Fun Fact: The actor that played Breckenridge (the guy killed in training) ended up marrying the actress that killed him, They hit it off on set and that was that :) So, Starship Troopers is a love story!
Can confirm this fact is Fun
She blew his mind on set.
I lol'd at both these replies. Well done.
@@SteelburghI would like to know more
So it seems that she blew him again after the filming. :)
Even to this day Casper Van Dien gets yelled "Rico! You know what to do!" from strangers and he will reply "Sir, yes, sir!"
not the most noted actor....
but an icon for those who know...
@@Metzwerg74This, and Sleepy Hollow are his two best.
The story was written by Robert heinlan stinking Google can't spell...Heinlein.
I can see my copy playing this day. Haven't read it in years but it's not a long book. The book is a lot different. A lot.
Explain so many things better than they did in the movie. And there's a surprise at the end. Read the whole book.
@@charleslatora5750 yea the film has nothing to do with the book other than the name, both great though.
I've met Dina Meyer who plays Dizzy. She is the loveliest and most adorably goofy person you could wish to meet. And is still absolutely gorgeous.
I bet she gets a lot of people saying they like her better than Denise Richards. I'm sure she doesn't mind it either.
She was in 2 of my favorite movies Dragonheart where she played Kara and Star Trek: Nemesis where she played Romulan Commander Donatra
Would
She also played Barbara Gordon (AKA Oracle) in the TV series Birds of Prey
@@artembentsionov I was about to say! 😂 She was one of the rare depiction of Batgirl on TV. We don't see much of that character in live action stuff.
FUN FACT: The Starship Trooper armor was used by the Alliance in the show FIREFLY!
That's amazing!!!
And Power Rangers Lost Galaxy along with numerous B Sci Fi movies.
@@PaganLyondamn beat me to it
There was an auction of this film's props and costumes back in the day that I missed by virtue of being a day late hearing about it and having no money at the time, but I will always regret not getting a chance to get one of the original armor sets. I hear they went stupidly cheap, too, since there were so many of them.
Best show in the Verse
It's crazy how well the effects in this movie have held up! The only reason it didn't get the best effects Oscar is because a little movie called Titanic came out the same year, which is a damn shame.
Ah, yes the boat film that wanted audiences to care more about a fictional couple than any of the 1500 real victims of that tragic event. And portrayed a real life man as a coward when he wasn't. Bleh.
Starship Troopers is better! :D
you are totally right, but I'm curious who was the man who was portrayed like a coward?@@carn9507
I recently watched this on a 4k disc and it looks amazing.
It's a shame since the effects in this film hold up better than Titanic. But SST was a very unpopular film on release; it took years before critics realized it was satire.
@@aniynOh, come on! Plenty of people knew it was satire from day one. Critics didn’t like it not because they didn’t understand the satire, but because this movie is full of bad acting, horrible writing and juvenile plot elements.
I love how Zim is hanging out in the background of the chow hall, and is already sizing up Rico as someone who could be a natural leader.
I never noticed until you said it haha and I've watched this dozens of times
Its funny, because I've seen this movie so many times..and didn't notice that till tonight.
I always loved that when Carmen sends Johnny the 'dear john' letter, everyone else starts off in their normal 'screwing around' mode, then they all realize 'oh shit it's THAT letter' and immediately back off and leave him alone.
That's male friendship in a nutshell
I always loved that Rue McClanahan (Blanche from Golden Girls) was their science teacher.
Really? Never knew that. Don't recognize her in those goggle shades.
TIL. Man, this movie is just full of hidden gems.
I guess she played a man who wasn't a science teacher very well.
“…they sucked his brains out” 🤣🤣🤣i love how ridiculous and amazing this movie is…and then it just gets MORE ridiculous and MORE amazing and I just keep on loving it lol
The director had the same problem.. "How will I adapt the book to a movie?! I have to go "
Casp and his wife are good friends of mine. Some of his line deliveries always make me laugh. I love how even now if people yell lines from the movie, he'll always reply in character. Also, dope how they reused the armor in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and other shows!
