Flying my Airplane to Music Mecca: The Sweetwater Showroom - ALL the Synthesizers!

- Sweetwater is the largest online music retailer, and has the largest physical showroom in North America. Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, it's a 2 1/2 hour drive for me, but I can do it in less than an hour in my Cozy MKIV airplane! In this video, I fly out to Sweetwater, tour through the showroom and facility, and demo every synthesizer I can get my hands on. A couple of the synths I tried gave me severe G.A.S.....which ones do you think they are?

I was meditating at my age (40 some) how many people around me do like synths or what is the percent on earth tha like synths. Mmmm? Maybe 1% and i belong to that 1 % that enjoys this kind of stuff .well is like for a kid to enter a candystore and soend the whole day there.well its my case and I really enjoy this kind of videos. Thank you for this video
This makes us the good kind of 1 percenters! If we had the money of the 1 percenters that would be dangerous!
Being able to fly a plane is kind of like a superpower. Truly magical
Not a superpower. Just takes a lot of time, effort and training (and money).
This video is brilliant! I have never come across a synthesiser enthusiast on YT, who actually flies an aeroplane. Thanks for taking us on this Sweetwater video expedition. It was wonders to watch!
Check out this one then: czcams.com/video/hor1Zsxglxc/video.html

Fascinating, I have been watching aviation related videos recently and now I learn that you are not only a synth enthusiast but also aviation. Cool. Nice plane!
That was my favorite tour of sweat water ever senor SCOTT
Next time you fly , scoope up in Austin Texas and we'll go to NOLA for Mardi gras ? Only the secret fiestas 👑🎧🎼🤫
Plane's and synths, you kept the aviation under your hat .respect.❤
This is probably the coolest video I've seen all year. Synths and airplanes! Amazing!
Loved this! I live in Ohio, too, and have made that drive to Sweetwater many times. Looks fun to fly.
As someone who has been watching another aviation channel recently, this was really fun to see aviation & synths in one video. Regarding the Osmose: If I could justify one, I could see myself often turning the pitch bend off. I think for me the real strength would be being able to control the “amp envelope” of each note individually. Like having a breath controller for each finger.
"and really...I still don't like out" did a gut laugh/snort :) Good video and Fly Safe and Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Wow, didn’t know I would be in the same boat as you, and for such a long time. Over 30 years in aviation and over 40 years into keyboards and synths. Fascinating!!
I live in fort Wayne and spend far too much time here. Truly an exceptional experience each time. Shout out to my SE Brian Massey!
YES!! Shoutout for the Oberheim!! I agree. It is hard to leave alone!
Did not know you were an aviator as well. Synth's and Skies, sounds like a new channel. Fellow aviator as well. Cool stuff!
god i miss sweetwater so much, i used to live in NW ohio so it was just an hour's drive and i went as often as i could. now i live a bit too far away and have to buy online. great video!
When she likes planes and he likes synths, the perfect CZcams video appears :D
Great video, often wondered what the Sweetwater showroom was like. Interesting aircraft you have there. Saw the canard wing and had to find out more... it's a flying rabbit hole!
Enjoyed your aircraft. Thanks for the ride along to Sweetwater. By the way lost my 12 year Sweetwater engineer 5 years ago because he went to upper management. Im happy for him, never bought from new rep. I have 13 hardware synths Newest is a Jupiter X most expensive is a Origin oldest is a Ensoniq TS10. I also have a guitar habit and a tube amp addiction. Synths are my main thing. Only tempting synth as of now is Montage m 8 to replace My Montage 8 and maybe the Waldorf flagship. Have a lovely Holiday.
I have a feeling we might have had the same rep. Chris I?
No his name was Paul A like the Microsoft cofounder have a lovely Christmas and a Synthy new year@@ScottsSynthStuff
Thanks for the tour. Great opportunity to play instruments side by side for comparison. Good comments about the keybeds.
Love the airplane
Love the Keyboards
Love the Show
Greetings from Germany
Very Kool ...!!! I would love to get to sweetwater one day...Thank you for the Tour..!!
Sweetwater was our family vacation last summer. I have a very understanding wife!!
Amazing, I could literally stay all day in this Sweetwater complex. Wish we had this stuff here. The osmose and M8x are both very impressive synths. I am considering getting a Montage M, if my classic gets sold. I have the MODX6+ as well and the keybed is quite fine for me, it's not Montage but still very good. And I also got the GAIA2 for Christmas and like it a lot, including the keybed. I could never get comfortable on the small Korgs I had before (Wavestate and Opsix).
