Spotify is going to offer Hifi tier in a few months.
I heard about that today, curious about it for sure. But I am very happy with Tidal.
Very good review and you explained it extremely well. Now, if I only had all 'that' gear. Oh, but that's another year. I guess I better hurry!! :-)
I completely agree with your assessment. I've tried them all, and Tidal takes the crown.
Awesomeness. It seems lately that we are a dying breed with all the push by big name reviewer channels to use Qobuz. Honestly I don't understand their reasoning or what they think they are hearing as Qobuz just doesn't sound natural and accurate to my ears.
@@TheHonestAudiophile absolutely - I liked Qobuz more than Deezer, but it isn't close to Tidal, in my opinion. Qobuz certainly sounds "enhanced", for lack of a better word.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing all of this info with us!
Any time! My pleasure, you are welcome.
About the deezer comment being more narrow, I find it is the most identical sounding to my jriver playing my own flac files. Tidal does sound wider and different especially when playing mqa but whether it is a better sound or not is probably dependent on personal taste. I like the Tidal sound as well but sometimes with music that I am so familiar with, I go for Deezer.
I was talking about Deezer hifi by the way with all the options set to high fidelity. I am using an ifi zen signature stack.
Thank you. Very useful insight on all of these programs!
My pleasure, you're welcome 😊
Thanks very much for your help and input!!
My pleasure, you're welcome.
I am still with Tidal Dave. Now there is sample rate and bitrate. The sound of Tidal is simply fantastic, full, natural. My friends and girlfriend also have Tidal. You are right in all expressions about Tidal..
Glad you enjoy Tidal.
I went back to Tidal as well but still use Amazon Music as well.
Most listening though is with local files through Audirvana.
@@TheHonestAudiophileGreat. I also love Amazon music.
Interestingly, my approach is rather different. I personally can't tell a whole lot of difference between some of the services, but my understanding is that Tidal pays artists a little bit better than the rest, which is why I choose them.
Awesomeness. Yes, Tidal does pay artists more and that's yet another reason why I use the service.
Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.
This is what I needed. Thank you.
You're so welcome!
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Wow, what timing,
I keep hearing this or that audio product shines with high quality hi res tracks. So before making another purchase
of audio gear I jumped in (Amazon HD) and glad I did. I was about to suggest you talk about it in an upcoming review :)
Price to performance is Tital and Qobuz a big step up in sound quality to Amazon HD ?
Thanks
No Amazon is very similar in sound. I recommend using the free trials to compare.
Great review Dave, thank you.
My pleasure, you're welcome.

A bit out if the topic question dave but have you tried the audio test from npr?
Ive did this test some time ago, it showed me uncompressed wav files are better than mp3 counterparts and to test my gears resolution capability. My current best gear could only discern the 4 out of 6 sample songs, im curious if you can get it all right.
I just did this test, have done it before awhile back, I got 4 of 6 using my Nextdrive Spectra x and ADV M5-12D with my Samsung Note 10 Plus.
@@TheHonestAudiophile oh nice, I think only people with very good hearing or have the most revealing setup can get 6/6, the mozart and theres a world samples were so hard for me to correctly guess, the lack of treble detail on those clips makes it impossible since the mp3 compression doesnt affect it much.
Those are the same I missed.
@the Honest Audiophile, Hi. Just noticed on your CZcams page: Is it a TorAudio HP amplifier I can see in there?
Searching for Tor Audio on your channel, I can't find any. Just curiosous.
Thank you.
Yes, it is. Good eyes :) A review of the Tor Audio Roger will be out soon :) Thank you for checking out my channel, commenting and subscribing 💓
@@TheHonestAudiophile , I'll be looking for your take on the Tor Audio Roger. I've been entertaining the idea of going for the fully balanced model. Please let us know what you thing about your Roger. Thanks

I would really like to get into that happy space and dissappear 😢. Great video, thank you.
My pleasure, you're welcome.
In Australia I had only one service for ‘HiFi’ streaming and that’s Tidal. I am extremely happy with its quality, so I’m lucky in that regard.
