- Sometimes Konami, the makers of Yu-Gi-Oh, print a card in their trading card game that creates some issues. To solve it, Konami has a system of re-writings to fix past sins. With Digital Formats like Master Duel now present, errata'ing has never been easier. Let's take a look at some of those historical 'errata' (singular: erratum).

I miss the old Ritual Spells saying "Offer 1 or more Monsters as tribute whose combined stars equals or exceeds X". Crazy! Also the Man-Eater Bug's "Regardless of Position". It will come into play when they annouce the new Burst Position, that Burst Monsters can be in. They're announcing this in like 9 days.
What burst position is!?
@@asafesseidonsapphire It's where you balance a card on its side, to unlcok it's Burst effect and allow it to reach its Burst ATK. Burst attacks always do Burst Damage (Flame Wingman). If you assemble your cards into a pyramid, you get some crazy effects going off - like a U-Link.
A note about Rituals that I hate
They aren't translated properly even today.
Equal or Exceed implies you could use 50 lv1 monsters to Ritual summon any monster level between 1 and 12
But even though they EXCEED the levels
Ritual summoning actually means:
Monsters who's level equal or exceed *BUT CAN NOT USE MONSTERS WHO'S LEVELS ARE UNNECESSARY TO EQUAL THE LEVEL OF THE RITUAL MONSTER*
If I want to go -4 for a ritual summon I should be able to.
@@IC-23Want something more confusing ? You can't summon 0 ATK monsters with the drytron spell since you need to tribute something, but even 0 ATK monsters would be considered overpaying.
I'm so excited for Burst Summoning! Sending one Malicious from the side deck to the burst deck, then from the burst deck to the graveyard as material is going to be some great consistency support for Hero decks, which have always been underappreciated in new set releases.
RIP Darkness Approaches flipping cards down to face-down ATK position.
Oddly enough, [at one point] the Duel Links version of Darkness Approaches still mentioned the possibility of face-down Attack ... but forces face-down Defense instead.
I'd have to check to see if the rules text was ever updated in DL.
My favorite consequence of the magic->spell change is how multiple videogames (including Master Duel) have created Dark Spellian through injudicious use of find/replace

Changes own name to "Frog the Jam"
The weird thing about PSCT is that it was only necessary because the USA staff were messing around so much. In the OCG there are sometimes gameplay erratas, the actual syntax of the PSCT has been a part of the OCG since even before their own Legend of Blue Eyes format. Upper Deck and later the Konami localization staff just decided to not follow the precise syntax for whatever reason. Maybe the precision of rulings just never came up on the USA team's radar since they never had to deal with anything like the series 1 Sangan, Witch, Last Will BS that resulted from imprecise card text.
I bet someone at the USA branch suggested, "How about 'Toad Jam'?" and another person said, "But there is always the possibility of a 'Slime' archetype in the future. Marik used Slimes. That one-off GX duelist used Slimes." a third said, "Yeah, but it would be funny." and got a few death glares.
Slimey Toad, easy.
Surprised you managed to not mention the King of Errata, Necrovalley. Seven errata just to explain what the card does, followed by an eighth to bring it's text in to line with all the others.
So the thing about that is that Necrovalley's erratas don't "explain what the card does", each errata wound up fundamentally changing how the card played.
Errata 4 and 5 allowed cards to leave the graveyard by their own effect, even if they did activate. Errata 7 and 8: *If it doesn't activate, I do not see it.*
Not having line breaks on Yugioh cards will forever hurt my soul. It makes it seem like some effects happen only if everything prior on the card also happened; like does Neo Space Connector do the tribute portion of it's text box only after it was normal summoned and only if you also did the special summon clause in it's text box? Just have those on separate lines.
In their defense, the texts are already small. If you make linebreaks, the extra waste blank space will get bigger and the texts will get smaller.
If they follow the ocg text formatting, at least they can seperate effects for easier reading.

The funny thing about Magic card becoming Spell card, is that in the french version of the game, they never changed, it's always been Carte Magie
in italian its Carta Magia. I guess we dont need to worry about the Wizards.

-playing yugioh is a situation, and the card getting an erata is also a situation.
One thing in life you can be certain of is that yugioh players, besides not reading, also don't know that the singular of "errata" is "erratum".

the one card i miss the old card text of is Darkness Approaches, since it could theoretically put monsters in face-down attack position:
"Discard 2 cards from your hand. Select 1 face-up monster and flip it face-down, *but do not change its battle position* ."

