- Vocal Coach Reaction To Jon Bon Jovi - Livin On A Prayer - Ken Tamplin
Many years ago I was fortunate to have a small brush with the Monsters of Rock Festival throughout Europe.
On that bill were The Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Michael Schenker and a couple other artists.
It was fun getting to speak with and get up close and personal with these artists to see how they warmed up and to watch them perform at close range.
Not the least of which was Bon Jovi.
Jon was very warm and approachable.
Bon Jovi was a well-oiled machine with awesome lights, effects, sound and great stage presence.
I also realized that many of these Bon Jovi songs were very difficult to sing especially if you over sang the bottom and try to release and relax to go up top for the higher notes.
With that said I hope you enjoy my covering "Livin' On A Prayer" and keep in mind that I am a baritone singing way up into this registration. This is proof it can be done with the correct information and good old hard work.
Check out my and my student Alyona's version:
• Livin' On A Prayer - B...
• Livin On A Prayer - Bo...
I'll me posting a version by me in the near future.

Aside Jon Bon Jovi, richie sambora is also a great backing vocalist! Probably one of the best duos in rock history
Mr. Bounce! I can't disagree, Sambora doing his tribute for the troops was awesome as well.
Noel and Liam 😆
The BEST dúo Richie and jon
Richie Sambora's solo album was great from start to finish.
@@YouOnlyGetToDoItOnce layne and jerry.
Jon and Richie
Are still the Best
Duo in Rock History! Hands Down!! ❤❤❤
They were indeed an awesome two!
I've always loved Bon Jovi growing up. Ritchie never got the real recognition that he deserved. I feel like he was very underrated in the music world.
Totally agree, and he is one of the greatest guitarists ever
Tonya Royland I agree also
Agreed 💯 👍
Believe it or not, I was singing my lungs out with "Wooah Oooh!!" when you held out the "mic" to me.
Problem is, I got my headphones on. Getting weird stares from my family. I think my wife's already googling "mental institutes near you".
WTF 😂😂😂
So.. Jon and Ritchie did such an amazing job when they went acoustic back in the 80s at the award show. Thise people did NOT appreciate how fricking AMAZING they wetet. Man, to have seen it LIVE!!!
Christie Kraczek RIGHT !!
If you want to see his more powerful voice you should check out his 1991 oscar performance of Blaze of glory or their 1992 mtv 'concert'.
Paco- thank you!
True.thats what i always Think if its about his voice.
Paco That performance is mindblowing
Jon is the greatest!! especially at this concert!!
Bret Michaels Fanpage Great show!
As my brother used to sing: "whoa, we're half-way there, whoa, living on my hair!"
Swamper60 Hahaha!
Jon and Ritchie are 2 of the best of all time. My favorite rock duo of all time. I miss Ritchie too. His "Stranger In This Town" has some of the most amazing vocal songs I've ever heard - songs that haunted me for years! And ya, when I've heard Jon in that Video in Wembly Stadium and other big stadiums, he does use a more nasal style than on his albums, but with Jon it always sounds amazing. Thanks for doing that.
Thanks for watching, Daniel!
So pleased I got to grow up to all these bands.
i have seen Bon Jovi in Chile at 2017 for my 18’ birthday(a gift from my mom, she loves him since decades) and he’s still a LEGEND, i love him
Jon's winning smile is killing me! I love his stage presence. He's a huge talent and at the same a sweet and nice person. Their songs are top-shelf! I'll never say which I love more. Impossible!💗😘😘🤘🎸🎶
Richie and Jon are a perfect combination! Their voices were ment for each other!💖😍😍💕
When analyzing Bon Jovi vocals, please don't exclude David Bryan because he is the one doing the high pitch stuff. And moreover he has always been the one singing the high "Whoohah" part, not Jon.
i egree on that david doing it also perfectly the backing vocals
Exactly! Back in '86 ,before Jon shot his vocals, it was Jon and Dave hitting the high notes in the chorus and key change, Alec chipped in most times as well. I've never seen Richie sing those high notes live, which is interesting
I never knew that!
at least when Jon started struggling with the key change. Back in 1986 he could really hit those, just listen to Bradford 1986 :D
They don't do that anymore. Jon cops out and holds the mic out to the crowd. Disappointing, but time is ruthless.
