I think the black tights are for contrast purposes, but they’re not complimentary colors, which makes for a pretty ugly combo. Speaking as an artist, I’m surprised they’d choose contrast over a more pleasing color palette.
On a side note, Jordan’s hair looks so cute here! ☺️
Thank you and agree! Aw, thank you 💗 -J
Among adult amateurs, black tights are super popular and you would pair them with black slippers, but you wouldn't usually dye your pointe shoes black to match, because whenever you do get to perform, you'd need the pink pointe shoes (with pink tights obviously) anyway, and most adult amateurs don't have multiple pairs of pointe shoes going at the same time - but keeping one extra pair of pink tights around works. So that's how around a third of my pointe class ends up with black tights in pink shoes. The rest is pink + pink.
Thanks for sharing! Whatever makes you feel the most confident in your classes (within dress code oc) do it ☺️☺️
I just found you last night, so I am going through some of your older videos & enjoying you very much. You are both quite charming. 😊
But because the last time I had a pair of point shoes on I was 10-12 years old, I don’t know much about ballet aesthetics at all. Can you explain why you’re so against black tights? I understand they don’t look good with pink shoes, but you seem to be against black tights independent of what color shoes the dancer might be wearing. If a dancer is wearing a black costume, wouldn’t she also be wearing black tights and shoes? I’m sure there’s a real reason for it but I’m just curious. OK I’m off to watch some more videos. 😊
I just told someone the other day "Plié is everything." And now you said it today, I feel validated 😂
LOLLL TOO FUNNYYY 🤣🤣. Pliés really are everything, that’s why we do pliés first thing every class 🤓🤓
Black tights in shoes: never in the UK. If anyone comes to class like that, they're always a total beginner.
Exactly! Same here in the USA 🤭
One more comment ….the preparation of producing these videos is excellent. The background ballet music, the way you progress the commentary, the delivery of your presentations are just marvelous. You uplift the spirits of all you watch. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Please keep making these videos.
Thank you again for this encouragement!☺️💕👍🏻 Looking forward to more ballet nerding with y’all 😁😁
yes, i love the background ballet music! very nicely interwoven
I love that you want to spread ballet culture, and I wish you luck. I've been trying to educate my friends/debunk ballet myths for over forty years, and just yesterday one of my friends said "Aren't pointe shoes the ones with lead in the toes?" As with any culture, ballet culture can only be understood by being immersed in it, for years.
Hahaha we can def relate 😅😅. But PLS share our videos to spread knowledge on ballet culture. We can all do it together!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻✨✨
Hi ! There is a ballet, Western, by Georges Balanchine, where ballerinas are wearing black tights and black pointe shoes. The outfit, tutus are inspired by the French cancan and the saloon dancers. This ballet is funny, very demanding for the dancers, and the black tights and pointe shoes are making longer and thinner legs. If you can see the original version with the dancer Tanaquil Leclerc, it is even better. She was very beautiful, married with Balanchine, and had to stop dancing very young because she got polio, sad story.
Thanks for your videos, I find them very interesting, I am from Paris, France and I would like to know more about where you are dancing ...
Absolutely, for a more modern ballet and for the context it definitely works. Greetings from Texas USA to France!! 🇺🇸💕🇫🇷
I am pretty sure the dancer in the photograph in the black Leo and black shoes on the stool is Amanda Schull from Center Stage. So yes, a real dancer. Had to giggle when you said she had nice feet as during the movie her “bad feet” was one of the common critiques the teachers had against her.
I actually think that the stock photo with the black pointe shoes is fairly realistic and pretty! The angle and lighting of the shot is giving me very elegant and mysterious vibes from the dancer with the slight monochrome tint and the black dress matching her pointe shoes. Even the slightly messy bun doesn't completely ruin the look. From a certain angle (or at least in my opinion) it actually complements the rest of the vibes in the picture. 😊
Yes, that one is definitely one of the better ones! 😊
Would love it if Part 2 was GOOD dance photography! Because your pointing out how to make it beautiful is very eye-opening. Maybe someday I'll be happy with a photo of me 😊
Thanks for your suggestion! Can def relate with u tho; Don’t worry about making the “perfect” photo, but shoot to document and appreciate your journey ✨. You’re doing great! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
My native language doesn't even have different words for hoses and thights. We just differentiate by "thick" and "think". And they are sometimes worn for classes, depending on person.
Wow! That’s interesting! Thanks for sharing 😄😄
Actually, we don't in British English either. They're either sheer or opaque. Must be a US English thing.
