    A few things about miguel
    - He isn't actually a vampire, he wasn't bitten by a radioactive spider, he injected himself with genetic mutation that was done with spider dna, he got claws and fangs as a result also he has no spider sense, the injections you see in the film seems to be him suppressing the animalistic nature when he gets unhinged from what I can tell I could be wrong about that.
    - he's not inherently a bad guy just misguided in his beliefs, he has no ulterior motives, what he told miles is the truth so far as we know, he's just really committed to what he believes, though it's funny that you guys immediately assumed he was a bad guy just based off how he looked, I just think he looks cool imo lol.
    - miguel is from the future, nueva york 2099 is his universe he started the spider society and invited them all there, he simply replaced himself in another universe where he died then it collapsed cause he wasn't suppose to be there, the spider that bit miles has nothing to do with him, he was clarifying to miles the circumstances under which he became spider-man was technically never suppose to happen, why blame miles for this idk that was mostly kingpin's fault but ya know story blah blah etc.
    - the question is, will miles's universe erase if he breaks the canon since technically he wasn't suppose to be spider-man in the first place he might not even have to adhere to those rules, gwen asks him this too after miles leaves.
    all in all, my advice with movies like these is not speculate too much cause you'll miss alot, alot of "wows" and "holy craps" is good enough commentary for a movie like this, it's kinda meant to be experienced first before you can assess it.

      The thing is, miles' universe is an anomaly. We saw the Canon broken already, his Peter died, his uncle wasn't supposed to die because he wasn't supposed to be spiderman, his counterpart became prowler with no spiderman so the canon was completely shattered, and then you have Gwen's dad breaking canon by choosing to denounce his title. The art direction for Gwen's scenes at home is some of the most heart-annihilating cinematography I've seen, just the way they use the fading colours to represent the disconnection and distance between father and daughter. Another channel I watched a reaction of this from pointed out in the beginning when Captain Stacy was intending on arresting Spider-Gwen that he was getting more and more blue and it was like he was retreating more and more into just his police training and his ideal as a policeman (being "blue") than anything else, that he was in that moment, just a cop dealing with a criminal. That's a devastating sort of spin to have in mind watching that scene again.

    I'm pretty sure Miguel's Earth was the Spider Base. The spider that bite Miles was from Earth 42, but Spot accidentally brought it over to Miles's Earth. It bit him, and he interfered with blonde Peter Parker. Thus, he got killed by King Pin and failed to stop the collider. Which kicked off this whole, sending people to other dimensions crisis. And Earth 42 was left with NO Spider-Man. Not Peter Parker, not Miles Morales, no one.
    In Miguel's Earth, his family died, but he found another Earth where it's Miguel died, but his family lived. He replaced that Miguel, and that Earth was destroyed due to changing the canon SO much. Then he returned to his own Earth and founded the Spider Base to stop it from happening again out of guilt.
    When Miles saved Captain Singh, Miguel said they might be able to stop it but might not.

    Other people have explained this in the Patreon comments, but the scene with the live-action convenience store owner is there to connect the film to Sony's Venom movies. I like both, but the first movie is particularly delightful (the second is also fun but feels like it was chopped to bits for some reason). Fingers crossed the third (and seemingly final, capping the trilogy) feels a little less butchered (and/or we get extended cuts to promote it).
    The billboard says "It's a generic brand" -- there's a red circular logo with a cursive-y font in white that says "COLA" above it. An interesting departure (or just a competing company) from the original movie, where it was called Koka-Soda or something like that in Miles' universe.
    Spider-Man has multiple canon events. Anything that contributes greatly to his classic character arc is defined by this movie as a canon event. So, yeah, Miles already had his uncle die. "Police captain close to Spider-Man is killed trying to save a child" is simply a different, additional canon event. Simone says she has not seen the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies, but the scene that appears here is from them, not newly-shot, and -- not to spoil it -- but Garfield's Peter also loses his uncle, so these are just two different tragedies.
    Some fun voices you didn't necessarily recognize: while Deadpool does not show up like George was hoping, you do get Karan Soni as the Mumbattan Spider-Man. Soni plays cab driver Dopinder in those movies. You also didn't seem to recognize Andy Samberg as Ben Reilly, the angsty Spider-Man (whose *tortured existence* is a joke reference to the comic arc that Ben Reilly is from). Then there's also Daniel Kaluuya of Get Out and Nope fame as Hobie. Apparently there was an interview released today where the filmmakers said they almost cut Hobie before Kaluuya was cast, and then they went back and made his character more essential to the story.
    Lord and Miller, the "queen"-like logo at the beginning of the film, started out as animators, working on the cult MTV show "Clone High" before graduating to the CGI-animated movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. They also directed both Jump Street movies, which you did on the channel, and then they are actually the filmmakers behind The LEGO Movie as well (which, by the way: if you do get to that, *please* also watch The LEGO Batman Movie, which is not only, in my opinion, better and funnier than either LEGO Movie, but also one of the best Batman movies). Unfortunately, after this movie came out there was a piece in Vulture accusing Phil Lord in particular of overworking the animators, having them complete shots and then rework them from the ground up once he saw the finished product (this movie was completed less than 3 weeks before it opened theatrically, and as a result, two different versions of it ended up being sent to theaters with slightly different jokes and visuals). Fingers crossed that Lord learns his lessons from the complaints and finds a better working relationship with them for the trilogy capper. I think both of them are very clever, but while this movie is gorgeous and the animators' work is very much appreciated, no amount of greatness is an excuse for mistreating people.

