2020 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali Duramax Diesel MPG Test, Review

- Heavy-duty trucks like the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500 have always benefitted from diesel engines, for better duramax diesel mpg, however, those engines aren't always the most fuel efficient when not towing and compared to the pre-def or deleted diesel trucks. In this review, we take the Sierra 3500 and its Duramax diesel on a road trip to see what kind of mpg we can get. Plus, we compare this to pre-def diesels. The results are interesting.

Beautiful Sunset, and Truck too!
Beautiful video! I subscribed!! I've been on the fence about getting a 3500 Denali long bed diesel, but now I think I will.
Great review. I like the added information from Fuelly. It really helps put things in perspective on the mileage point. As for people complaining about not high enough mpg gains, remember that the newer trucks also weight a lot more than what they did ten years ago.
Great point on the weight!
Thank you for your review. You have earned my sub. Love your content. Hope your channel continues to grow. You answered more questions than I could have imagined. I will be buying this same vehicle near the end of the year. Keep them coming.
Thanks!
I just found your channel and I am impressed! Very good review and practical
Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed the review! Awesome
Love the new logos and header on your channel! Familiar yet streamlined.
Thanks Gene. Worked my butt off on those!
@@Pickuptrucktalk It shows.
I have a 2018 GMC Base Model. Recent trip from Charleston SC to Bradenton FL w/ Hwy speeds 65-75 mph, unloaded, single rear wheels. Stock w/ no emission delete or programmer. Do have a Banks rear diff cover w/ AMSOIL Severe Gear 75w -90 in it. Topped off fuel tank and showed I got 20 MPG!
Nice review,,👍👍
Bad ass truck I’ll drive anywhere with it road trips yesirr
I feel like despite the high price tag, the capabilities on these newer Duramax diesels in the last decade combined with their longevity (I’d assume most drivers will get a good 20-30 years and/or 500k miles with regular maintenance & care if they don’t trade-in) still make them a pretty solid bet for anyone that needs a rig to do pretty much everything well for the family. Just as you said in this vid, if you’re going to spend literally years of your life inside a vehicle, increasing the trim level and overall creature comforts/general aesthetics is hardly a poor place to skimp.
The GMC Sierra is gorgeous and looks 1000x better than the Silverado HD
I agree!
I think the Silverado looks cool too...
I wish more truck companies would design more trucks like this!!
That gas station had wayyyyyyy to many anti-theft stickers on that pump.
5 years ago diesel trucks had 850 - 900ft lbs of torque or close. 20 years ago they had 500ft lbs of torque. I test drove the 2020 GMC 2500 6.6 gas truck and really liked it. But I also test drove the 2020 Ford F-250. I liked that truck too.
Hard to find a truly bad truck these days.
Yeah if they keep this rate up on torque gaining, we'll be at least 2000ft of torque on HD pickups in the next 10 years, surpassing all the semi trucks that have 1500-2000ft of torque!🤣
The new hummer has 11,000ft of torque! But I wouldn't trust batteries to do well hauling 80,000lbs, 30,000lbs, or even 5,000lbs. What's the torque on the hummer supposed to do? Make it climb a 90 degree vertical wall??😂
I remember when I rented a 2015 F-350 DRW (brand new at the time, truck only had 70 miles on it when i got it). Did a 1400 mile round trip to pick up a new car. Towed an open trailer (with half height front wind/rock shield) and got 15mpg going down empty, and surprise surprise got 15mpg coming back with a Ford Focus in tow. Love diesels for that as they just dont care about small loads.
Same thing happened to me with my little trailer too! LOL
Focus. Yup. I'm sure the truck was like that still back there? The fuck us with the cute little blue ovel in the center.
Calibrasken. Great vids...from Oshkosh and Torrington..
What a beauty!!!
FYI - it is a Federal law that deleting a diesel is illegal. Please be smart with your comments. :) If you want to hear more about how far diesel tech has come, check out this video: czcams.com/video/6aP36lSQokA/video.html
I don't know about where you live, but where I'm from here in texas, nearly every single deisel truck you see is deleted. Very rarely see a brand new truck that's quiet. No one seems to care about it at all. Not even DOT. But I would agree it's no big deal, as long as you're not rolling coal, which even a deleted truck won't do easily, unless its modified to roll coal.
What do you think about semi trucks drag racing, and tractor pulling events. Love them or hate them? I'm very curious!
Also all the trains around here still smoke as well. It's always BNSF trains. Why aren't they on DEF fluids?? I personally don't even care about deisel smoke, but yet I still see all the trains run by the one of the biggest railroad companies in the world smoke while that's apparently "a felony and illegal"! What's going on here??🤔
Hey look I can reply to you here in my inbox Tim!🤣 for some weird reason these comments aren't under the video on my phone!
