Dolphin Shoals - Mario Kart 8 *Full Big Band Jazz Fusion version* ft. Bryan Carter

- Drummer supreme Bryan Carter is featured in this high energy Jazz fusion Big Band arrangement of this modern video game music classic - "Dolphin Shoals" from Mario Kart 8 which has one of the internets' all time favorite sax solos that also contains a particularly note worthy be-bop lick you may already know and love :)
I took that lick and expanded it for the whole band and sax section, as well as tried to add in other "dolphin" related Jazz quotes such as Dolphin Dance and On Green Dolphin Street. See if you can find them!

Giving the entire band the famous solo kick IS CRAZY from an ensemble writing perspective 🤯🤯🤯
like four times, too 😂
It certainly felt very "REMEMBER THIS?"
IDK, this arrangement really doesn't do it for me. Feels... weird? Too busy? I think the good thing about the original song is how clean it is, this is just muddy and a bit obnoxious.
@@RDR911 honestly i think thats kind of the point. it's such an iconic lick/meme in the vgm jazz community, and as someone who was only until recently in high school jazz band i can tell you that everyone in my ensemble has tried to play it once, regardless of whether or not they've even touched mario kart. imo, this arrangement is really vindicating for young jazz and vgm jazz enthusiasts and represents the fun and unifying aspects of the community. even if it sounds kind of busy and arbitrarily full at some parts, seeing the dolphin shoals run played by so many people at such a high skill level in a creatively unique context is awesome
Them pulling it off is more crazy🤯
The interpolation of the famous solo into a modern arrangement is actually something I first heard in gypsy jazz! Modern manouche guitarists play Django Reinhardt's solo as the new "head" over Django's Tiger - it's always badass when it happens and it happens well, just like in this case where they play ALL the major parts of the original solo!!
I love how The Lick is turned into a motif throughout the song in this arrangement.
It has to be. Otherwise it’s a fail. Give the people what they want.
I would call it the Mario kart lick cuz the lick is smth different
@@q12aw50 this lick is better than the Adam Neely one tho…
@@Blatantist 🤦♂️ it’s not the “Adam neely” lick
@@q12aw50 i dont think he knows what licks really are
The sprite work is GENIUNELY incredible, like who u got doing these animations
We have a team of people but this one was done by the amazing @SovanJedi check him out!!
@@The8BitBigBandcan you try plack beach from bowsers inside story? Or anything else from that games song list? I feel there are a lot of good choices
@@cringedetector5560I second this comment
Absolutely, they are always so fun to watch!! 1:31 was my favorite when Link ran across the keys hahah
The Luigi Death Stare though!!!
I love how in the intro I caught myself rolling my eyes at the lick and I had to remind myself that this is the actual song it’s from
Is the mario kart lick the new the lick?
What
@@FunkBastid look up mario kart lick by saxologic
@@Coolkid245 I’ve seen it, but I don’t know how big a splash it made.
@@FunkBastid massive. basically saxologic's video gained a whole bunch of views out of nowhere which caught the attention of insainintherain and adam neely. it got even more popular when they and a few other musicians contributed to the meme, and since charlie rosen (leader of 8-bit big band) is a friend of them and also wanted to partake, he added it to his arrangement
It must be freezing in that studio because I just can’t imagine a drummer playing like that while wearing a sweater and not just dying. Such an amazing performance!
Brian is just a cold dude
Im so glad this song fits into the canon of dolphin jazz in the key of Eb
Hahaha how come dolphins like Eb so much??
@The8BitBigBand I don't know, but honestly, I can't really argue with them. 1, because their dolphins. 2, because Eb is easily within the top 5 key signatures.
Mind is being blown by the rhythm section, amazing job everyone
I love how the solo is so iconic it’s basically just being treated as the melody for this arrangement
The 8 Bit Band: What if we had the Mario lick, but times 10? Great work as always!
Im a simple man. I see Mario Kart and 8 bit band, i click
AMAZING ARRANGEMENT but I also like how at 1:26 the Donkey Kong sprite bounces off of Zac zingers sax like the other pipes
I don't even know what they make but give that sprite artist a raise! They went crazy on this one
Give that bass guitar some love, that bassline SLAPS
When a lick becomes so esteemed it becomes a soli: case in point.
The WHOLE BAND doing that sax solo??? I haven't heard a brass section that tight my whole life! Amazing work as always, 8BBB!
This is such a flex. The "Dolphin shoals lick" is supposed to be the pinnacle of soloing, this crazy thing that only happens when a top player is unleashed. But you just made the whole band play it, in unison or in jazz harmony, like a dozen times.