    The thing that really resonated with me in this film, and the reason I liked Hobie's rebellious character so much is the way the movie makes a meta-narrative of "canon" representing choice versus destiny in terms of story, and the wider implication of audience expectation versus creative freedom. One of my least favorite tropes in storytelling is giving a character incredible powers to either change their fate or change the timeline at large, and then having the narrative invalidate that character's choices because fate and destiny are deemed more important. It's a way to create drama and subvert some expectations, but stories like that also don't tend to communicate much beyond the idea that again, the character's abilities and choices don't matter in the grand scheme.
    And the other part of that is audience expectation of what makes a Spider-Man story "canon." And this is very topical for the character of Miles Morales specifically, because there was a lot of racial backlash both to the Marvel Ultimates comic where Miles debuted, and also to the possibility of the character being played by Donald Glover. "There can't be a black Spider-Man, and if you make one then it's not *canon* ". And while we're on the topic of canonical things not necessarily being good things, the original Gwen Stacy was written to die in the comics because those writers thought she was boring and that Peter would be more interesting paired with MJ, so Gwen got one of the rawest crappy canon in comic's history.
    Aside from the clear and harmful tropes in the above, sticking rigidly to established canon can be straight up boring, constantly retreading the same ground with the same characters and familiar character beats, without the opportunity to try new things and make new stories. The Spiderverse films are immensely innovative for more reasons than I could possibly list here, but their commitment to take established stories and characters in new directions is something that puts them leagues ahead of practically every other MCU and superhero property in my mind.

      Yes! Abso-flippin-lutely! The whole idea of forced fates and not being able to change one's life is OK writing in ancient mythology, but it's utter crap in the superhero genre in general - and especially with regard to Spiderman! The whole point of superheroes is that one can stand up and make a difference. The whole "canon event" theory runs counter to the idea that "With great power comes great responsibility." It's basically saying that, "There is no great power, because you can't change your fate. And if you try to take responsibility, you'll only make things worse." That's utter crap!
      And it also flies in the face of common sense. How can "The Universe" possibly care when or how Uncle Ben dies? (Or Captain Stacy, or anyone else?) One relatively insignificant mortal human, on one relatively insignificant planet, dies a few years earlier or later - How can that possibly matter to the universe? And somehow, Miguel thinks he's the arbiter of who is fated to die and when. All humans are going to die. We might get shot by a burglar, or a supervillain might cause some rubble to fall on us, or we might get hit by a car, or die of cancer or a heart attack or whatever. And yes, it's always going to be a tragedy for the loved ones we leave behind. But it is utter arrogance to think that it is destined to happen one particular way, or that it's important to the whole universe!

While you can put it together in the first film, the start of this one really makes it clear that Gwen knew what he meant the entire time, because Gwen spent the movie in the company of Peter B Parker - a man who looks the same as her best friend.

