THE FANTASY ART OF EDMUND DULAC

- A look at the work of one of the Golden Age's greatest illustrators, and the evolution of his stylistic approach during his lifetime. And an eagle-eyed viewer has pointed out there is an error. When mentioning The Rubaiyat I show illustrations from Arabian nights, so for now just ignore it and eventually I'll remake the video and replace the images.
I love Dulac; he's one of those artists whose works I wish I could just walk into.
Hello and what a nice idea - I saw a video of a virtual walk into a Dali painting so I presume somebody could do the same for Dulac and others. That I'd like to see.
I read this in your avatar's voice. 😅
❤️
I’m that way with the art of Maxfield Parrish, Alphonse Mucha, and Malika Favre
hi jane!
Anyone contemplating an arts documentary should use this as a template. The images are presented simply with fine definition. The commentary concise and warmly spoken. The music complimenting the art.Dulac wonderful to see the range and development of his art.Brilliant.
Hello and many thanks for such a glowing review of the channel. The appreciation of viewers is of great importance to me and lets me know I'm not wasting my time.
@@petebeard Very well done, Pete! Looking forward to exploring more of your videos. Rackham next!
Never heard of Edmund Dulac (!) and this was spell-binding for the reasons you give, may I add the pace was a perfect balance of having time to engage each image while encompassing enough to support the narrative.
@@TheJhtlag Hello and many thanks for your positive response to the video. I hope you'll look for others on the channel.
Imagine if he'd given in fully to his parents pressuring him to finish law. These beautiful artworks would never have come to life. Toxic controlling parents, are you taking notes?
Those "desaturated watercolors" really draw me in. Thank you for sharing this wonderful work.
Hello and it's a funny thing with Dulac. He was sort of two for the price of one. But those images for the Poe verses are something to see for sure.
This channel is one of the things from a series called ''How Comes I've Never Been Here Before?'' I am now smugly smiling from ear to ear. I have checked what the rest of the channel looks like. It looks like I've struck the gold here. Wow.

What ethereal art work..so beautiful and detailed.. two world wars sadly interrupted his work.

So many creatives face the same dilemma..still now..the security of a "normal" job as opposed to be an impoverished artist..
Breaking away to follow your heart is difficult..but it has been done many times.
Red wine - addictive, chocolate - addictive, Pete Beard’s videos - addictive…, just a few of the pleasures that I am lucky enough to be able to indulge myself in . Thanks Pete.

Such a great episode, and an illustrator dear to my heart. I had the pleasure of seeing one of his original watercolours and it was jewel-like - every facet being of genius. Learning about his life from this has been great. Thank you again Mr Beard!
Hello again and seeing one in the flesh so to speak is a pleasure I've never had. I did some work for a collector who owns the original of the mermaid image I used on the titles. But he's in Florida and I'm stuck here. Oh well.
Awww lucky collector! Thanks again 👩🎨 - the under-water theme is close to my heart - as you will see by my 3D work - @catherinelindsay.sculpts
Hi again, and I've been admiring your sculptures so thanks for the link. It's such a pleasure to see art that actually looks like something of beauty rather than the totally abstract and worse that seems to dominate both 2D and 3D modern art. I hope you are enjoying success with your work.

I'm so thankful I found this. The video thumbnail illustration returned a forgotten childhood memory to me in a flash. I had a fairytail illustration book and I remember The Little Mermaid illustrations as very haunting. THIS was one of the images. I'll search the deep web for more of his illustrations, how nostalgic! Thank you.
Hello and many thanks for your appreciation. Have fun online - there are a large number of his illustrations to be found, and even some complete books at Project Gutenberg.
I still have my H.C. Andersen book with his illustrations.
it's one of only 5 books I've held on to
Rackham and Dulac are two of my favorite Illustrators. Thanks
Hello and the same here.
I'm happy these paintings were with me in books when I have been growing up.
Hello and thanks a lot for your comment. No doubt about it - Dulac was a genius.
Art Historian: One can clearly see the Pre-Raphaelite influences in his early Art Neuvo inspired works.
Me: Ooooooooooooh- PURTY!!!!
Imagine if he'd given in fully to his parents pressuring him to finish law. These beautiful artworks would never have come to life. Toxic controlling parents, are you taking notes?
Yes, they were inspiring him. We all get inspired by fellow artists.
I had an uncle,a refugee from France. He had a nice set of art books that he somehow managed to keep. He was a watchmaker, so he was able to live comfortably here. I remember how kind he was for allowing me to look through his collection. It was a rare gift that he gave me. 👍
Hello and thanks for the comment. Wish I had seen them.
Thank you so much! Dulac is my favorite illustrator, but I never knew he did as much fabulous work as this, nor did I know anything about his life.

