    I honestly can't believe that I've found this film after seeing it one night in the early eighties, occasionally thinking about it ever since, and then dedicating a whole night to track it down! I can't wait to watch this again!

These actors, that's an army of best of the best from one very strong period (unfortunately, today... the situation is not any good. Most of the young Czech actor "stars" are quite tragic).

    Just wondering about something: when playing Germans, do the Czech (?) actors change their accents? I'm a native English speaker and don't know any Czech language but I don't get a sense that there are different accents between nationalities in this film. It seems only to be a conceit of the Anglosphere in movies. (Honestly, it makes me cringe!)

    • @CzechMirco
      @CzechMirco Před 10 měsíci +1

      Nope, they all speak normal Czech. The German characters pronounce the German given names (Steinberger, Wolf) with passable German pronunciation, which is not difficult since most of the actors knew Geman language fairly well in their youth. Also the historical figures tend to speak with curt rhythm and diction but that is more due to their military roles than to the fact that they are Germans. The American characters try to pronounce the American place names (Chicago, Watergate) with American pronunciation but with much less success.
      And I absolutely agree with you. The obsession with accents (both foreign and regional) in the Anglosphere and especially in the UK is bewildering. We have been always taught in schools that the most popular topic for small talk in the UK is the weather. But I must disagree. Brits can talk for HOURS about different regional and foreign accents, in movies (51st State with Samuel Jackson), in panel shows (QI, Would I lie to you, Big Fat Quiz..., Celebrity Juice), chatshows (very popular topic in Graham Norton show, see Christopher Pratt doing TOWIE impersonation).
      Here in Czechia only a character who is a foreigner and speaks Czech has an accent and especially in older movies it tended to be ridiculously over the top almost as a caricature. Actually to have foreign characters who are supposed to speak in their own languages to speak Czech with their native accent would be very jarring and would have break the immersion.

    • @CzechMirco
      @CzechMirco Před 10 měsíci

      Btw one small funny example: In one episode of House M.D. House meets Chase's father and says: "Thats an interesting accent, you have there. I'd say Czech with about 30 years of Aussie" and the character confirms that the emigrated to Australia decades ago from Czechoslovakia. Of course there is not even a shred of Czech accent in his speech. The actor was Belgian, he of course had no idea what Czechs speaking English sound like and he mixed some German or Dutch with a slight attempt at Russian, neither of which sounds even remotely similar to Czech.

      Aehm, this is still (again) December 8th, 1941. Germany is winning and USA hasn't even entered the war. This Gestapo stooge certainly doesn't understand English and doesn't know what a hydrogen (or even atomic) bomb is, as neither has been invented yet. To him it looks like some small explosive device designed to assassinate Hitler - which is exactly what Bureš told them on their radio-frequency a moment before.