    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will include another hero vs. hero confrontation because, in the opinion of the movie's co-director, Miles and Miguel have every right to stand up for what they believe in. In an interview with SFX Magazine, co-director of Across the Spider-Verse Kemp Powers said that fans shouldn't assume Spider-Man 2099 is the bad guy. Powers declared: "Miguel definitely becomes Miles' antagonist, but his goals are very understandable." Some may agree with Miles' viewpoint, while others may agree with Miguel's." "You know, Miguel is the Spider-Force's leader for a reason. He carries a tremendous feeling of duty. Spider-Man has always been your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but Miguel's obligations extend far beyond any single neighborhood. He's an intriguing figure, but he's hardly a villain. - In Spot's flashback you actually see the spider making it's way towards Earth 42 Miles.
    - Also there is a hint in the first movie that Miles would become his dimension Prowler when he meets Spider-man (RIP). When they "spider sense" each other, Miles's starts off green and purple (Prowler's colors) and Peter's are red and blue (Spiderman's colors) and then Miles's changes to red and blue. It does make sense, with his relationships to his uncle and father, not to mention trying to get kicked out of Vision Academy.
    - in the comic books Miguel O'Hara comes by his powers differently then the traditional Spider-Man story. And he's not really a vampire so much is a more animalistic version of Spider-Man. Put his finger supposed to be like that of the spider.

    The Donald Glover scene was a crazy full circle moment. Bendis designed Miles after Donald Glover after seeing Glover dressed up as Spidey on the show Community. Glover had been sneaking in Spider-man references as part of his campaign to play Spider-man, something that started as a gag in his stand-up. Glover would later get to voice Miles in the cartoons and of course, played the MCU's Uncle Aaron in Homecoming who would later become the Prowler as you saw here.

    Pretty sure Nueva York is Miguel's home dimension, seeing that the one he did the switch-in fell apart.
    The spider was meant for Miles from Earth 42 (when The Spot is describing his backstory, you can see the spider being sucked into a portal before its about to bite a teen with braids).
    Miguel injected himself with with DNA samples to obtain his powers. But that made it him more spider-like - becoming more feral when agitated, growing claws, and venomous fangs. No spider sense, though. He's not an actual vampire, I think he just got frustrated and was trying to immobilize Renaissance Vulture with his venom.
    Pavitr's dimension seems to unravel due to the collider and The Spot...who is basically a living collider. Miles even mentions that. I think Miguel is trying to convince himself of canon events, because if he's wrong, then all of people the Spider Society had allowed to die, would be on him. So, he grasps at what he THINKS happened, he rationalizes the destruction of the dimension he replaced the other Miguel in, was him breaking the canon of that world. Even if that world might've fallen apart due to something else (some multiversal shenanigans, most likely, given it resembles the glitching and alternate objects overlapping from the first movie, but for all we know, that might be what happened when Kingpin's collider in THAT world wasn't stopped), Miguel just assumed it was because of the switcharoo, but it could've been a number of things. Then he saw the patterns in different Spiders' stories, and became convinced that the preservation of the canon was key.
    Heck, even if that universe WAS destroyed because of him taking place of the person that died, that's still different - one is introducing your incompatible atoms into a universe for a prolonged period of time, another is saving someone who already belongs in that universe. And even if canon events are true, even Miguel really cracked how it all works...Miles is an anomaly, if anyone can alter the canon, it's him.

I like to think that he's so battle hardened that he's lost the meaning of SpiderMan, and that in the next movie Mile will help him see that. Also, Miguel was never bit by a spider. George had basically the same reaction to the ending of this movie that I did.
    "They're adding more? How much run time do we have left?" then staring at the screen gobsmacked when it said "to be continued."
    I think the end is pretty much my only problem with the movie. There's two ways I think it could've been fixed. The easiest is just slapping a "part 1" in the title somewhere.
    The other would be finding a way to get Gwen's scene with her dad as close to the end of the film as possible. It's the emotional climax of the movie, but there's so much time between it and the actual ending that it almost... fades away and preps you for the movie to keep going. If you could get Gwen's scene closer to the end of the runtime, you'd still have the catharsis of that scene when credits start rolling.