Becoming a successful artist is extremely rare. Most parents are just looking out for their kids' wellbeing.
@@PraiseTheFSMonster There are actually way more jobs in art than many people believe*. And jobs very closely related to being an artist. It's a matter of having the education/background, and not insisting that your first, or 8th job is going to make you the artist you see yourself as in your own dreams. Plus a lot of, lot of, lot of practice and a bit of luck. Realizing, too, that jobs kind of close to what you want to do but still bring in a paycheck are better than giving up the dream, or stubbornly hitting your head against a wall (not finding "the job" the first time) that just isn't going to budge, this time. Better to bend a bit, but consistently bending towards the dream. If more you g people could (calmy) express this to their parents, along with the opportunities they would be willing to take before the dream job comes, or the money to have one's own studio and gallery, parents might be more comfortable with "I'm going to be an artist!" (*The Bureau of Labor Statistics can be a good place to start).
A rare genius .such fine detail and beautiful colouring. What an imagination!Nothing Like his work is being done today.
Naturally enough I share your opinion. Such talent is rare indeed.
The cultivation of the imagination is a blessing. Today, people are slapped with labels that may deter the mind from wandering, thus promoting a trend towards uniformity of thought. People become comfortable, and noninquisitive, when things are predictable.
Fostering an approach that looks to the (inner, and outer) horizons, could be a great asset.
I like being on the edge of my seat, or finding an escape from the mundane, sometimes.
It makes me feel like I am ready for anything, and at the same time flowing into everything.
Thanks again. I love this series for its beautiful art, excellent production - and the way I feel so relaxed afterwards.
Hello and your ppreciation is always welcome. It's good to know that I can be educational, entertaining and therapeutic all at the same time!

Hello and thanks a lot for your enthusiastic respones to the video. There is undoubtedly a quality to his work that encourages the viewer to immerse themselves into his world.
I have to say, your homages to the great artisits of the past are quite engaging, thought provoking and works of art in their own right.. Thanks so much!
Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of what I'm trying to do with the channel. Your comment is most welcome.
Thank you Pete, for this series of illustrators. Well done.
Thanks a lot. It's a labour of love for me.
I loved watching this, I have three very early books displaying his art.
Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation. I hope you'll watch other videos on the channel too.
Great job again Pete. Dulac is so hard to capture because of his adaptive and changing styles through temperament, shapes, gesture and palate. His ability to pull it off makes for a weak “brand” if you will, but gains him hero status in the field. Always a surprise and yet another jewel to be found his. My teachers at California College of the Arts(and Crafts) would share him like a treasured secret. In classes for illustration, watercolor, figure drawing, color, and graphic design his name and work would pop up as would the oooos and awwws . His work spanning; intaglio, letterpress, and litho. From the Wright brothers to jets, Model Ts to Thunderbirds. Art Nouveau, Deco, Both World Wars. Europe to America, Quite a life of always learning and changing. A survivor and in the end = Hero
Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of the video. Such comments keep me motivated to produce more. In the case of Dulac my problem was what to leave out, rather than what to include. As you rightly point out, such a prolific and persisently creative man.
Oh my goodness, what treasures you may find on CZcams. I have never seen his work before , thank you so much for posting !
Hello and thanks a lot and I hope you'll continue to watch more content on the channel.
This was an excellent presentation. I am more familiar with Rackham's work, and had no idea that Dulac had such a huge body of work. I was completely unfamiliar with his later work, and it was interesting to note the looser style and fresher colour palette he later adopted.
Hello and yes unlike Rackham Dulac was really two different illustrators. The change of style seemed to come on quite suddenly and nobody's telling why. Maybe he just felt like a change.
@@petebeard I love the way he incorporated middle eastern and Eastern styles of Painting. I had no idea of this side of his work. I have several of his books and treasure them. What incredible talent. I would love to know how to desaturate colour.
I've just discovered your fine channel and immediately thrilled to see a documentary on Dulac. I still have Dulac's The Snow Queen given to me at the age of 12 (I'm now 60), and I remember spending hours studying his fantasy worlds. That volume is still nearest me on the bookshelves: the best things should always be near to hand as well as heart. Thank you for revealing his life, as well as his extraordinary career. I had no idea he was so versatile.
Hello and welcome to the channel. Thanks a lot for your appreciation, and as an admirer of Dulac I'm reasonably confident you'll find more on the channel thats of interest. I hope so, at least.
Dulacs images, with their oriental influences, have all the gorgeous colours of tiny exquisite enamels, and the delicate touch of a great watercolourist and a mastery of textures. His work was very evocative, magical and it has always spoken deeply to me, like Rackhams work.. Thank you for this.
Hello to you and naturally enough I absolutely agree with you about both these illustrator's work. Breathtaking and genre-defining.

