i’ve been thinking about quitting cosplay for about 5 years now, but i keep coming back to it. to me it’s just a cycle that keeps repeating over and over. in this video you said that it’s better to do characters that you really like even if they are unpopular and i agree 100% with that. i am also very conscious about environmental issues and i try to buy only secondhand stuff and do not over-consume. but tbh this is exactly the problem for me. i like unpopular, super vintage and old media, which have a very small community online and i could be like the first or a second person to cosplay a character from that fandom when i search it up or make a post. i do a decent job and work on my cosplays a lot, but because the fandom is small i do not get lots of likes/followers etc, which makes me super depressed. when you post cosplay online you cannot just _not_ compare yourself to others and seeing people getting more attention just because they do popular characters cosplay makes me unmotivated. that leads me to a lack of online presence because i get like “what’s the point of making cosplay if nobody wants it anyway?”. then i get into some new unpopular media, have a desire to do a cosplay, the cycle repeats itself. it’s hard for me to find a solution for this, but i keep trying to understand why do i get back to cosplay, what does it give me, is it really important to me or not. thank you for this video! it also helped me to reflect on my own experience.
Cosplay is very hard and expensive. I have been cosplaying since 2021 so 4ish years, and no matter what I do I cannot grow my page. I can’t afford to cosplay anymore especially since I can’t grow my page, it has also gotten to where I wanna quit cosplay.
Honestly, you do cosplay FOR YOURSELF firstly. Secondly, to have fun. lol. Thirdly...I think it would be to make connections and make friends who are in the same mindset/fandom as yourself. Yes, it's very expensive. But, if you love it enough you should do it (just like any artform). I did cosplay back when I was 20. Honestly, I barely dipped my foot in the water and dealt with a lot of drama. lol. Now that I am 36 (older & wiser) I am getting back into it. I can see the toxic things more clearly in myself (and others) and make adjustments if need be. If someone doesn't like my vibe I just move on without a care in the world. Some of the young people in cosplay, I now just see as kids. So if there is any toxicity in how they act I just chock it up to immaturity. lol I guess I was that bad person talking ill of a former friend I knew that ditched us (our original friend group) for fame and fortune to one of my other friends. I honestly saw it that I was just telling a story. I concretely explained to the other person I had no ill will against that person but I just didn't respect the actions they took on our friend group at the time. I don't know if that makes me toxic or not. lol. There is also that cosplayer that killed his cat and abused his girlfriend (I'm not naming names) who quit due to the backlash of a very horrible and true story regarding animal abuse. I don't really see that as talking bad about someone since I would say it to the younger generation as more of a warning. Some of these people worship these people that look good as cosplayers but are horrible people behind closed doors. So does that make a toxic person to warn others that its possible to meet someone like this? lol Let's not forget the weirdos that look good in cosplay and are predatory to minors. I've met plenty of those as well. In short I think it depends on what you are talking "bad" about a certain person. I'm not just going to sit there and be silent about someone that I know is a predator and/or treating other people like shit. I also actively work with police and FBI (as a volunteer tipster) to catch people like this in communities both online and in real life. Anyways, I wrote a book. Scattered but yeah those are my thoughts on this subject. Nice video. lol

Cosplay is more of a creative hobby for me. I don't really care about "accuracy" because it's more fun to take at least some creative liberty/autonomy (I often do genderbends). There's so much to do with your wardrobe; more cost-effective and forces you to be more creative. The only times I buy new cosplays are when I don't already have such staples/components that replicate my desired characters. Even so, I always make sure that the cosplay pieces I buy are at least versatile for any occasion. Labour-wise, it's definitely true for cosplay! Getting into your cosplay alone is already time-consuming (especially the wigs, makeup, outfits), so the additional labour of social media engagement and making things from scratch isn't for me. I'm saying this as a closet cosplayer.