  • @DrekeXorn13
    @DrekeXorn13 Před 9 měsíci +6

    Miguel's original universe is Earth-928 (and his city is Nueva York). That's where the Spider HQ is located. Miguel is not like other Spider people - he manually gives himself a mild variation of Spider peoples' powers. Notice he uses his claws to climb walls so he doesn't have the 'sticky' limbs most Spider people have. Also notice the Renaissance Vulture was able to get the drop on him so he likely does not have Spider Sense either. His webs and suit are all just technology and although he uses the injection to maintain his spider powers it also makes him part vampire. And apparently he isn't funny either lol
    Earth-42 is where 1610 Miles' spider originates from. Go back to when the Spot explains he ran the collider in Miles' Earth-1610 to bring a spider from another universe over and you'll see the E-42 spider was about to bite E-42's Miles (with braids). Instead, it was brought to Earth-1610 and bit our Miles - the original anomaly event. In Spot's apartment we also see he has brought over numerous spiders from other dimensions too so who knows whats happening in those universes. The reason 1610 Miles was transported to Earth-42 is because his Spider DNA is from E-42.
    Miguel simply wants to defend the Spiderverse. Our understanding is when canon events are interrupted it causes quantum holes and eventually the collapse of the entire universe. We saw this firsthand in Earth-50101 with Pavitr's universe. Since it is connected through the Web of Destiny, it threatens to collapse other universes too. However, a mild hint we got in this movie is what if Spider people don't act like most other Spider people? What if they tell their loved one they are a Spider person? What if other characters make different decisions? Gwen's father was able to avoid a canon event entirely by not becoming a captain! Not to mention Earth-42 doesn't even have a Spider-Man to protect it - that's pretty significant!
    There are a lot of cool theories out there, like does Miles even get canon events if he was never meant to be a Spider person? Also, how can Spot cause a canon event if, according to Miguel, Miles was never supposed to be Spider-Man and Spot was never meant to exist? Is it possible for a canon event to lead to the destruction of the idea of canon events? Is someone else pulling the strings of the Web of Destiny and the Spider Society simply does not know it? Lots to be seen!

      @MrZeek1519 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Great post.
      I just wanted to reply to your last paragraph... Another thing to consider is that Earth 1610 already had a spider-man, and he died at the beginning of the first movie. That Peter Parker almost certainly already had his own canon event(s), plus he wasn't supposed to die by the hands of a Kingpin from another universe. Even with that screwing up 1610, Miles' universe never collapsed. So I wonder if Earth 1610 can't be damaged or collapse by universe-altering events, or Miles' decisions.

    • @DrekeXorn13
      @DrekeXorn13 Před 9 měsíci

      To be fair, the Kingpin that killed E-1610's Spider-Man was NOT a Kingpin from another universe. I suppose to answer my own question plus address the vacuum of canon events due to that Peter dying, a potential answer is that Miles is filling in the gap of canon events for 1610 and Prowler Miles of E-42 is filling in the gaps of canon events that were supposed to happen in E-42 with their Spider-man

    You guys are one of the few reactors I've seen to clock that canon events are (probably) not a thing, so kudos. However, there is a blink and you'll miss it moment in Spot's flashback where the spider was crawling towards Earth 42 Miles in class when it got beamed away by the collider; the implication is that the spider was intended to bite 42-Miles, and that our Miles getting bit prevented him from going down a similar path of being lured into villainy by his uncle.
    Whichever way they resolve it in the third film, the implication is clear that Miguel's interpretation of events is at best skewed by guilt and he is projecting his self-loathing onto Miles; like Peter B said, Miles is the reason him and MJ reconciled and had Mayday, why Gwen didn't fall into total despondency after losing her Peter, and whilst Pavitr's dimension being under threat is scary, there's never any proof that that was Miles' fault and not a result of Spot - the black hole and how Miguel's adopted world was destroyed look nothing alike. The Spider-Society being built on the belief that people have to die to enforce some sort of cosmic balance is supposed to be a tragedy of errors.

    Y'all commented about the musical cues at the start, but did you notice Miguel's music sounds an awful lot like the Prowler's?
    Edit: my understanding at the end was that Spider-Base is in Miguel's home dimension. He invaded another dimension and broke the canon there, causing it to crumble, like what happened in Mumbahattan. Then he returned to his own and formed the Multiversal Spider-Corps.
    But I'm also confused about the fact Miles DID have his tragedy already with his uncle Aaron (uncle Ben, anyone?). Tobey didn't have a police chief die, as far as I recall. And were still too early in Tom's story to know. Though his "uncle Ben" was aunt may.
    So we'll have to see.

