      I think the moment his resolve solidifies is when Begbie responds to his meek compliance in being ordered around like a lackey with blowing smoke in his face. Compared to the rest it's small, but it's such an intensely petty cunt move that completely snaps the tie of friendship that would keep Renton from betraying a "mate" .It's also when the song overlaying his flight pointedly kicks in.
      It also occurs to me how similar this is to a previous incident with Begbie that Tommy describes to Renton. Tommy shrugged it off and stuck by him because "he's a mate", but look where Tommy ended up sticking with the horrible people he called friends. It's probably what's going through his head as he lies awake in bed before taking the money.

      i don't think so .I n the scene where he has to try the heroin before selling you can hear his dialogue which is obviously him wanting to take the money.

      @@Zlarel funny you say that, because that very quote from Tommy has always stuck with me as something missing in so many people, who won't stand by their "mates" even for the pettiest of reasons. I've never read the book, but the film really makes Tommy into an almost Christ-like figure. He is honest, he is kind, he's generous with his time and possessions, he openly associates with people who are pretty vile, but never becomes like them himself. His attitude towards the utterly undeserving Begbie is one of forgiveness and forbearance. He isn't into hard drugs at all until his heart and spirit are smashed to bits by his bad breakup. The fact that he immediately gets HIV.and dies so quickly whilst Spud, Renton and Sick Boy all end up clean, is almost like him dying for their sins. Even the soldier song that Spud sings when they all gather after Tommy's funeral reinforces his essential innocence.

      @Jack Burton what gay for thinking that acts of extreme violence isn't funny.... you ever seen someone get glassed before mate? Of someone get stabbed? Or had their head stamped on? I've seen all that. Sometimes to mates. And I can tell you there isn't anything funny or nice about it. I'm not saying there aren't certain situations where a bit of violence is needed but 9 out 10 times in the pubs and all that when these things happen it's over fuck all. Needless and pointless extreme violence that leaves people scarred and fucked up for the rest of their lives. Have a good evening. Cheers

      @Jack Burton for sure mate. I remember one night being out in Beckenham. Outside this Irish chain pub called O'Neils (dunno if you're from the UK or not but in America i know they got the same sort of places) and I'm out the front with the missus. This dude is standing next to me and I can hear in his accent that he's a traveller (what we call the gypsies round our way- the Irish lot that move around in caravans. If u know what I mean then apologies) and all of a sudden these two guys come out of no where with a hammer and a bottle and go to work on him. Mate it was one of the most vicious things I've seen in the flesh. There was bouncers there but they didn't want nothing to do with it. They were stamping on this guys head and all u could hear was birds screaming. When they left this dudes head was twice the size it was before. And his mates pulled him up and dragged him off looking for the cunts. How he wasn't in a coma I'll never know. Anyway after that me and my bird went home. I just felt weird afterwards because it was so fkn savage. It just ruined the night. But yeah senseless violence mate. There's no need for it. He could have died then they are up on a murder charge

    Great foreshadowing with Renton looking coldly at sickboy after the latter casually admits that he would run out on a mate. That and when he stares at the bag after Begbie calls him down. I would love Begbie to come across Bex Bissell in a London pub. Or the Yeti.
    Now that would be explosive. One gets glassed, and in retaliation the other gets a razor blade smile.

    Yeah I've read the book too and I'm aware it's based in Edinburgh. It's - here comes the big cliche - much better than the film although the film was great. I especially liked the way Spud thought and talked with the "Cat man" stuff he said. And Renton with his brothers wife... wow... just wow. I gotta read Porno now.
    The reason I said Glasgow is that was just the only big city in Scotland I've lived in and in Glasgow there are a LOT of people just like him.

    There's exactly nothing the man could have done to avoid a "fight" with Begbie. Perhaps, he could have attacked him first, but that would have resulted in charges for him. Difficult situation. Alternately, his friends could have attacked Begbie after the initial glassing. Other than that, I don't see a legal way around it and even then, most of the damage is done.

    The most unbeleivable thing i always thought trainspotting had was how much do people actually let Begbie get away with. If he tried to do the same number in eastern europe he would be chopped in four and scattered in different sewers, somewhere around 2nd or 3rd attempt

    • @Jacksonrox13
      @Jacksonrox13 Před rokem +1

      If you read the books, it goes into a bit more details on how he only "fights"/picks on people much weaker than him, along with beating women too. Begbie may be a psychopath, but he's an absolute coward at the end of the day.
      In the prequel book to "Trainspotting", he accidentally impregnates this one woman and instead of taking responsibility for it and staying as a father, he just fucks off and leaves her. When one of her two brothers finds out about it and talks about how he wants to get revenge for his sister, Begbie sneaks up to their house when they're not looking and smashes the man's face in with a bit of rebar, breaking his jaw and permanently disfiguring his face. I think he also goes after the other brother who doesn't even want anything to do with it, but I'm not too sure. He also impregnates another woman in the original novel and when confronted about it by his partner, beats her up.

    All of them except spot deserve that. I was glad he left him some money because he acknowledged that Spud had never done anything to anyone. In other words he was saying Spud had never fucked anyone over. This kind of reminds me of how I ended up getting clean and sober 9 years ago. I realized that I was hanging out with some fucked-up people and I was fucking my life up and I wanted to do better than that. I didn't want to die like that.