I feel the same wzy about the Korgs but they are fun to program. I'd like to convert them to modules. There is a kit for that but it is $$$. I may try to build my own version of that kit. Maybe something out of wood!
@@jamesdefrancesco7765 Yeah I liked the interface too, but in the end I just kept the VSTs and sold the keyboards.
Ha! My brother-in-law bought the same plane just this week!
7:35 , hey ! you own a plane 😂
Yes, I do. :) That does not mean I'm wealthy. Actually, as any airplane owner will tell you, it means quite the opposite. :)
@@ScottsSynthStuff just kidding, who's wealthy this days...
Great video. Two things I’ll probably never do. Pilot my own plane and see Sweetwater in person. Merry Christmas! 🎄
Unfortunately, I'm already too old to train myself in both areas (flying and synthesizers). But at least I can still watch your videos about it😁. By the way, the CZcams channel Backcountry Pilots has also made some great videos on the subject of flying. And especially, for example, the video: Deja Vu Alaska. If you haven't seen it yet, I think it's worth seeing and listening to, even though it's already 5 years old.
You're never too old to learn!!
I was just there in June all the way from New England! Lucky. Merry Christmas.
Now, if I can only find a way to visit Sweetwater in MFS2020, life will be good.
What a cool way to go music shopping. The ultimate way🙌🙌🙌
The Trigon is trouble for me…. 😊 it is so interesting sounding
You were playing the E-Osmose, but it was the keyboard below it that is what I want! That Korg PA5X tugs at my heart strings.
Since I primarily play 'The Great American Songbook', synths don't really hold any appeal to me. Of course, when you think about it, the most widely used synth by type is the Hammond Organ, and I would like one of those, but not what you're channel is about, I don't think.
When you taxi in the Cozy, obviously the front wheel must be down. Does it retract for parking, and if so, how, and furthermore, why? I can see it retracting in flight, but I guess I don't understand it on the ground. Cockpit entrance and exit?
Honestly I don't know a huge amount about arrangers, so I didn't put any of them in my video.
The Cozy (and Long EZ) retract their front wheel when parking in order to prevent the airplane from tipping over backwards onto its propeller. It is sensitive to weight, and without people the airplane, a light gust of wind can pick the nose up and tip it over. Parking it with the nose on the ground moves the center of gravity forward, so this can't happen.
@@ScottsSynthStuff thank you, Scott. I wasn't sure about the why for the nose, but that actually makes a lot of sense with the CG that sensitive.
As to Arrangers, they tend to be marketed towards a specific type of player. For me, I'm not a great player, I had about a year worth of piano lessons when I was 8 or 9 years old and I never learned anything, really. So, an Arranger allows you to play a melody and a Chord, with the chord in the left hand. From a single chord, the Arranger uses one of several styles (600 in the PA5X, 800 in the new Yamaha Genos 2) and generates an 8 part backing track. That track consists of drums, percussion, bass and five other parts, which depend on the style. You might have piano, guitar and strings, or a full brass jazz orchestra playing in the background.
The old organs of the 70s and 80s, with the one finger chords where the genesis of this type of system, but over 50 years or so, they've gotten a lot better. With the last few generations, they've been good enough that a person could play a small lounge, restaurant, or something like that, or even do a duo with a singer or singer/guitarist.
There is a German, Alois Muller, who plays a variety of Arranger Keyboards, and he is probably the best demonstration of the what you can get from them.
www.youtube.com/@AloisMueller
The PA5X gives you a 16-track sequencer. Actually, it gives you TWO 16-track sequencers which can be played together, or fade one to another. It gives you the capability to create sounds, or at least to alter the internal sounds, but since all the internal sounds are Sample/Playback, you are limited. On the other hand, the new Genos 2 actually has a real FM synth built in and basically gives you the capability of a DX-7 along with all the sample playback.
Arrangers aren't for everyone, especially if you're making electronic music. But, as I said in my first post, I play The Great American Songbook which doesn't really use any 'synthesizers' for it's type of music. So, it fits my limited ability to play (I can't read bass clef at all, but I know how to create a chord) and the style of music I mostly play. Check out Alois's YT page, and you'll get an idea of what an Arranger can do.
Really cool video. Didn’t know you’re an aviator
You left out the NORD wall. lol. I love SweetWater.
Veery cool video, thanks for sharing!
Awesome video!
