@@jonathancaro3427 He knew the end was near, that and the montage of yesteryear and the state his Tennessee home was in, was the tearjerker. Both he and June's health were failing, he didn't know when exactly the end was, just knew that it was near and took a look at his life and current state and knew just how to express his being at the time into his greatest artistry, music. One of Johnny's major talents aside from writing his own songs, was turning other people's tunes into classics for himself. He knew he was recording his epitaph, and the inclusion of "Hurt" into it, was pure Cash genius.

      One of my old comments...
What we do in this world doesn't amount to a fart in a bucket... even if your name was Genghis Khan or Jeff Bezos, and you lived for a thousand years. The nearest intelligent civilization out there will likely NEVER KNOW that the EARTH ITSELF even EXISTED, much less what any individual did while on it. Virtually EVERYTHING that ever will transpire in this Universe will happen either BEFORE or AFTER our time here. So don't sweat it; milk it for all it's worth, revel even in the struggles. Because this is likely the most fleeting part of our existence. There is more to come...
The answers can be found here (not in the music or even the images... look BEYOND all that):

We sometimes forget that the elderly know what life is. They've been there. They've done it. We sometimes think we invented the world, we think we are smarter, we think we are better, but the reality is, we know shit compared to them. We are nothing compared to them. They are the ones that have fought battles so we can live as freely as we do today. They have had an entire lifetime of hurt, of pain, of everything. This is why we should respect our elders. Always.

I'm 57. The first singer I ever remember hearing was Johnny Cash. He lived hard, loved hard, and fought hard. He did music, drugs, and women. He started out at the same time as Elvis and traveled the country with him and other legends in a car at the beginning of their careers. He watched his brother die from falling into a saw as a child and then lived in his brother's shadow the rest of his childhood. To say the man battled demons is an understatement. he lived a thousand lives in a few decades but never found peace of mind in any of them. I hope he has now.

Hard to believe that a song written by a generation X rocker would connect so powerfully with a country artist 30 years older. To me it connects generations. For Johnny and his contemporaries, drugs were used and life was lived hard, but you kept it to yourself and your family. The challenges suffered by our grandparents are still felt today. This song emphasizes for me how much we should be leaning on each other...Those "old fuckers" can teach us all.

He had an early life of extreme poverty, and when he found success as a musician he developed a killer drug and alchohol habit. Years later he married his wife June and she hauled him back from self destruction. She wasn't supposed to be in the video but she came downstairs to check on Johnny and the director asked her to stay. They were married for 35 years until she died, four months after the video was recorded, and with his guardian angel gone, Johnny Cash died three months later.
Trent Reznor, who wrote the song about his drug addiction, heard Cash's version and said, "it's not my song anymore, it's his".

One thing many gloss over, and maybe it just hits me hard, are the lines “my empire of dirt” and “you are someone else, I am still right here” meaning as we age we tend to forget those around us and basically lose ourselves. I think that scares everyone, because to live your whole life and build up everything through work and relationships...only to watch it crumble away toward the end through memory loss of some sort (not saying this happened to Cash directly, but it is still impactful).
Overall, it’s not about $$, fame, or any possessions...it’s about who we impacted and loved. So so deep.

Mr. Johnny Cash did this remake in his later years. Mr. Cash also suffered from life long addiction fueled by fame and fortune.

Until you literally have nothing but your empire of dirt. Johnny understood this song, and that's why he sung it. The Man In Black crossed boundaries when it was not fashionable to do so. On his TV program, he had the Who. he did Blue Yodel #9 with Louis Armstrong, "i'm busted" with Ray Charles. When he hugged Charlie Pride he got death threats from the KKK, written in blood. He stood up for the "Indians" (indigenous people), especially Ira Hayes. Cash is in the R&R Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame. Young people adore him when they "discover" him; no BS from this man, no hypocrisy. He was the Truth. Went to hell and back twice. In the sixties amphetamines and barbituates reduced him to a shell (Doctor prescribed!). 70s he was clean. In the 80s his doc put him on Oxycontin, whoop there it is, another addiction. His family did an intervention, he fought back again. When June Carter Cash died, it broke his heart, literally. Do I love this man? Passionately proud that I do. During this Covid crisis, when i am mad at Americans, i stop it, cus of him. So Iam Tae, I love you all the way from Toronto, cus you got it!!

In the end, he met his wife, who wanted nothing to do with him, and eventually won her over. She helped him battle with his demons, raise a family, and gave him peace in the end. They died not to long apart from each other. To me this is true love, one can not live without the other for long. He has both Blues and Gospel but was also part of the beginning of rock with what would later be known as Rock a Billy or Southern Rock.

