As a musician of 40 years, I can tell you many songs sound alike. Prince thought he had copied the melody to FAITHFULLY by Journey when he finished Purple Rain. He sent a copy to Journey and asked what they thought and they gave him a pass. It is very close......... But, Kenny said Garth admitted he used the idea, and after listening, yes, Garth should have admitted it, and moved on. For whatever reason, I've never bought into Garths overused humility, I don't think its genuine and I could be wrong but I read people well. I don't think hes authentic. Kenny is an artists artist, he is very underated as a singer and songwriter. Hes in a league of his own.

Everything you said about Garth, I've said too. He's fake. Long dramatic pauses when he speaks, expecting people to hang on every word he says, like the wait is worth what he has to say, it must be so important. Just like Glenn Beck. Garth LOVES to talk about himself, he is his favorite subject. Lol! Kenny Loggins is a genius, his career/music shows it. Garth has help to put him on his pedestal. Garth and many others in country music are sell outs. Sirius radio advertising, "New generation of country music celebrating pride month." We need to stop supporting them.

The fact that Garth showed yp to the courtroom with his guitar, just shows how bloated his ego is. He expected his "star power greatness" to wow the judge and courtroom. A man that can't admit to something is not a man.

As a musician of over 40 years I can tell you there are a lot of songs that sound similar in not only tone but in the phrasing. Now Garth may have stated that he copied the "sound" of the song which could mean anything from cord structure to melody but that happens in all genre of music as well as theatrical performances. This is nothing new. listen to Bach or Beethoven you will find similarities in the musical phasings of both composers.
Now don't get me wrong I grew up on Kenny Loggins and have even performed some of his music as well as Garth's music. I respect both artist and this became more than it ever should have.

every creative discipline that requires structure and arrangements will results in similar styles, notes, designs, etc from different artists. For example, there's only a finite variety of shapes , lines, form in designing a car. That eventually every car designers is going to lead to create something that has similar aspects to each other. Want to draw a pencil drawing, there's only so many ways you can draw a pencil artwork that eventually they'll be some similar features from different artists. Yes, as a lifelong songwriter and recording artist myself, I listened to both songs again...and I definitely hear the similarities...and the opening lines of the verses are almost identical "melodically." But there are very clear rules regarding "copyright infringement" on the songs of others. There has to be (if I remember correctly) "eight bars of identical melody and words" to reach the level of copyright infringement. I have no doubt that Garth (intentionally or unintentionally) was influenced by Kenny's song....but IMO...not enough to call it "copyright infringement." Listen, there have been a number of times I have written a song...and the. a day or two later said, "Wait a minute, I think that melody came from another song." It happens. But no...I think Garth could have fought it further and won....but he decided to settle...and that is good on his part....IMO

I never knew this. I listened to Kenny's song, and while both have similar intros, they are completely different songs. I'd think Kenny would be one of Garth's many influences; it's surprising he's never covered "Danny's Song" live, or on his "Blame It All on My Roots" box set that came out nearly 10 years ago.
I prefer "Standing Outside the Fire"; I know a lot of people have connected with that song, because of its inspirational message of overcoming obstacles and determination, as well as its music video.

Yeah, Garth probably used Kenny's song as an outline for his. But when I heard Garths I immediately heard "Shut Up & Dance With Me"
Michael Jackson straight out told Darryl Hall that he stole the beat of "I Can't Go For That" & used it for "Billy Jean" one of the most famous song's of modern day, that helped THRILLER become the highest selling Album of all time! Darryl Hall was honored that his music helped bring about more quality music.
What if Garths song Bombed? I guess if you want to sue, you have every right but always remember there are only 12 notes in music so that's why at times you will hear a song that sounds so familiar or one that sounds like another.
I guessing that this was really about respect more than the song. Kenny was the O.G. & Garth didn't respect that.

It can't possibly be that Kenny loggins is an artist who values his songmanship, and he's writing a bio for sure because he wants to and has the right to, just as if Tucker Carlson wants to write a book. I certainly don't argue with that, he's already written a bunch. But how pathetic that just because you hate the guy loggins, cuz he's a liberal, you cannot possibly imagine that he wants to set the record straight regarding something he authored. You think everything in life is measured by money, but for some people who are artists they actually care about the truth of what happened. I think a lot of stars do that when they are losing their popularity and they are becoming has-beens. It’s unfortunate because they would do much better to stay on the positive side of things and staying on the good side of things instead of dredging up all the issues and hurts. In fact, the comment about paying to get him off his back makes it sound like it was not a valid lawsuit and Brooks just paid him to make it go away, which is not the case. Loggins could actually push the matter and claim damages, I'm sure. Brooks should have just been cool about it to begin with.

I just listened to both of them, I do like them both. I do love Kenny Logging's music I do like Garth's version more.
The only reason this is coming up again is because Kenny wrote about in his book. I would hope he got permission from Garth to write about what happened. The judge said what each had to do, Kenny bringing it up again he is trying to gain the notoriety of the book and upsell himself so everyone reads the book. It should have stayed in the past a stunning gone, now Kenny wants to bring it up and out in the open, that sure sounds like a vendetta to me. Not what you entertainers should do or discuss in public or even bring back up after it was dropped so many years ago. It is sad that Kenny is doing that and I've lost a little respect I used to love his music.
Best of luck to both of them.

What is just plain dumb and ridiculous is bring up old news that really doesn’t make news, rather, white noise. Show me a clear cut case of ripping off an “artist” and then, I could give a damn. Sure there are similarities and a lot of songs have them. To all of you questioning Garths humbleness and sincerity, if you don't know the guy that is ignorant. I don't know him personally, but any mega star that shows up at their kids soccer game on a Saturday morning in small town Oklahoma without major security and talks to anyone that comes up to him is pretty down to earth. I lived in the town where his daughters played soccer every now and then. My boys played at the same fields and I saw him there more than once. I never went up to him because as a parent I just wanted to watch my kids and I felt he deserved the same respect.

Thanks for the clip. I just read Kenny Loggins’ nine year old book. So maybe I’m late to the dance here. Thought l would weigh in
Garth Brooks is an icon; however, I grew up listening to Loggins and Messina. They’re one of my favorites as well as Kenny Loggins solo. So I have a bias here. As someone commented on this thread: “Songs will eventually have similarities since ALL music is composed of ONLY eight basic notes!” I believe songs are sometimes inadvertently plagiarized and sometimes it’s deliberate. According to Loggins, Brooks admitted that he copied the song. If that story is true Garth should have handled it differently. At the least discuss it with the songwriters (as other artists have done) before it’s release. I’m not sure what Kenny’s true gripe was/is. Would he have wanted compensation if Brooks would have discussed it before its release? Was it Brooks’ attitude that he felt compelled to sue him and much later tell the story? I do have to admit after reading the story in Loggins book it lowers my impression of Garth Brooks.

I have listened to both songs a few times and for me it's a stretch trying to find any real similarities between the two. There was a guitar strum beat in the beginning that was close but the chord changes immediately after were completely different. I would never think listening to either song that hey that song sounds like so and so's song. It must be something in the melody that I don't hear they are trying to reference because the words and the style are very different.

Curious that Jenny Yates is not mentioned at all since she is listed as a co-writer on the song. I would think she would have to be implicated by the settlement as well. Alternatively, if a song already has two collaborating writers, I would think that adds a layer of accountability that would make any form of intentional plagiarism or music-stealing more difficult. But he did admit it (unless that is not verified)
