Great combination of history, personal experience, and demos. I have to say, every time you pressed the play or record buttons I cringed with fear your tape would be eaten or the door jams. I too never saw this machine in the wild.

Thank you so much. Making this video was on my to do list for a while. I got super lucky and found a working one out of three tries. The so-called "good" one is the one that actually ate my tape at the end. 😄
And the heads clogged again in a short time. They are not very robust machines after 40 years especially with equally old tapes.
      Thanks for watching.

    I love those old camcorders. I guess it isn't a porta-pack solutions. :) More like a cradle.

I'm fascinated with the KODAVISION and the POLAROID POLAVISION cameras. GREAT JOB! - J.D. Watkins

Great video! @ 26:23 I bought myself that Kodavision MVS camcorder in April of '87 on sale for $1,200 and later added the cradel. The camera was on sale because, when the Charged Coupled Device (CCD) was introduced, these cameras, with their power guzzeling pick-up tube, went obsolete.
Over the next 15 years or so, I filmed hundreds of cassettes until my Kodak finally gave out. I like the softer picture this camera produced, and the sound quality was remarkable. I'm glad I kept the original master 8mm tapes instead of copying onto VHS and reusing them. I've found the picture/sound quality on the 8mm tapes have held up far better than my old VHS tapes and my old Beta for that matter.
Here's a trip to Niagara Falls I shot with my Kodak camcorder in 1987 where the opening shot is another Kodavision camcorder... czcams.com/video/_-3oSLz5hXA/video.htmlsi=hasi4DyzE9DsVndT

Thank you so much for sharing. I was born and raised in Rochester and went to school in Buffalo. I have been to Niagara Falls more times than I can remember. Never once with a Kodavision though. :)
In 1987 I was still using that RCA Selectavision portable VCR and a separate camera connected with a cable that I showed. Not too long afterward I got a Full-sized VHS Camcorder but never owned a Video 8 back in the day, I went straight to Hi-8.
I should have mentioned the picture tube. It's kind a funny it takes a minute to warm up. Since my batteries are long dead I don't have a clue how long they lasted back in the day.
Those are precious memories of yours. I hope you have digitized those 8mm before it's too late. My 8mm cameras all seems to be failing at an alarming rate.
      Thanks for watching.