Well, sort of. It was an impressive lick precisely because it was likely improvised or developed during the recording process, and was being performed at a breakneck tempo. That context is a big part of why it impressed people. It's a great solo, no doubt, but I do think you're overselling it a bit. I'd say any musician who's gone through tertiary education in music performance ought to be able to replicate it with practice, especially if it’s been notated for them.
This is not to diminish the talent of the musicians in the 8-bit big band, of course. They’re all excellent musicians. I'm not at all surprised they can all perform it. I think Kazuki Katsuda is an excellent performer, but people treat him as if he's in a league of his own, as if it's surprising that other people can replicate his solo.
If Kazuki Katsuta (the original saxophonist in Dolphin Shoals the saxophonist for the J-Fusion band Dimension) saw and heard what you did to his lick by making it a motif in your arrangement, I bet he'd be proud. I also love how you incorporated On Green Dolphin Street into this! Absolutely genius! The sprites were pretty cool too!
Where are you hearing On Green Dolphin Street? I heard dolphin dance at the start but not that
@@q12aw50 During the alto sax and drum solos. You can hear it in the chord changes.
Honestly he'd probably be like "damn they really couldnt figure out their own arrangement? weak."
@@RDR911 I wouldn't be so sure. Japanese composers and musicians get a kick out of what people do to their songs. They'd either be confused and think "what the heck is this" or they'd see that it's a labor of love to know that their work is so loved like this and be moved emotionally. Have you no heart?
@@victoriabell9546yeah cook em victoria
I'm loving the incorporation of the, "On Green Dolphin Street" changes as well as the sax and definitely the percussionist. Amazing composition
haha, they also snuck in some references to Dolphin Dance throughout the tune🔥
Where?? I hear dolphin dance not green dolphin street
@q12aw50 once at 0:26, 2:23, and 2:37
@q12aw50Q The chord changes of Green Dolphin Street are used throughout. Most notably the sax solo.
I heard that too!
Really nailed that T-Square/Dimension vibe in the drum solo section! Loved it!
Oh my gawd! Never heard so much licks in one song ever! That was beyond level 10,000! What a great job!
Wow Zac's tone is so reminiscent of these crazy fusion alto japanese players, it was such a good call to put him in the solo sections for this arrangement
I clicked this video thinking to myself "it would be kind of cool to hear a licc soli" AND THEN IT HAPPENED IN THE FIRST 30 SECONDS RAD!
Edit: turning it into a motif through the whole piece without it becoming too gimmicky is a wildly cool arranger flex!
The Luigi death stare at 1:14 is hilarious 🤣
0:28 that Dolphin Dance quote fits so well and always makes me smile!
Love the “on green dolphin street” nod, it’s my favorite standard to play!
I'm hearing dolphin dance. You might be confusing the two. Perhaps there is both and I am not noticing the dolphin street stuff
@@liammcelroy2265the description mentions that both dolphin songs were quoted
OK after further listening, I don't even know how I missed green dolphin street the first time lol
@@liammcelroy2265WHERE???💀💀

I saw the title and was very excited, this is one of MK8’s best songs. You can hear it and think “this is for a children’s’ racing game??”
it being a childrens game doesnt matter in the slightest lol look at any mario game
@@silverreaps6803 I know that, I’m just talking about from the perspective of someone that doesn’t play video games or is aware that music transcends medium
@@rollinallonce fair
The saxophone section playing in this is TO DIE FOR. Lol. So effing good. Bonkers good ensemble sound and technique. Total command of the horn, great ensemble awareness and blending. That's how you should sound, kids. 👍
Love the dolphin dance ref ❤
This arrangement is amazing! I never imagined Dolphin Shoals being this difficult to play, but everything really pops.
The unison that the band plays with… this must’ve required a lot of effort!
omg the original lick makes an appearance too, this is insanity!
The 8bit big band never disappoint ❤❤❤
Legendary performance here, guys! Dolphin Shoals is one of my favorite songs from MK8 and this perfectly captures why!
WE MAKING IT OUT OF DOLPHIN SHOALS WITH THIS ONE
i've waiting for this moment!
This is maybe in the top 3 arrangements in the entire 8BBB catalogue! Recording came out PHENOMONAL. The wait for this one paid off!
This is AMAZING!! Not only is the arrangement absolutely phenomenal, but those animations were insanely good! Some of the best music and animations you guys have ever put out in my opinion!
These animations are so fun and expressive! And there’s so much custom work done on them! Wow!
1:57 THE LICK, YOURE WELCOME
XD??
The song is so epic as it, this version is super epic! Saw the title and I half expected Saxologic to be there as well for double the featured artists.
Been waiting for this one for a long time
ABSOLUTE BRILLIANT. 8-BIT BIG BAND NEVER DISAPPOINT. I SEE A NEW VIDEO, I CLICK ON IT WITH NO REGRETS, CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE AMAZING WORK.
