- HM King George VI addresses his subjects on D-Day, 6 June 1944.
Transcript:
Four years ago our Nation and Empire stood alone against an overwhelming enemy with our backs to the wall. Tested as never before in our history, in God's Providence we survived that test.
The spirit of the people, resolute, dedicated, burnt like a bright flame lit surely from those unseen fires which nothing can quench.
Once more a supreme test has to be faced. This time the challenge is not to fight to survive, but to fight to win the final victory for the good cause. Once again what is demanded from us all is something more than courage, more than endurance. We need the revival of spirit, the new unconquerable resolve.
After nearly five years of toil and suffering we must renew that crusading impulse on which we entered the war and met its darkest hour.
We and our allies a sure that our fight is against evil and for a world in which goodness and honour may be the foundation of the life of men in every land.
That we may be worthily matched with these new summons of destiny I desire solemnly to call my people to prayer and dedication.
We are not unmindful of our own shortcomings, past and present. We shall ask not that God will do our will, but that we may be enabled to do the will of God. And we dare to believe that God has used our Nation and Empire as an instrument for fulfilling His high purpose.
I hope that throughout the present crisis of the liberation of Europe there may be offered us earnest, continuous and widespread prayer.
We, who remain in this land, can most effectively enter into the suffering of subjugated Europe by prayer. Whereby we can fortify determination of our sailors, soldiers and airmen who go forth to set the captives free.
The Queen joins with me in sending you this message. She well understands the anxieties and cares of our womenfolk at this time. And she knows that many of them will find, as she does herself, fresh strength and comfort in such waiting upon God.
She feels that many women will be glad in this way to keep vigil with their men as they man the ships, storm the beaches and fill the skies.
At this historic moment surely not one of us is too busy, too young, or too old to play a part in a nationwide, a worldwide vigil of prayer as the great Crusade sets forth.
If from every place of worship, from home and factory, from men and women of all ages and many races and occupations, our intercessions rise, then, please God, both now and in the future not remote, the predictions of an ancient song may be fulfilled: "The Lord will give strength unto His people, the Lord will give His people the blessing of peace."

He struggled so much to overcome this impediment. He didn't want the job but became one of the great monarchs and was genuinely loved.
Way better than his older brother would have been.
I am 93 years now,and I have been looking at the posts on here.I have tears reading the really lovely posts of the Kings broadcast. There are still many good Men and women in what is left of our once great country.
You must have some incredible memories and stories from the war. I wish we could be pen pals so I could hear them.
We will fight the good fight and keep the memory alive
Like Sir Winston Churchill said, we shall never surrender!
I am American and not terribly enamored with monarchy. But if we could have a monarch like King George VI, I would swear allegiance to him before anyone in recent American politics, that is for sure. What a great and inspiring historical figure he was!
May his majesty rest in peace.
Thank you - my parents escaped Nazi Germany and were taken in by the British in Rhodesia, and the world service was part of our daily lives
My pleasure.
Thank God he was King when that dark hour came.
My Lord God, give King George VI, the Queen Mum, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret good rest
God Rest the King. Amazing man, to conquer his oratory limitations while carrying the weight of an Empire on his shoulders. The war aged him prematurely, and flat out killed FDR.
King George 6th was one of the best men who ever lived. R.I.P the king
I remember this speech as a young. lad of 15 years.I thought this man was a truly good and honourable King.there are none today that can match him.
Oh God! How I wish we had leaders of this calibre today. Look at the state of us!
Hero…one who overcomes fear to complete the task. George VI remained in London and routinely rallied those bombed the night before. The world needs more like him.
As The Queen said, when asked about leaving London....."The children shall not leave without me. I shall not leave without the King. And the King shall NEVER leave!" Epic respect for these people.
Britain's best ever monarch. Such a brave and inspirational figure. R.I.P. King George VI
He really really was . If only the Queen had been capable of such inspiration and devoted interest in the people of this country .
Utter moron, just like his father. Our best monarchs have been William the Conqueror and the two Elizabeths.
@@alexandradane3672 The stupidest remark I have ever seen on the Web.
@@alexandradane3672 That statement is utter garbage
My favourite King. We need leaders as him and Mr Churchill. May rest in peace. Thank you for share with us!
You can hear him being helped by Logie here with his pauses, etc. He came along way to overcome his stammer.
Charlotte Bruce he did Charlotte Bruce?
Listening in 2019 your majesty!
Seventy-five years ago this minute, His Majesty spoke to his Empire. It's somewhat chilling to listen to it at the exact chronological moment he broadcast.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to hear this. I was not alive during this time.
"Whereby we can fortify determination of our sailors, soldiers and airmen who go forth to set the captives free." That line can apply to today's world as well.
It is no wonder that this Great War time King was so greatly Beloved by His People !!...Elizabeth came from Great stock !!!...
At this time, we now need a leader such as this great person to model and guide our steps forward
You've got one; his beloved daughter. A very sensible person. Let. Her. Be. A Real Queen!
I saw the movie about this, the Kings Speech.
For the Flag for the Monarchy for our own green lands we shall heed the call to serve her, our Britannia.
King George the IV was the best monarch that Britain ever had. I'm a part Maori New Zealander myself and I think he was very brave. I'm proud of him.
Not trying to be a dick but what did he do that was so brave, its not like he had to storm the beaches of France like your average jo.
Hahahaha.....not even close,I see History is not your thing WHAT SO EVER m8,let bakers bake pal.Had to comment on such a ridiculous and outrageous statement sorry but i had to....peace.
Gelrald Oldo his bravery was that he could conquer his stutter, which horribly ruined his ability to talk and make speeches, which for a king is a big obstacle, but he conquered it and became a major figurehead for British morale, almost even as great as Churchill.
Simon Mill George the IV or George the VI ?
Pesky tangled fingers, I'm sure.
The greatest King! Thank you!❤️🇬🇧❤️
Thank you so much for putting this up. I cannot find it anywhere else online and I am very grateful to you.
Thank you for your kind comment.
Delighted to be of any use )
Thank you for creating and posting this bit of history. So poignant for today, the 70th anniversary of D Day.
Thank you.
Delighted you like it.
I enjoy very much finding old recordings of messages from British Royals and listening to them fully. If only the leaders of nations today could give such speeches with as much feeling as those made in the past.
1812AndMore what about 1812and more?
Thankyou so much for posting this important clip!
Entirely my pleasure.
It is frequently said that Churchill was the right man for the time of need to be prime minister. Overlooked is that fact KGVI was teh right man to be king at the time as well. Not surprising QEII adored her father.
Listening to this today june 6th 2017
Every school in the country should play this to their pupils, especially teachers and University professors and their student chained to a chair and made to listen every day for a year.
The Kings Speech was such a good movie. If you havent watched it i highly reccomend it.
The King wanted to be a part of the D-Day invasion, but Churchill wouldn't let him.
as i heard it, churchill wanted to land with the troops, the king in his wisdom decided the best way to get his point across was to tell churchill he was going, churchill said no way, we cant spare you, the king said now you have my piint, we cannot spare you mr churchill.............problem solved.....the differnce between knowledge and wisdom
point
Appeaser
Now that would have been a sight to see the king leading the charge of Normandy. Hitler would have shitted himself if he heard that news
Awesome!
Magnifique !
Gibraltar my home ❤❤❤
Fine man, even finer daughter.
They turned that dude from Darkest Hour into a real person!
Nice.
Some think that because he was naturally left-handed but was forced to use his right hand while he was a child caused his difficulty of speaking. Fortunately, this did not happen to me. I am left-handed and my teachers simply accepted it.
That's because you were not alive when kids were forced to switch hands. My dad was born in 1923 and was forced in school to switch. Do you know where this came from? What did people use for hundreds or thousands of years before toilet paper was invented? This is why you are not supposed to shake hands with your left hand. But this does not apply to the ancient Romans, they were more civilized.
As an American, this is the one Monarch I hold in high regard. His daughter wasn’t so bad either 😉
I'd say he just needs a more bolder voice. Other than that he's a great guy
2019
This speech mirrors his call to prayer for the deliverance of the troops from Dunkirk. After that miracle, it's time to return to France.
god save the king
I didn t EXPECT that but it s okay