    Ps. For your question about the spider and Miguel being related, Miguel injects himself with the power because that's past lore. Basically he was part of a lab and they were testing out powers. Miguel has nothing to do with the 42 spider. Maybe in Prowler Miles's dimension there's an ineffected Peter because the spider was taken away before it could bite him but Miles instead. I actually don't mind the "to be continued" thing at all, because this one is more about Gwen than Miles. It started with Gwen and ended with Gwen. So, Gwen's story arch is done.

    My favorite bit of trivia is that the actors who play Spider-Man Noir and the Spot are cousins (Nic Cage and Jason Schwartzman)

    The lady that was nonchalant in the live action world is from the Venom movies, hence why she’s not impressed by anything just simply being weird.

    I came home and immediately watched your guys video. Love you guys 💙💚🧡❤️🐺
    This is hands down my number 1 favorite movie of the year. I cried 10 times when I first watched this in theaters two months ago and I have now watched it 7 times. And my feelings have not changed either. Since the physical film released yesterday on the 5th, I'm going to watch this today after watching IT: Chapter 2 for its anniversary today and after TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. This is my second favorite movie and animated movie of all time and I cannot wait to see Beyond the Spider-Verse in theaters in 2026. Best movie of the year and best Spider-Man movie so far.

    I heard the lego sequence was produced by a kid who the producers found on YT (?) and asked him to animate that part. His lego original animations was off the chart. Pretty cool.

    The live action world was from the Venom movie and she didn't react because she has Venom coming in and threatening to eat her spleen if she doesn't sell him chocolate every other week.

    The prowler Miles' theme is also a reverse of Miles' spiderman theme from the first movie!

    Miles 1610 is not an anomaly...anymore. Miguel and the algorithm are correct in designating him as the original anomaly. However, Peter B. Parker is the representation (for the most part) of our origin point Spider-man and his trajectory was heading in a completely different direction. It's through Miles now that he reunited with Mary Jane, and they together birthed Mayday. That is why Peter wanted Miles to hold the baby. It is why when Gwen gets forced back to her universe, she has the epiphany after her dad quits the force that they are wrong. Miles is not an anomaly. He is a miracle, and it is now through his choices and existence as Spiderman that the canon is shifting, not breaking. He was never supposed to be Spiderman but through the laws of causality and infinite possibilities he is. So, the spider verse is making adjustments.

  • @dnjae1275
    @dnjae1275 Před 9 měsíci

    When Gwen's father said he quit, that would stop the cannon in her universe because he won't be a captain. Also, her hair turns pinker when she's with Miles.

    Yeeaahh... I was super bummed out when I saw it was just a Part 1. Most of the time when that happens, they try to have some minor storybeat resolution to help ease things along, ya know? To make it feel like less of a sudden stop. I really wish they had done that here. But I also understand that it's easier said than done, lol. Turns out, writing is hard. Who knew? lol

    • @SoonLeeNZ
      @SoonLeeNZ Před 8 měsíci +1

      They actually did. Gwen reconciling with her father at the end of this movie is the resolution, remember it is Gwen who kicks off this movie.

    The thing that Pavitr is playing with is a bracelet AND a yoyo, or at least a different kind of yoyo called a diabolo (AKA Chinese yoyo). They're often larger and disconnected from the string. They're fun and you can see them in a few circus performances.

    • @kenkakuknight
      @kenkakuknight Před 9 měsíci

      Also, there are apparently multiple canon events in a Spider-man Story: the death of an uncle, the death of a police captain, the death of Gwen Stacy, etc.

    There actually is a reference to Everything Everywhere All at Once. It's a blink if you miss it easter egg. Above the appartement where The Spot is carrying out his experiment there is a billboard sign that says All of it Always All over the Place, with a bagel in the middle.
    It makes me wonder: did the filmmakers decide that The Spot was the bagel guy because of that movie?

    3:31 The hook in Gwen's theme song is the same note sequence as "Spider-Man, Spider-Man" from the classic show theme, but the timing is all different to make it her own.

  • @ISavant
    @ISavant Před 9 měsíci +2

    i wonder if anyone's pointed out yet that there's a brief clip in the spot's flashbacks showing that the spider he sent from another dimension to miles' dimension was indeed supposed to bite the miles that became the prowler. So miles in earth 42 was supposed to be spiderman, but miles-1610 wasn't, because peter parker was spiderman, and died because he stopped to chat to miles, who was only there because he had been bitten.
