Lost in Trafaria & Cova do Vapor - FISHING VILLAGES Near Lisbon 🇵🇹

  • I take the bus to Trafaria, Portugal to explore this small fishing village across the Tagus River from Lisbon. I find an abandoned military fort (5ª Bateria da Raposeira) with huge guns that were built to protect the Lisbon Harbor from enemy ships. Now it's a great place to explore and see graffiti. While in Trafaria I found a quaint little place to eat lunch with a view of the towns main square. I was surrounded by locals and didn't see another tourist the entire day.
I then walked over to one of the most interesting and unique neighborhoods in all of Portugal; Cova do Vapor on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. This little community is amazing with little ally ways leading every which way. One of the most unique neighborhoods in Portugal.
Between Trafaria and Cova do Vapor are some poor neighborhoods that I can only describe as slums. Once again, this neighborhood was unlike any I'd ever seen in Portugal. The people I met were all very friendly.
While waiting for the bus to leave I decided at the last second to take the ferry to Porto Brandão and had to run across town to try and catch the ferry that was scheduled to depart in 5 minutes! Did I make it?

I can't believe that the gun turret swung around so quietly after all these decades or that it even swung around at all. And it looked fun.
I can't believe how lucky you were to make the ferry. 👍

Yeah, especially since the lady trying to buy a ticket before me took forever trying to figure out how to use the machine.

Loved your video! I can't believe your "Disneyland" even had rides! 🤣 You should make your own tag!! But then that would require you to carry around a spray paint can everywhere, and I don't think you even carry a water bottle with you... 😜

Very interesting video! It was so funny to see you swinging around on that gun arm! There were so many tiny alley ways, it looked like you could barely fit through them. How big were they in real life? Are their back doors where you were walking, or was that their front doors? I've never seen anything like it. 🎠

The alley ways really were as small as they look, and those were the front doors to most of the houses.

Feel like I keep doing this on your videos, but maybe for next time... the abandoned prison in Trafaria is worth the effort. Went for Open House and although there were lots of people it was spectacular. You got it on camera upstairs as the ferry was leaving. The other big abandoned building on the hill above Porto Brandao is "O Lazareto Novo de Lisboa" which was apparently a quarantine hospital. I never got access but they also did tours as part of Open House. Enjoyed the video, I did pretty much the exact same routes when I was there.

Thanks for the comments my friend. I love the insider tips you give. I would have loved to visit both those places but didn't have any idea how to.

@@RyanThayne Those two beat me as well. I spent a day sniffing around Lazareto but all access points were blocked. This video was a bit tough to watch as I moved back to the UK last week, but nice to see another's take on the same places.

I liked it a lot, but it didn't seem very touristy. What were you doing there?

@@RyanThayne I had the opportunity to be hosted by my childhood friend who is from Guinea bissao, there is a huge lusophone african community from Angola, Mocambique, cap verde etc...it seems quiet but there is even a night club, and had every day street barbecue, they took me to costa caparica!! TRAFARIA is a hidden gem

What a cool little trek! All of the graffiti was so beautiful, and the buildings and homes so interesting. Admittedly when you were exploring those dark, tight hallways I was clenching a bit 😅 I found it interesting that the homes and towns were so colorful but everyone wears black, haha. You seem very comfortable and familiar with Portugal, how did you come to travel there and learn the language? Sorry if this is established lore for your channel, I’m new here 😆 Enjoyed the video a lot!

Thanks for a great comment Mandi! Haha, you're right, I never really thought about the contrast between the black clothing and the colorful houses. Although traditional portuguese houses are just white washed and not very colorful lol. As for "established lore" 😆My channel is new here as well, so you're actually the first person to ask me that. I lived in Portugal for a little over a year 22 years ago. I thought it would be fun to return and see how its changed in the past 2 decades and see more of the country since I do speak a little portuguese (horribly I'll admit).

@@RyanThayne Thanks for replying! That's so awesome you lived there for a time, and I bet it's been interesting to see the changes. I'm excited to check out your other videos in Portugal, as well! Some of the streets reminded me of Mexico, I visited several years ago, my husband's home town. I LOVED it there, everyone hugged me and fed me so I was in heaven, haha!

@@mandimal Yeah it was crazy because some things looked/felt exactly the same, and other things were so different. That's so cool you got to visit Mexico, and have your husband be your tour guide! Mexico has so many amazing places, but alas I've never been (Cabo doesn't count 😂)

Your videos are fun to watch. Best part is your interaction with the people, the worse I would have to say is that silly little hair cut you have.