It is amazing how Cash changed the original meaning of the song. As an older adult, there are plenty of thoughts about your life, your sins, your missed opportunities and the very real human feeling that you didn't do your best and you let someone down. Yet, in the end, you are who you are. The irony for me is I never got to hear Cash sing live and actually just missed him at the Grand Ole Opry the one time I was there. It was something that always bugged me because he was a favorite of my father's. In the late 1990's, I was in Jamaica eating dinner up on the hill near Rose Hall with a friend when I noticed a man tending to some bushes on his property. I quickly realized it was Johnny Cash so I left the table and went over to introduce myself. I told him about the missed opportunity to hear him live, my regret and we had a quick chat about that and a few other topics. He came across as a very genuine person. When Hurt came out a few years later, it really hit me.

As an older man you realize that all of the things you thought we valuable were just your "empire of dirt". Others can just have all of that. You realize that the things you want to keep are none of that. All of your friends, your loved ones, they start dropping away "goes away in the end". You also start seeing how you hurt them over time and those are the regrets. You can't have that back.
Funny how great art impacts you where you are, even beyond where the artist was when creating it. Cash shows a great piece of art looked at from a different angle.

Mr. Cash died very soon after doing this, his daughter said when she heard him recording it, it sounded like he was saying goodbye. His wife, June Carter, had passed not long before he did this song. Just thought you would like some of the history behind the song & Mr. Cash.

To me this was his apology to her and the kids for what they had to endure because of the hard life he led for so long. at the end of the song the lyric says if I could do it all over again I would but I'd do it differently. (a million miles away) the visuals show Jesus' crucifixion as a symbol of how Johnny did eventually clean up and get right with God says to me that if he did it all over again that his "coming to Jesus" moment would have been much earlier.

I'm glad young people are discovering Johnny. Some people think he's like many of the county singers today, who are big on MAGA. NOT. He was a champion for all people. He sang for prisons. He sang for Natives. He was honored by Jewish groups. Cash wore black because it represented the poor and disenfranchised. The KKK hated him, libeled him, and plotted to kill him. Johnny never backed down sued the KKK for $25 million. He said, “The Klan is despicable, filthy, dirty, and unkind.”
He was the real deal. And so was his pain. He was an alcoholic and hurt himself and his family. He also was a man who struggled with his actions conflicting with his faith. But he was honest, deep and capable of introspection as is evident by the video. And his children carry his legacy. They publicly denounced the Charlottesville White supremacy rally when they saw a photo of a man in attendance wearing a Johnny Cash T-shirt. It can be found here.

If it almost got you, then knowing the story behind it will crush you.
This is from an album of cover songs he did. "Hurt" was originally done by Nine Inch Nails.
That is his wife, June Carter Cash. They were together for decades, including during his struggles with addiction. She died just days after the video was shot. He didn't live much longer without her.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has said that even though he wrote the song and first performed it, it no longer belongs to him. It belongs to Cash now.
And if you really want to go for emotional devastation, listen to "September When It Comes" by his daughter Roseanne Cash. He sings in it with her and it was recorded not long before his death, like within days of it. You can hear the age and fatigue in his voice during his verses. You can tell he's saying goodbye to his daughter.
    I'm gonna go cry now.

Johnny was a true man of sorrow and redemption. He watched his brother die after being almost cut in half by a industrial saw. He grew up as a sharecropper with his parents and joined the military during Korea just to get away from home and an alcoholic and emotionally abusive father. Drugs, sex, and violence surrounded him and he destroyed his first marriage because of it. His second wife, June Carter, truly saved his life and his soul. This song was done after he had been rejected by the music industry. Even though he was already a legend in country music, it took Rick Rubin believing that Johnny still had something to say. This is actually a Nine Inch Nails song, and neither Johnny nor Trent Reznor thought it would work, but Rick knew it would because Johnny had that darkness inside him. The story goes (don't know if it's true or not) that after Trent heard Johnny's version, he said that he knew then that it was no longer his song. It would forever be Johnny's song. You can see June in the video, but 6 months after this songs release she was dead and Johnny died 4 months after she did. Many believe (I among them) that Johnny died of a broken heart. After everything they went through together, he just couldn't go on without his rock. What makes the video so emotional is the old videos from happier days compared to the hardship of growing up and growing old.

I love Johnny Cash's music so much, and this particular song is a heart-breaking favorite. The building featured in the video ("House of Cash" museum) burned down after an accidental fire a few years after Mr. Cash passed away. I was lucky enough to hear Johnny Cash in concert as a teen. I grew up in Bakersfield, CA, & he, June and one or two of his daughters performed with him at the Civic Auditorium around 1974. It was wonderful. Afterwards, he asked if anyone wanted to come up and shake his hand. I think I was about 14 years old, and my parents said, "go!" I only remember a few specific handshakes in my life, but I remember that one well. His hand was big, worn & calloused. He seemed like a kind man. I think when June died, he just gave up. They adored each other.