Harpie's Brother, a card I used a lot back in the day, was changed to Sky Striker, in order to not be part of the Harpies Archtype.
it's actually sky scout not sky striker (which is a completely different archetype btw). Also as someone who plays harpies I can tell ya rn, even with modern support sky scout (formerly known as harpies brother) wouldn't really be any good in harpie decks really anyway. since the deck already has an 1800 atk vanilla that they can summon from deck. but then again harpies brother wouldn't lock you out of using multiple copies unlike the 1800 vanilla the deck currently runs so that's a plus I guess.

as a "newer" player I always thought I would die before knowing what Errata really meant, glad to see someone explain it. now there only like 20 others yogioh concepts that I will die before fully understanding.
Don't worry there is more to learn yugioh is the dark soul of card games one of the reasons I started a pure yugioh teaching channel to explain the game to newcomers and returning players. But alas this game even though I've played it since release I still feel this game is the hardest card game in the world, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise😅

Honestly I prefer "spell card" over "magic card". "Spell" brings to mind an action used with magic, while "Magic" is vague and nebulous

i dont get why alien infiltrator would get an erata when there is a clear distinction between the extra monster zone and the main monster zone. this eratta woulld just cause more confusion in my opinion

They probably made Infiltrator that way to prevent it from entering the EMZ. Konami really doesn't want anything going there if it wasn't summoned from the Extra Deck. Look at Senet Switch for instance.
I like how the most of this didn't effect German Yu Gi Oh, because words used for translation made more sense therefore never needed a re print. We always had the same word for Spell Cards for example
I love how Mask of Restrict sounds like the designer of that card went to a Yu-gi-oh turnament the day before, discovered all the crazy gamer lingo and discussions on gamestates and was having non of that shit.
I still find it funny that some made the theory that "Frog the jam" would be too OP with that name and started making ftk strategies with it🐸

People need to stop trying to propose erratas for Maxx "C". Konami only makes those kinds of erratas for cards on the OCG banlist, sometimes even when the card is unlimited in the TCG (Goyo Guardian for instance). Maxx "C" is at 3 in the OCG so they will not errata it.

Ah yes, the roids stealing everything. However, my favourite accidental archetype support is HundRED-EYES Dragon (it got an erratum to become Hundred Eyes Dragon, despite being utterly useless in Red-Eyes)

That maxx c idea sounds good on paper but naw... last thing I wanna see is Tearlaments get another way of activating on your turn since technically it is being sent to gy by card effect.
and if it banished instead when discarded like they brought up as a secondary way of letting the discard part be not as bad, then instead of tearlaments benefitting from the new maxx c change, thunder dragon, kashtira, and other banish based decks like metaphys, floowandereeze etc, now have a 1 card starter on the opponents turn that allows them to start their turn with a full hand of 6 plus whatever effects they used to give themselves more cards from the cards they banished.
Some call a Errata 'retrofit', some Erratas are what I call a 'RetroSHIT'.

It always kind of bothers me when people talk about how Frog the Jam was excluded from so many Frog effects but they don't explain why. It results in a lot of new players thinking it's some weird balancing issue, like they thought Konami was terrified of the synergy this Normal Monster would wreak. No, it's just because it's called Slime Toad in Japan, so it was never meant to work with the Frog archetype which came years later. The English translators just thought calling it Frog the Jam would sound cool and thought nothing of it. It would be weird if a Frog card couldn't affect Slime Toad in Japan but could in America. So they just fixed it. This is the same reason why Summoned Skull gets printed with _(This is an Archfiend card)_ now. It's not like they did that as a buff to make Summoned Skull work better with this unrelated archetype, it was _always_ technically a part of that archetype regardless of what stupid shit we called it.
The irony that Problem Solving Card Text ended up solving fewer problems with more text.
It solved a lot of problems. If you actually learn how it works, you can deduce most modern card interactions just from reading the cards involved. Before PSCT, you had to look up rulings for even the simplest things, like knowing whether a specific card discards for cost or effect.

Frog the Jam and all the vanillas still puzzles me. Like, why? a vanilla monster that does nothing? Maybe, just maybe if it was like a 100K attack vanilla monster? What harm does adding a vanilla monster to an archetype?
Because in Japan it’s not a Frog. It’s not supposed to be compatible with Frog stuff, even if Slime Toad is garbage.
It's for parity between OCG and TCG, that's pretty much it.

Maxx c is not broken, its the new cards that are briken because konami decided to make SS in literally 99% of the meta deck...how is it balanced that on first turn if your enemy pulls of a 60 min combo with at least 6 cards on the field can get away with still having 5 cards in the hand lol, master duel has maxx c with def no problem, id say you complainin about not pulling your combo because u let the opponent draw is a bad thing...in reality, the new meta sucks if you dont have at least half of your deck with hand traps your fucked
