  • David Kettlewell reassembles the very inexpensive $57 Swan SW1664, as part of a major customization project to create a credible low cost near-pro level harp.
Customizations: Reshaping covers to open them up at the back to improve projection and tonal clarity; sanding top face of comb and underside of mouthpiece to airtighten; smoothing oval hole for mouthpiece screws in the slide so bumpers last longer; lapping of slide to blanks for smoother slide action and improved airtightness; covering covers with gaffer's tape to darken tone.

David I've learned an immense amount of information from watching your you tube posts and I appreciate everything about your posts. I purchased a 1664 swan and have found a problem with whole 4 on the lower scale, the blow and draw don't work very well. I live in a small town in Ontario Canada and I have no where to take it to see if it can be repaired. other than returning it to the company, do you have any suggestions? Thanking you in advance John Garton

I called John to explain that player error is often the cause of trouble with hole 3 and 4 on a 16 holer. Try keeping tongue low in mouth, jutt jaw a bit forward, tilt head a bit down, and use the diaphragm. We'll see how it goes.

Related things to Google to convince one's self throat volume / shape difference matters.
Helmholtz resonance, (you only get one tone blowing across a Beer bottle neck)
Nose flute - mouth volume alters pitch.
Polyphonic overtone singing - watch the chick in the CZcams hit.