Cool video, fun to see the inside of Sweetwater. I like your plane too! 😎👍 I own an Osmose and think it's great!
I would love to visit this store.
Nice trip! 🌟
That's so cool, bro. You're not even that far from me. I'm over in Utica, NY one of these days I will get a chance to go and see that place for myself. I just don't have a car and I don't drive.
I wish they would eventually do the same here at their new location in Glendale, AZ
Cool air trip!
Amazing video, mate! Thanks
Wow, fun watching you fly there! I used to live just 30 miles away from Sweetwater, now 2000 miles. I have to buy to try :)
Thanks for sharing Scott. My respect for you and your knowledge continue to grow. U da man!
How cool is this.
The Long-EZ is the coolest plane ever! I mean unless you can find a Raytheon Starship.
I grew up near the USAF museum in Dayton. My first software developer job was working on military avionics. You know the MIDI bus and the MIL-STD-1553 bus are similar, except 1553 was standardized in 1973, and it’s 1.0 Mbit, 32 channels and has redundancy and uses twinax cable. MIDI is 31.25 Kbit and was standardized in 1983. It’s funny that MIDI is 32X slower and 10 years newer, but you have a lot more budget when you’re selling F-16s than when you’re selling Jupiter-6s. They both have incredible longevity. Although MIDI is really just Roland DCB 2.0. Roland should get most of the credit. Sorry I go a little crazy when I get a chance to nerd out about aircraft AND synthesizers…
Did you try the Sequential Take 5? Beautiful sounding and capable synth. Also love the Summit.
I really wanted to...but they didn't have one on display.
I think you're past the "I don't think I can afford" phase, you're an Aviator with your own Airplane.
I can afford an airplane because I make good decisions on other things that I can or cannot afford. Plus...I work very hard.
@@ScottsSynthStuff Haha, all good - it wasn't a critique, I'm sure you deserve everything you worked hard for Scott! Nothing in life comes for free, we all gotta work for it. Happy new year btw. Love your shows!
Medina huh?! My wife is from Lorain, although we live in Cincy.
Cool plane!! 😎 Just under 24 hrs flight time to Sweetwater from where I live (Adelaide, Australia) … lol
Did you get a change to try those nord keyboards in the corner by any chance? If so what do you think about them?
lol i was when you said flying it was rethorical lol wtf .... now that's something ......kudos !!
I 'm also finding the montage keyboard to be one , if not the best keyboard around (with the Nord actually) and you can set the aftertouch sensibility if i recall well (don't own one but went to shop to test)
Loved that video ...... you should sell some synth and get you the OB6 and Blue monster (i call it like that)
How cool is that, flying a plane into Ft Wayne!!
I was at Sweetwater a year ago, but I never found the "food court". I feel so stupid. Where is it, exactly? Is it a different entrance from the main area?
It's literally right next to the showroom!
@@ScottsSynthStuff Oy…. I visited all the showrooms, got pictures of the van at the entrance, but I never did see that food court.
Guess I’ll have to go back again. But I need extra $$$ to go to that place. I have very low impulse control when it comes to gear, LOL!
I've set aside $100000 for my ultimate Eurorack system. Good info.
Hey Scott. Cool video. Question about the 3rd wave. I’ve been lusting over one since before it was released. I was thinking about selling my Nord a1 and summit to cover (some) of the cost of a 3rd wave. I was hoping to see a few on the used market, but that hasn’t really happened yet. Anyways, do you think that a 3rd wave could cover what the a1 and summit does? Seems like it could. I’m starting to think fewer, more capable synths might be better for my workflow than owning many good synths. Curious of your thoughts.
Search CZcams for the "Waldorf Quantum MKII vs Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave" although this isn't the Iridium.
As to the Poly AT, isn’t the sensitivity user programmable in these synths?
I didn’t know you are a pilot. It’s like finding out that Mike Patey owns 10 synths (“Back to Korg!”) 🙂 Made your channel even cooler as I follow some aviation related channels.
Question: What are your thoughts on U.D.O’s Super Gemini? I’d love to see you have a go on one.
Hey Scott! Did you have a chance to try new Montage M with synth action? I'm wondering if the keybed as nice to play as weighted one on 88 key model.
@semyonboyk0 I already have a Montage M7 at home, I've put out several videos on it on my channel already!
Did I hear Medina on the ATC? If so this video is too ironic…I’m from Cleveland and just planned a trip for this Wednesday to go check out Sweetwater to check out synths😂 If you ever want company on your next trip LMK.