The sprite work is out of this world. I am just baffled!
I know the sprite work is an added layer of complexity but just. Wow. It makes me so excited to see whatever y'all do next, because not only do I get a top-notch rendition of an amazing song but I get to see genuinely amazingly done and lovingly crafted sprite animations.
taking this track to the next level! shout out to the amazing drummer!
The pixel art is getting more and more impressive!
Zac is killing it! The entire sax soli is also so on point!
Holy cow, that lead trumpet work is spot on! He's killing it up there in the stratosphere. The entire band sounds fantastic as well, so great work to all who were involved!
The Dolphin Dance quote!
Let's goooo! This level's music will never get old, nor will this arrangement after hearing it so many times. (That drum solo is absolute fire, as well!)
Phenomenal! Dolphin Shoals is like the definitive MK8 jazz anthem, so it's awesome to see y'all cover it. Everyone hitting The Mario Kart Lick is such a flex. What a blessing it is to have so many talented musicians in one place.
Heyyy, wait a second. This isn't on Album 4...is this due to more licensing issues, or are y'all...planning something 👀
Really hope there's more Mario Kart covers to come! I feel like Mario Kart Wii's circuit theme is slept on, t'was a shame it never got love in the Booster Course Pass.
The sprite work is incredible, my favorite part is the integration of the track with the band; seeing Link drive across the keyboard made me smile :D Amazing piece!
you did bryan dirty on this one with that kick mic mix... thats not what a kick mic is supposed to sound like 😭
Ever since the amazing concert at Magfest, I’ve been waiting for this song to drop! And it was totally worth the wait! Fantastic song, and fantastic job!!
Okay... I cried while watching this. Absolutely phenomenal!
This has to be one of the best compositions 8bbb has ever given us, which is saying *quite a lot*
I'm the general stage manager and used this track today as the bows for my high school drama production, boomers in the audience had no clue. I like to hope I got some knowing nods out there. Thank you 8 bit big band, vibes are simply immaculate.
The animation on this going crazy with the angles is a top notch approval from me.
Literally clicked on this video just to hear y’all play the Mario Kart lick. I was not disappointed.
It may have taken 2+ year, BUT IT'S FINALLY OUT!
Everything about this is insane, but holy shit that sprite work.
Truly amazing that we've come full circle
HA so glad they included the mariokart lick
YOOOOOOO, turning the solo into a sax soli was amazing, and those sixteenth off beat hits by the brass were amazing, i’m glad the lick was as emphasized as it was lol
Listening to this while i wait for saxlogic to comment on this video
What a way to start the morning!!!
This video was incredible and that drummer is ON POINT holy cow. Loving angry Luigi too. Excellent, excellent, excellent
This honestly brings me incredible happiness. Damn, this is amazing
Wohh the bass…..
Oh my gosh. The music sounds incredible as always (beautiful arrangement of a great song), and that drum showcase is absolutely fabulous (the speed! the precision!). But the animation! The smile on my face! Details like Link driving on the piano during the glissando, and Bowser dropping off the track, and Chuck Quizmo(?!?)... so much love in this production :>
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY forever
The ANIMATION. GOOD LORD. this is all around incredible, y'all never miss 👏👏👏👏
One of the biggest flexes I've ever seen: giving the legendary solo line to the entire rest of the band, while making the drummer one of the featured soloists.
These sprites are insanely good.
Wow that is an incredilbe arangment and SovanJedi's pixel art is always amazing
Been waiting for this video for so long 🥲
I see you with the Mario Kart 64 nod at the intro, effects artist!
4:55 I love Bryan Davis, absolute legend
Ah, it's one of my favorite songs, done by one of my favorite bands. Thanks.
The drummer had a joy ride at the end
Bryan nailing another one. Good grief, phenomenal job as always!
FINALLY! I've been listening to this song isolated from the album release and the live performance for probably a year, now I get to listen to it on repeat.
FINALLY, BEEN WAITING SINCE MAGFEST FOR THIS
This is great! Reminds me of the videos where drummers contrast what people think is difficult with what's actually difficult.
How the hell do you make an entire orchestra groove like this? Amazing
THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! I would LOVE to see like a Caravan style of Snif-City from Paper Mario and the Origami King
AMAZING as always!
the sprite work is so phenominal and i absolutely love that you brought back bryan carter on drums!
YES, I've been waiting for this, and I love the animations for it!
Saw this live in Miami and I've been waiting for this upload ever since this arrangement is perfect
this is so dope! you guys never fail to amaze me with these awesome covers!!!
the drummer went to town!
Another absolute banger. I love it, might sneak it on next time we sit down for a game of Mario kart.