Sambora is very underrated
Both his signing & guitar playing are very underrated
The best band in the world and one of eternal Rock songs ever!!!
jose eduardo Yes indeed!
I always loved the beginning of this song with that "woah wah wah woah woah" and then the transition to "Johnny used to work on the docks" 👌
John did great job in Always at that concept in 95. Love that version more than original recording. Richi is monster!
Always from that show IS PURE GOLD
,, Once upon a time, not so long ago.. the legendary JOVIMAGIC..!!✨💕🤩
I had the chance to be on the last Central Park concert they did, biggest thrill of my life, I went to Jones Beach two weeks before the concert and there was a radio station there I played a game and won two tickets for the concert, I will never forget it... I love Bon Jovi and this song...
eve ruby Very cool!
That was Wembley stadium 25th June 1995, I know I was at that show, it was amazing
The back vocal from Richie on I’d die for you are so insane. Listen to the 1995 version from that same concert, just after the solo.
Ritchie was totally underrated vocally! He has an incredible voice. He and Jon together sounded amazing!
Here is a guy with a real passion for what he does, when you do a job you love, it's impossible not to be happy in life.
thehomefront 👍👍👍
I Love When Richie Does “I’ll Be There For You”
I hear a lot of twang in John's voice. It's unique and sort of goes with his looks, especially in songs like "Miracle" and "Always."
Thanks for sharing your perspective, VIDEOHEREBOB!
Thanks for doing this Ken!! Bon Jovi is my all time favorite and I still listen to his latest music.
NOLI Awesome!
I love Jon, He is unbelievable. Still the best. He sings with a heart that's why he is the best 🙌❤️
Nice!
I clearly remember when this album came out in 1986. I was 6 years old and my older cousin was cranking it on her stereo. It was that moment that I knew that I wanted to be a musician. I loved music but this grabbed me and moved me like nothing before it. There was something special about what Bon Jovi had on the first 3 albums that I wish they could get back.......and Alec John Such!
Bless you Ken, you're such a gentle soul.
Thanks Funkierthanafunkything!
That scream in Ill be there for you killed me, Wish he could still do it, I seen Ritchie do it not long ago, Im sure you seen love to get your take on that , Rock On
Wow, hanging out with Bon Jovi and Scorpions... Never been the crazy type of fan, but that's the stuff of dreams!!! Especially in the 80's!!!
It's amazing how that show is still getting reviews and compliments, one of the greatest rock show ever! Just amazing
I know, right?
@@kentamplin loved your channel, trying to learn all I can from you! Thanks a lot
Great analysis. Sambora never had the true credit to his work. I really like his tone or color voice. Yo should do some Sambora analysis. Please. 👏
They tune down a half step when they play live. Maybe a full step these days. Great song writing. Richie and Jon work so well together.
I'd be interested to see you react to Jon's vocals now and see if you can identify the issues and stuff he's got going on
James DodsworthThanks for the suggestion.
You're always so happy and bright. It's like you have a spiritual glow around you bro. Definitely doing something right!
Another great band a tremendous singer with lot of charisma and a underrated guitarist in my opinion
I agree, Urbano Ramos!
Urbano Ramos who is yhe underrated guitar player, richie I can guess because he since he critiqued it's my life he did his own sentence!
Urbano Ramos to be in a band isn't a life's sentence!
