- Biology is the study of life-a four-letter word that connects you to 4 billion years worth of family tree. The word “life” can be tricky to define, but a shared set of characteristics helps biologists identify living things. In this episode of Crash Course Biology, you’ll learn how all of life is connected, and why studying biology can help us better understand ourselves and our relationship to all living things.

Very grateful to Dr. Sammy for keeping the Aristotle jokes alive. So excited for this series!!!! -John
hi John
😁😁😁
Y'all have found some amazing hosts over the years and Dr. Sammy is absolutely no exception! I am really looking forward to the rest of Crash Course Biology 2.0 with them!
I'll admit I was slight disappointed when Hank didn't appear, but damn Dr.Sammy absolutely crushed it. Fun, oozing with passion... Good stuff. Look forward to reviewing the wonderful world of biology with you.
YES im so happy that the newer crash course biology is here! Although i do miss hank, this guy teaches really nicely
Used the old Crash Course at the time it came out and was a biology student myself. This new version is refreshing, yet I feel it's more oriented to highschoolers. (which is fine, I will this when teaching) Maybe it's because I'm older, or because this first ep is just introducing biology, I'm curious how it will grow further. So thanks for making a wider oriented version of Crash Course!
I'm loving it, it seems like it's starting a little more "at the bottom" of things, which I think is important in this day and age. So many people have been denied even this most basic introduction to biology, so I'm glad CC is addressing it. Great work as always!
I did too when I was in High School, and next year I will be teaching AP Biology. So many great resources for the next generation of science students!
Bright & Cheery narration style is a hard thing to nail without it being grating and no one did it like Levar Burton, and you have channeled him to near perfection. Great work, man. Never change.
This!

Yes I said the same thing!
I Iiterally just finished Hank's edition of Biology crash course and now I hear there is another 50 episodes?!!
I am here for it❤🤓
I first saw Dr. Sammy on Khan Academy's new Biology course, and now on CC Bio 2.0! This intro is so masterfully crafted and delivered - I can see how you learnt from the best of Crash Course innovations across subjects, and combined it with Dr. Sammy's gift for teaching all things life in his inimitable, engaging style!
This structure of listing out the characteristics of life without sounding like a monotonous textbook - it makes me think a similar format could be followed for a Crash Course Consciousness/Cognitive Science, if you do eventually make it! I do suggest a 50-episode Consciousness over a shorter CogSci series, since it's important to understand it from as many perspectives as possible - global philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, evolution, linguistics, comparative behavioural biology, etc. Also maybe a super-applied Behavioral Science course too, focusing on how psychology-meets-economics-meets-ethics helps us build a better world.
Dr. Sammy is going to be a standout host. Excited for this series, despite (especially because?) the time between now and my last bio quiz can be measured in decades.
Finally a remake of the classical series. I’m really looking forward to all future episodes! Almost got my bachelor’s in biology, so this series will surely come in handy if they go deep enough into detail. Hopes are up! I’m cheering you on Dr. Sammy!
Dr. Sammy is SUCH a favourite science communicator of mine and as much as Hank will be missed, Sammy introduces such a new and engaging style of teaching and I'm SO insanely excited. Got me coming back to crash course for the first time since high school!
What is life? life is pain
Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me
No more
Painnnnnnn 🤌😠
Baby don't hurt me don't hurt me no more...

I personally prefer one of the newer approaches to the whole "are viruses alive" question, viewing the infected cell as the actual organism, and the viral load as the means of reproduction. In this way the virus is more akin to a mote of pollen.
Now PRIONS, THOSE are the TRUE edge case!
Personally my college virology teacher told us to save the question of if viruses are alive for our philosophy classes 😂 Virologists routinely refer to a virus as alive if it is capable of replicating.
Prions and self-replicating RNA/DNA are definitely the edge cases. Viruses I think should be redefined at least as a part of life, if not organisms in their own rights. The definitions of “life” are much like definitions of “species”: sure, they may seem obvious on the surface, and many definitions do align, but there are so many differences and edge cases for each that it may just be better to be as inclusive as possible while noting the intricacies rather than excluding and making half-excuses for why the definition includes this but excludes others.
you can also just think of host cells as the viruses environment, as a chemical system the viruses reliance on the existence of host cells is really no different from our reliance on the existence of an atmosphere or plants reliance on sunlight.