Sorry Tim, I'm wasn't try to call you a liar! Lol. CZcams just needs some updates or something so we know what's going on!😂
6:26 - That are calculatet 45 Eurocents for one liter (0,2 US gallons) Diesel. That'S a steal! Here in Austria we currently have to pay ~1,20 Euro (1,45 Dollar) for one liter...
Old video but it would be interesting if we could know what mileage per gallon would be if the engine made the same amount of power.
The fact that mileage is increased by ~10% with a heavier vehicle and a ~50% increase in torque numbers says to me the engine has increased efficiency a lot more than what seems at first glance
MPG has a lot less to do with just the engine. Transmission, curb weight play a big role in MPG.
I feel like GMC should've added the AT4 package to the Dually because that would've been the coolest Dually from GMC
Tim, what do you think about Ford cancelling their Lincoln electric SUV collaboration with Rivian? Thoughts? What about the leaked images of the Ford "Maverick" small pickup truck, that was supposedly the "Courier"? Thoughts?
Have a 20 Duramax 2500 crew longbed...Gets 18.5 mpg driving regularly on the highway. East coast highways so that includes mountainous driving. Truck is a rocket and does not feel like your driving at the speed your at. 80 feels like nothing.
Where were those beautiful vistas filmed? There was a stretch with a fifth wheel along a river canyon? Lovely, would love to know where it was shot?
Idaho. We were on the other side of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
@@PickuptrucktalkSo this is in the Driggs area? Just stunning!
@@ultradaves Yup.
In regards to your question of capabilities vs amenities, while I see the point, the manufacture (of all brands) have already addressed that. Capabilities are the realm the WT and SLE or LT trims. The lower trims have (typically) higher payload and higher tow ratings. There isn't a construction company around that is going to buy Denali's for their fleet rigs, Foreman or owners perk, sure, but not for the fleet. Denali's, Platinum's, and Longhorn Limited's exist for primarily retirees that want a Cadillac that can tow a fifth wheel. As that market grew, people like myself have been able to buy the truck we want/need that will get the jobs we need to do as homeowners, boaters, outdoors-men, etc while still having a good and pleasurable daily commute with a sunroof, heated steering wheel, and any other number of creature comforts.
I think you nailed it. The market has certainly changed as have the consumer base for these trucks. Many commercial buyers are upset at what happened to their trucks, however, you can't blame automakers for creating products to meet demand that also drive more profit.
Concern is the longevity with all the new emissions.
I’m
Remember way beck when Diesel was under $2.50 a gallon. A year and a half ago.
That view was beautiful. Towing that trailer, lookout TFL and there Ike Gauntlet towing challenge there is a new guy on the block
😂 yeah right.
We don't have too many sunsets like that in SoCal.
Hi Tim, I own an "02 Sierra HD Duramax C C long bed 4x4 and it's been great. Never less than 18.5 mpg ( I baby it). My concern with the new rigs is the electronics. I just don't have confidence in them long term. My truck's digital compass/thermometer lasted maybe 3 years. What happens after your warranty ends and your dash goes blank. What's that going to cost?
That's a good question and why I own a '62 C10. :) I share your concerns. However, the new trucks are really something.
The new trucks are reliable and nothing like the 2002. GM improved the frame in 2011 and again in 2020 to make the truck tougher yet more refined.
I bought diesel at Kroger today, with my 1$ off discount I paid .89 cents a gallon.
Wow!
I live in Gering, NE what were you doing around here? Our sunsets are the best.
I live in Gering as well. Howdy neighbor! LOL. This is outside my house. Stop by sometime.
Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk will do! I’d like to see the pickup in person. I’m thinking of trading my 16 denali for a 2020 dually
Do a review of your '62 C/10!
Coming! Waiting on a new dash.
How the hell did the box of a S10 out survive the rest of the truck?
Hard to believe what you get for $80,000.00 I think all the MFGs are crazy.
I do like the 6.6 its quiet and it pulls real hard.
I have spent time behind the wheel of both the GM Duramax and the Ford Power Stroke. The GM defiantly drives with less input and less wandering on the highway. I found the Ford Platium Power Stroke wandered constantly.
The Duramax was quieter also.
The Ford was constantly in the shop for warranty work.
You think gmc will offer the multi pro tailgate on lower trims eventually? That SLT is way too rich for my budget
You could always talk with the dealer. They'll order the tailgate and install it
Yes, it will come down to lower trims eventually.
Thank you for your input 🥃
Where did get gas? It says pre pay after dark. Nobody does gas up before pay up here.
Here in my town. We are a small community and things are different around here.
cool
How can you delete the DEF fluid
In the army, we used diesel to wash our hands.
Lol
Scottsbluff is an awesome place
What axle?
