Sabonabitches! I saw "Johnny Dangerously" once...Once.
Yup, when you got to the tuner bushings, I started thinking, If it ain’t broke, don’t break it.✌️
This is going to turn out great. I am looking forward to the price difference. DIY custom shop 🎸
Wow, what timing! Just bought this and the blk/blk version just so I could swap the pick guards-the aesthetics phase of yet another, 'I have to have this' moment. Pretty crazy you had the exact same ferrules fall out (all five on the black one) and the same little goober on same spot of finger board. Looks like plenty of business work ahead before anything else starts falling off! 🎸🎸🛠
I have done the Same surgery on a few Squier starts.
Kind of a similar topic; I bought a "Groove" bass from Quebec for $287. I put a set of Labella flats, and EMG Geezers in it, and it plays like a dream! I've got about $500 into it and I've already made half of that back from gigging with it. There's never been a better time for well made, cheap shit.
I built a custom telecaster years ago that I used all Fender american parts to what I wanted but Fender didn't make unless you custom shop ordered it for ridiculous money. Used a USA Fender bridge with 3 brass compensated saddles, Fender Mod Shop SCN pickups with the custom shop grease bucket wiring harness and never liked or connected with the guitar. 2 years later and thoughts of selling it ( I dont sell guitars, I just buy more) forced close scrutiny of my build, I replaced the bridge with the Babicz full contact 6 saddle model. After I properly setup the new bridge the guitar finally came to life. I fell in love with the guitar for the first time and still adore playing it to this day. Unless you're dealing with a vintage or special edition guitar feel free to customize and make your guitar work for you. I'm the original owner of a 1975 strat that was the first guitar I ever customized and never regretted doing so since I still love it. It's amazing what changing even 1 part on a guitar can do for your connection to the bliss a guitar can provide. No sense having a guitar as a wall ornament or an investment unless you aren't a real player. A happy guitar is a played guitar!!
I get what you’re saying about wall ornaments. But I’m a crap guitar player. I love playing but I’m just not a great guitar player. I own some guitars that are better than what I need. But I have them because they are wall art. I appreciate them for their beauty. Sure I enjoy playing them. But I also love the way they look. Instead of covering my walls with art, I cover them with guitars. And I’m sure there are people out there who can’t play a single chord who stick guitars on their walls, and I’m okay with that. I’m glad some people find beauty in objects outside of canvas with paint on it.
@@chrissturley823 I hear ya as I have a studio in each of my 2 homes and enjoy displaying my guitars as well. Great feeling of accomplishment to work and acquire instruments we can be proud of enough to show off even if only to ourselves. Play on and often!!
I bought a “new in box” 2012 MIM Tele from a closing local music store for $350 cash, in 2021 during the stupid lockdowns. I did not replace EVERYTHING, but I didn’t like the Ceramic pickups, so I got Fender Tex-Mex set on sale online. While I was at it I replaced the electronics; with CTS pots, Orange cap, a Fender 3 way switch and pull-back wiring, A Cobalt Blue pick guard, on the Olympic white body. I’m into this beauty fit less than $550, she sounds great; capable of a sweet clean tone, and she can growl when asked to.
I Also have a 2012' MiM Telecaster. Great guitar.... Now that I replaced the pickups, saddles, nut, tuners and electronics.... Telecasters were Made for modding... It's the Model A Ford of guitars...
Dave can do it all day long!!! That's why he's the best 👁️✌️😁
It's funny, I've never had a PCB switch go bad, but have had a CTS fail. Life's weird.
I haven't had any switch fail in 35 years of electric guitar playing, but I have started to put the American switches in because they simply look a lot more trustworthy and are easier to solder. Same for the pots - the bigger pots have more contact surface and sturdier wipers. The problem is that the actual routing is too small on some Asian guitars.
I knock down the glossy poly with either 600-800 grit wet sandpaper or similar micro mesh pads and I don't tape off anything, I make a natural gradient at the headstock and heel. I don't like what the CS does, a clean line and then no finish. If you want to use tape, do what Dave does, go all the way.
