I'll always remember Joe Spinell as the first character Bickle meets in Taxi Driver, the mob enforcer in Rocky I & II and the gruff Lt. Munafo in Nighthawks.
@Victor R. I don't know, his romantic performance with Caroline Munro was believable if you put aside all the girls he kills for the rest of the movie..
Joe Spinell was a good friend of my father's. My dad brought Joe to one of my little league games, a woman lost her mind screaming, she was a horror fan and loved Maniac. Prince of a guy they don't make them like those guys anymore. Great actor
The people he knew are absolutely beyond amazing... And almost all of his movies are now considered classics... And when he said he lives with his mom with such pride..... Wow.. !! Had he lived a lil longer.. his success would have grown.... Rip Mr Spinall... And Ty for the memories.... Salute.!
Like Gunnar Hansen's portrayal of Leatherface, Joe Spinell's portrayal of Frank Zito is still watched by fans of the horror genre today, freaking out the new generations, and these films' cult status keeps renewing. I think that says a lot about an actor when people are still talking about their performance 40-50 years later.
One of my all time favorite movies is"" The Seven Ups"÷" with Roy Schneider and Joe played a bad guy, he is fabulous actor and liked by lots of people. So many of the great movies he was in. We didn't get Joe's show where I lived but he was a great host with lots of stars on his show would have liked to have seen it in that time period.
Joe Spinnell is my favorite Horror actor, hands down. He’s phenomenal! Too short of a life RIP. He would have done many more great pictures if he was still alive. I think he would have been a household name.
guyfroml The lady sitting beside Joe Spinell is Catherine Cox, a Broadway actress. Sitting beside her is Michael Rupert, an actor who also worked on Broadway.
Way off the subject of Joe (rip) but in the beginning of the interview they are talking about tipping and that leads me to a question. Why don't black people tip?
There are actually 4 guests in this segment. The lady sitting beside Joe Spinell is Catherine Cox, a Broadway actress. Sitting beside her is Michael Rupert, an actor who also worked on Broadway. Also shown is jazz singer and pianist Freddy Cole. The last guest is former waitress, turned author Cecilia Fusco, who was promoting her book, titled 'Just Tip Me Mister!'
No witnesses. Maybe he was wanting to be with late mom so he ran through the glass door while on coke n booze to numb the pain a bit . Realised it was over soon laid down on his couch and set up a scene from his 1980 doco film. Hey I watch la law so I’m interested in this case. Needs to be reopened
You basing that theory on his bloated neck sweaty bulging eyes and funny as hell Roy Orbison bowl cut. The glasses also give off a classic Dahmer schizo look
Joe was a completely unique actor.. his performance in “Maniac” was very intense.
Great character actor.
Luther Stevens he creeps me the f*** out in that movie
He lived on the ""Highwire"" his whole career.
Joe Spinell is so underrated as a character actor ! When host Joe Franklin lists his wealth of parts .... incredible...
Any show featuring Joe Spinell is a truly special event
I'll always remember Joe Spinell as the first character Bickle meets in Taxi Driver, the mob enforcer in Rocky I & II and the gruff Lt. Munafo in Nighthawks.
Most underated actor ever.
WE lost Joe 25 years ago today. A unique screen presence.
Sad with Spinell, he was a real good dude. Down to earth. Real. Humble. Extremely talented.
How well did you know him?
So many good Italian actors with a unique ability to blur the lines of acting and real life
So glad I found this. Maniac is my movie. My friends and quote it all of the time.
Oh yeah the Joe Franklin show. The best of NYC WOR.
He was great actor. Underrated without any reason. Thanks for video.
You're right! Just a pity he only used to play the supporting roles or extra roles except for Maniac!
Agree.
@Victor R. I don't know, his romantic performance with Caroline Munro was believable if you put aside all the girls he kills for the rest of the movie..
@Victor R. Caroline Munro did.

I cant get enough of Mr Spinnell
Joe Spinell had style for days.
On another note, if those broadway actors ever went to see Maniac they probably fainted
Like Gunnar Hansen's portrayal of Leatherface, Joe Spinell's portrayal of Frank Zito is still watched by fans of the horror genre today, freaking out the new generations, and these films' cult status keeps renewing. Fantastic offbeat character actor and one of the truest, most inveterate Italians you will ever see.
this may have been the best show ever on television....not many locally produced programs like this anymore....
Arch Campbell in DC was pretty cool but not as hip as Franklin.
watched so many 80s horrors when going through movie phases and his performance in maniac stands out