One thing that rarely gets mentioned is that on Android I can not use the Tidal app with any USB Dongle, such as my Dragonfly Black, which means to decode MQA I’m forced to use third-party apps and only via streaming as it’s not possible to play cached or downloaded tracks because only the native Tidal app is allowed do this.
This is not the case on iOS but I have found the Lightning connectors dongles, required to connect USB DACs to the iPhone, to be subject to breakage after just a couple of weeks of use (both the smaller official Apple dongles, gone through three of these and the many knock-offs on Amazon, eBay and Ali). Very frustrating.
I use the Tidal app all the time with dongles and my Samsung Note 10 Plus with no issues at all.
@@TheHonestAudiophile
I should clarify. I too can use my USB Dongle on my Oppo A72 (it suppose to have HiRes certification via it’s built in headphone socket but I’m unable to tell if Tidal uses it, anyway I digress).
The problem is that the DAC gets its digital audio stream via the Android sound system, which resamples all audio to 48 kHz, 16 bits, therefore there is no way to decode the MQA Master tracks because they all see this resampled data instead.
That is why apps like USB Audio Player Pro are required if you want the full Tidal experience on a standard Android phone, minus the caching and offline play.
If I use my Dragonfly Black with the Tidal App on Android I get a lovely blue dragonfly, telling me it receiving a 48 kHz stream and this never changes even when playing a Master track.
Tidal on iOS just works and you get the best audio decoding that your DAC is capable of. Either the first software unfold or the full MQA for DACs that can handle it
On iOS, my Dragonfly Black shows green (44.1) or very rarely blue (48) for standard CD quality tracks but Master tracks turn magenta (MQA) telling me it’s decoding a genuine MQA stream.
The upshot is that unless the Android phone has been engineered to send Tidal’s data to the USB DAC bit-perfect, no Android owner can ever play any Tidal track without the Android system intercepting and altering the audio data. I think that’s a pretty major issue that gets swept under the rug with the statement: “Oh! You’ve got to use USB Audio Player Pro if you want MQA.” Even AudioQuest tells owners of its Dragonfly series of DACs to use UAP. Ugh.
@@TheHonestAudiophile
Oh. I love your reviews. I always watch yours these days because I’ve been burnt but stuff some of the other high profile reviewers raved about. I think I’ve learnt my lesson on making my own mind up before spending hard earned dollars.
I am not concerned with MQA quality when using my phone and a dongle. I have a desktop setup for that.
Awesomeness. I am glad you find the channel helpful. Good decisions are hard to make without wise council. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Very good topic, specially from You Dave, the best reviewer on CZcams. In my opinion, based on 2 year user experience I am most satisfied with Spotify. Second to it is Tidal. From my equipment that I use, some tube some solid state headphone smps, few different DACs and 5 good headphones both sennheiser, hifiman and Beyerdynamic what I hear in Tidal siund is as it is heavily processed, the liveliness suppressed, the bass slightly bloated, warmed so the sound overall is as yiu listen in a overly damped room, no natural decay or airiness. Secon thing is the search, try Chris Jones, the guitar player who's recordings at Stockfish records are very audiophile and you get at least 3 different artists but all piled together.?? Sometimes you don't see an album from desired artist in the list of all alvums but then you find the album in an album titels list?? So, Spotify has a better catalogue in my experience and sound which is more natural albeit obviously not perfect even compared from Spotify Premier to Tidal HiFi and Master quality. Regards
Thank you for the kind words, greatly appreciated 🥰
I may have missed it in the video, but does your review refer to Tidal Premium or Tidal Hifi?
I use the Tidal Hifi family plan.
I agree, it's not talked about, but now we are hearing the same rumors ppl were saying about tidal, which seems lame to me, regarding tidal, cuz it was better than Amazon imo; but that qobuz actually enhances the upper frequencies. Hence, the possibility of the harsh stuff you heard, and others have stated this as well..
Interesting information, wasn't aware but if that is true that could be a reason why . Curious if there is any written confirmation from any of the services stating that they enhance or not.