Great video. Thanks!. I was huge fan of Bon Jovi because of Richie....He is my idol forever. I am very sad that he left band but he is on his own way with his solo music and actually he started last year work on new album and i hope will be soon out maybe on his 60thBirthady this year or maybe on fall? Will see...I just will be support his music. I am sad about Jovi music since he left...And Jon voice is gone and broken permanently..I just dont undrstand why he need still touring...He dont have anymore to offer...
MTV awards 87 has the best live version, it’s raw, full of energy
that key change at the end really will put the larynx into your eye balls
Haha! 😊
My name in this song 😉 Richie Sambora is the MAN!! Loved his vocals, harmonies.. he helped make Jon..imo ❤️🎶 (auto correct kills me)
Gee Me 👍👍👍
you are my hero ken! Always great you are! love from Bangladesh
Thank you, Imrul! I'm not worthy!
@@kentamplin Thank you sir. You are very responsible for your listeners and viewers. That makes me very happy.
ken, of course you are worthy. You are just great!
I’m a Bon Jovi fanatic and have picked up an ear for what their playback sounds like, pretty sure the high notes are sung by Richie and David Bryan (the keyboardist) here. Jon rarely sang the high notes, typically lip syncing the entire chorus in 1986-1989 singing occasionally. He stopped faking in 1990, and sang the high notes a few times in 1993. Love and totally agree with the points you made, especially about Richie. Killer vocals and guitar is amazing of course.
Mike Stagnone 👍👍👍
I've waited to see your reaction on Jon Bon Jovi not singing the chorus anymore, this just gold explanation.
Love your videos
Thanks CroPels!
God I miss the 90's bon jovi best band ever
They are awesome, Idan 101!
Its really hard to sing Bon Jovi Songs. Most of the Songs David and Richie helped him out on vocals
Being a woman who has a pretty wide range I have a hard time with some of their songs. Their ballads I'm okay with. But songs like this are a pain in the ass.
@@mcrchickenluvr true.hard to sing those high notes
They had to they had to help Jon when his voice gave out They are a Band of Brothers and always help each other. Why do you think they are still around today.
It's a personal dream of mine to be able to sing this song! Though I feel on my way to accomplishing that spending an hour a night on Ken's amazing course. Ken, thank you mate, you're a legend!
I enjoyed that, I can't believe this was 24 years ago 🤦 I was at that very concert. Amazing night 🤘🏻
So glad you enjoyed it, Paul!
It is sad that Jon can't sing the chorus anymore, but, at the same time, I respect that he does not lip sync.
That is a great point, SirDeviless!
Bon Jovi is in my top 5 bands of all time, I absolutely LOVED his voice in the 80s. Today, due to his vocal issues and changing style, he is so nasily sounding. I still see him live when he is in our area, simply because his shows are still amazing, but damn would it be awesome to hear the songs the way they were meant to be sung. Wanted Dead or Alive is my anthem..... unfortunately, he cant sing it like he used to. BUT, that being said, when he does Always.... im not sure if he is using tracks, but he belts that song out.
reid1boys Definitely the sound of the 80s. Great band. Great songs.
I think he saves his vocal powers for Always. It’s brutally hard to sing, and the performance at Wembley shows he definitely still has it in him, even if it’s inconsistent.
I think he forces himself on Always WAY too hard, you can literally see the pain he’s in. But regardless it was impressive
Living for my lord is better than living on a prayer. Your such a good dude. Rock on
That is kind of you to say, John!
Lucky for Jon that this just happens to be one of the greatest crowd sing along songs ever. The crowd are waiting for this moment, letting him off the hook nicely .Always a great frontman though.
Checkout the version of Always from this show. Unbelievable
AgentX Thanks for the suggestion.
KEN TAMPLIN
You are Awesome!
BON JOVI is Awesome!
Thank you for sharing your reaction to Bon Jovi. I can't wait to hear what you sound like! I know you Nailed it!
Have a Awesome weekend and God Bless You!
BON JOVI has gone Country, now :-(. Oh, well. Still good.