This is a perfect example of three interviews going on at one time. Pure alchemy.
RIP JOE "MANIAC" SPINELL
Joe left us to soon. I love how he worked the system and got paid for the whole Godfather film.
joe is the best for ever
Willy Cicci: Yeah senator, the family had a lot of buffers.
Love Spinell!
And one year later he would do Nightshift with Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton
He was also in the 7 up's in 1973.
willie cicc......great actor....great in rocky too
Joe Spinnell is my favorite Horror actor, hands down. He’s phenomenal! Too short of a life RIP. He would have done many more great pictures if he was still alive. I think he would have been a household name.
family had a lot of buffers senator.....
Great line.
Spinell portrayed a taxicab manager in Taxi Driver, a hit man Godfather 1, a cruel bastard in The Getaway, and other films.
Joe Spinell wasn't in The Getaway (1972). Perhaps you have mixed him up with actor Al Lettieri, who appeared in the film as the main henchman.
good guy r.i.p. joe
Thanks. This is Joe from beyond the grave.
RIP Joe Spinel
Joe is the best, long live the king of nostalgia!
Best From Late Night With Johnny P Show.
He isnt really dead. He just became THE MASTER OF THE WHOOoooOOLE UNIVERSE!
Joe was a total badass, that dude would fight you in a second.
Not wise for a hemophiliac.
Omggg joe if your still around this is "Key Lime Girl" in Key West .we had so much fun so long ago
Joe Franklin died in 2015. Joe Spinell died in 1989.
Mafioso Cicci with the cool 3-piece suit.
R.I.P. Joe Franklin.
Lt.Munafo: You get your hands off me you got that sucker!!!
Not Joe's first movie, he had earlier played Robert De Niro's boss in TAXI DRIVER.
Great actor, actually is a cousin of NFL coach and ex-Giants defensive coach Steve Spagnullo (Spinell's real name is Spagnullo).
Good actor
Prose and Cons sounds like a good concept.
He was also in the Taxi Driver in 1976
Damn thought that was Tony Clifton at first. :)
I was literally just thinking he looks like Clifton.
Manic think he knew some of my method acting teachers
You break those eggs, I'm gonna break your head, Nunzio!
Nunzio is a great film! Is that Mario Mereola as your avatar?
Now a word from our sponsor "Martin Paints"
It ain’t just paint.
Great Actor...
When does the Million Dollar Movie come on?
Will always be mr. gazzo to me
I thought that was Tony Clifton!
lulz :P
I thought that same thing, haha. Not that I thought it was him, but just how much he looks like him.
RIP Gazzo
sweet guys!
You had to like this guy !
Oh yeah, a buffer. The family had a lot of buffers!
Lol!
Joe also had a cameo in the movie Whopee Boys
2:18 Was wondering where that female laugh was coming from.
"Hey..I hear things..."
Are you bustin my chops?!?!?
Joe had the A list talent that night. Lol.
Endingsummer...
What's your claim to fame... besides a Karen decades later
.
Brown was big in those days.
Maniac love movie
That’s my grandpa
Really
"You don't think I hear things"
Omg. Adam Sandlers Doppelganger 😂
"Now you and Tonto'll be here tomorrow, end of story!"
Even for 1980, that couch was horrible.
I was thinking same thing...where they find it in the alley behind the studio
Can you say when in 1980 this aired?
I believe it was 1980.
This was actually from 1981. January 27th of that year, to be exact.
Anyone know who is the couple on the sofa with Joe?
guyfroml The lady sitting beside Joe Spinell is Catherine Cox, a Broadway actress. Sitting beside her is Michael Rupert, an actor who also worked on Broadway.
Thanks :-)
Will Cicci
Way off the subject of Joe (rip) but in the beginning of the interview they are talking about tipping and that leads me to a question. Why don't black people tip?
That's just a stupid question . Some do, some don't. A better question is Why do some people ask stupid questions on CZcams?
The same reason you don't like blacks.
Alan Lloyd The man still deserves an honest answer to his question ;)
Let me do the thinking, OK Rock?
It’s “let me do the figuring”
who were the other 2 guests on the show
There are actually 4 guests in this segment. The lady sitting beside Joe Spinell is Catherine Cox, a Broadway actress. Sitting beside her is Michael Rupert, an actor who also worked on Broadway. Rocky
Taxi Driver
He was killed by his shower door glass when he was cut ✂️
No witnesses. Maybe he was wanting to be with late mom so he ran through the glass door while on coke n booze to numb the pain a bit . Realised it was over soon laid down on his couch and set up a scene from his 1980 doco film. Hey I watch la law so I’m interested in this case. Needs to be reopened
@JimiJop Woodstock ok dude 👌
M mmm m mr Robbie?????
Where is the Fking sound???
AGH ! Joe looks just as creepy here as he did in the movie !
You basing that theory on his bloated neck sweaty bulging eyes and funny as hell Roy Orbison bowl cut. The glasses also give off a classic Dahmer schizo look

Joe is nice actor, i like his movie, rest in peace
"Buffa. Yea. Family had a lotta buffa's senator."
Watching this clip, I'm reminded not only of how great Joe Spinell was, but of how great Joe Franklin and his how was.