Nice review. I don't really hear the Qobuz "sheen", but I need to listen closer. I wonder if it's because I listen to Tidal and Qobuz via Roon. I have become thoroughly addicted to Roon and its music discovery. And having both Tidal and Qobuz in Roon gives nice flexibility and options.
Yeah Roon is a nice program. I use Audirvana and am very happy with it.
Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing.
Tidal and Audirvana is the way forward
Is using the tidal app by itself good enough or should I listen through a 3rd party app? I currently use soundcore q45 headphones with LDAC. I know wireless isn't the best but I do hear a big difference between tidal and youtube music
I don't use Bluetooth much at all. To be honest, I don't mess with the different codecs when I do use Bluetooth.
As for a 3rd party app, I use USB Audio Player aka UAPP when using Tidal with a wired IEM.
Just a quick question in regards to using FLAC, I tend to use FLAC and 24/16-bit WAV, and usually when offered a choice to download I choose WAV. Apart from space, is there any reason you choose FLAC over WAV?
Also, are you able to discern a difference between the sound of Tidal vs say a FLAC or WAV or DSD File you bought from Bandcamp or another source? Or even a CD rip?
@donotseemecricket FLAC is the compressed file version of a WAV file and they contain the same file bits and sound the same, FLAC takes up less storage. In theory you could convert WAV to FLAC and back to WAV and not hear a difference. The sonic difference lies in the bit rates, how it was originally recorded and how it is upsampled and played back.
Yes I do hear sonic differences in files from my PC and on Tidal. But I will not say that they're massive differences on every track but more subtle differences.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thank you for the informative response! That is what I believed to be the case when it came to FLAC vs WAV. Only reason I tend to download WAV or rip my CDs to WAV is because I still use iTunes and it's more universal. I haven't looked into DSD yet, not sure about it at all really. In regards to the differences between Tidal and your own files, would you say that the differences are more subtle than the differences between Tidal and Quboz?
I prefer Tidal and local files. Qobuz adds a weird sheen to the music.
have you integrated tidal with roon? thoughts on the newly announced Spotify Hifi?
I use Audirvana with Tidal. Spotify Hifi will be interesting to see what bitrate they go with along with price increase. Could be another solid option.
One difference between Roon and Audirvana is that when your in Roon, if you add to playlists, it’s local, meaning you can only add to playlists within Roon even if using tidal within Roon.
With Audirvana, when you add to a playlist in Audirvana, it adds to the playlists back in tidal. That’s a massive plus for me
My current issue is finding a good companion to my arcam 240 poweramp and monitor studio gx200 gold speakers. The arcam st60 (as a preamp) would be the obvious choice but i hear mixed stories about the software, app etc. But this seems to be the main gripe with many brands....
The Arcam is currently on a marantz av8003 which is getting old, lol.
Anyone any ideas? :-)
You can use software like Audirvana or Roon to bypass the Tidal app, if that is what you are referring to. I use Audirvana in bit perfect mode.
@@TheHonestAudiophile hi, that was quick:). Ye the issue with the Arcam is that its not roon certified etc. I am actually considering getting a 'regular' preamp with build in dac, or a seperate dac. Though that is new territory for me and a lot more money. Then look at a bluesound node perhaps.
Musical fidelity has a good looking preamp ;) Musical Fidelity M6s PRE Preamplifier and a dac, combined they are 3200 euro though..... ouch.
So much choice lol
@@CyberBeep_kenshi sounds like a lot of research is ahead for you. I am not a good source for speakers and all that your considering. I recommend you reach out to inToit Reviews as he is more knowledgeable in this regard.
czcams.com/channels/DhV3KByLSY2roqZ2aQ0XKg.html
@@TheHonestAudiophile cheers! Ye it's a lot, if only arcam would make a pre with dac lol. Current idea is get a bluesound node 2i with tidal. Hook it up to the marantz and go from there. In any case, good chat:)
@@CyberBeep_kenshi I look forward to hearing your thoughts and impressions.
Hmmm, interesting
I have a totally opposite experience when it comes to sound quality, Q is always fuller sound, just better I think you like your mytek liberty Dac. What is your source?