Maybe so! That’s so cool, didn’t realize that the different terminology is so uncommon 🙂
@@jessaglenny We also say either nylon or wool/acrylic - the really thick knitted ones. It's still the same base word though.
In a local production (Baltimore) of a ballet version of "A Christmas Carol," the Ghost of Christmas Future wore black pointe shoes .... and she was absolutely chilling.
Yeah a lot of dancers will dye their shoes for specific roles, especially contemporary companies
black tights and pink pointe shoes are apparently a thing😭☠️
Apparently! 🫣😅
Shouldn't be allowed in the church
I mean, I wear black tights. Black tights are awesome. I just don't wear them with pointe shoes. 🤣
Dang
I cringed at these pics 🤡😭
Eating, very early morning , home made muesli on a Sunday before going off to instruct Tai Chi🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Love your Shades background music for vegie chip munchies😅😅
Mmmm delicious and healthy choice! 😋😋. Shades is such a mood 😎😎
Hello girls great video very very funny 😄😄😄I have a fun fact about socks and ballet shoes, very long time ago while visiting SAB in New York something caught my attention in the ballet class, all the popular girls ( like Zippora Katz for instance ) they use to were socks with point shoes, of course not knee socks but short one just above the ankle enough to contain the ribbons, the socks were very girly, pink or white with a little lace it was really a trend in that time, for me coming from Italy from La Scala theatre was it a very strange trend which I became to like after sometime 💖
Thank you ladies for doing this podcast. I recently, at over age 50 discovered a love for ballet. Your podcast has taught me a lot. Especially your breakdown of Giselle, which I saw a few months later by the ABT company. It was fabulous. I will be taking my future daughter in law to see Cinderella in Raleigh NC in May. She is excited as it’s her first time. I know Cinderella is an age old story, but is there any special nuances to look for? Keep doing what your doing. ❤️❤️ it.
do come back and let us know how your future DIL liked Cinderella
The photoshopped leg! Why? It was beautiful without it!
LITERALLY WHY 🥸🥸
Let's just give the black shoes to the girls wearing black tights, and the pink shoes to the girls wearing pink tights lol.
Haha 😂
Not La Beyadere in the background 😂 I’m in my La Bayadere era rn cuz I just had it for my dance school spring show other than the showcase. I was a little girl in Manu + a Little Fan
My wrists are hurting and so are my ankles because the ribbons are tied wrong!
😂😂
Forced extension en avant...GIVE US ALL A BREAK!..don't waste our time! Ladies of the barre, you are so tolerant, generous and forgiving!
Hahaha thanks 😂😂
Ok so I wear black tights and yoga tops, but I am an ADULT dancer. I like black tights because it’s slimming, and I could always be slimmer… or maybe the studio needs to install skinny mirrors 😂😂🤣 But I do wear flesh-colored slippers because I like the stretchy canvas with elastics already sewn on 🙃
Sounds like a great ensemble! That def agrees with the traditional ballet aesthetic ✨👍🏻
I'm afraid to say that I do wear dark socks in white flats and we have people wearing black tights which I find look better than the pink ones :D
As a fellow Asian, I felt so seen and relatable with the way the chopsticks are held. Also great video XD
Aaayyyy! 🥢🥢😁😁
i'm thinking lots of acro mixed in. let's see!
A good hypothesis. It’s gonna be a fun one! 🤠🤠
The la bayadere music💕💕💕
Iconic ✨💕🙌🏻
I can’t with all the sickled feet 😢
We knowwww 😭😭
I really enjoy learning about ballet🌷☺️
The Constructive criticism is great because it helps us to learn 🌱
the la bayadere music in the bathroom is lowkey stressing me out because i'm performing la bayadere VERY soon but i'm also bopping lolol i loved this video as always!!!
Omggg can totally relate 😂 you’re going to do great!! You got thisss ✨✨✨✨

Saturday evening. Two beautiful and charming ballerinas talking about ballet! What cold be better??
Maybe an idea:
Two beautiful and charming ballerinas telling about ballet and showing us how it is done.
To be honest-
Without ballerinas ballet would be gone a long time ago. Nobody goes to the theater and watches some guys in tights jumping around for an hour. Not even if is would be Nureyev or Erik Bruhn.
It is the pretty girls that sell the concept.
LOL thank you so much ❤️❤️ Always grateful to have y’all ballet nerding here with us. Thank you!!!
I love how dancers hate props meanwhile me in color guard who has to dance with six foot poles plastic rifles and dulled swords
🤣🤣🤣
Can't wait! 😄
Yeeeeee 😄😄 get ready 😎😎
Can we talk about the exposed draw strings? No, No, No, Never.