It's funny ho some people on forums are put off by the finish and end up not buying guitars because of it. It takes 5 minutes to sand it down to a nice satin.
I’ve done the same thing myself on a few occasions……you never get your money out of it, but you can get a decent guitar out of it. Rock on Dave!
Keep the original parts and when you resell you put them back in the guitar and move expensive parts to the next guitar. Then you 'get your money out' ... and the stock guitar sells faster than a modded one anyway.
@@jvin248 Great point! I don't like buying modded guitars myself. And it can keep you busy!
@@jvin248 Dave's ground-wire winding and soldering tip would definitely reduce the hassle when swapping the electronics.
Hi Dave, thank you for this video and for your contagious humor ! I also, did improve my Squire Strat a lot : I bought a USA one ! Heuu.... I'm jocking !!!
Everyone i know that have purchased the new tele squire 50s, including myself, is that it's better than a regular Fender. I've been playing for 40 years, and i love my squire just as it is. It's my gigging guitar.
leaning forwared into that electric screwdiver made me pretty anxious dude :P
Great stuff, Dave.
I see people claiming that Squier is just as good if not better than Fender.
Then I watch videos like this...
🤣😂🤣😂
I've had two squires and they were shit.
Ive got a korean made squier strat from 1993. It cost me £75 out of a pawnbrokers and the neck is beautiful with good frets and rosewood fingerboard. Apart from japanese made squiers they are well made.
My squier classic vibe Telecaster is on par if not better than my fender player series with a few cheap upgrades. It’s all subjective really
@rickallen6378 The low end Squires aren't great. The high end ones are better than Mexican Fender now.
Random note on Asian made products (lesson I learned from motorcycles) they use JIS screwdrivers, NOT Phillips as commonly used in the USA and others.. SLIGHTLY different angles on the taper, just enough to cause the tip to ride up and slip/ strip out head ;)
I'm aware and have all drivers..these thing were just butter , glued in over size pilot holes
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff I knew YOU knew, Dave, that was for the benefit of others ;)
I own a bunch of fenders from high end USA to imports. I love my mexiteles and mexistrats most
That shielding is LIT!
I have a Squire Jazz Bass that I did the same thing to. I used Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pound pickups, new pots, wires, Hipshot bridge, tuners/detuner and a brass nut. I love it... I don't like that it weighs a ton lol. I use my Geddy Jazz Bass live, but the Squire to record with. I think the heft gives it a unique tone. I know I'll never get rid of it!
In a new guitar world of fake flame maple necks, roasting everything and printed finishes and micro thin vineers (even reaching the custom shop) it's refreshing to see what looks like a proper guitar again. Then the headstock read Squier, who knew 😅 You can always replace the pups and pegs later and still have a winner tele for 1/3 the price 👍
If you have a screw glued in: get your hottest soldering stick and heat the screw (use fresh solder on the tip to help with heat transfer). Heat then screw for a full minute, and then quickly grip it with a locking plier and rotate it out. The heat releases every glue--even CA/GlooBoost.
Didn't know till I tried taking them out WISE GUY wtf?
Dave, two mods I like to see on Teles: 4way switch to put both single coils in series humbucking mode (Baja mod) and rotate the control plate for V-T-Switch to the rear (Kirchen mod). Hopefully those are in the plans for the next episode?
Have you seen the Tele switch that doubles the number of options but looks stock. The same company produces a 10 way switch for Stats, push the switch side ways it produces other wiring options, straight up positions are stock.
Very good Dave!
Really interesting video ! Thank you for sharing !
Thank you too
Yeah Dave I won't Pop ferrules on Painted headstocks way way too many Chips and cracks backing them out tried heat and everything, typically for an upgrade they are a bit expensive but the Kluson Revolution Locking Tuners match the size perfectly so I just pop them on and you cannot tell.
to each their own. & Keeping you in business.
If I disliked a guitar that much to replace everything, I'd just resell it as is. It's worth more as a original Squier than it is modded. To remove the split coil humbucker to go with a single coil in the neck is a waste of a push-pull pot. This guitar was intended to be what it was & as long as it played as it was intended out of the box, there's just no reason to mod it.