We all hear differently. I use a Mytek Liberty and a Soekris DAC1421 going into either a SPL Phonitor SE or Tor Audio Roger as mentioned in the video.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you for replying, I was asking for your audio source, thanks
So my audio chain PC/Audirvana/Tidal/Mytek Liberty/SPL Phonitor SE or PC/Audirvana/Tidal/Soekris DAC1421/Tor Audio Roger or I use either the Mytek Liberty or Soekris DAC1421 headphone outputs. On portable Samsung Note 10 Plus to various dongles but mainly I use the Nextdrive Spectra X. My DAP are the Sony NW-A105 Walkman and a Pioneer XDP-30r.
All of this was listed in the video.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you, I'm interested in your PC, is something made for audio? Working on my source, wanted to get it right the first time thanks
My PC is nothing special, a MSI Cubi N 8 GL Mini Desktop PC (Intel Quad Core N5000, 16GB RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD + 1TB HDD, Windows 10 Pro) - Tiny Professional Fan-Less Portable, Seriously that is my PC. It is the size of a Moondrop SSR box lol.
I use Audirvana to work around all the hangups with PC. Check out this video from PS Audio czcams.com/video/AqC1qmdmGlk/video.html Paul talks specific about Audirvana. Here is a link to Audirvana website audirvana.com/
I've been watching your videos for a long time now and appreciate your perspective. Just a friendly critique if you don't mind... I think you should work a bit on your presentation for some of these videos, it really sounds like you are struggling through some of the points you are trying to make, sometimes it almost looks painful, and you seem a bit frustrated, lol. Like when you burp in your mouth while your talking...hahaha. You need to do some editing my friend, you really do. Anyway...just some thoughts from a random person on the internet, hopefully you take them as constructive criticism, wish you success with the channel.
Thank you for your feedback.
I have said from the beginning, no editing allowed. I wanted to start a vlog style audio review channel that was basic and simple but helpful. I do not use many notes or scripts as I have stated from the beginning as I want to show the true emotion and raw thoughts. I want a channel that is different but yet quality content not necessarily quality editing and pictures. The majority of my editing is simple stuff for the processing on CZcams. Not everyone is Joshua Valour or DMS3TV quality and I want to be different then the rest. Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing 👍❤
did you try deezer hifi?
Soo... Deezer Hi-Fi sounds worse than Tidal Hi-Fi?.. I mean strictly 16-bit, 44100Hz (1411kbps) on both. Tidal sounds better?
To my ears and on my gear; yes Tidal sounds better.
Unfortunately tidal streams MQA, and if you don't have an mqa dac you get a lower quality. Qobuz if you dont have mqa
I find Tidal sounds better overall, MQA or not.
tidal isn't available in my country and apparently tidal isn't making a lot of money. oh and i'm hoping spotify hifi is gonna be good.
Bummer. I am curious what Spotify hifi will be like for sure, could be interesting.
Spotify is slightly better than Tidal for music discovery (but still pretty bad!). But UI on both is horrendous. Rdio had the best UI & discovery, too bad they killed it!
Thanks for your thoughts. I like Tidal UI, have no complaints. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing 👍
Wow... comparing spotify to tidle right now.
I almost exclusivly listen to metal and some songs sound like crap on spotify compared to tidle. The drums, guitars, vocals... so much more enjoyable.
Im will cancel my spotify abo for sure
Thanks for the vid.✌️
My pleasure, you're welcome. Glad you found the video helpful.
I used tidal when I djing at home
Flac is also compressed and doesn't sound good as wav. Flac is great for metadata though.
flac is not compressed
@@maraboshi its lossless but its compressed, hence the file being half the size of its wav counterpart.
@@maraboshi FLAC is lossless compression, think of FLAC as a .zip file for audio. A media player decodes FLAC files when they are opened which requires more processing power unlike opening a WAV file.
Also, any debate over WAV sounding better than FLAC is a total placebo.