Can you do a reaction
to "THIS HOUSE IS NOT FOR SALE" by BON JOVI.
Thanks RJEFF!
They didnt go Country.they just had one Album which was lil Country influenced.but still Far away From Country music in my opinion. This House is not for sale is a good Song
Awesome reaction video Ken !! 😁🖒
Thanks dan!
Ken you are Absolutely wonderful vocal Teacher..best vocal Teacher
Wow, thank you!
PLEASE do a reaction of any song from Sambora's first solo album
His singing is brilliant
Ignacio Sanchez Sanabria Thanks for the suggestion.
True.Stranger in this town is Killer.Richie showed his Talent on This Record
Ritchie Sambora is only famous because of Jon Bon Jovi... that is obvious.
Bonjovi is smart enough to handle...he is one of the greatest singers of all time👍
Thanks, Khraw!
This video was less of a vocal analysis and more of joining Ken over a classic Bon Jovi track!! Usually, I listen to Ken explaining and analyzing..but this one was a fun sing-along with some good old stories. I enjoyed it :)
Hitesh_blues Friday sing-a-long. Everyone join in!!
@@kentamplin Absolutely...count me in!!
God! Everytime I listen to this band I get goosebumps. I love rock. It's in my veins and Bon Jovi is my favourite band.
It's very sad I didn't grow up in the 80's
I'm a 20 years old girl now and sometimes I cry when I think I wasn't lucky to live those days
The Bon Jovi band is my life
Richie is my life
I love his voice, his guitar, his presence on stage and he's such an inspiration to me
I think I will never see them live with Richie ...
Is it great encouragement for us beginners. That even Jon Bon Jovi is only human, which not singing every time on 100%. And is it reason, that we all beginners, can compare with him.
Ken Therapy Keep up the hard work!
I think I could get through that if I had Ritchie and the band to do the "Whoa-Ohh Livin on a prayer" part, or even just the "Whoa-ohh" party of that. Ritchie does an amazing job if it anyways with his amazing high voice!
I agree Daniel, Richie does a great job!
One of my favorite singer...thanks...
Benlen Tiglao You're welcome!
I saw Bon Jovi 4 times with Sambora. Each time I looked forward to when Richie took lead. One time he sang Homebound Train! I was so bummed when he left the band.
You and a lot of people. Rock on, Douglas!
I totally agree. Richie's voice made that band what it was...
Wow! Been waiting for that for years from ya! Nice job 😊
The British Lad Thanks for viewing!
Ken, what a fantastic video! Your reaction is priceless. Relished it so much.💞💞🌹🌹🥳🥳🤩👍🏻
My favorite rock song ever. Livin on a prayer.
I love when you sing in the courses
Thanks, Warzy!
😱 i thought u wouldnt reply
You could always review Richie doing I’ll be There For You at MSG in 09
I was at this concert, unforgettable
Thanks Ken for your expert opinion! I am ROBBO ( Thin Lizzy ) Motorhead partner, just sitting with our son Logan when I found this comment on Bon Jovi. I met the guys on 1984 tour and again on their slippery when wet tour, it was the latter in 1986 that I found myself side stage when Jon was definately using reel tracks because I stood right next to the machine at Hammersmith Odeon, he used these all the time not just sometimes, Ritchie helped with exceptional backing vocals! Just thought I would mention what I saw at the gigs!
Thanks, Karen.
Bon Jovi got his start with the Star Wars Christmas special.
Interesting, Holobrine!
Ahh....weren’t the 80’s fun :). I miss those days
#kiske #kiskethevoice
ScaleWorx Kustoms They sure were!
Still my favorite crush Jon Bon Jovi. ! Love him. Jovi girl for ever!
Как мне нравятся эти ваши исторические музыкальные обзоры!!!!