@jimcamp2423:
I would definitely agree with that!
but it did not :(..only the color mattered
Wild. I just played k e of these at my friend’s shop today. Pretty good feeling guitar.
Per the serial #, it's a limited edition classic vibe 60's telecaster made in April 2024 - killer color scheme and I love the rosewood neck. Don't tell anyone but I also gut my Squires and upgrade with all USA parts and those guitars rock!!!!
I just got done putting a set of Kluson Deluxe tuners in my CV50. Those did NOT fit in the old grommets, so I popped them out with a hammer and a screwdriver. Just a tao-tap-tappy. Then I used a vice grips with tape on the ends to squeeze the new ones in. What brand tuners did you put in?
Great video.
The thick finish might be the only thing making that neck behave. 😬😁
Those screws are made from recycled donuts and old underwear.
I've been in the factory and I've seen it.
Also: as they say, "if it ain't broken, you're not trying hard enough."
Nice work as always!
if you want a fender squire thats good to go outa the box the 50s classic vibe strat is fantastic for 425 bucks right mouta of the box. fender pickups and pots ready to go. i bought one last summer. they are fantastic
Those pickups and pots in the classic vibe are made in China
@@JohnAdams-xc5yk The pickups might be Toneriders, made in China, as they were years ago.
Good video
Theres a company called rock rabbit that sells an updated control plate for teles that i really like. It moves the front knob towards the middle a little and give more space between the switch and volume knob.
I think that is Rock Rabbit - if you search white rabbit guitar parts you can learn how to play the Jefferson Airplane song
@@brianmccowan1949 sorry. Youre absolutely right. Ive misstated this website address several times. Thank you.
String ferrules came out of my squier cv thinline also. I asked fender and they said they were supposed to. Not mounted only held in by the strings. I decided not to argue with them. One day I’ll find better ones to hammer in. FYI. My cv baritone Tele didn’t have the same problem.
just put a little dab of "pritt stick" type glue on them next time you change strings.
If you’re gonna put that much money into basically a husk, why not just save your money and by a Mexican or an American tele???
I got the money to buy anything I want. I'm 70 and retired. I just enjoy building guitars and making silk purses out of sow's ears.
Every Mexican fender I ever bought I had to replace everything.
@@dennisweis9959 But a decent foundation to start building from. Fender custom shop parts and vintage parts are interchangeable. Those Chinese and Indonesian bodies and necks don't match with anything by Fender.
MiM Fender isn't much better, and sometimes worse than the top Indonesian Squires, and the main thing separating both from an American Fender (not Custom Shop) is hardware, and why let Fender choose your hardware when you can customise? This is why many people buy Squires. Indonesian Squires are well made guitars with cheap parts. Perfect starting point for a build.
@@Patrick-857 I personally like Jap and Allparts necks better than any Fender neck but whether I'll have to re-route the neck pockets is a crap shoot with any body. I like the neck to sit lower in the body than Fender does so the bridge doesn't have to be so high. Been building partscasters for over 20 years now.
You re the guy for this work Dave, I hope Fender doesn't get too upset about you putting $400 worth of parts on a $300 imported guitar to bring it up to the same standard as the ones they sell for $1000+.
Those clips on that meter are great or some types of jobs but you really need a separate meter fitted with spiky probes for those jobs where you re bending your little cordoozle ! Those meters are cheap enough and it's always nice to have the right tool for the job, the only thing I will add is the leads are probably more expensive than the meter but I have a feeling you may have a spare set anyway.
Seems like better to pay more for custom shop. But AWESOME work on all that shielding! Thanks for sharing this out.
1/3 or less the cost and mod it anytime no worrries
I regard Telecasters as the ultimate "take it to bits and change things" guitars. My favourite is a 1989 US Standard and the only things that're still "standard" are the tuners and they work well so I can't be bothered to replace them. It's been 4 different colours, it's had 1,2 or 3 pickups at different times and 5 different scratch-plates ..... I'm done for the moment, but who knows.
Buy a Squier, I'll tax your parts
Eat poutine, I'll tax your farts

You get what you buy for.