Ronnie Bishop And we didn’t. Certain people talk of reparations(slavery) Our soldiers,Sailors ,Airmen.gave their lives that this little but Great Country could exist in freedom.and foreigners should take note.
If Edward VIII was King there would never have been a D-Day and Hitler would have conquered Europe
Glory to God! And now more than ever, in the face of blasphemous Islamic subjugation and tyranny within our own borders, the British people need again to return to God in a spirit of repentance and humility to seek divine intervention and deliverance. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear...
Excellent thought and testimony to the Gospel of Repentance, Faith and Baptism that we come together in Obedience and Reverence to the Eternal Spirit and Divine intervention.
Islam is simply the third and the final message from God, read your Bible and pay attention Deuteronomy 33 2 this verse means there three messages the second message from Seir which in Bethlehem Christianity but there is a third one from Paran which is Mecca.
You follow the message of your time It is a test from God.
Jesus Christ PBUH was sent to the lost sheep of Israel the final message for all people.

My favorite king is Jesus Christ...the only king
Amen
My favourite king is king George VI
@@thomashambly3718 George the VI us a deputy king, and, judging from the speech, I think he'd be the first to admit it and would be ashamed to think of himself as Christ's equal, let alone superior. Jesus, as I'm sure King George VI would agree, is King of Kings.
@@prayerpatroller yeah but jesus wasnt officially a "king" of any territory
@@thomashambly3718 ohohoh. You would be surprised to find how many times in history certain territories have acclaimed Christ and Holy Mary their only rulers in an efficient way to avoid taxes.
Did he realise he was speaking for Satan?
I think not.
Now look at London and other English cities today. Britain was conquered. But not by the Germans. We fought the wrong side.
Who has conquered Britain?
Then you would have been enslaved and speaking Deutschland by now!!!!
No, the National Socialists had to be crushed. But then the insidious rot of regular socialism should also been eliminated.
The wrong side?...So we shouldn't have fought the Natzis?...Not the sharpest bulb in the draw are you!? 😂
Oh! I looked at your channel, your a total racist. Like the people we fought against, so it makes sense that you'd say that.