Spot on... I love this song, but the original soundtrack really rocks, this "live" version though, not so much. But kudos to Bon Jovi and the band, (esp. Ritchie).. they gave us some great songs over the years to sing (or SHOUT) to.. still some of my favorites even to this day.
Your reaction videos are GREAT!!!
It is Me Glad you think so!
The talk-box was popularized by Jeff Beck, Peter Frampton, and of course both Richie Sambora and Phil X
Monsters of Rock was the best concert I ever seen, excellent!
Probably Jon's best vocal era..the whole these days album, besides being a masterpiece, it's sung just so damn well. Please do a Richie Sambora reaction (maybe father time '91...simply unbelievably good)....and few more requests :D ...Richie Kotzen and Tom Keifer
Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name Live 1982
Yea !!!! Good one
I think this Hammersmith one was the first time they play songs from Number of the beast, so considering this was probably the first time he really sang this, Dickinson kicked ass in this particular version,,,,best version of Hallowed be thy name in my opinion
I love this song ❤
I'll second this. Ken absolutely should do a cover and while he is at it also a reaction video.
My background is in film and I have to say, I love the format here much better than the longer shot of you sitting in front of your sound board. You rock that black shirt! 😊
Thanks!
I was at that concert at Wembley London 1995 and was a great show with Thunder, Van Halen and Little Steven as supporting acts.
I agree with your critique he didn't put everything into this song.. Jon and I graduated from the same HS.. He was 3 years behind me..
Thanks for sharing, Dawn!
That's when Bon Jovi was good but listen to him sing today, and he just doesn't sound the same
Pierre B Bummer.
Pierre B I don’t listen to any of his music after early nineties.
@@kentamplin And Bon Jovi doesn't sound good without Richie Sambora. His voice guitar and songwriting added a lot to the band.
One of your best reactions Ken, loved it when you passed the mic on to your viewers!!!
Also, saw Def Leppard at the download festival last night and they were amazing
You know what Ken?
You would leave them all in the dust
Respectfully
I have trained with your CZcams

I enjoy your videos, Ken!
Swamper60 I'm really happy to hear that!
Yeeeaaahhh!!! every time I like this channel more! ❤
Kisses from Argentina, Ken 😘
Awesome!
Search for. Ken Tamplin- Livin for my Lord. Awsome!👍🙌
Found this after hearing you sing. Was going to say how great Richie was. He had the power voice. Love ya holding out the mic 😂They did an MTV awards acoustic of Wanted Dead or Alive and when Richie sang he blew JBJ out. It's an amazing vid if you haven't seen it. Your cover was amazing.
Thanks for the kind words, MARYBLEUZ!
I loved Bon Jovi when I was 12. I listened recently some tracks and I was blown away by their songwriting. I looked at wiki who wrote their songs... Shame on me... Lol
Jon and Richie have also written a ton of hits for other people as well.
Diggit. Brilliant analysis. I didn't realize Sambora had such vocal chops. Jeff Beck might have gotten the talk box gimmick from Alvino Rey and his steel guitar. He used to be on "The Lawrence Welk Show."
Thank you Ken for sharing Bon Jovi...cover.
Evan xhylyn Thank you!
Hey Ken. Thanks for the review. Have you listened to "Stranger in This Town" by Ritchie Sambora? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
I would love to see you do a reaction of him singing today. Since 2013, he started loosing his voice. I'd love to hear what you think the issues are.
SMOKING KILLS THERE VOICES
OMG! He had steroids pumped into his voice Box!
I love this tour, I went to two shows and the energy was high and pure fan service in the best way possible. One of them I went with a Bon Jovi critic, and at the “OHOOO” I told him, expect everyone to throw their hands in the air... and on cue 49000 people throw their hands and 1 reluctantly, laughing joined in... and a fan was born. Jon may not have the best vocals, less of all lately, but a live set will always “rock them all”! :)
And YOU,,I must say,,Have a fantastic Voice!
Beautiful!❤❤❤
You are very kind. Thank you.