DAVE. Hope you're well mate
Want a high quality squier?
Track down a Pro Tone, Tele or Strat. Several models. Only made for maybe 2 years ('96-'97?) overseas. Rivaled the US priduct, so it's said. Hence, the production shutdown. Don't know if it's true, just that they are super squiers.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, that owner will be spending more $ on the guitar than what it cost new. 😂
less than an overpriced USA custom shop and just as good..GFO
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff I don't think that the wood and parts going into that squire rise to the level of a USA custom shop. Maybe a made in Mexico with you can pick up 700.00 or less. But if that's what he wants...
@@rickallen6378lol, no. MIM instruments are quite good, but don’t compare at all with aftermarket electronics and hardware. I agree that it might not be quite at CS level, but it will definitely hold its own against a Pro2 at, what, a quarter of the price now all-in?
Some of these low end instruments are fundamentally sound and can benefit from better components. I have a $400 Harley Benton bass (MP-4EB) that is built like a tank but really needed better electronics, so it got $200 of EMG pickups. It’s worth it.
@@stereoroid Yeah, I upgraded the pickups on my Godin with DiMarzio's, replaced the shitty bent metal bridge with a Babicz Full Contact bridge, replaced the cheap pots with CTS pots and even put in a Sprague cap, transformed the instrument and brought out a rich sound !
Good components on an affordable instrument can make a huge difference to how it sounds !
Perhaps better off buying used Japanese tele and upgrade the pickups. That has been my success.
thank you Mr Perhaps
Interesting video
No offense , Bro , but would it not be easier & cheaper to sell the thing & buy the guitar you want - all completed as you would want it ? And then have a ball playing it ?
Interesting decision by the owner. To each their own, but when I owned a Squier the neck forever needed to be adjusted and I was glad to see the back of it. Might have just been unlucky.
Vintage split=post tuners! Always the way to go in my book!
Nice!
Time once agin to play operation with doctor David.
The only difference is when the operation instrument (volt meter) touches metal. In Dave's World of Fun Stuff, your operation is successful when you get metal-to-metal constantnudity.

Why would you buy a Squire and replace all of the parts?? That’s fucked up.
Great video. How did you get the poly off the neck and is there a video where you demonstrate it?
320 grit wet paper
If this was my Squier, I'd change the pick-ups, the jack output for an electro socket, the pickups and some straplocks. The tuners are more than good enough. Changing the pots is only needed if you change the pick-ups and need to go to a different value. And maybe matting up the clearcoat on the back of the neck. Same result for a lot less. And as for changing the HB for a a single coil, that is the single most redeeming part of that guitar.
Nice work! I want to get the black model just because of the humbucker. I too would sand the neck, copper tape the cavities and update the tremelo. Were the switches and pots really that bad and needed to change or just a request?
for I few $$ more why not just do it
Hey Dave. Did you put that neck humbucker on the meter?
Can you share the values?
I've tried contacting Fender by they couldn't give me any information on this pickup other than it's a 3rd party OEM 🤷♂
same as a humbucker
..."except for that plate"? The most importantest part is reversing the control plate on yer tele! OK, that's a personal thing, but it got you a comment. Good content Dave!
So glad somebody decided to make the one billionth video of upgrading a Squier. That’s exactly what CZcams needed. Although I don’t know why I’m talking trash. I’m the idiot who watched all the way thru both parts. Kinda wish dude woulda added on 45 seconds more to his video to give us a quick demo or a couple afterthoughts.

Hi. Which part of China/Philippines/Indonesia were the USA replacement parts made in? I'm all for swapping gear out and doing fun stuff on a guitar, but I generally only change stuff that either is no longer fit for purpose or because I found something that I think suits my sound more. Couldn't give a monkey's really about where it comes from. Squire tele's from Indo are generally a pretty good, playable guitar, otherwise it wouldn't say Squire on top and a load of Fender affiliation underneath, especially when you consider what you get for the price. I usually spend more time on the fret ends and flatting the gloss than worrying about some of the parts. Nice looking guitar you have there.