So glad I discovered you today, with YT's suggestion of Maxwell Parrish. You've achieved the perfect balance of content, pace, information, and I love your voice. The writers, but more especially the illustrators of children's books of the Golden Age, made a deep impression on my early years. Hello and it's a particular pleasure to know that I'm bringing these great illustrators to the attention of viewers who were previously unaware of their work.
Seeing these beautiful artworks makes me cry with happiness. ✨🌸✨
Hello and I'm really glad you enjoyed it (not sure about the tears though).
Thrilled to find this channel Sir. Amateur interest here in all illustrations from Empire. I shopped a LOT at the Dover Bookshop when in the UK. A few years ago tried water colouring some. Plenty of joy and not too bad, even though I say so myself. Much gratitude for your dedicated work, and peace from Kenya, Sir!! 😊🙏
I remember seeing very beautiful art pieces as a young child. Only now do I realize that it is this artist. The many illustrations I have seen was in an antique shop once when I was young.
I loved picture books then before I started to only read chapter books and novels at the age of six, and remember stumbling upon one of the books that had his art in it. It was Sleeping Beauty, and the pages were very old and faded. I asked the lady who owned it where it came from, and she told me that it was passed down in a family for generations. How it got in her shop was due to the death in the family, and the members did not want many of the things that they found to be junk.
She then showed me some beautiful faerie figurines and prints in a small corner of her shop. I wanted to jump into the illustrations and go to far off places. When my relatives came to look for me, I didn't budge from where I was standing. They had to drag me out of there. I remember being mad that I couldn't play with the faeries. My mom told me that I had my own Tinkerbell toys and fairy costumes at home waiting for me. I said "But they are not as pretty as these! These are art!", lol.
My grandmother then bought me a bunch of art books. As I got older, she gave me a human biology textbook printed in the nineties, so the information was outdated, but I still loved to read and interpret the articles until I had my own way of understanding it. I used it to make art. I believed that you needed life to make art, so I studied everything.
I would catch bugs and butterflies as well to use as models, then set them free. I wanted to know and understand how many of the well respected artists made art and music, so I would study and research as much as I could.
I would go to the library at school whenever I got the chance. I never bothered with the picture books, but the ones about science. Many of the kids made fun of me for how odd I was.
But thd art teacher loved me. She always wanted to display my art. When we did self portraits, (mind you this was third grade), I amazed the adults with my accuracy. Due to my age, they expected the typical drawing a third grader would do. But I had confronted my identity and went on a journey of how others saw me, and how I saw myself. I combined the two and just drew. I didn't know what it was until it was finished since I was so concentrated.
I was very quiet and shy when it came to my art and reading books, as well as studying science books. When she wanted to have it displayed in the library, I was of course very embarrassed. But she said I was very good at it and had a strong sense of self image.
I don't really draw myself much anymore, but do draw many other things. I love doing watercolors and mixed mediums to get unique textures and interesting colors.
I still view that if art has no true sense or core of life deeply within it, and it is just flat and mundane(corporate art for example, Google, Facebook, etc.), it is not truly art. It needs to have a heart in order to convey it's emotions and theme if it has any.
Art tells a story which is unique to every individual who comes across it. Art also doesn't just exist in paintings, sketches, or statues. It is us as well. We are living, walking pieces of art. We were the beginning of what art is now today. We created it. Whether it be by accident or purposefully, we created regardless.
So look around you. Art is everywhere. It is in everything.
Hello to you and thanks a lot for your very personal reflection on the nature of creating images. As someone who is worryingly near the end of this journey I can say with conviction that drawing and making pictures all my life has been one my greatest pleasures and kept me just this side of sane.
Beautifully done, Pete. Your narration is the perfect compliment to the illustrations you show.
Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of the channel. It's most welcome.

