Is a blocked Catalytic converter causing the running issues on my 2005 R53 Mini Cooper S??

  • I've bought a 2005 R53 Mini Cooper S from Copart with the description stating it had a undiagnosed noise from the engine bay. After getting the car, I quickly discovered a very strange noise on lift off and a lack of power. After a bit of research, its pointing towards the timing being out, so I previously changed the timing chain. I then serviced the supercharger and replaced various gaskets that were leaking. But neither of these fixed the issue. So, after some comments on previous videos stating my catalytic converter may be blocked, I investigated and hopefully fix the problem.

That’s parts of the flexible section not part of the cat, the flexible is made up of a stainless steel inner with a braided outer, it shouldn’t flex unless the inner has failed

Genuinely cant hear anything wrong. I know these minis inside and out blindfolded. Maybe its just the audio but i dont hear anything.

I've got a 2009 mini one it was running rough , was over fueling ,I figured out it was the o2 sensor,it wasn't bringing up the fault code for o2 sensor I change both got the car running and ticking over

Check the bypass valve, these tend to be left open so the gasses go in the intake. Change that out and check again

I did check the bypass valve when I serviced the supercharger, but think I’d might be worth checking it again!

Does it still blow up the exhaust flexi?
I think a compresion check and fuel pressue if its exsessive fuel pressure it can cause alot of wierd things and can damage to the cat and o2 sensor .
Does your mini have valvetronic ?

I’m 99.9% sure that’s not an oem exhaust. The Cat was quite stubby with normal Coke can sides, they can still block up but this one looks rather sub standard

Completely agree! Have been looking for a OEM CAT for the MOT test (Yearly test if you’re not in the UK) and they look very different!

I have a code for p0108 manifold absolute pressure. Am thinking this could be the issue.

@@olliesgarage yeah man, have ordered tmap and map sensors which should arrive soon, however a friend of mine had the same codes which were because his cat squashed up and blocked the exhaust. Thinking the same has happened as I have the same symptoms, also that would mean the sensors are working correctly… hopefully it’s an easy ish fix 🤞
