  • As a world-renowned ballet dancer and choreographer, George Birkadze brings grace and power to the stage with every move. The same can be said of his second pursuit: mixed martial arts. With black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo and Kyokushin karate, Birkadze bridges the worlds of martial arts and ballet to prove that all dancers are fighters, and all fighters are dancers.

    • @fifthdoctor
      @fifthdoctor Před 6 lety +14

      Spirit Splice it’s true! I must admit that the style of martial arts she learns does not have as many belts to earn, but this particular girl has been working since she was five years old to earn her belts. And it is possible, she’s not the only example I can think of who has a black belt at a young age.

    • @spiritsplice
      @spiritsplice Před 6 lety

      She isn't competent at 14. That is why any decent martial art has a minimum age to obtain a black belt.

    • @fifthdoctor
      @fifthdoctor Před 6 lety +9

      Spirit Splice what do you mean by ‘not competent’. Do you mean to say that she doesn’t have the physical strength or capability to be a black belt? Or that she doesn’t understand the lore and history of the sport? Please elaborate.

    • @luisa146
      @luisa146 Před 6 lety +6

      +Spirit Splice In my school the minimum age required is 14. To get the dans though you have to get older. Maybe in that girl's school it's the same. Either way, if she's been training since she was 5, then it's 9 years of experience. Nearly a decade of experience doesn't matter just because she was a child?

    Martial arts are a difficult physical discipline -- but so is ballet. Classical ballet is a very difficult, complicated, technical physical discipline requiring years of study and hard work to achieve an advanced level and requiring intelligence, strength, and stamina. Ballet is NOT easy. It is among the most difficult movement disciplines --- and it is also an art form.

    I'm a jurior on high schoo,with a respectable dance team\company where I learned different froms of dance(ballet, contemporary, and jazz) but I have always been interested in martial arts first boxing to be exact. I had thoughts on both dance and martial arts are becoming a strong part of my life. To be a fighter and a dancer has been conflicting, but now I can better see how both can work together into personally peace in mind.

      Once after my ballet class, I saw a boy wearing a black martial arts uniform heading towards the class where the teacher stayed behind (still dressed as a dance coach). I asked my friend (the teacher's daughter) what was going on and she said her dad also taught martial arts.
      Her dad wasn't part of any dance company so he did lots jobs. He rented the room we used from an existing dance company. One of his jobs was to help figure skaters with their choreography and artistry. After he moved away to another province to take that job on full time (Montreal), I quit ballet. I was there more for the classroom atmosphere and my friends than for the art.

    • @samuelwong3851
      @samuelwong3851 Před 6 lety

      I cannot tell what martial art he taught but it must have been an eastern martial art. Normally teaching martial arts is not a stable career. And if your heart isn't in learning the "art", perhaps it was not suited for you.

    • @hotjanuary
      @hotjanuary Před 6 lety +1

      samuel wong
      I was there for physical exercise as a hobby. It was the only physical class my parents could get me to go to without complaining (when I was 9, I twisted my ankle playing outdoors. I thought it was a blessing because my parents finally let me quit hip-hop class. I was that type of kid.)
      If my heart was in ballet, I would have practiced my stretches twice a day and did core body strength training every day like you're supposed to if you want stable pirrouettes, high jumps, etc. I only exercised during class (2 hours per week). It was the music that drew me in more than doing the physically demanding moves.
      As it was, when I turned 12, the crime rate in my city increased, my parents forced me to take taekwondo for self defense at our local community center (3 times a week for one hour). I complained every time (their motto was "no pain, no gain" and I'm no masochist.)
      It was no surprise that after 6 months of strength training and stretching in taekwondo that I was able to do solid, slow triple pirrouettes in ballet with ease and hold my relevé positions on one foot. After I quit taekwondo, my ballet strength suffered.
      As it was, the only art that held my passion was fine art (painting/drawing), which I did every chance I got (ballet intrigued me with how beautiful it looked but I liked looking at it more than performing it). But my parents needed to get me to do something physical, as it's incredibly detrimental for humans, especially children, not to get adequate exercise.
      Now, in adulthood, I regret not continuing this type of exercise as it's taking a toll on my back, knees, and neck due to weakened muscles. The medium speed lap swimming i do isn't targetting the muscle groups to the degree i need (the only reason I went swimming). I've started yoga for those afflicted with chronic pain. I'm hoping to regain my health. As much as I hate yoga, it is helping me. That's my only motivation.
      Let my poor life choices be a lesson to others. Don't quit your core body exercises. (If it's your passion, then you're lucky because you have the motivation.) If you lose your passion, then let avoidance of future pain be your new motivation. I'm paying for that now with chronic pain.

    Excuse me? People think ballet is not difficult? And martial art is about hitting other people and getting injured???
    Everyone knows that ballet is not just super difficult, it is physically demanding and it is even more painful in the long term. And don’t leave out the word “art” in martial art, it’s not vile like wresting or WWE, it’s about health, mental strength and it is about beauty too.
    Please don’t simplify ballet and martial arts like that, it’s very disrespectful in my opinion.
    And even if people use the word “feminine” as something insulting, don’t ever let that stop you from embracing your femininity. Femininity is not a bad thing, both you and your haters should know that.
    Sorry that I’m being extra, but it is what it is.

    Honestly, I wouldn't want to be in a fight with a ballet dancer. I mean, they are capable of fighting because the moves they do, they just have to increase the force of the move and its pain city! Plus, they are flexible, which makes it easier for them to avoid being hit, which would end up frustrating and tiring out their opponent, while the ballet dancer is trained to keep a level head and to do difficult movements without tiring out as easily as someone that isn't as flexible. If I had a choice between a professional wrestler or a professional ballet dancer to be on my side during a fight, I'd go with the ballet dancer in a heartbeat.

    Who says ballet dancers are weak? Did you ever see one in person? They are *jacked* . Not an inch of fat on them

    In the States, young football players are often put in ballet because of the translatable skills like balance and attention to form. What a world we could create if we didn’t limit activities to a specific gender, etc.

    Nice video. However, your videos are already super short, why waste that time with a redundantly long intro?

    People still dint realize most professional martial artists are also dancers or take dance classes to improve agility, flexibility and ligament strength.
