I have 8 wild raccoons that come visit me every night. I sit out on my porch, and they come out almost every night to see me, crawl on me, talk to me. and play. When 7 of them were babies, oh man were they a handful. I would lay in the grass, and they would run and jump on me. Pounce and play with each other like i was a jungle gym.. They are grown now and basically now just come sit by me and pull food out of my pockets. Not much playing.. I miss that.. But maybe next year when they have babies they will bring their kids to grandpas house.
This. They have too much energy to be pets. They are forgers... which takes a lot of time and energy. Hunting animals like cars and dogs would get very annoyed in the company of raccoons.
I’ve worked as a vet tech at an animal hospital that specializes in exotics for 4 years. We see raccoons from time to time out here in LA. I’ve never seen one that was a healthy weight, they’ve all been chonkers. Most of them were actually pretty curious and “sweet”. We had one stay with us for a while, it was cool giving him food and watching him eat with his little hands.
We have one. He's neutered & sweet as can be. We Have a decorated home so that's a problem but we can afford to fix what needs it. We love him very much. He loves us too.
I own a coatimundi (in the same family as raccoons- have a lot of differences though) and I agree with what you said here about their suitability as pets, which is also applicable for kinkajous. All members of the procyonidae family I’ve met have some serious temper issues, and can cause very serious injuries. Coatis especially have enormous tusk-like canine teeth. I’ve never been bitten myself so far, in the 5 or so years I’ve owned my coati, but I know people who own raccoons, kinkajous, and coatis that have been or have friends/family who have gotten bitten by their animals. Combined with the fact that they’re usually one person animals (like parrots), and don’t want to stop once they bite someone unlike an animal like a fox that will usually just bite once and try to run away, they definitely don’t make good pets (especially if they’re living inside your house) unless you REALLY know what you’re doing and can build a proper outdoor enclosure.
I "held" a coati once when I was volunteering at a zoo in my early teens--that animal was so strong that I really couldn't hold it much at all! Very cute and beautiful though.
Love racoons but they are much better wild animals than pets for the most part. I love that these animals were rescued and then get to teach folks about them and how to respect and care for the environment. My friend has some large scars on the back of her legs from her dad's racoons when she was little. He had the racoons for years and it had met my friend on previous visits but one time just decided she was running around to much for his taste and jumped on her leg to knock her down. My friend was ok and her dad kept the raccoon in a room when she would visit for the rest of the racoons time on earth. Being cute often makes it had for folks that remember they are wild animals and have the means to defend themselves to survive in the wild
Well let me ask you this if you have someone who owns them and is willing to mentor you do you think they can make somewhat decent pets otherwise just in terms of everything in general? I have always wanted to work with exotic and wild animals and I have several friends who do and many of them tell me because of the way the world is working nowadays it's probably best to get your own and work with them yourself so I'm looking to get at least one real exotic it's always been a lifelong dream
I have loved all of my pet coons and (o) possums lol! They were all found as babies and needed nursing with powdered kitten milk and then graduated to food lol, but they are all great and rewarding pets but they need lots of attention lol
I had one when I was a kid. A guy cut down a tree with a chain saw and there was a family of raccoon’s living in the tree . He didn’t no they were there. Well the mother was killed.i took one of the babies home and bottle fed it . It was fun to have till he got grown and Mother Nature called him and he left.

My parents put out fat scraps behind the shed where the racoons will get at it. Helps keep them fat in the winter when they need as much stuff as possible. I always see a bunch of them down by the river when I'm fishing.
They are adorable I love them but I believe they would only be the best pet if they needed rescue and they would require alot of attention, bonding time and you would definitely have to earn tremendous amounts of trust which is hard with a raccoon. In my mind they wouldn't be the best especially when you can't understand their changing moods. At the end of the day if you're experienced and the raccoon is in need of a rescue including a forever home that would be different💜
I got a raccoon and she comes to work with me and is awesome. I've had her since she was about 2 months old and if you get one thinking you got a cat/dog You're in trouble. She is bff with my cats and has never gone at anyone. If you are contemplating one know that it's not a normal pet. It's a wild animal regardless of anything. As long as you understand that and are prepared for what it is going to do then they are great. If not you'll have a really bad time
My uncle had a pair of pet raccoons that he raised from babies. Definitely not good pets. Very strong like little bears and they have a mind of their own. They escaped once, broke into the neighbor's house and tore the place up causing thousands of dollars in damage.
My mom found a raccoon that was abandoned or his mother was probably killed when she was young. She kept it for a short time thinking it would be a cute pet but like you said she shortly found out it was not a good idea as it shredded everything. She said what it didn't poop or pee on it shredded.
We live in northern Michigan. Lotta raccoons around our property. They are curious, sometimes friendly and fun to watch. However they have their forrest home and we have ours. I would not take one for a pet. Same with the mama bobcat and kits that come to visit.

I agree, Raccoons are just too high strung and strong headed to be pets. Honestly out of all North American small mammals; the Opossum is the most plausible to keep as a pet. They are gentle and good natured to humans and other pets, clean, not remarkably destructive, heck even ferrets and cats can tear stuff up more, easy to feed and just want a nice big garden to explore at most. Heck if they really bond to you if you get them very young; they can be if anything too emotionally needy, co-dependant. I had one as a pet rescue during my expat years after encountering a wild one and realising how chill they are

NO. Raccoons are NEVER pets. They are sweet as pie when small but, when they sexually mature they will tear your ass up just like they try with their real mothers. It's quite natural behavior. I rehab wild animals legally. I specialize in Raccoons. I've lived with at least fifty of them. They take a ton of work when small. They need a warm bottle feed every two hours or so all through the night. It's cruel to leave them alone, they do well with constant one on one. Ive taken newborns who's eyes weren't open and I'd wrap them in a washcloth and stick them in my bra. Laugh if you must, it's the only way I could get a little sleep. Yep, I raised Raccoons in my boobies.They are very vocal and loud and cry for 'mama' (you) at all hours. As they get older they become adorable funny little bandits, but, they will tear your house up. They will tear your porch up. They will destroy all your yard decore because they are nosy and rough.They have thumbs, they can open your fridge, turn on faucetts etc. You must teach them to hunt, forage, fish just like mom. They get bored easily and will keep you busy building toys and challenges for them. They house train themselves and will go out to potty at about 3 months or so. You go out with them. You teach them to climb trees (some of them are actually terrified of of trees) and you sit and wait for hours as they play in said tree. They should never be caged except for sleeping and for their own protection. To cage an animal this close to being a human and this curious and smart is nothing but, cruel. This lady has a nice enclosure and her Coons are old enough to be in that. Still they are a lot of work. Please, please believe me, you don't want one.They also break your heart when they return to the wild in the Fall...because they are NOT pets. But, you can bet, you'll have a new one or a new litter the next spring because fools thought they were pets. Until they weren't. Sorry for the long rant, but, protecting them and educating people about them is my purpose in life. It really is. I am a 70 year old granny, but, I would still do anything for them and for most critters. Animals are so much nicer friends than most people.
They make good pets but its sad seeing animals in any type of cage, its soft torture! Wild animals deserve to be free, how would u like living in a cage? People suck!

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Maybe it’s happened once with some very lucky coon but a 100lb dog isn’t getting taken down by a wild raccoon usually.
