How does boomerang relate to something like sanebox?

It doesn't really, but there are some features that overlap. Boomerang is specifically created for Gmail, where Sanebox basically sorts your email automatically and adds a couple of features on top of that by creating folders they fill up with specific emails (like emails you sent but weren't answered).
If you don't have access to the Gmail webinterface (which provides a couple of these features as well), I would suggest giving it a go!