It was also the armor of the Alliance in Firefly.
sickened me that they used it in Firefly.
@@Hiraghm But it helped keeping cost down and still give a big budget feel.
Love Rico's character. He took administrative punishment before quitting.
Hey, Addie! 🙂
So, Starship Troopers was meant to be over-dramatic. It's a satire of war movies.
In addition to "Total Recall (1990)," Paul Verhoeven also directed "Robocop (1987)."
I highly recommend checking that movie out if you haven't already. Cheers!!
yes, it's a vile parody of the book. It pretty much contradicts the messaging of the book.
@@HiraghmYou mean it is a parody of a vile fascist book?
@@Hiraghm The movie does indeed condemn fascism instead of admiring it. Oh nO wHaT a TrAgEdY! Because fascism is so great instead?
@@AnnekeOosterink The Federation is not Facist - It is a democracy which allows people to avoid public service by giving up the franchise.
@@Songfugel Oh dear, you clearly never read or completely misunderstood the book....
Such a great shot of a ship being cut in half with all the decks visible, you very rarely get that much detail in space battles.
A+
Funny background story, for the co-ed shower scene a lot of the actors on set were initially unwilling with one claiming she wouldn't do the scene unless Verhoeven was also naked. To their surprise he readily agreed and directed at least one take of the scene naked in his chair.😅
I'm still undecided on whether doing a movie with Verhoeven would be hilarious or deeply terrifying.
yes, verhoven was quite a pervert in the original meaning of the term. Of course, in the book, as was reality before we lost our minds, men and women didn't shower together.
"You're it until we're dead or until I find someone better."
"Ah, my wedding vows."
-Mike Nelson, Rifftrax Live: Starship Troopers
I love that zim did infact bust himself down to private to get back into the field and he caught the brain bug
never happened. He was Rico's top sergeant when he captured the brain bug; the book kept his identity secret until the reveal at the end of the action.
@Hiraghm in the book, maybe. In the movie, he clearly demotes himself to private.
I can't help but laugh when I see NPH in the 2nd half of the movie...
Doogie Howser, SS! 😂
Barney Stinson, SS!
Doogie Himmler they called him on set.
Starship Troopers! This is one unique film. Some of the CGI special effects hold up remarkably well, and I don't know how, as they're so old they should look dated, but they still look good.
It is also considered one of the worst adaptations of a book ever written.
Fun fact: Addie Counts is becoming somewhat desensitised to blood and gore. Where once it made her freak the freak out, now she just, eh, winces a bit, curls the lip and maybe arches an eyebrow if she's really grossed out.
"Put your hand on that wall Trooper! PUT YOUR HAND ON THAT WALL!!!". Love that scene.😂
I love this movie so much. Not only does it do biting satire really well (with Casper Van Dien especially nailing that aspect of his character) but it does the character relationships really well too. And, of course, it works great as a big-action movie too, so you can easily just turn your brain off for a while and have fun if you want
you HAVE to turn your brain off, or it will make you turn the movie off and go read the book.
@@Hiraghm lol no
@@Hiraghm Yes yes, from your comments it's obvious you love a fascist dictatorship. We know.
They censor the cow being torn to pieces but none of the humans being torn apart..... lol
Brst prediction ofvthe future I have ever seen in a movie.
That was required by censors in 1997. They didn't require censoring the scenes with humans.
This movie shares a special place with a few others for me concerning the detail in special effects beyond the immediate impression. What this means is on repeated viewing(s) I continually find small things that didn't 'need' to be included but were and I consider this a great example of pride in one's efforts. I don't mean 'Easter Eggs' but extra detail which really sells the scenes.
BTW: Since you put your own efforts into the sponsor, I don't skip.
Still laughing at the Xander 'freeze frame'.
I really thought the powered armor was special. Much better than, say, Iron Man.