I loved the red dress photo...minus the photoshopped leg!
Right??? It was so nice before! 😭😭
we need josephine to react!
It's wonderful to have creators like you and Josephine (love your shoutout to TPS!) to make people aware of the discrepancies between dancers and how they're portrayed. Before I watched content like this, I could barely tell the difference -- now, when I see photos like these, I can tell immediately why they're inauthentic. More consumers with a critical eye will lead to more dancers being hired for these opportunities!
Lolz I too believe that chopsticks are the bestest utensil ever ❤
EXACTLY ✨🥢✨
OMG you guys are so optimistic ! I love that
Guys I love your videos, even though I never was and never will be a ballet dancer (I would have loved to), they’re funny to watch and educational, and you seem so gentle and yet very professional. Thank you for your videos ! (Not an English speaker by the way, sorry if I made mistakes, bye guys, take care !)
Aww thank you so much! So glad you find our videos interesting and helpful. Thanks for watching! 😁😁
P.S. Your English is good!! What country are you from?
Thank you ! ❤ I’m French (which is helpful to understand at least the name of the steps !)
Really enjoy your chanel, its very informative. And you are so charming and smart. Btw there is one variation from Flames of Paris - Anna Antonicheva (Bolshoi Ballet) dancing in black points with black ribbons - i think it look nice and fits with her very cool costume :)
Thank you we appreciate that! ☺️☺️. And absolutely agree, for that PARTICULAR variation and costume it works, as she already has the calf-length leg warmer-esque thing going on so the black shoes and ribbons don’t matter so much (but she did well not to paint the elastics for a more streamlined look). Very good point there, thanks for sharing!
Recently subscribed! I really enjoy your channel. Looking forward to Part 2. 🙂
Omg Heyy!! Welcome to the channel!! 🥳🥳. Glad to have u. If you find any ballet stock photos pls send them to us, we’d love to feature them in part 2 🤓🤓
Brilliant commentaries! Please continue these videos. You are bringing not only your knowledge of ballet and your background history but your bright sense of humor for young and old.
this made our day! 😄😄. Thanks so much, we’re glad to hear ur enjoying our videos ✨🙌🏻
I’ve heard often that the black tights are always over the leotard, and usually footless.
That is exactly right. Black footless or stirrup tights are both popular, but always OVER leotard ‼️😆
It’s interesting to hear ballet teachers don’t want you to wear hair ties on your wrists. I was a competitive gymnast and we used to always have at least one hair tie on our wrists (except during meets).
Hahah the culture difference between ballet and gymnastics is huge! 😂😂
Jordan's hairstyle is so pretty!! ❤
Aww thank u!! I call it my “bunny ear” do 😂🐇
our teacher allows black tights and requires us to wear tights in our shoes no matter what color tights because she has had dancers in the past that have gotten foot diseases and different things due to not wearing tights in our pointe shoes
Interesting! 🤔
Insightful, funny, and fun. Thanks!!😊
Thanks!! this one was a blast 😂
@@balletreign I could tell!
Watching you guys on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kanazawa!!
NIIICCCEEE thanks for taking us along for the ride! 😁😁 safe travels!
This was about 13 years ago for me now (!!) but if I recall correctly, the studio I danced at in Madrid had a lot of girls in black tights under their leotards and pink shoes. I felt so out of place with my flesh colored shoes and convertible black tight rolled up to my calf. Oh and yes--they also wore them under the leotard. I could not bring myself to do it.
Enjoyed this; you guys keep coming up with new ideas! I always wonder why the photographer doesn't tell you the angle or line isn't flattering; they're looking directly at what they're shooting, and turn-out or awkward feet, fingers, tension, facial expression, hair, aren't that complicated to see.
It’s hard when both the model and photographer are uneducated I guess 🫠. Thanks for watching and enjoying! 😁😁
There are so many beautiful ballet dancers out there why don't they use them, so many beautiful shots that could have been made. But for entertainment purposes the shots are okay if slightly iffy.
Exactlyyy why aren’t the real dancers the standard? But the iffy shots are what make a more interesting video for y’all 😂
oh YUK!
My dear 🩰 Reign Deers! Yet again, I have learned quite a bit from this video, which I had wrongly assumed would mostly be just having a good laugh at silly photos!
Question: if a dancer goes to a photo shoot, and the photographer wants to have him or her pose in an unflattering manner, would the dancer be able to politely suggest changes for improvement? Or would it depend on the situation and eg. how important the photographer is or how much of a celebrity the dancer is?
