god THAT was the movie i was remembering when I was watching this trailer, yes you seem very right!
I’m disappointed everything is so soft and cutesy looking. What drew me as a child to the books was the gnarliness of the illustrations. Book Muthr was this uncanny, obviously robotic thing; her counterpart here is soft and not very detailed. I honestly kind of like that design, but it just feels weird that it’s supposed to be Muthr.
To be fair. A robotic AI meant to nurture and care for a human *shouldn't* be uncanny creepy or unsettling.
I think the fact Muthr is somewhat unsettling to look at (but with an expressive humanish face that indicates she is still made for childcare and approachability) aids the story in making you uncertain of her role and creates tension with whether or not she’s a force for good. She’s not wholly horrific to look at, and even pleasantly human in the face, but the edge of uncanniness lends itself to the story. I still prefer that over the entirely soft doll of this trailer.
The art for book Wondla is pretty soft and cute
I won’t deny there’s cute things, but they tend to be somewhat “ugly cute”. This trailer looks like anything that could have come out of modern Disney 3D animation.

why did they age her up!?!?!? 😭Part of her developement was not being a young adult, but a child lost in a strange world??? Still excited for it though!
that was my biggest gripe! the story of WondLa is about being hurt and afraid and challenged and still growing to be kind. its about eva growing to a teen/adult and despite everything choosing to be kind and brave.

Yes, a trilogy of books, in fact. The author is Tony DiTerlizzi. They were pretty good with some really cool illustration that appear to have been completely ignored in favor of something Disney-fied and less unique.

Hmmmm call me nit picky but one thing I really love about the book was it's visuals. I feel like this is a downgrade compared to the original. At least stories like nimona and HTTYD they were both visually pleasing and had compelling storytelling. Hopefully it's mostly faithful to the books. 🤔

Same, I don't mind the change in ethnicity but the outfit she wore in the books was so cool and Muthr's design was awesome!! These look kinda... boring and plain in comparison.
Might be an animation thing then. Cause it's the reason why in Nimona Goldloin has short hair instead of long like in the book. 🤔 Cause certain outfits and hair might be tricky to keep it consistent. Especially for more than an hour. Which is a shame cause I actually did like Eva hair in the book. Instead of this version. 😣

Like, Eva is a curious child longing for the outside world since she's been stuck inside all her life. She feels lied to, she's lonely and frustrated and confused and just wants understanding and community. She desires to leave looking for the wondla based on a dream- is that not enough? For a child to bust out into the world off the foundation of desire alone as opposed to being summoned via a quest like this was a video game?

Honestly, the fact they've already changed the baseline premise of why this adventure started and her age concerns me as far as whether the series will be a good watch... too many producers are taking good stories and changing them drastically to "their own version" that they think is better. I'm a little tired of it, so I hope this is still good because I loved this story
Like lowkey the idea of the visual take on Wondla seems awesome since that is clearly what Tony wanted Wondla to be (like a grand sci fantasy action movie) but from the soft visual style that completely undermines that fantastical otherworldly and carefully colorcoded aspects of the Wondla books this movie doesn't seem like anything other than nostalgia bait. The aesthetic aspects of Wondla were truly their greatest strength so it's unfortunate to see that has met the sandpaper

Omg!! Yes yes yes!! I read this trilogy and wanted to find it but you can only find it at the library. This is my favorite! Of course it's probably not going to be just like the stories but I'm definitely going to watch it! No matter what! IIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE I CANT WAIT!

It's written by Tony Ditzerlitzi, one of the greatest book illustrators ever. He worked with Kate dicamillo and illustrated The Spiderwick Chronicles which is also a movie. You should definitely check him out. He's awesome. I enjoyed his art growing up. And now I try to follow that same passion. Although I'm not very good at it. Lol.

Yooo, I share the same sentiment @KineticJett ! I remember reading this series as a kid and it was so awesome! I just loved the biodiversity of the aliens, the characters, the stunning visuals, and Eva's journey in wholly strange world different from what she learned have grown up and finding her place in it. It's amazing to see it all come to life. The feeling of wonder and awe! I'm eager to watch it soon! I recommend anyone here who haven't read the trilogy to do so. The 1st book is called "The Search for WondLa" by Tony DiTerrlizzi. The following books are "The Hero for WondLa" and "The Battle for WondLa". It's been a while since I last read myself.

I love the design of the books though. There's a certain style to it. And this version just simplified the whole thing. And there's more drama to the story alone. And if you want to adapt from the book, do it right?!
F-cking finally. I've been waiting years for this. I'm not in love with the redesigns of the characters but I'm excited to see how they tell Eva-9's story.
This is a TV series? This looks less like a TV series and more like a full length movie. Either way it looks pretty good. Just hope it doesn’t disappoint.
I haven't read this series in a long time, but it's one of my favourite book series ever. I wish this had been either 2D or live action, and NOT on Apple TV, but you can bet I will be watching regardless 🙏🏾

It looks like they got at least the aliens accurate to the books! Which to me is top priority when it comes to visuals. MUTHR looks softer than her appearance in the books, but I can understand the intent of this redesign. I think it makes her look more like a human mother, someone more familiar for Eva during her life in the sanctuary. But of course she's still a robot.
The books had a more old school storybook illustration than what is shown in this animation. The animation equivalent to that is the Disney movie look. (Although this is more the new school version) I think most of the visual changes are to cater to a wider audience, which is totally alright as long as the TV show still have the same soul as the books. Adaptations always change something about the source material, nothing new under the sun.

I remember finishing the first book of this series and thinking, "I really hope nobody tries to make a movie out of this." The way this guy writes is incredible. Highly recommend reading the books. It's pretty much impossible to accomplish what he does in film. One element I loved in the books was her trying to figure out what certain things are--if you can physically see what she's looking at, you lose some of the mystery and twists of the series. (Not trying to deter you from the movie, just emphasizing how amazing the books are.)

The animation and world design looks fantastic! Not upset about the change to Eva although it is a surprise (less surprising as you look at the later books, its easy to forget just how young she is in them), but I am a lil disappointed to lose the very 50s-futuristic design of all of the technology. What would the goldfish car be without looking like it's straight from retro futurism? Besteel and Rovender look incredible though

What... am I looking at? I never read the books, but I did see the fantastic illustrations for them. And yet, even with a blueprint for what the world looked like, they give us THIS? It just doesn't feel right.
