Dan, I think you would like one sticking better. If you make your system more compact and weigh less you will pack it with you more often. You seem comfortable up there. Check out EWO. Eastern woods outdoors. They make the best one stick in my opinion.
I'm a tree climber by trade, bring an extra layer (Palisade Puffy ? ) as its easy to get cold quickly when the sun sets and you can't move much to help blood flow. Besides elk hunting lets give thanks the kids are going back to school. Summer has been rough!
@@ElkShape I have done several hours with more comfort than I ever had with my climbing stand. I use a platform as a base so I can stand on occasion to change up things. Mostly just using the saddle though. Don't think I can ever go back to a regular stand anymore. The portability is great with a set of climbing sticks.
@@BeardedBeastMan I go with knee pads. No wear & tear on the pants that way. Stay away from the cushion or knushion. Its comfortable, but one more thing too carry and strap around the tree. Wear in the knee pads & you're good.
Jake has the “safety” rope mixed up. The lineman loops around for when your climbing up then the thether goes on at the top that hooks to your bridge that you hang on then you take the lineman rope off.
Coming from the Midwest, I love this tactic. I was debating whether to bring the saddle out west… not anymore. Tim - if you want to reduce pin float, try dropping a knee into the tree. It’s another point of contact for stability.
This will be my 2nd whitetail season here back east in a Tethrd saddle. Super comfortable, light weight & mobile. Went from the ground to the trees with my bow the past couple weekends in preparation for the season. Can't wait! Hope you guys are successful this season.
Congratulations and welcome to the saddle game. Jake that a lineman’s rope not a stay rope it goes around the tree and connects to the smaller loops that your bride don’t connect to. I would also advise practice your off side/weak side shots. Because 9 out of 10 times that’s where the animals will be and it’s hard to get drawn back in awkward positions and practice your transitions because saddles can be easy to move in so you move faster if you don’t make your self slow down. Just a few mistakes I have made and lessons I have learned the hard way. Good luck this season
I got into saddle hunting for just this reason. Dan, your last 2 minutes explaining swirling winds is straight fire and the exact reason why they are such an effective tool. I have moved to the one stick method (as opposed to carrying 4 sticks in my pack), using an aider on my one stick, and rappelling down the tree when finished. Therefore it cuts back on weight that I have to carry in my pack when in the mountains, because every pound, even ounce, counts when you're hiking mountains. Where I have hunted elk in Idaho for the past 6 years, I have found multiple wallows where this is an incredibly effective tool early season when the bugling stops by 10 am. If any midwestern deer hunter (hunting farmland) like myself is wanting to try this, get your setup ready for whitetail archery season this fall and get experience with it and learn what setup works best for you. This gear is buy once, cry once, but it is the ultimate tool to maximize every hour in the elk woods. Because like Dan has said multiple times in his podcasts, you need some TIME IN THE RED ZONE (actually hunting) with this equipment. Work out all the kinks, get comfortable with the setup as best as you can to prepare you for when that bull sneaks into your wallow. My setup: -Tethrd Saddle - Novix Mini Double Stick -Madrock Safeguard -Pursuit Platform (made of thermoplastic, not steel) You can youtube tons of videos on all this gear, but this setup works great for me. All this is less than 5 lbs in my elk pack Dan, keep up the good work brother.
welcome to the saddle revolution! decided to try saddle hunting this year as well! One thing that I noticed was I also needed to practice weak side shots. I read / watched videos and it seems that everyone throws their release shoulder under the tether rope and puts their backs to the tree. i didnt realize it was a hole different ball game shooting like that till I did and sent an arrow under my foam deer lol. PS whoever chooses the music for the intro is on fire!
Last year was my first year saddle hunting and archery hunting...For this year I am going to try the 1 sticking/rappelling method and see how I like that.
As a rifle whitetail hunter who's getting into archery, seeing you guys picking up saddle over a fixed stand has really set it in that I need to go that route as well. I'm looking forward to those saddle elk videos if they may appear! Keep Hammering boys 💪🏼
been mentioning the saddle out west for years on other channels, glad to see you guys are taking it out! I'm too broke but a canadian company's getting into the game. having worked with arborists I would take a good light set of spikes vs multiple sticks ( you guys have regs on trees and stuff I heard) or I would take 2 poles and run a 3 or 4 step rope daisy chain. cuts some weight!
The lineman rope goes around the tree when you climb up. The safety rope is for tethering to the tree. You guys were using your lineman rope incorrectly.
Watching old stuff. It used to be great having Tim lighten things up, balance out Dans super serious attitude. Sometimes you gotta loosen up and chase a dog for a sec, or podcast in a pool. Relax Dan it's not going to ruin your elk season
Now that I've been hunting from a saddle for 2 years I can honestly say, it's an incredible tool for both the patient hunter (several 8 hour sits) and the aggressive hunter.
Great Video as always; I have never used a saddle to hunt but have looked at it in the past. After seeing you guys use it, I may have to pull the trigger. I hunt SW Washington and its nothing but trees, but may give me a better chance to fill a tag.
I love that you and some of the other larger CZcams hunting channels are adopting each others "traditional" methods of hunting. By tinkering with your approach and methods, I am sure you will learn a crapload more about how to target different animals in different conditions. Keep the videos coming guys #ABT
I love the tactic I am glad you boys are going to use this I have been thinking of doing the same thing I can’t wait to see the the elk a mania this season
If you want to be more on one side of the platform you should try rotating tether where it bites into the tree more towards your right, and move it up a touch about head height. 😉 good luck and welcome to the saddle world. I love mine. 👊🏽 🏹
We found where I hunt up north of Spokane, that the bulls are already rutting on the 1st and 2nd week of Sept. And breeding cows with hardly any bugling, based off the embryo study done... and already bulls are already gathering cows and bugling still in velvet and others are dark horned and white tips...
Will you guys please test and see if arrows with factory fletch will drop more or less than identical arrows with true helical? I really am kicking the idea of switching around and haven’t been able to find any videos on it anywhere
I never hunted out of a tree until last year and decided to try saddle hunting. Love it so far. I was able to shoot one whitetail at 25 yards from my saddle. Yeah, Jake is a little confused. That's not how you use a lineman rope to climb. When at height you really want your tether about forehead height or so, not around waist height like I saw at one point in your video. Practice shooting all angles. Learn to pivot around to your weak side to shoot instead of going over your bridge. Don't lean out away from the tree quite so much, as it will show more of your movement. And Knee Pads for sitting!
Mind on guys to practice shooting straight below yourself in the tree, just in case one of them awesome animals comes in walking right below you. Best to have all angles covered 👍👍
I’m getting strong rooftop tent vibes with this one!!🤣 But two is one, and one is none! I have my fingers crossed for the air attack. Straight shooting boys ✌️

I also call out of thee Treestand. This secret is once you know an elk is coming you half to shut up. They all ready know where you're at.