They're also really scary...
I studied biology in university and I am so loving this video! Thank you Crash Course. May you always be successful!
He's a really good pick for this Biology-redux. Think he's one of the most Hank-like presenters so far, which is a compliment to him. ^^ Love his energy. I'll be keeping an eye on this Crash Course session.
The Hank Green CC Biology series is a tough act to follow - but they clearly picked the right person to do so! Great episode, and I'm so looking forward to the rest of the series!
crash course biology helped me out so much in high school. I'm a biology major in college now doing undergrad research this summer and was just joking yesterday about how I may need crash course biology. impeccable timing
It’s so nice to see an updated series! I watched these when I was taking biology in high school. I’ve taken a lot of college biology and ecology classes now, so it’s cool to watch these from a new perspective. (PS: updated, full length ecology series? would love that)
So excited for this series! 💚
I love CrashCourse. It’s a lifesaver for me when I want to revise important concepts quickly. Even though I miss Hank’s narration, the new style is really charming too with the smart puns! Thank you to the entire team for bringing us such high quality content for free! Keep up the good work guys! 😊✨
Hank is a legend, but Sammy is perfect for hosting this topic. Also bless you, Hank.
So excited for this series! I got my bachelors in lit but have been wanting to find free (and intro-level) resources to learn more about science. This is perfect!!!
I’m so looking forward to this whole series, it’s my first Crash Course!
Thank you for remaking this series! I'm about to apply for teacher training specialising in Biology, even though my degree is in Psychology - so it's a perfect refresher that'll get me to where I want to be even faster! Keep up the amazing work, Dr Sammy! :))
The new Botany series and now this! I love the new stuff they are putting out and I'm looking forward to episode 2
Dr Sammy did an incredible job in this video. This made me very excited for the rest of the series
I love the addition of Dr. Sammy, can’t wait to see more episodes!
This is going to be one of the best Crash Course series yet! Cheers to science!👨🔬
This is going to be a great series! Dr. Sammy is a great host!
Thanks!
Very excited for the Biology series update!
waiting 12 years for this
agreed lol
I very much like the definition of life that Hank onces gave in Dear Hank & John, "something is alive when it needs something, and then does something to get it"
This guy sounds like LeVar Burton when he did Reading Rainbow back in the day. Gives me goose bumps!
Love biology, love your voice. I'm so excited for this series.
It seems the question of “What is life?” is very similar to the question “What is free will?”
I'm so pumped for this and botany. Loving getting back into crash course
in my 2nd year of biology at university, this'll be a fun way to refresh my mind on the basics :)
I love your energy, Dr Sammy!
I already want the next episode lol, this introduction got me excited, biology is not my field of study, but I still love to learn about it nonetheless, also, I kinda miss Hank, but this host is awesome and really chill, I'm really excited for this new course!
I am soo thrilled with this first episode! I think they're following a textbook (from openstax?) or just maybe the very beginning of biology. At school, we jump straight to cells and so on, so this was such a nice kickstart. I may not be taking biology(future pharmacy student here), but i sure am gonna love this series and love the subject even more.
Right when i finish my AP Biology class too
Thanks for this great video, Dr. Sammy!
I love this. This is what I got my BA in and love your lecture
I wish there was a way to get notifications just for specific CrashCourse courses like this one
I love that you mentioned the connection to the reset of the universe! I like to think that everything is the hydrogen atoms from the beginning of the universe, fusing into heavier elements, and temporarily wearing different forms as time goes by.
What is life? Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me
He did not answer. Really.
, no more.
Amazing stuff. Looking Forward to the next lessons!!
Wow! I love this. Thank you Dr Sammy
Nice! A 2nd Crash Course Biology Series!! Great idea!!!
New crash course bio nice. Interested to see what we have to learn.
Could you please provide closed captioning for this course? It would help a lot of people, especially when captioning allows people to watch the videos at a lower volume.
Brooo I’m so excited for this series!!!
this is how i cram for my bio midterm
The bee in the end is so cute.