Blah Blah..I'm just the toilet repair man..blash blah same pay new toilet GFO
Love your work
Shielding paint is much easier than copper foil. Also, shielding tape also is easier to cut. Great video ! Thanks !
garbage ..a mess and loses its conductive abilty over time
Problem I have had with putting in better switch and pots is that some import guitars don't have big enough routings. They route them for the small pots and the small PCB switch.
fix it
I bought a made in Mexico Telecaster and the first thing I did was tear it apart and replaced all the cheap parts and replaced them with all all genuine American Fender parts
From start to finish with all the parts' about how long does it take to do a job like this if you don't take any breaks?
5 to six hours..with breaks..you have to take break
@RhettShull recently did something similar. His guy just scuffed up the poly on the neck with 0000 steel wool, a change that can be reversed by polishing.
never use steel wool ..big mess with metal fibers
Just use powder coating tape. Same thing
connect that grounding wire to the shielding, as soon as that happens you'll have your constantnudity again.. you made the right call though by taking a brake. 🙂
Spell check strikes again, although I have nothing against “constantnudiy’ in an all girls band. It happens to me finger typing words on an iPad that word spellings and grammar errors (not constant nudity).
Squier PUs sound fine to me... Tuners, not great but adequate
New nut is the best upgrade
Would've been nice to know the measurements of old and new pickups, also the "FEnder " parts you replaced. I'm in Australia and the cost of USPS is getting prohibitive to building/modifying guitars. Do you have a similar problem in Canada. I can't make 1/2 decent Tele for less than $850 AUD, so I only make for friends who trust my work ( with a LOT of consultation before a build). Would you pease name parts going in a mod such ac this? I wonder why Sqire exists. Different measurements in bodies is on example. Parts, another.
Looking at the body now you have copper lined the cavities, it would look amazing with a copper metallic scratch plate!
Brass..copper too wiggly
Hi Dave, love this video...Questions- (1) What did you use to remove the finish on the back of the neck, and (B) what kind of tuners did you use? Sincerely, your pal in The Sin City Boys
320 grit wet dry paper used wet, the tuners were vintage Fender brand, tuners (aged) came from Solo guitars
This video is almost as fun as a Chibson!

If you want to find out what something costs after the carbon tax all you have to do is look at the price charges at the store. And those prices on Fender parts didn’t change so yes you can tell what all those parts cost.
Chill pill, anyone? Anyone? It's the owners money and business. Calm down. Be nice.

I wonder if the gooched screw is from an owner over tightening and stripping the wood rather than manufacture - come across this on many 'real' instruments in my time!

Companies must love it. They get to jack their prices and we blame the whole increase on the carbon tax.
A very interesting video, subscribed…Considering the amount of carbon produce by Canadian Oil Production, I would bet that the Petroleum industry isn’t paying a tax…knowing how Governments are influenced…and shifting the burden to the Canadian taxpayers as token gesture to climate change. There’s more people in Los Angeles, California than all of Canada. More Methane released from a oil field in Carbon than all the cars trucks gas or Diesel in Cacanda.
That being said, what Fender does want you to do is replace with Fender Parts, rather than a correctly manufactured as in the Pre 1970s bridge (Glendale, Callaham, vintage spec brideges and materials composition. Same can be said about Pickups, Klein, SD (Stephens Designs nothing against Seymour Duncan he makes great PUPS, except his Broadcaster Tele Bride uses 42 instead of 43 gauge), Novak, Harmonic Design…too many to list if price is no barrier. And quite frankly, hand made-guided Pups on EBay US or even Guitar Fetish are better in quality, quality, and most of all price than the majority Fender’s offerings made in the US, except Custom Shop and these are second to Klein in quality, correct Alnico composition, wire coating. You don’t listen to wood…or tuners, it’s the pickups, strings etc. the amp, and the speaker(s) which make the difference sonically.
Do, you, a relative, or a very close friend lives near the international border? If so rent a PO Box in the USA, and have them cross the border-retrieve your purchases, and then mail them to you In Canada. Honestly, that Carbon tax is not only excessive, it’s a ripoff, and anti-fair trade agreement.
Your neighbor to the South.
