65 years old... and back in the '70s we literally took these geniuses for granted. I believe their popularity was held back because they didn't tour... they were the mysthical "studio band". I thought duplicating this musical production wizardry would be impossible live... I was wrong... saw Steely Dan at the Garden State Arts Center in the late 1990's... and yep... they captured this same quality live... WOW. JUSt WOW! THEY ARE THE TRUTH. Shower music CHAMPIONS!

Same!!! I’m a few years younger than you, and sorta came of age w Steely Dan in the early 80s (college boyfriend introduced me to their music). I too thought surely, they can’t do that sound live. But was lucky enough to catch them here in New Orleans at the Jazz & Heritage Festival - maybe 3 or 4 years ago ??? Anyway, they played the entire Aja album and I was blown away: sounded exactly like the record. They’re incredible!

The above link is to the isolated vocal tracks (lead and background) for "Peg." Please note that there's about 20 seconds of silence at the beginning of the video to account for the well-known instrumental intro to the song and then the vocals kick in. Listening to the vocal tracks, especially the background harmonies, really emphasizes (to me as someone with extremely limited knowledge of musical performance) how sophisticated the song is...without any of the instruments!

Sorry for any confusion) Seriously, "Reelin' in the Years" should be a strong contender for next Steely Dan reaction if more mainstream songs like "Peg" make the cut. The guitar solos in "Reelin' in the Years" and "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney are epically underrated.

The above link is an excerpt of a music documentary series called "Classic Albums." There was an entire episode on "Aja." The clip above is Michael McDonald talking about the minute intricacies that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker wanted in McDonald's background vocals for "Peg." Then, there is a short section in the clip with Fagen and Becker at the control board, showing how the chorus was mixed, including the background vocals. On a side note, McDonald starting working with Steely Dan a few years before "Aja." He's been quoted in at least one interview that he believed he was hired because Donald Fagen thought McDonald "could sing high parts like a girl." Incredible stuff. 😀

Sorry if there was any confusion with my earlier comment. I was referring to Michael McDonald's place in "Yacht Rock," which he has graciously embraced when asked about it in past interviews. Another poster mentioned Steely Dan as being a "jazz fusion" band and, whether this is fitting or not, Steely Dan offers so many musical varieties (especially in a song like "Peg"), it would be very hard to accurately describe them as "Yacht Rock." Sorry about any confusion with the earlier post.

I don't know if you already know about it, but I came across a concert from 2012 called The Dukes of September. It is headlined by Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. I listened to it for the first time the other day and it is a masterpiece. You definitely should check it out.

How about the 3 part super tight vocal harmony of Michael McDonald in the back ground that Michael had to lay each track down separately throughout this song.

Great reaction! You're absolutely right. But for those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s, this was listening to the radio on a Tuesday. We heard great stuff like this ALL THE TIME and this was just another catchy tune on FM pop radio. It's fun for me to go back and listen to this with "fresh ears" as if I'm hearing it for the first time. And among many great elements, the thing that I think stands out to me is the bass work, especially during the chorus. It's absolutely off the chain. Like the members of this band were all freaking musical geniuses. Beautiful song and great production, all the way around.

As a teen when this came out I lived for album liner notes - I would read every detail of every album learning all the players. Imagine, in their prime, Kobe, Michael, Shaq, Bird and Lebron on the same team - that's who played on all the Steely Dan records - the best A list studio musicians on the planet including Michael Omartian, Larry Carlton, Chuck Rainey, Dean Parks etc etc etc

It's as though the planets were in perfect alighment for the album "Aja" . This album comes, in my opinion, as close to "musical perfection" as you can get. The groove, the singing, the musicianship, the mixing, the engineering and the production value are all TOP SHELF. Great reaction as always. Take care....

As far as i know, Steely Dan was Donald Fagen and Walter Becker who hired masterful studio musicians like Michael McDonald and the virtuoso, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. I believe that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker played in college with Chevy Chase on drums.

That is exactly how they played and sounded at the Palace Theater in 2014 in Columbus Ohio. Donald Fagan is a perfectionist on stage as is all of them. Back up singers are great. The band as he said when he came on stage is the best he ever had. Them and Leonid & Friends are the best I have seen live. I have seen 50 or 60 live performances from Rush to Manhattan Transfer to Conway Twitty and everything between. They blew the walls out of the Palace Theater. Leonid & Friends blew the walls out of the Southern Theater. Check them out live on here!!! You won't be disappointed. You will be amazed 😁