@@Hiraghm It does make an appearance in the 2nd sequel ( along with Johnny Rico!) which is more watchable than the 1st sequel. Starship Troopers: Marauder also has Jolene Blalock.
when you said "is that clancy brown?" i knew i made the right decision to subscribe to your channel. you know a great actor when you see one.
i saw this in the theatre when it came out and it blew my mind. i thought it was fantastic. a year or two later i read the book. the book is sooo much better and very different than this movie. the book is short, you can get through it in a few (4-6 ish) hours if you read quickly (it was a pulp fiction type of novel back in the 50's) but the movie didn't include most of what made the book great. i have a copy of it, i'm willing to send it to you if you're ok with that. if not, i'm sure your local library has a copy to borrow. regardless, you've got to read it. everyone should read it at least once in their life. and everyone who does so will take away different bits of it, as they should. it's in my top ten books of all time.
That sponsor ad was masterfully done.
Bravo!
Did Addie call Total Recall "light-hearted"? That's not exactly how I'd describe that movie. 😄
For the record, the same director also made Robocop. His sci-fi work always has thought-provoking themes and bitingly satirical humor, but they certainly aren't cute romps by any means. Not when characters are gruesomely getting torn to pieces or melted into mush by toxic waste.
Ok...the in vid commercial Starship references were top tier. Well played Addie!
The ad read at the beginning, brilliant 😂😂😂
Did you notice?
Every time they are on a commercial, they censor any violence. Every time they show a war scene, they have no problem showing the gore in full.
Yet the commercials celebrate symbolic violence by children, and even show soldiers handing out bullets to kids 😬
@@LordVolkov That's why I feel like this is such a hilarious satire of the glorification of war, even up to Dizz's death and how we never find out WHY we at war with the bugs at all.
@@MrChava54 I enjoy the theory that BA is a false flag to allow Earth to go to war. How are bugs going to send a meteor through a wormhole to precisely hit Earth? The physics of it are bananas.
Fascism needs an enemy to keep the people stoked up - they have to be militarily powerful but always have an ever-present 'strong' foe to direct the public's fear and hatred towards.
That's Paul Verhoeven's style, he likes to point out the hypocrisy of governments, corporations and media in his movies, it's what makes the likes of Robocop and Total Recall so enjoyable, that "Do as I say but not as I do" theme.
@MrChava54 no, there are Mormon settlers trying to colonize Klendathu, and of course the news would never show this but necessarily that does entail colonial violence against the native life forms there
Great job on the Square Space promo. I loved the use of "Do you want to know more?" from the movie. Well done Addie!
Me watching Starship Troopers at 16: KILL ALL BUGS BUGS MUST DIE
Me watching Starship Troopers at 42: uhhhh, are WE the….bad guys?
Yes, we were.
That's the whole point ofcthe book.
Don't belive the bugs propaganda
I get that... but no we were not (per word of god: The Director).
The bugs and the federation were at detente.
The mormons ignored the treaty.
The bugs over reacted and started a full on war.
The bugs *did strike* Buenos Ares (it wasn't a false flag per the director).
The bugs were an intersteller species (per the movie)
The bugs did serious damage to multiple human colonies including the vacation planet (per the movie)
The bugs had bread special purpose bugs that could bring down intersteller warships in orbit.
And the federation was a constitutional republic with a limited voter franchise-- that allowed more of the population to vote than every democracy pre 1900 and many pre 1939.
They didn't have a dictator.. .they didn't violently suppress people who disagreed with the government... they didn't control the economy ( rico's parents were not soldiers but were crazy wealthy).
But you have to make up your own mind and your own choice. That's the only freedom we ever really have.
@@macmcleod1188 The bugs being an interstellar species could have been war propaganda. The director is not the word of god. The writers are.
@Blag_Cog the bugs for an Interstellar species per Robert heinlein. And the writer had the characters say the bugs had struck several other Terran planets in the movie. And the director said that the bugs attack was not a false flag.
So that's 3 for 3 dude.
I love the overly excited mom. She looks like she's had 3 too many cups of expreeso. 😂
This movie is such a timeless satire, it really grabs you in with the feeling of "wanting to know more" lol. If you end up re-watching it, you'll see more than there is between the lines.
It is meant to be satire, but since the director never read the books because he thought he was too good, he actually made a compelling argument for that system and their life.