I cannot figure out why anybody wanting to take good ballet photos would not at least call up a local studio and ask if they would be willing to provide suggestions. Same with ballet portrayed in TV, movies, or music videos. The only probable reason for not looking into this beforehand would be that the artist person believes themselves to know enough about ballet, or assumes that there is no special knowledge required. 🤡
Here is my qUeStionable contribution: There is a fun K-pop video called “Let’s dance“ by Lee Chae Yeo which starts off with a ballerina wearing red shoes: czcams.com/video/8Z_aqJkIlQw/video.htmlsi=J06XL_AQX8oRLe_M
You’ll have to let me know if you can resist dancing to that song because it is ridiculously catchy!
Thank you so much for another, entertaining and informative video! 🙏😁💐🎯🦋✨
Thank you for tuning in! We’d say that it’s pretty dependent on if the photographer is knowledgeable on dance or not. If they were, they could probably provide pointers on how to make a good shot. If both the model and the camera man are clueless then the results will be… interesting. Thank you for your contribution, def qUeSTiOnAbLe 🤣🤣
@@balletreign Thank you for replying!! 😍🙏🌸💕
Apparently, Josephine from the Pointe Shop is more famous than I thought.
Grape drink and Ginger snap cookies
Omggg that sounds so good 🤤🤤🤤
I pretty much like pink/white tights in the shoe ( rather than naked ) and a black stirrup tight over it. This gives a nice long leg.
Yes it def elongates the leg line! It’s the most classic look ✨💕
Eden and the penguin ❤
Hot take: Eden is secretly a penguin 🤫
Black tights in black shoes is very normal, in pink shoes though…. Only seen baby pointe dancers and balletcore pplz do that 😂
Exactlyyyyy 😂
21:37
As an art student who has taken alot of photography classes: no this doesn't look good from a photography standpoint either xD
I mean they appearently know how to work a camera and use proper lighting but that composition is an absolute mess
The only way I could excuse it is if that awkwardness of cutting off the foot was somehow intentional for artistic expression reasons, but I'm having a hard time coming up with an interpretation that would support that xD
on second thought, the lighting could use some work too
could u react to ballet memes?that would be a fun video idea
I'm snacking on Korean pickled cucumbers. 🥒🥒🥒
Ooohhh delicious 🤤😋
😂😂😂 pt 2 plz😂😂😂
Send us your ballet stock photos for part 2! 😄😄
"The Red Shoes" never looked like this. And the next one is a kindergartener's fantasy of a ballet slipper, on the foot. Following this..not bad as far as a trained dancer being used..it seems....make up borrowed from Natalie Portman.
要抱抱!
✨🤗🤗✨
If you want some really nice 'ballet in urban areas' photos, check out Jordan Matter's channel or pictures. He's a great dance photographer in general.
Thanks so much for sharing! Love ballet in urban shots. This will help those looking for some good shots as well 💗
I think the fluffy short tutu lady could be a circus ballerina? Just a hunch 😂
Maybe lol 😂
The pole shot-How can you worry about elastic on the wrist and then skip over that leading foot/leg? (I am worried about it ALL lol) Just curious...
Love Josephine! U guys should do a x over video lol
7:40 um so either her leg is extremely turned out or it bends the wrong way 😀
15:15 what is this piece of music from? I recognize it but I can’t remember what it’s from and what part of the ballet it’s from. Help!
La Bayadere the intro/entrance to the grand pdd (act 2). Hope that helpsss 😁😁
Fun. 👌👍👩👩👧👧
Thanks!! Glad to hear it 😁😁
M&Ms
Mmmmmmm 😋😋
We have a more modern dance type of class in our "school" and they wear black thighs and because of that our teacher decided to make them wear black pointe shoes instead. So it doesn't look weird, I don't understand how photographers decide to do otherwise, like does it make sense to you, sir?
Interesting choice for sure lol 😆
I am in no way a dancer, so I am coming at these photos with absolutely zero knowledge and there are some that even I thought were questionable.
As for the others, I think that it is down to whatever look the photographer is trying to achieve, what they think looks good is likely completely different to what those with dance knowledge would think looks good.
I feel like the photographers were directing them very specifically raher than letting anyone with dance experience do what they would naturally do. Not the most safe wsy to photograph. I think the pink on black is popular as an artistic choice. But, again I have no dance, nor photographic knowledge, so I could be completely wrong.
PLEASE DO A COLLAB WITH JOSEPHINE/THEPOINTESHOP
NONSENCE, having nothing to do with Ballet!
LOL 😂
