for you as a student than taking a few more high level classes, which they will appreciate. I was in a dance ensemble in high school, so I was unable to take another AP class during my last 2 years of high school. I was ranked 7 in my class, where as if I hadn’t done a dance ensemble I may have been higher. Keep in mind though, that I was still among the top students in my class. If something you do that you’re passionate about sets you back in terms of GPA it’s not a big deal at all, unless it takes you out of the top student pool in your school, which could be a red flag.

      The Villain Personally, I think the level of difficulty is pretty similar. I think the ACT is a little harder. Scores matter in the sense that they need to meet a certain standard, but after they are in the middle 50%, it’s everything else that matters more.

      Rahel Aruse It will not decrease your chances at all. I recommend taking both if you have the means too, and then deciding which to focus on for studying based on which one you’re better at. If you have already decided one test is not for you, just focus on the other one. It’s a waste of time to try and do well on both. The only benefit of doing both is to figure out which one you personally are better at.

    • @jaysontatum5340
      @jaysontatum5340 Před 4 lety

      I’m not in college but I’ve researched a lot about colleges and I think I can answer these questions.
      1. Yes, majoring in a less popular major increases your odds of getting in. A less popular major doesn’t have much competition between students rather than say a computer science major. Colleges are looking to fill roles so this gives you upside.
      2. I think you should still shoot for it. Watch supertutortv’s explanation on why international students don’t get in frequently. It will help you determine whether or not colleges may decrease your odds of getting in.
      3. If you believe you have a chance at Stanford you can get into any college. College admissions is really by chance and what they’re looking for in a student. If you think you can make it into Stanford, shoot for other school too because you never know what their looking for.

    About rank, did people above or below you get into top schools that you did not or top schools in general? My classmates are great people and I feel that schools don't accept people from the same school, which brings me to my second question, did people from your school get accepted to same high level schools such as a Stanford or a Northwestern. Lastly being a fellow Texan were you ever afraid of not getting into major of choice at UT-Austin. I'm in the top 7% rule, but I heard major isn't guaranteed. Did you and most of your classmates get into major of choice?

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  Před 6 lety +2

      Nobody above or below me was accepted into a top school except for my valedictorian, who currently attends Harvard. It is true that top schools don’t accept a lot from a certain school. They like to have people from all different types of schools and regions. Depending on the competitiveness of the high school, a top school may accept more if there are a lot of strong applicants. But, you want to be the best applicant out of everyone at your school who is shooting for the same schools as you to give yourself the best shot.

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  Před 6 lety +1

      Phillip Tran For UT, it is true that you are not guaranteed your major even if you are an auto-admit. The majority of my friends did not receive their first choice major who were auto-admits since they chose very competitive STEM majors. Any engineering major will be very competitive. Biology/humanities majors have more spots available. For me personally, I applied to BME (only about 100 spots available). Personally, I was confident that I had a good shot because I had graduate level biomedical research experience - something that I did not think a lot of applicants would have. I felt that I had an edge that would help get me in, but your first choice major is definitely not guaranteed, auto-admit or not, so put your full effort into your app even if you are an auto-admit!

      @@JasmineRodriguez Thanks for answering:) To be completely honest I'm kind of having an emotional breakdown, so if you have the time and energy here it goes...(I need an honest and sincere opinion)
      So this is it (don't judge grammar I'm writing this quickly): My college counselor told me during our first meeting that I shouldn't even try applying to any top schools (like Stanford) as I got horrible grades through 9-11 grade (multiple F's, D's, C's and B's). I was struggling with my life and with situations at home (serious ones that I'm not going to elaborate about but just trust me here). In other words, I could not and did not want to put any effort into school or education as it was the only thing that I could still control about my life. Now, I truly believe that not caring about school or the grades I obtained was my own personal defense mechanism against everything happening. Again, I'm not going to go in detail about anything specifically as I don't want the whole internet to know everything about my private life.
      ANYWAYS, at the end of my 11th school year, I had a sudden revelation and decided to turn my life around completely. I became a different person who was literally begging her director for months to let her take the IB program (most challenging courses my high school offers) and thus stay an extra year and redo my 11th year. After what seemed ages of constant discussions they finally let me do it.
      This year, putting my heart and soul into my education I noticed the radical difference and it might not be great for you but for me, a student who was constantly on the verge of failing, I could not believe my eyes. I got straight A's and B's and only one B- (in math sorry I really can't deal with that subject ....but it was an improvement from previous F's).
      It's now the second semester and I now have straight A's and only one B (still in math lol). I was now a passionate student about education who demonstrated ongoing improvement.
      You can imagine how I felt when my college counselor told me I had no chances due to my previous grades. But, I told her that I refused to believe in this kind of mentality and that schools such as Stanford would surely not disqualify someone completely due to their grades and past! I truly believe that they would be holistic about their admissions. To this, she replied: "that's the American mentality, seriously, do not even try it's going to be NO".
      So here I am, dreaming about going to Stanford but realizing that she might be right. You really don't understand how much I had to sweat my ass off to become who I am; I don't care what people say, it's easier for someone who has always had perfect grades to maintain them as they know what teachers and the system asks of them than for students who never tried to get the same grades. So when my college counselor told me this, I wanted to cry my eyes out in the meeting but I knew better. It was one of the hardest moments of my life. This is why I'm commenting this as I want real opinions from people who have succeeded.
      So please do give me your honest opinion...
      Also, I did not talk about my SAT grades or the extracurricular's that I do outside of school... (I'm taking the SAT this summer and I have my own website where I publish my own poetry but also encourage other students to write their own poetry which I also publish, then there is also my blog where I write about anything and everything (reflects my personality TBH), I'm also currently writing a novel and finally I am a passionate weightlifter).
      I really hope that I do still have my chances. Maybe I was not and still am not the "model" student that top schools expect and YES my grades were really HORRIBLE.... BUT the world needs people who were beaten down to the ground but who found the will in them to stand back up to defy the world. The world doesn't need perfection but determination and action.
      thnx for reading this far. Your (or anyones really) answer could change my life (quite literally).