It's almost as good as someone that would have been more into it.
@@DarthPoyner Actually the book is serious and not satire, sadly. Heinlein was a military fanatic and intentionally glorified it.
@@Steelburghit's why the movie is the superior text
@@DarthPoyner My pet theory is that the director is an idiot savant: he keeps making brilliant movies he himself doesn't understand. Taken at cheesy face value, they're just wonderful. Taken as satire, of course, they're completely idiotic and self defeating, but that helps you spot a certain brand of person ;).
@DarthPoyner no he didn't. If you think this way, you're the gullible one that the movie is making fun of.
Dean norris/Hank shrader (breaking bad) Clancey brown (the shawshank redemption) Jake busey (enemy of the state) Casper van dien (Starship troopers) Denise richards (wild things) A lot of really good actors in this movie. i put it out of my mind that were a few sequels (5 including the original). no one returned as far as i know.
If you haven't seen it, RoboCop is another brutally satirical sci-fi film by Verhoeven, this time about the privatization of government services and the militarization of police. It's very good, and if you've ever seen That 70's Show, one of the main villains will shock you.
I'd buy that for a dollar! :)
Personally, I've always been sickened by Eurotrash like Verhoven using America to make money by bashing America.
"I love fun Sci-fi" now watching starship troopers...

"I'm doing my part!"
The split screen freeze-frame at 31:02 was amazing, kudos!
In the book, the recruit's arm was broken by accident because he charged too soon and Zim apologized to him. And the Dizzy/Zim fight was Zim vs the son of the man who trained Zim (and it ended about the same).
However, in the movie it is actually a great science fiction moment (along with the knife scene) because it shows you just how effective their medical technology is which pays for the scene with johnny's leg later. A compound fracture is basically pain-free in 15 minutes and healed by the following day.
"Luck had nothing to do with it. We have a hell of a flight crew."
I mean they did just alter the path directly into an asteroid and then failed to see it because they were too busy flirting with each other, but sure.
Verhoeven also directed "Robocop" which is SciFi comedy/action/drama. Highly recommend.
The humans r actually the bad guys. I the second movie there is a throw way line about how the bugs didn’t attack until humans invaded their territory.
Ridiculous story , of course he'd have gone for Dizzy right from the beginning 😂
You have blown my mind with truth
For as good a ball player as Rico is, it took forever for him to catch what Diz was throwing from day one 😅
I dunno, Denise Richards in her prime…😘
@JoeWedgwood-ik9zo definitely but always looked like one missed meal from starving to death
The whole point is that he's such a perfect fascist subject, he doesn't even go for anyone unless he's told to by an authority figure
The actress who played thebiology teacher, is Rue Mclanahan, best known for appearing in the TV sitcom, "The Golden Girls".
Well, can't miss Addie watch another movie she is completely unprepared for! *busts out popcorn*
Also, the actors in this movie who were without limbs were amputees. Paul Verhoven wanted to use them to add to the realism.
Most of... the actor who plays radzshack is not an amputee
Lmao the brain bug on planet P looking like a who ha. Kills me every time I see this movie. Guess I'll never grow up. 😂😂🤣🤣
"Hit the nerve...i don't remember what he said?!"
Sadly neither did they haha
"Hey, It's Addie and today we're watching Starship Troopers"......Interally, "oh jeez this girl has no clue what she's in for, LOL"
I think most will agree, Dizz is one of the most heroic and saddest deaths in cinema.
Yes, the same director as RoboCop and Showgirls.
That biology teacher was one of The Golden Girls.
Several cast members from Total Recall here.
“Make it 20 minutes.” 😏
I always find it weird when people say CGI is ok, or "holds up", when they can't even tell the difference between CG and live action. Like... doesn't the fact you can't tell the difference mean it looks amazing, in your eyes?
I see this happen so many times. With some people literally saying "Is that cg, or live action?", then at the end, going "The CG was alright, definitely dated tho". I don't know what you people are basing this on.
Not just for Starship Troopers, but any movie pre-2005
People seem surprised that any movie more than a few years old doesn't look as bad as Bwana Devil or Tron.