Been waiting my whole life for this.
my favourite subject in middle school waaaaay back when ... 🌱
AMAIZING! Thank you so much!!!
So well presented looking forward to this thank you 😊
Nice I was just looking for a basic biology refresher because I’m going into university for it so this is good timing
Oh finally, I love this, no voice fry, but still fresh, cool and modern. Thank you
this was such a great intro video!
FINALLY!!!! Excited for this one. ☺
One of the most convincing arguments to me for viruses being "alive" is considering the virus particle itself as being only one phase of the organism's life-cycle. Like, the virus particle is effectively a spore from a fungus which can't do anything on its own, but needs to land in a suitable environment (like a living cell) in order to grow to maturity. The implication of that is that the true "adult" form of a virus is just an infected host cell, which has almost no other function than to reproduce.
I'm obsessed with this
very excited for this series!
it's here!! it's finally here
Ok really digging Doc Sammy's presentation
i have learned a lot. thank you
NEW CRASH COURSE? LETS GO!
Damn dude came out swinging- not since Phil Plait (imho) has their been a host on Crash Course who just oozed charisma from the word go, I am so psyched!
This is a very informative video for educational purposes
I'm a big fan of host Dr Sammy!
Not gonna lie, I thought they already did a biology course. But I’m looking forward to this one!
They did. This is a remake because Bio was one of the very first courses they did so long ago
they did
I recently got interested in fungi and thought it would be cool to see some other Biology videos. I remembered I used to watch CrashCourse ages ago and thought there must be a CrashCourse on Biology too so I looked it up and saw this was uploaded 1 day ago!!!!? What a crazy coincidence. The only downer is that I can't binge watch it because the next episodes aren't out yet >.< Really looking forward to this series!
Guy gave me Levar Burton vibes. Excellent
it was so interesting to see both this video and the one in spanish. I love that you're doing that, i can now show it to my nephews
Dr. Sammy is giving me serious LaVar Burton on Reading Rainbow vibes, his voice and his enthusiasm. I'm here for it.
Life is the most amazing thing that happened in the universe.
I like the NASA definition of life, keeping it simple is the way to go.
This is going to save so many people in AP Bio
Genuinely thought/hoped this was voiced by Levar Burton at first, while not watching the video. Am disappointed it isn't, but Dr. Sammy does an excellent job and I love his energy!
So excited for this series! Love the way you teach Dr.Sammy!!
Hehe this has me excited for learning and im not even in school 🎉
OMG Dr. Sammy is so awesme ❤
I’m very glad this video spent so long on the conversation of viruses as an edge case of life and why that is not entirely the case. There is much debate, and I think a lot of biologists are really just stuck to the traditional definitions of “life” when excluding viruses without having a further thought on it. Sure, they are very different from bacteria and other life, but there is no objective reason why we should exclude them when they are so much more like life than they are like a mote of dust. I hope to see that further explored (as well as self-replicating molecules like prions, RNA, and DNA) in the future of the field rather than just coming up with more and more intricate excuses on why we should continue excluding them from the definition of life.
4:24 "Fourth!" Lol I love this guy
wish this came out a year earlier... love dr sammy
This is good timing for me
This video makes a lot of fun
This guy sounds so much like LeVar Burton, I honestly wondered for a minute. Awesome stuff.
Dude this might be of topic but you have great hair.
@CrashCourse I used to watch all you videos and I love it, CAN YOU PLS MAKE VIDEO ON NEUROMORPHIC COMPUTING.😃
You're starting this days before my A-level biology exams. 😂😭
Here for the new generation of Crash Course Biology
He's good, but i don't think anyone can beat Hank💚
i got so confused why theyre doing biology #1 when they already did until i realized im thinkning of pbs lol. funny how both decided to tackle biology almost at the same time. so glad they covered different stuff too
OH YEAH! LIFE BAY-BEE!!! PUMPED FOR MORE BIOLOGY
I've been trying to decide whether or not to go to college for a degree in biology and then this crash course starts. I might do it 🤔
the timing is wild.
I am glad that he's rebooting biology.
pmsl at the Barry White part. love how this is presented - really interesting. I'm starting a Biology degree at 35 y/o in sept and am trying to soak up all the possible information I can before then :)
