  • This video is a follow-up on my previous video about the imperative in Dutch. While the conjugation for the Dutch imperative is very straightforward we often use small words called modal particles like "toch", "maar", "eens", "even" or "alsjeblieft" in combination with the imperative to slightly change the meaning.

    One says: 'Ga nou toch eindelijk eens een keer slapen', has a hint of desperation, exhaustion and frustration in it. I love how we combine these modal particles to make it even a bigger mess.

    LOL you are very good at explaining the nuances of these words, thank you!!
    I’ll add that I laughed out loud at the “it’s dynamite y’all” at the end ahahaha. Msg me if you want an explanation for the nuance of that expression! ;)

    Deze video was zo zo zo duidelijk en heel nuttig voor mij. Ik heb veel keer geprobeerd om naar een goeie uitleg te zoeken voor deze woorden, maar ik heb ze nooit gevonden. Dankuwel!
    Zou "nou" ook in de lijst kunnen staan? Misschien is "nou" vaker gebruikt in Nederland dan in België. Dag!

    Hoi Nout! Ik ben Anton die uit Indonesië komt. Ik vind al jouw videos heel erg interessant en behoorlijk nuttig om mijn nederlands te verbeteren. Als ik mag voorstellen, zou je alsjeblieft een video over "stopwoorden" willen maken. Bij voorbaat bendankt.

    I've heard Dutch sentences where the abbreviation a.u.b. is used. Is this common?

    • @DutchGo
      @DutchGo  Před 4 lety

      This is normally used only in written language as an abbreviation for "alstublieft" (formally) which means either "(if you) please" or "there you go". Rarely (or not very often or common) in spoken language.

      @@DutchGo Thanks for the clarification. When I first saw "aub" I had no idea it was an abbreviation. I had a similar experience when I first heard "tuurlijk" and never realised it was an abbreviated form of "natuurlijk". It's all part of the language learning process :)
