- A technical problem that global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike says it has identified in its software and is working to resolve is causing massive outages around the globe for businesses, airlines and people using Microsoft. CrowdStrike provides antivirus software to Microsoft for its Windows devices. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave has more on how airlines are responding to the outage and Jamil Jaffer, founder and executive director of the National Security Institute at George Mason University's Scalia Law School, joined CBS News to discuss how an incident like this happens.

The incompetence is staggering. I can't imagine anyone deploying an update like this affecting so many businesses, before testing it in a closed environment first

My main concern is the emergency systems such as 911 and hospitals.

BSOD is a Windows term that goes back decades. It just means that Windows itself crashed. That's what bothers me the most. Why is the operating system (Windows) crashing because of a bad Crowdstrike update? The OS should never crash. This points to a flaw in Windows, in addition to a bad CS update that should never have been deployed without initial testing in a closed environment.

The internet was around in the 1980s and before but computers were considered nerdy and geeky and if you were into them you were picked on.

I am just a simple PC user. But. This explanation doesn't make much sense.
First - a trial run should be done the triple check whether the update is functioning correctly.
Second, why is such update done at the same time around the globe? Doesn't make much sense to me. Which update is so urgent that not any possible error was calculated and considered?
Agreed but I think the reason it's affecting all at once is because it's a cloud based service, so everything is dependent on it in real time. Hopefully it's a wake-up call.
@@kenmore01 have no idea about that. Do you have an idea why out of 105 cloud available countries and 180 Microsoft available countries according to reports oy the US, Europe, Singapore and Hong-Kong are affected?
@@JustMonday-tu4rx I believe it's because they all subscribe to this service which interacts in real time, but online. When they released their "update" which has a bug, they all downloaded it around the same time.

This isn't the first time a bad update downed a lot of systems. It's just that usually when this sort of thing happens it's a little smaller scale and less noticeable to the public.
This isn't something you want happening under your watch. Alot money was lost today. Law suits will be filed.

Crowdstrike seems to have such an excellent QA team.

It came down to the fact we had a spectacular _single-point_ failure that took down much of the Internet. This is going take at least a day to resolve as Crowdstrike pushes out a corrected update to their anti-malware systems.
This is caused by over reliance on one operating system. These companies need to switch to linux distros.
the bigger problem is the bad crowd strike update prevents machines from getting a new corrected update without direct intervention by a technician on each machine. it's going to take a lot of labor hours to hand hold every single device affected.

yeah, the fact that the error happens on a blue-colored screen doesn't mean it's *the BSOD, in the classic sense. But everyone has used that term for any blue error for decades so it's a tough battle to pick at this point lol, waste of energy. But it secretly drives me nuts tho
The caption for this video makes it seem like this is somehow a fault with Microsoft. It's not - it's 100% the fault of CrowdStrike and its issuing this update without (apparently) properly testing it.

I seriously doubt this issue was simply a mistake in the update code. They are likely hiding something far more ominous.

this is what happens when organizations don't do proper controlled patching. I'm sure this shed some light at each organization, including Microsoft, because their Azure/
M365 apps were affected.

If only it wasn't a completely separate entity that released an update that crashed windows computers. And the only windows computers that crashed are if you pay for the service that crowd strike provides, and apply the latest update, your computer will crash.

Microsoft already has their own antivirus that doesn't crash their computers called Windows defender. Crowd strike is a third party antivirus that you have to pay a separate entity to use. This is not a Microsoft problem This is a crowd strike bringing their customers down problem

It’s not Microsoft, Crowdsource software installed on Windows did an update that messed up.
Exactly why I still have a landline phone and keep cash on me. Also food, water and necessary items for a month. You learn as you go. After a couple of emergencies and going without power made me start doing things a little different.
This is what happens when the public is dumb enough to still enable microsoft with buying leases for windows os computers.

As a systems analyst we always did a notified release, first to 1 or 2 of each unique tyoe of site, then major rollout with notification!!!!! How the eff is this going on?!?!?!? And its always been know that windows is so huge and prone to bugs!!!

@@jacobchitwood4365 If a company is doing their due diligence? No, this doesn't just happen. But CrowdStrike didn't do their due diligence. They didn't properly test. They didn't roll out the update in waves. They didn't allow IT for companies to test before installing onto workspaces or machines. This is CrowdStrike not doing what they were supposed to do. It's not a cyberattack, this isn't a security concern; this is just a buggy patch. It's just such a buggy patch that there will probably be laws made about this, on top of the probably trillions that will be sued for.

This isn’t a cybersecurity incident. Someone (or a team) at CrowdStrike really, really messed up. Incompetence, and not guided action, led to where we are.

Great News Update !!!! Perhaps in addition to Cyber Security You should also engage Risk Managers for the discussion. it is technically impossible to avoid 100% any technical failure. What happened today was just the manifestation of the worst case in a regular risk analysis

As layman with no technical background, one would presume with any new "update" one would use it in a phased and with some test live systems before it is massly distributed. Would this not be possible with whatever this update was? Major systems seem to have been affected, critical systems like 911, medical databases, people's online bank account, airline ticketing system, people's home systems, etc,. This is very dangerous as who knows what else might be affected and further ramifications. There are already too many data breaches causing many Americans major financial issues/losses. Do Americans now need to be worried about IT companies causing issues with regular system updates?
What this station "knows" is what it has been told to say. Nothing changes.