$2.52 for diesel two years ago........
Now it's $5.52........
Wow😂
👍👍👍👍👍
I'm die hard gm. Especially Chevy. Owning a couple of them I understand y it's said but the shop time on them. Is GMC any better? I floating around a ram 3500.but the price. Holly shit. I'm trying to be self employed so it be a write off, but maybe GMC could meet in the middle as far as luxury and price.
Buy a ram if you want a rust bucket with a nice interior lol
I have one in order Chevrolet
My gosh! What in gods name were you thinking??! ? Totally over working that truck towing that huge red trailer! I doubt the manufacturers will ever give you another truck for abusing that poor dually! In all seriousness, a Prius could tow that!
I know. It’s the last day you had the truck! 👍😀
That's not a Denali Ultimate. It is a Denali but he probably mispoke. The ultimate only comes in the brown colored interior.
Does anyone know the MPG difference between the gas vs. diesel model?
Depends on what you are doing. IMO - gas is 18-20 unloaded, 8-10 loaded. Diesel is 16-18 loaded, 10-12 loaded. It all depends on how you drive and how much you are towing.
Where are you at in western nebraska?
Gering
@@Pickuptrucktalk 😎 i have some family there.
Any other countries require a DEF system? Is DEF exclusive to the United States?
Yep. Here’s a link to Europe. Trains are using it as well. www.acea.be/industry-topics/tag/category/diesel-exhaust-fluid-adblue
Europe might have been ahead of the US in using DEF.
Canada has it. Emissions testing depends on the province you live in or if you have farm plates.
A simple answer would have been nice.
Tim, many outlet reporting that vehicle sales will fall approximately 80% for the month of April. JD Power said, going into April, the research firm warned U.S. sales could plunge by 80 percent for the month. The numbers were off a more modest by mid-month, though still substantial - 45 percent. One reason: record incentives that have been averaging around $4,800 a vehicle over the past month and as much as $7,300 on full-size pickups. Tellingly, nearly one in four buyers opted for the 84-month, zero-interest loans that are becoming commonplace. Thoughts? Ford is also projecting a $5 billion dollar operating loss for Q2. Double what analysts expected only a few days ago. Thoughts?
It’s really tough for everyone would be my thoughts. My revenue is down 60 percent last month. Frankly, I’m seeing a slight uptick for the last week and hoping for a bigger 3rd and 4th quarter. I think the automakers are hoping for the same. The 2nd quarter is going to be miserable for many business throughout this country.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Now it the time to buy stocks. Hope you're diversifying and not relying solely on this.
36 gallon tank is way too small. The F350 and the F450 have a 48 on the long bed. Towing my heavy 5th wheel I would be stopping every 300 miles or less.
Chevrolet 45,000.
Why did you delete your own comment that was posted on top Tim?🤣
I did?
Just a couple of days ago I asked a few questions under that comment. The comment you made about how deleting a deisel is a felony. After I came back to this video a day or two later to see if you responded yet, that comment is nowhere to be seen on my phone. And it still isn't.
@@lancehartman9905 It is still there. I did change it from felony to simply illegal. Every state and situation is different on that.
BTW, trains are starting to use DEF. Here is an article from back in 2016 with the UP rail line starting to use it.
I'm in western NE. I was out all weekend and didn't respond until now. Sorry.

@@Pickuptrucktalk that's really odd! I just realized that your comment I was talking about is in my inbox on CZcams, but it still dont show it under the video. CZcams might need a little update or something!😂
@@PickuptrucktalkThat's ok! That makes more sense on trains now!
Tundra who?
How Are you gonna compare a half ton gasser to a diesel? The tundra itself is a beast in its class .
Not an Ultimate..
Imagine if you have a hitch like anybody would have and you do that stupid thing with the tailgate step 😳😐😖😬
GMC needs to design the next front end of the Chevy HD. This thing is awesome, and the Chevy is just absolutely hideous. I'd rather be seen driving a Prius than the new Chevy HD!
Interesting that exterior style plays such a large role in your decision to drive something.
@Roscoe Dogg Especially when you can get a similarly equipped GMC for roughly the same price, given how expensive these things are now. Personally, the decision is a no brainer, but to each his own I guess!
Can't say I'd go that low. Prius? Shame on you. Lol. Oh well. Let me know how my tire feels and tastes.
@@ALMX5DP It obviously does for most people, otherwise automakers wouldn't bother and everything would look like a mail truck.
TUNDRA
Damn. I thought only dumb ass ford had the handle.
Good video. Bad truck. The massive badges in the middle of the tailgate are just stupid.
The badges are what makes it bad?
I agree badges are just an opinion, love it, hate it, what ever! What you should hate this for is the turning radius. Ford will literally do circles around this.
@@ALMX5DP Yup :)
