  • We've been testing the all-new tenth-generation Honda Civic five-door family hatchback.
It's 130mm longer, 30mm wider and 20mm lower with shorter overhangs, giving it a more aggressive and sporting stance.
The Civic gets a "sharp and aggressive ‘face’, pronounced wheel-arches and sculpted front and rear intakes hint at the Civic’s sporting character.”
It has been engineered from the ground up and the new Civic has a lightweight (16kg lighter than before) structure and more rigid body shell (a 55% improvement), while the car’s centre of gravity has been lowered by 10mm. Aerodynamically it’s also improved and includes complete underbody panelling - hang on a minute, they might be serious about this sports thing.
There’s a new suspension system with MacPherson struts at the front to provide high lateral rigidity for enhanced handling and an all-new multi-link suspension at the rear. Its engineers have set out to make the new Civic the best handling car in its class, with matching ride comfort.
Under the bonnet are two all-new VTEC turbo petrol engines, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo developing 127bhp and 148lb ft of torque as well as a 1.5-litre four-cylinder with 180bhp and 177lb ft of torque. Both are available with a newly-designed six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic.
Inside, there’s more room on offer as front shoulder room has increased by 10mm and there’s 30mm more space between the front seats while the seats have also been lowered to give the driver “a greater connection with the car.”
In the back, you get an extra 20mm of shoulder room and an impressive 95mm additional leg and 45mm knee room, while the boot has 478 litres of storage capacity.
The dashboard is all-new and redesigned, putting technology first. There’s a 7.0in digital screen between the instruments and Honda’s second-generation infotainment system will feature Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto.
Safety features are extensive and include autonomous collision avoidance braking, land departure warning, road departure mitigation, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.

This car wasn't particularly high on my short list, but having been to my local dealer, had a good look at the car, I was intrigued for a test drive. I have to say that after driving the 1.0 SR, I was very impressed. Yes, the Leon FR I drove earlier was undoubtedly much quicker, but I just hated the quality of the interior, the cheap plastics, door cards, and seats that felt hard and looked like they would show every speck of dirt. A good 40 min test drive later, and I've ordered the Civic, as the drive was excellent, refined 1 litre engine, great boot space, and a genuine feel of quality. The looks won't win everyone over, but I rather like its quirkiness. Can't wait for delivery. Great review btw.

Simon Mellor many thanks and a great post. The 1.0-litre is a gem and the Civic drives brilliantly. Good choice and hope it is what you expect when it arrives. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on with it.

the links lizard many thanks for the kind words.
Filming was in Castle Combe in Wiltshire for this one. Great place to visit if you get the chance.
Honda has done a great job in transforming the Civic into an entertaining family hatch with excellent petrol engines.
Think the looks will split opinion, though.

I live in Australia and just bought the 2017 RS Hatchback. Not sure what the British equiv is but it's the Sport Touring model 1.5L Turbo in the US.
I love this car. There are better cars out there but nowhere near in this price range and certainly not with the same fuel economy. This beauty does it all and does each thing far better than average. I also love the aesthetics. I realize this is subjective but the look is a good 50% of what made me want to buy it. I love it even more now that I own it too. I splurged on some of the cosmetics and it looks even slicker as a result.
As for this review, I agree with almost everything said but I'd like to point out that the RS model and the LX at the top have even better handling than the base models. They also get far better performance and the interior gets a notch up as well. The RS also has a 450W 11 speaker system with a subwoofer (love it). The review also stated that there was only 1 cup holder. That's wrong. Perhaps the car you were given for review lacked the console sliding inserts? If you have those sliding trays in, you get 3 cup holders that are very deep. It adds to a sense of security that you won't tip them over and they stay out of the way, allowing you to still use the armrest most of the time.
I cannot gush about this car enough. Best purchase I have made for myself in a long time. I only wish I were rich enough to afford a Type R ;)

They are hard to find here I wanted 6 speed but who knows when or where that’s available
I had to go 160 miles for this one
      So far I love it

there are 2 ! cup holders in the center console. they are stacked together. you can separate them and set them both side by side in the console storage bin

the links lizard hi there. Many thanks and great to hear from you. I’m just putting into action a mini relaunch (planning stage) for new reviews but with a slight twist.
Proposing to do week long reviews to cover real-world living - so commuting, shopping, weekend away etc with the added splash of other people jumping in the car from non-journalist backgrounds to give their “Everyman” thoughts. What do you think. Aim to keep it all about the car but as most people (buyers) might experience it

55% stiffer. Huge? Let's put it this way; a 55% stiffer jelly could hardly be described as being 'stiff'. Not that the previous one was like a jelly, but there has to be some reference point for such figures to have any real meaning.
Pity about the big black rackets at the front and back. What were they thinking?
Honda make exceptional quality cars and drivetrains, no doubt about it. This one, in hatchback form is also locally built in the UK, which is a big bonus in my book.

Good for short trips but a design flaw makes it painful for the knee. It touches the hard plastic 'L' part near the infotainment & gear lever. If they had it in soft plastic or soft material that's de amazing. Sad it doesn't have electronic seat adjustment. Otherwise a good car as fuel economy & handling not amazing due to the ergonomics. :-/

I don't believe there's actually V-Tec unless you get the 2 Liter no turbo engine in the US or somewhere else that offers it.

As always a very good review, unfortunately the looks plus those cheap looking interior plastics are a huge let down, the fake vents in the bumpers look, just fake! the once neat small civic hatchback is now bloated and too large for our lovely country roads..
