Torque or Moment of force:Definition: It is defined as the turning effect of a force about a fixed point and is measured as the product of magnitude of force and the perpendicular distance of line of action of the force from the fixed point.Let a force F ̅ acts on a single particle at a point 'P' in toy plane, whose position vector with respect to the origin 'O' is r ̅.The magnitude of moment of the force or torque of the force ‘f’ about the point ‘o’ is given by τ = Force intoperpendicular distance of the force from the axis of rotation
Summary:Torque: It is defined as the turning effect of a force about a fixed point and is measured as the product of magnitude of force and the perpendicular distance of line of action of the force from the fixed point.
The magnitude of moment of the force or torque of the force ‘f’ about the point ‘o’ is given by τ =Fr〖 sin〗⁡θ.
Torque of the force f ̅ about a point ‘o’ in vector from is given by τ=r ̅×f ̅
Couple:- Two equal unlike parallel forces whose lines of action are not the same constitute a couple.Assess yourself:
1).Is it possible to open a door by applying a large force at a point which is very close to the hinges?
2).What will be the condition for the equilibrium of a rotating body under the action of coplanar parallel forces?
3).Under which conditions the torque of a force acting on a body would be zero?