Us northeast Ohio synth fans really should stick together!
Yup, Medina is my home airport!
@@ScottsSynthStuffAnd we’re pretty much neighbors, western Stark County here, about 1/2 hour from the Medina airport on Medina Rd.
I don't like the Moog One either and I wish I did because the software and everything else looks perfect for the kind of stuff I want to do. But sound-wise... eh. It doesn't sound great. Sweet spots are far and few.
Its just buying a name . Good for the name snobs
If you don’t like the Moog One, I would guess none of you have played with it for any length of time. I’ve had one since its release and it’s one of my favorites. Have a listen to patches created by Bella Donna, Matt Johnson or GEO Synths and I’m sure you’ll change your outlook.
It's like going to Santa's workshop
THE WALDORF QUANTUM MK2 WOULD'VE BEEN AWESOME..
I think I would prefere the Hydrasynth for poly aftertouch too. Havn't tried the M8X tho, but the Hydrasynth is just such a noisy and a bit shlugish keybed
Moog Voyager GOLD Edition!?
- Cool. Synth shopping in style. But you forgot to bring one home 🤣
- I'm not sure how it works with parking your plane with the nose on the ground ? Is there like a hydrolic system with a button to make the front wheel go down/up ? I assume you make the nose go up again so that the plane is horizontal before you get in ? And why does it need the nose down when parked ? Couldn't you just leave it horizontal ?
Not true on the Osmose as you can adjust any & all sensitivities or off all together so it won't go out of tune unless you want it to and by how much. I have two of them on my Deckard's & Oberheim OB-X8m synths.
I really wish I could get out there some day, but I am not a flyer due to many bad experiences flying around the Northeast during my business career. A flight from Newark to Boston should not take over 5 hours including delays and landing and waiting in Hartford for weather to clear.
Wait you can't afford some synths but you have and fly a plane? I can buy any synth or all I want but I can not afford a plane and related expenses.
I didn't say I couldn't afford some synths. I just make considered decisions where and how much I wish to spend on synths. Could I afford a $10,000 Moog One? Sure. Would I spend $10,000 on a synthesizer? Not in a million years.
@@ScottsSynthStuff Me neither unless it did $20,000 worth of stuff then it would be a deal. I don't have the 3rd Wave but how would that compare to the Iridium that has 5 engines and can do 3 pairs layered in 2 voices at once? Also a wavetable kind of their MO. $5K is steep and the keys aren't that great looking. I might would buy a desktop version. The Iridium is only about $2K for the module if you look around. Obviously this has a million knobs driving up the cost. Iridium has an advanced touch screen though with finger manipulations and this just knobs and buttons. Would come down to sound but is it worth that price? Iridium is also MPE interactive. I noticed now there is a 3rd wave desktop but only $1,500 less and missing half the UI and obviously the keys. I'm not spending $3,500 when they removed half the interface. Not a good design idea. Only 41 knobs on the desktop verses 76 not including the buttons. No thank you.
ESQ1 !!!
I recently bought a few vintage synths and that was one of the ones I picked up but I didn't know much about it. It's absolutely become one of my favourites in the bunch I got.
@@TerraSin It's a brilliant analog/digital hybrid with a killer sequencer, I gigged mine to death in the 80's
Not true on the M8x PAT. It's adjustable in the settings. It can play PAT as responsive or not based on the assigned values and sensitivity. The very few PAT presets on the M8x aren't that good if that's all you tried it's nothing special until you edit it yourself.
I would go bankrupt several times over at Sweetwater
You didn’t buy anything?
You can't actually BUY anything at the Sweetwater showroom. You can try it out, but you still have to order it from their warehouse. You can arrange to pick up your purchase there, but you can't walk into the showroom and say "I want THIS" and then pick it up and take it home.
@@ScottsSynthStuff That’s weird. Tossing a new synth into the back of the plane and flying home would be awesome.
ha this is so American, fly to the music store, look at the worlds biggest collection of guitar pedals, flies home from the music store. The end.
Agree with some of the others that the Expressive and M8X are synth bullies in their own way. Both have changed the game and raised the bar. Your turn Korg and Roland -- mostly Korg. Nothing from them impresses me right now other than the Pa5X. Also great plane! Im from Dayton so Ive been an aviation nerd my whole life.
All we want to know is: How many Volcas can Scott fit in his plane? 😎
14:27 I don’t like it .
😂 $5k for that 3rd Wave is pure nonsense