I so very much love that you you kept my favorite scene from this movie in your reaction. "Put your hand on that wa'all!' Good stuff 😂
25:14 "Is the bug in him?" That won't be a thing until Starship Troopers 2
If you pause at the right moment at 2:27 you can see the cutest bug trying to wink

This movie was way ahead of it's time. Classic

Would you like to know more?
The over the topness, was done on purpose. This is actually based on a book. There was also a Starship Trooper Arcade video game that came out way before the movie.
Most people don't realize that this movie was based on a Robert Heinlein "JUVENILE science fiction" book from 1959 - I remember reading it in 8th grade. As is usually the case, the book has WAY more detail than the movie - really good read!
I like the dog on your sofa. It's very chill.
MEDICCCC!!!
8:30 - "Thank you for censoring it for me"

Deena was such a hottie.
The director also did Robocop so you can regonize the style.
A random fun fact, the drill instructor is the voice of Mr Krabs, the punch Rico threw actual conected during the fight scene, and the co-ed shower scene the only way the agreed to that scene is if the Director was in showers naked with them.
I can't get over learning only recently that Sgt. Zim is also Mr. Krabs.
And Lex Luthor from the Justice League
most important.... Curgan from highlander...
Book was completely different. On example of knife scene - in book it was about limiting force needed to achieve goal, you dont need destroy city with nuke if can use just knife.
So, I'm sure loads of people have already suggested these films, but your acquired love for sci-fi really requires you to see "Children of Men" (generally considered the best sci-film of this century); "Arrival" (which I love so, so much); "Blade Runner"(one of the OG classics of the genre) and then "Blade Runner 2049" (which is so gorgeous and I also really loved); "District 9" which I think is slightly forgotten but just great; and for a real mind bender, "Under the Skin" with Scarlett Johansson. I'm sure others can add even more to that list. Great reaction to this film, which is sort of a guilty pleasure watch for me. So cheesy but amazing creature effects.
Fun Fact: 8:13 The murderer was played by Starship Troopers screenwriter Edward Neumeier
The troopers battle gear was used on "Firefly" the feds on the train for "Train job" were wearing them.🤓❤️🔥🇨🇦

you can use the word: fascism.
@@MusikCassetteIf he used the word Fascism he'd be lying. The government written both in the book and movie are the antithesis of Fascist despite what the director Paul Verhoeven demanded of his writing team.
The Federation isn't authoritarian. Every character chose to be where they were and calling a movie about soldiers in a war a send-up for military fanaticism is just blatantly disingenuous and outright moronic.

The guy who played Rico has a daughter who is an actress. She was in season four of Stranger Things (died in episode one).

Yay! fun for the whole family!
This is one of my favorite channels, it's like watching the movie again for the first time. Starship Troopers is a gore-fest and tons of fun. Thank you for sharing.
The director also did RoboCop, which I recommend.
Dizz dying is really important part of the film , Rico gets to eulogize the most passionate, brave and loyal character in the entire film and the only woman that will ever love him ......he reaches down to most meaningful thing to say , and he regurgitates the regimes boiler plate sentiments. Ooooooof in re-watching thats a gut punch.
OMG i loved how you saw how they did in movie commercials programs and took advantage of it SOO COOL
Appreciation for the ad read! 👏
You might've missed the point of the movie- it's a satire on war and society...hence the "over the top". Most of Paul Verhoeven's movies have the same dystopian themes.
"According to military intelligence, it will be random and light."
Military intelligence is a contradiction of terms.
When I saw this in a theatre I remember exiting and having to double over for a bit (hands on knees) to recover because that kind of action was something I had never witnessed before on a large screen and I guess I was in a mild state of shock.
Anyway I like how a lot of your guesses about what would happen next turned out to be right.
I love this movie. It's an awesome movie. Do not compare it to the original book. It is about something completely different than this. But definitely worth a read. Hugs and kisses from El Mota.

Robocop (1987) is another sci fi masterpiece form Paul Verhoeven, that you should watch next.