Hello and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you'll watch other videos as there are many others from book illustration's golden age on the channel.
Absolutely wonderful. Thank you for such a well done video. The illustrations selected were excellent choices to show the progression of his work. As a child, we had one of his books. Being an absolute nerd, I would sit and look at the illustrations and make up my own stories. I couldn’t read yet. I have no idea what happened to the family books after I left home and moved away. I try not to think about. For me the loss of these personal treasures is painful, like losing an old friend.
I know just what you mean, I'd kill for my Yellow Fairy Book and my East of the Sun, West of the Moon I had as a child. I could get lost for what seemed like hours in the illustrations, as a child one is immersed in the pictures, it was magic.
Hello and many thanks for your positive response to the video. I hope you'll seek out others on the channel too.

I have a first edition 1908 The Tempest with 30 to 40 separate color pictures, each one covered and protected by sheets of tissue paper. It is exquisite. As a child I was fascinated by the pictures and my mother left it to me on her death. The colors are vivid and beautiful and it is one of my most treasured possessions. People have suggested that i should take the plates out and have them mounted into picture frames. What sacrilege.
Hello and that's a book I would love to see. I've only seen later reprints. It would be an act of barbarism to destroy the book - but you could scan the illustrations and have them digitally printed so you could have them on your walls and still have the book. Just a thought.
@@petebeard Value wise it is not great. There is even one available on EBay for around £300 but artistically and sentimentally it is invaluable. Also i have to say that i enjoyed your production and video so much that the excitement made me forget to thank you for your work and effort. You have greatly educated me yesterday.
these drawings/art works were in a 10 volume set my father gave me as a child/baby. it was called the home university bookshelf. thru the years they have disappeared. sadly.loved them.
Hello, and yes it's sad that what used to be treasured items can slip away over the years. All I can say is I'm grateful that at least these images still exist for new generations to admire.

Thank you this! Dulac has been one of my favorites since childhood. So gorgeous!

👍😍
i loved this video, i had never heard of dulac before. thank you for making this ❤️
Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation of the video - and of course Dulac's astonishingly beautiful work. I hope you'll watch others on the channel too.
@@petebeard i sure will! thank you again!
Nice to hear a yorkshire accent being an authority on a fine arts topic, instead of the usual monopoly of RP.
Hello and thanks. But just to nitpick (and I really don't mind) I'm from Manchester - the other side of the pennines. I did live in Leeds for quite a few years though so maybe I picked up a bit of Yorkshire there. Either way I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you'll watch others on the channel.
@@petebeard Sorry!!! Excuse my hubris; it appears I can't really tell northern accents apart that well. :)
And yes, I certainly will!
What a splendid artist, very interestingly featured in a highly interesting presentation style. The narrator's voice is particularly soft, almost gentle, which is another attractive feature of this and many other videos available on his channel.
I'll watch your other work with utmost pleasure, sir!
Hello and thanks a lot for your kind remarks about this video. Naturally enough I hope you continue to find subject matter that's of equal interest to you.
I love your channel, and your passion towards art and art history.
Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation of the channel. It's very welcome.
