    Been collecting budget knives for about 4 years and have over 100 of them with zero regrets. Yeah, I got a few duds over the years, but I still keep them as a reminder of my past bad judgement. Other than that, I love all my knives and rotate them as much as possible so most of them see at least some daily use. But I agree with you, if a new collector wants to use their money the most effectively, then they shouldn't go crazy buying up budget knives like I did.

  • @mewithknives3481
    @mewithknives3481 Před 15 dny +4

    Budget knives are the collector's foundation. Through budget knives a collector can decide if there is a designer, lock type, or even blade steel they like. Most knife guys are far more willing to thrash a budget knife before a premium knife. Budget knives allow you to attempt mods on before you try it on a premium knife. I have sen guys with budget knife collections and these are the golden days of budget knives.

      id argue modern budget knives are good enough that you could collect only budget knives and be totally fine w it. it’s all personal preference, some people like budget knives, some people don’t. i personally mainly stay with spydercos lol

    • @SixArmedPriest
      @SixArmedPriest Před 11 dny

      @@acid6urns There is a difference in collecting and buying to use imo. A person who just buys the knives to use and abuse, you are 100% correct. But for collectors, that'd be a waste of money.
      Personally I only buy to use and abuse. That is my collection. Buying some ridiculously overpriced ($1,000+) piece of art has absolutely zero interest to me. I do not purchase to just keep it in a safe or resell. Buy a well built USA Made knife and it will last you a lifetime +.
      To each their own but I've never understood the hype around just buying a knife to say you own it lol

    Totally agree with your definition of a warn cliff and a sheep's foot. Good advice on the strop, I use a steel. It does the same thing but doesn't remove material from the edge. Strop after the steel doesn't work anymore. Break-in is a must. My Manix 2 was so stiff, kept on operating it, and it's breaking in well. Good video, Doody, thanks.

    Suggestion for saving up for higher end knives: every time you're sorely tempted to drop $50-80 on the budget knife de jour, put the cash you would have spent on that soon-to-be-forgotten knife in a box. Before you know it, you'll have $300+ in cash to use on a better knife that will stand the test of time.

  • @tonysa2337
    @tonysa2337 Před 16 dny +2

    Great vid as usual! Just a slight difference of opinion. Agree with the basic sentiment that buying heaps of budget knives is not a good idea. But I believe that buying a few quality knives to start with is a great idea as they provide context that enable you to appreciate the more expensive knives you'll buy later on. The quality budget knives also give you experience and help you decide what you do and don't like in a knife and which types of knives best suite your needs (for those who are knive users rather than purely collectors)..Also, my small collection extends from $30 kives to $250 knives, including some US made Spyserco's which I love, but my favourite EDC by some margin remains a $100 Kizer Drop Bear with Micarta scales and 154cm blade. It is such a fantastic EDC knife for my needs that I bought 2 more Drop Bears in different steel/ handle material. 'Premium' or more expensive is not always better.

    Although I've had an interest in knives since being gifted one at age 12, I live in the UK where our archaic laws have hindered any real chance of collecting them.
    Hence, I've only just really started collecting in the last couple of years at age 60...and I have also recently come to the point where I've stopped buying crappy cheap folders and clones with a view to upping my game... hence, i bought a Bestech Junzi slipjoint and a CJRB Pyrite and the difference is huge, even at that level! No more clones or "gas station knives" for me!
    So, as a newbie, just about everything you've said in this video makes perfect sense ...
    That said, it'll still be a while, and a few more 'budget' knives, before I go up to the next level coz I'm poor.... 😅

    I dont know about saying Dont buy a bunch of budget knives... I think its a process that ppl may go through and then instead of getting like 5 budgets you can just get 1 premium knife.... but I think its not a waste... cuz theyll have gone through that and had a feel for all the different kinds....
    Some people are into the budget knives... thats theyre version of collecting... also its sorta anti for the knive industry to tell people to stay away from budgets... In saying that I bought 2 budgets and a few counterfeits before I jumped into the deep end... but thats not to say that budget knives dont have a place in my collecting... I just havent found one that i like more than what Ive got

    I really wish I would have watched this when I was first starting out. I have way to many budget knives that at this point I have given to my 16 year old daughter who enjoys them and likes having her own collection but like u said I'm looking at American made knives and in order to budget for one I have to go around 3-4 months without buying any other knives. Then I can afford to buy it. The biggest mistake I make is the need and desire to have a new item every week or sooner in some instances and that leads me to buy cheaper models just to have that it's new moment and or the thing people r talking about that week and then when a big nice knife rolls out I don't have the funds for it. I try to budget x amount of money towards this hobby every week and not go over my limit. Really nice video I always enjoy ur candid attitude towards CZcams and knives.

    Grade A advice! Obviously go with your budget and if collecting means having 10 knives and you refuse to pay over 100 bucks then so be it. But by and large most people will make the leap I did it on my 4th knife, spent 30 bucks on two knives, then 50, then I jumped right into the Demko AD20.5 for $325. I think I popped that cherry too soon but I am glad I did because I buy knives ranging from 30 to 450 and I use them all and I only sell things I don’t ever carry. Sometimes it’s the 200 dollar knife and sometimes it’s the 60 dollar knife it all depends. Sorry for the story book but it is excellent advice and definitely anyone reading this but a Doody Strop!!!

    Dear Doody, I have an Arthur Wright and sons Barlow. The knife is unused because I cannot get it to open and close. I tried to give it away to Thifty Kaniffy online but he asked me to send him a email message. I don’t know how to do that. I am an 58 year old man who does not know anything about these new cell phones. I cannot even give this knife away. Do you know of any knife guys who would trust me with their name and address so I can find a new home for this Barlow? If I can’t give the knife away I will just toss it in the trash. Yours sincerely James Luther from North Carolina 😊

      Well you’re going to have to figure out how to send a receive an email. Nobody is going to give you their address in a public comment section 🙂

    As others said, don’t begin, used to be fun, now knives are so mass produced that they are not collectable like they used to be. The collectable knives are so rediculous in price that it is not even worth it. Fix up your car, buy a golf cart, fix up your house,