I don't hear any difference from service to service. Especially because lossy formats are perfect and indistiguishable from lossless at 320kbps which many streaming services provide. Well other than Amazon Music non HD which is just crap and you hear the compression.
Spotify Premium only starts rolling off after 20khz which is basically not hearable by most people.
Also Spotify uses a better comrpession format than MP3 and I stop hearing any difference at around 198kbps on MP3. Most other services do it similar.
We all hear differently. Thanks for your thoughts. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing 👍
I was a Tidal subscriber for years but I have changed to Deezer for a couple of months now. To me Deezer just sounds better, more natural, more complete. Completely the opposite from your experience...
I am glad you enjoy Deezer. We all hear differently.
I agree. I find that Deezer sounds superior to the other streaming services. The sound is wide, dynamic, and very enjoyable. Instruments and voices carry “weight” and the bass is very yummy! I do find that Qobuz is my least favorite. Sounds stuffy and boring.
Qobuz is my favorite. Sounds the best IMO
I think Tidal sounds the way you described Qobuz lol
We all hear different, thanks for watching and commenting.
No house music genre? No pre-listening to a track before loading
I know for a FACT that this guy is a Tidal shill.
Nah. I just made that up. He seems to be extremely knowledgeable. Here's the thing. For some reason, CZcams decided to put Josh Valour videos on my homepage. I watched maybe ten hours of his videos, then they started putting DMS videos in my feed. I watched some of them too. Now I've got this guy showing up. Here's the thing. I just spent $700 on hifi headphones and a DAC. I made sure my source files were impeccable. My music and my settings are absolutely unimpeachable. I listened to the experts. I was ready to have my mind blown when I settled in and listened to some music. It didn't happen. There was no "wow moment" whatsoever. It was one of the most anticlimactic experiences of my life. I was about to spend $2300 on some headphones, but then I realized that this all might be a bunch of bull crap. The thing is, I don't think any of these guys (like the host of this video, for example) are lying-- why would they do that? How would they benefit? I believe that THEY BELIEVE what they're saying. I just don't understand what they're hearing that I'm not. Like, honestly, my Meze headphones sound great. But.. so do my AirPods Pro and AirPods Max and Sony noise-canceling headphones. It's just confusing to me. I don't get how I'm missing out on whatever these guys are getting so much pleasure from. Am I alone here? It's genuinely so frustrating. I can't tell if audiophiles are just like the music version of wine snobs (ie "experts" that know all the right things to say about wine when they know what it is but routinely botch blind taste tests) or if there really is some next level of music that I'm unable to unlock. I don't like throwing money away or anything, but the money isn't the issue here. I want to hear this life-enriching sound quality. I'd love to know what I'm doing wrong.
This isn't a super popular channel and this video is from months ago, so I doubt I'll get any kind of meaningful response. This comment is just kind of a frustrated message in a bottle. If anyone reads this and has helpful pointers for me, please, let me know. I'm all ears. Get it?? (I'll show myself out.)
How is your music journey so far? With the right gear and headphones, music just sounds like audio bliss. I didn’t jump into the most expensive as you did. It was a slow progress for many years.
@@Rsalmond83 I forgot about this comment. I just reread it. I was pretty frustrated that day.
My music journey has actually improved since then. I can easily tell the difference between Bluetooth and a wired connection now, for example. I've purchased and returned a number of high end headphones since then. For whatever reason, I don't get a great experience from over-ear headphones. To me, IEMs sound like they've got the best quality. The over-ear headphones I landed on are the Focal model Celestee. The IEMs I've been using are the Moondrop Kato. I realize there's quite a price disparity there, but I like the Katos a lot. I was putting them up against some Campfire Audio Holocene IEMs that cost (much) more than double, but, I swear, the Katos sounded better to me.
I do appreciate you following up with me. Thanks!
I bought soundcore Q45 headphones with LDAC enabled. Tidal sounds much cleaner and can hear more detail. Using Tidal doesn't sound muffled, sounds more open and overall clean
Get to the point already!
Tidal and Qobuz are not free so they loose. End of story
What you said about Deezer is BS
I am glad you enjoy Deezer, we all hear differently.
