Great film but heart-breaking to see Southport now compared to this!

Fantastic what a wonderfully serene decade the 50s was- where family values and morals were at their highest.

I live in Southport, it's a crying shame how it is now, shabby, dirty, none of these amusements left, pier is closed, most of shops gone. A once beautiful town left by councils to rot.

Having had childhood holidays in Southport during the 50s and 60's (where we had relatives, including some called Mort on Heathfield Rd!) this brought many happy memories, but I must admit that when I last visited around 15 years ago it had lost a lot of its air of refinement. Ho hum,

Sefton Council has neglected Southport massively. Its a rundown city. The hospital, I worked, I counted my days to get out. Nurses shortage was attempted to fill by bringing loads of nurses from India. Although the nurses were pleasant their jobless husbands and screaming children ran wild in the local community. Despicable.

As others have said it's a lovely reminder of better times for the town

Remember going to Southport with then girlfriend in 1959 - both of us young - and innocent. Times have changed.

Those were the days! A great advertising film, with a clear speaking voice (BBC announcer).

Things are worse now than they ever were in the fifties sixties. The system is rotten to the core. 🇬🇧

I would have gone to Southport in 1956 when I was 8 . Enjoyed the outdoor baths but the water wasn,t that warm. It was a great fun venue.

Absolutely wonderful film! Not quite Southport's (much) earlier 'golden years', but certainly better than its current years. Ever the optimist, let's hope these past few decades will be shown to be a blip in Southport's history. Better years to come?.....

Get this - the McDonalds in Southport Town Centre closed some years ago. That's where we are now. Dwindling footfall and a town in decline. Just today Wilko's closing down sale. Ghost Town...

So devastating to see how much grandeur, splendour and opulence Southport has lost since then.

It isn't - only Birkdale and Churchtown are still half-decent. Very sad. Rubbish politicians and the dumbing down of people's values and expectations have made the resort of Southport a holiday desert devoid of any sort of quality family fun.

Agree. Decan has not visited Southport in 2020s.

I moved to Southport in 1986 from London it was a very lively place back then NOT now I am afraid it’s declining rapidly in lord street there about 30 shops CLOSED the town is being left to decline lord Street is dead hardly nobody shops there anymore I remember Southport when you hardly had room to walk in lord street now is becoming a GOUST town.

A ‘bygone’ era, actually not that long ago. One or two generations ago.
I much simpler time - rationing had gone by 1953/4
Everyone used to go to these towns by the sea. Everyone looked well dressed and wore a hat, both men and women.
    Look at Southport now ☹️☹️🫤🫤😗😗👎👎👎👎
